Isiah Thomas Also Disagrees With Scottie Pippen

Zeke didn’t smack Pip down the way that Kareem did, but framed his argument around the salient point that it’s still a bit too early to compare LeBron’s career to Jordan’s. From ESPN: “[Isiah] Thomas, whose Piston teams beat Jordan’s Bulls three straight times before finally losing in 1991 as Jordan later claimed his first title, didn’t have as firm a stance as Abdul-Jabaar, but wouldn’t agree with Pippen’s comments either. ‘I think LeBron has a chance to eclipse Jordan if he continues to improve his game, but where they are right now, you still have to take Jordan as being the better player,’ Thomas said Tuesday night. ‘Now, six years from now, if LeBron continues to add different facets to his game, then maybe you can have that argument and you can have that debate. Right now, Jordan was such a complete player on both ends, he was a great foul shooter, he turned into a 3-point shooter, he had midrange game, he had low-post game, he was a lock-down defender and LeBron is getting to that in all those areas. Now, he hasn’t gotten there yet and we don’t know if he will get there. But if he does get there, he will probably only be equal to, I don’t know if he can ever be better.’”

I rarely agree with Isiah. Today is one of the few times I do. No active player is close to Michael. Let’s just leave it at that and let these guys play out their careers.

Somehow I was expecting far more irrational and crazy things when I saw Isiah’s name on this headline…I was pleasently suprised by the clarity and correctness of his statement.

  • Gman

Now thats from a guy who kinda still despises MJ.

  • http://hotmail.com The WZA

MJ was and is the best player to ever play basketball…hands down. Not that I really need to mention this, but if you compare all of the acheivements MJ won in his first 8 years in the league to Lebrons, MJ wins hands down. If you have Jordans arch rival say he is the best to ever play, then you know he is the best. I’m sure Lebron will tell you the same. I love Pippen. He was one of my favorite players, but stop hatin!

Isiahs word carries less weight than Kareems. Isiah talking like he relevant. Shut the f√¢k up Isiah!

Larry Bird is the greatest player of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://sohh.com teamplayer65

Kobe stans would beg to differ on the ” no current players remark”. They are pathetically wrong.

Isiah was one of the greatest players but the media keeps his name down so the fickle fans keep his name out of their debates. Definitely top 25 player EVER!! People forget. LEBRON HASNT EVEN PASSED KOBE. Kobe has been the best since Jordan. He has survived all the eras! The AI and VINCE and McGradys all came and went but he is still here. They tried and give it to Lebron but Kobe was still there until this playoffs. TO be honest Lebron had to buddy hustle his way this year to get a ring.

It depends on what your definition of a “good basketball player” is, if you think it’s someone who can score at will but won’t make his teamates better than it’s Jordan. If you define it as someone who can control the game, score, and make his teamates better than the greatest ever is a 3 way tie between Magic, Bird and Russell. Had to judge Russell because the game was so different when he played. F-ck Wilt, read Bill Simmon’s book, that guy was a massive tool haha.

He didnt earn it. Its always easier to shine when you put yourself on a great team where you can suck most of the game b.c you have guys who will carry you until you decide to come through.

If only he coached and GM’d with this kind of wisdom!

  • Coney Islander

@ZP -Larry Bird is the greatest player of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- That gave me a genuine chuckle. Larry Legend was the greatest WHITE player of all time, that I can agree with, cut it out. lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

Chris Bosh is the best DINOSAUR player of all time!

  • MikeC.

Why couldn’t Isiah have had a moment of clarity like this when he was getting ready to sign Eddy Curry? Things could have been so different.

  • robb

“Stop comparing anyone to Jordan”.- Phil Jackson. Even if Lebron’s game improves, MJ’s will can’t be compared. Against Kobe, against Lebron, against anybody, MJ would win because of his heart. End of discussion.

    I want a t-shirt that says “Zeke don’t drink the Kool-Aid”

  • NJ4Life

The ONLY reason Zeke gave Lebron a CHANCE is because he thinks he’s bringing LBJ to the Knicks when his next contract is up.

  • Da Holy Karron/Nbaforum

This has been one of da best playoffs in yrs u got 3 top 50 players and a role player putting they 2 cents in this debate. I love it. What will Mj say that’s what I’m waiting on or hell his sons hahaha.

  • hagekg

i can smell KOBETARDS in BAWSE……..

