Jason Kidd Has His Ring, at Long Last

Seventeen years after stepping onto an NBA hardwood, the great Jason Kidd is finally a champion. In the process, Kidd vindicated himself, his squad, and the man who signs the checks in Dallas. Yahoo! Sports takes a look: “It’s not real right now,’ he’d later say, and who could blame him. This second act, this renaissance, wasn’t supposed to happen. Not at age 38, not when so many of his peers had long ago left the game. The NBA had been turned over to Chris Paul and Deron Williams, Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook, those of the younger legs and fleet feet. He’d had his two cracks at a championship, and missed. Through it all, Kidd never stopped grinding, and this is part of his brilliance. Eyes wide, shoulders squared, he’s forever rushing the ball up the court, searching for the next opportunity. This season, he found it amongst a motley collection of Dallas Mavericks. He looked around the locker room at all these veterans, not a single title among them, and proclaimed something that would continue to resonate in the months ahead. ‘This team could be special.’ These Mavericks grew into a championship team because Kidd helped Dirk Nowitzki make them so. Three seasons earlier, Mavs owner Mark Cuban had gambled a talented young point guard, Devin Harris, and two first-round draft picks to pull Kidd from the rubble of the New Jersey Nets. Cuban knew that Kidd could serve as a guide for Nowitzki, help him lead in ways he never had. Even at Kidd’s age, he could still manage a game as well as anyone in the league. ‘Do you think we won that trade yet?’ Cuban barked early Monday morning. He’s long been sensitive to the criticism he absorbed for giving up so much for his aging point guard.”

Congrats J. It was a joy to see you do it in your prime in Jersey. Everyone knows how hard you every night worked for this.

  • Zabba

Well deserved. I mean 17 years for this. Man, I was in junior high when this guy came into the league. I remember my friend telling me how bad ass he was.

  • http://slamonline.com Easy Bee

I was 3 when that guy came into the league and now I see him playing 40 min. a night in the NBA Finals? That’s crazy…

  • ErnieD

    Derek Coleman still doesn’t give a sh*t.

This isn’t even Kidd’s 2nd act – it’s his third. The second was turning New Jersey into a contender back a DECADE ago. Congrats to Kidd.

    I shed a tear for Jason Kidd…

  • Remember Me

Yay Area stand up! J Kidd was born in Fisco, schooled in Oakland, and went to college at Berkeley. Need I say more? Unquestionably, one of the greatest of all-time. The Bay is very proud indeed.

Am I the only one that thinks Kidd can play another solid 3 years in the league? Of course he’s not as fast and quick as he was back in the day, but he still rebounds and passes effectively. And he knocks down wide open threes and plays solid defense, thats pretty much all the Mavs need out of him.

  • JD

its great to see guys who’ve worked so hard all their career for a ring finally get what they deserve, dirk, jkidd, shawn marion, peja stojakovic,Jason Terry, and to a certain extent caron butler too.

  • Overtime

J-Kidd…what can you say? Everything once considered a weakness, the J, the D…he made more threes than ANYONE in the playoffs, his D locked up the stars, absolutely amazing he can still change at this stage and does it well. No1, and I mean no1, deserved a ring more.

  • Sergio

Jason Kidd guarded Kobe and Lebron in these playoffs. At 38. Arguably two of the top ten offensive players in the history of the league. And both of them had sub-par performances. Amazing.

The Bay is proud of you J Kidd.

  • Riggs

can he have the J back in his first name now?

Gongrats to Kidd. Thanks for all the fast-breaks and alley-oops in NJ. Glad you finally conquered, even happier that it was over such an overrated team like the Miami Heat who were thoroughly outplayed. You guys saved the NBA from complete narcissism and I commend you for that. I think coach Carlisle gave you the ultimate praise in his postgame monologue. Bravo

    Good list Tariq.

  • HAMMER

Well deserved. Standing O 4 him and Dirk

  • Trout

I think of all the players who let their egos and press releases should recognise this is the way you conduct bsiness. Well deserved title for the focus these guys put in throughout the playoffs these guys were championship first, second and third. No amount of hype or incident detracted from that not to they didn’t mix it up a little but they really locked in and worked at it. J Kidd SALUTE!

  • giogolo

With G. Paytons excellent D which guarded Jordan during 96 finals id Say he’s in the top 5. No way stockton and cousy cud do it. Passing is normal for great pgs.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

better than stockton? hmm… possibly. not sure.

  • Aurélien

Dear Ed, Slam or whoever read this.

I’m a French Fan of Jason Kidd since the first time I saw him playing Duke … yeah, I was young back then now I’m 33.

You can’t write on paper how happy I am, watching all those struggle seasons & Finals and finaly my wife can say “how that’s the first time I see Jason Kidd smiling on TV!”.

    Anyway.
You guys wrote a few articles about Kidd and I thank you for that, but I’ll always remember, as a suscriber then, receiving an issue with Jason Kidd on the cover. I dropped everything and jumped to the page only to seing 2 pages of comments on how Jason Kidd compares to Marbury, then finaly how Marbury is the best PG of the existence of the game.
I was badly hurt, waiting years for an article and seing that bullsh*t, I didn’t suscribe the 2 following years.

May I suggest you write something about the guy now?
I mean about him, about how scoring 0pts can have a tremendous impact on a game, how he block Lebron James or how he killed Kobe?
Seriously, he’s +20 when on the floor in the NBA Finals can’t anyone see?

    Peace.

    Aurélien “Kidd32″ from France.

PS : love you guys anyway.
