Joe Bryant: ‘I Still Think [Kobe] Has 3, 4 or 5 More Years’

Nobody knows how much longer Kobe can play for, but his pops doesn’t think the Lakers superstar will be hitting retirement anytime soon. In a Q+A with the L.A. Times, Joe Bryant said he thinks Kobe can go on for another three-to-five years: “You’re not going to run as fast. You’re not going to jump as high. You have to pick your moments. The great example when he picked his moment was the playoff game when he went down the middle and dunked, the one he had against [New Orleans center Emeka Okafor] in Game 5 of the first-round series. That was checkmate. He’s a warrior and understands the game. All players have injuries. It’s part of it and how he can manage it. He’s been doing a good job with that. Nobody is going to run and jump [like] when they were 18 or 19. It’s impossible for people to think that. As long as he’s enjoying the game and keeps the two seven-footers [Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum], I still think he has three, four or five more years to play at a high level.”

    I agree with Mr. Bryant.

  • robb

Kobe can do that. His skill set and understanding of the game plus his determination will allow him to adjust.

I believe Joe Bryant would look more athletic on a basketball court right now than Kobe Bryant.

  • Yesse

I agree, but i doubt Kobe will be as good as he was these next years. You can see him getting older.

I think he can play another five years, but he needs to develop better shot selection, and pick his spots a little better in these later stages of his basketball life…He doesn’t have young legs anymore so he can’t get away with the same stuff he has in the past.

Kobe is not really old, 32 going on 33 isnt old. But i think its tha miles he has more than his age. He’s been doin this at a high level for years and years. It is starting to catch up to him but he’s still Kobe Bryant

Truthfully, Kobe could play another 6-8 years as an average shooting guard. But playing at the level where we expect him to lead the Lakers to another title, I’d agree with Joe.. 2-3 years. It’ll be interesting to see how he plays next year coming off a very tough playoff loss with most likely a different roster.

I think Kobe probably does have 2-3 more years of playing at a high level. But, he really needs to improve his shot selection. If he does that, then’ll he’ll end his career on a great note.

I think Kobe has ten more years. It just depends on how much KOBE wants to play as he falls behind in the “best player right now” discussion every year. Does he really want to be top-7? Top-10? Top-15? Top-30?
Kobe said a while ago, if he can no longer be “the man” then put a fork in him. Kobe is so good that he can play till he’s 45. Will he WANT to is the question.

  • rich

i think he needs another guard to make his life easier. aaron brooks or something like that

  • JTaylor21

As long as people still think of him as the “man” on the Lakers, the guy will play until his 50s.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

I am shocked, SHOCKED I SAY! that JTaylor does not vehemently disagree with Joe Bryant!

  • Karley

He definitely has couple more seasons.. I just don’t like him so it would be nice to never see him get his sixth ring. Yes if he earns it that’s great but then everybody starts comparing to MJ and he ain’t even close

  • add

more like 2 dominant seasons left, but after that i don’t think he’ll be a game changer, still a very good player, but not a game changer

Not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, but Kobe might have 7 years left. And when I say that, I really mean it, and I’m not just blowing smoke at you Kobe/Lakers fans. lol

  • Will

i think its funny how many people can tell Kobe what he needs to do for his basketball career. the one stat I KNOW that counts more than anything is this…Kobe and Micheal are 100 percent at getting their rings while playing for Phil Jackson. Unless the lakers somehow get ellis and howard, i don’t think hes going to get another one. which is disappointing to a fan of the lake show and of the game like myself…

  • http://asd xero

Whenever the name “Kobe” comes up… all the haters started on the same old thing we’ve been hearing for the past many years… MJ. Just leave him alone (YES MJ was the best and emulating the best isn’t bad either.) Its annoying …

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Kobe will keep playing and gaining more and more fans as he will be the last old guy left someday in this league when hes like 40 and everyone will root for him.

  • T-Money

As Jukai said, Kobe could have 3 or 10 more years. 2-3 if he absolutely wants to be the main scorer on the Lakers and not win any more rings. 10 if he’s okay with gradually falling back and letting the bigs dominate, and add more ‘chips. They will need to trade Artest soon though, there’s not enough speed on that starting unit.

I think at this stage he can keep playing for as long as he likes. If they can make some key additions to the roster and more importantly, if the way the Lakers play on offense is suited to take advantage of two 7 footers on the court then there is no real issues. It will come down to whether or not Kobe channels his inner Paul Pierce (and looks to team play) or he channels is inner Iverson (and heads to Italy).

  • john

wow kobes dad thinks he can still play sick news

  • MikeC.

@Will – are you saying that Kobe and MJ won championships in 100% of the seasons they were coached by Phil Jackson?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kobe can play for at least 5 more years at high level, averaging 25 points per game. Kobe works in the off season, keeps himself in shape. BOOK IT!!

  • Zabba

Kobe has 3-5 more GAMES in him, tops. Book it.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com TheBigL

    Lol @ zabba

  • spamslots

He can play that many years more if he starts playing Ray-Allen-style and purely does catch-and-shoot or post-up. And on defense, they’ll need to match him up only with bigger guys who won’t expose his loss of foot speed as much and use the quickness of his hands. It’s purely up to Kobe. If he’s willing to change his play style and put up with increasing pain, he can probably play for quite a lot longer, but he’ll need to let go of his mindset that he’s the no.1 option.

  • http://www.walshsportsblog.com Darren

He doesn’t seem like the type of guy who could settle into a role as he gets older. I think he’ll retire before his skills erode too far, maybe even play in Italy like he always said.

  • http://wwww.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

hes only getting older..less athletic.. more angry at his teammates.. cussing more… older