  • crooklyn sazer

Isiah was the bomb and his opinion does still matter, dude won on every level available to win at h.s. colleg, pro, not his fault his first olympic try was messed up by politics, (and they still had a great run beating pro teams as an alternate), 2nd chance (dream team) was messed up cuz magic was too sensitive, now whether zeke was right or not it was funny seeing arsenio front and center and backstage at all the laker games back then,,, i’m just saying and hey there aint nothing wrong with it, if that how he got down. zeke also had the balls to dump dantley for aguirre and get chips as a result, he beat larry , mike, and magic, and clyde, heck he almost beat the lakers on one good wheel. So yeah his professional opinion is of relevance.

  • toinefan88

    @Max that would be KG

hagekg – or Kobesexuals in heat….

  • hoodsnake

Isn’t Tim Duncan the best after the Jordan era? Kobe blowers be crazy again sigh

  • indeed

you cant be better than jordan. or a magic. or a bird. or a jabbar. you cant. it doesnt matter how many james wins. jordan was the main player on 6 title teams and no losses. james has already lost a finals. jordan was a scoring champ and won titles. who else has done that? even bryant was the main player for only 2 titles. people like to throw around this or that player is better than jordan. its a shame.

  • http://sohh.com teamplayer65

Jordan had been knocked out of the playoffs and swept numerous times before he even made the finals. Everyone loses before they win so that point is irrelevent. It’s not like Jordan won every year of his career.

  • treetrunks

can’t people read/listen?! Pippen said Lebron COULD end up as the greatest ever…for f*ck’s sake…

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

Jordan never got SWEPT tho..but it’s weird to see zeke say something so not crazy lol

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Jordan got swept by the Celtics when he dropped 63 in a game. In fact he got swept by that Celtics team in back to back years.

  • dasniper14

pistol pete could beat larry bird any day!

  • larrylegend

    @ Allenp
that i bring up everytime, when sb. says, lb ain’t the greatest :-)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

^Now that is just homerism, but I did want to set the record straight.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Jordan’s been swept more times than LeBron James.

  • http://fkjslf.com Jukai

RJ: Careful of that book. One dude used that book as his sole way of debating me that Russell was better than Chamberlain and I obliterated him in the debate, haha. It’s 100% right on everything but anything related to the Celtics.

  • Pugz

So did Magic, he just did on twitter.

  • yeayeah

“TO be honest Lebron had to buddy hustle his way this year to get a ring. “-BAWSE BOVS

    i like that haha

  • Youngindy21

Who cares what Isiah Thomas thinks. Just because 1 former NBA star got on TV and voiced his opinion on the matter doesn’t mean every former NBA player has to add their 2 cents to the matter.

I don’t agree with mr Thomas only because Bron is a forward and M.J. was a guard. Bron is doing thangs Mike couldn’t. Bron has already had more chasedown blocks than MJ had in his whole career. Bron could probably post Pip up & shoot over him, MJ couldnt. Can’t compare em yet though il agree to that give another 5 years. MJ was ill but bron is SIC. It’s like comparing Wilt to MJ really.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

INTERPRETATION: Isiah doesn’t think Lebron is good enough for him and Magic Johnson to “freeze out” at the NBA All-Star game http://clicky.me/5V7i

  • http://www.dbcmusiconline.com Sam Small

The funny Thing is you really can not compare any of these players as times are different. Would LeBron be as good as he is in a league where centers were actually centers? Could he have flourished with Wilt, Russell, Lanier, Kareem, Moses in the middle? Could he have withstood the defensive magnitude of 80′s bball with the Bad Boys, Xavier McDaniel, Charles Oakley? How would he do with Dennis Rodman in his face? Could he play the game with Skill and intelligence like Magic and Bird? What about some of the best shooters in the game like Bernard, Dantley, Alex English, Reggie, even the coaches are different. LeBron will be the best of THIS Generation, but can LeBron Take a Team, a town on his back and take them to Championshps? Can he do it with an off night shooting by invovling his team?

You guys can say what you want about Isiah, but as Crooklyn Sazer wrote, He almost beat LA on One Leg. Would todays Players even attempt to do that? its a different day and age. These things are sued to stir up such conversations that we are having now. Most importantly and I leave on this note…You had Russell vs Wilt, Magic Vs Bird, Erving vs Bird, Akeem and Ewing, Other than Kobe, its LeBron vs. Who? Who Brings out the Beast in LeBron.

    Sorry for the typos

  • http://www.dbcmusiconline.com Sam Small

And to Coney Islander…I have to disagree with you. As an african American, I must say, Yes Larry Bird is one of the Greatest Players ever. He was what he was, but I loved to hate him, because in order for my Pistons to get where they got to, they had to go past Larry Legend. Larry could Shoot, Larry could pass, Larry could rebound, but he was in intelligent player, he had a sharp bball iq that players today don’t come with. You knew with the last two minutes, who was getting the ball, you just didn’t know what he was going to do with it. Plus he made his team play better. He was a gamer.
