Kyrie Irving to Only Workout for the Cleveland Cavaliers?

Irving, the presumed top overall draft pick, will likely only show the Cavs what he can do in workouts. From the Morning Journal: “There’s a chance Duke point guard Kyrie Irving’s pre-draft tour might consist of one stop. ‘Our priority is Cleveland,’ agent Jeff Wechsler said from his office in Florida on Tuesday. Irving, 19, might work out only for the Cavaliers. Don’t expect him to work out with any other players. ‘For my safety, I’m not going to work out with anyone else,’ he said at the NBA draft combine in Chicago on May 20. The Cavs own the Nos. 1 and 4 picks in the June 23 NBA draft. They are expected to use the first overall pick on the 6-foot-3 1/2, 191-pounder. Wechsler said they have yet to establish when Irving would come to Cleveland for his pre-draft workout. ‘At some point, he will (come to Cleveland),’ he said. ‘We have not set that (date) yet. He was down in Miami working out. He’s an impressive young man.’ Irving isn’t obsessed with being the No. 1 pick. ‘It’s important, but it’s not something I’m focused on completely,’ he said. ‘Preparing for these private workouts is my main focus. When I go into these private workouts I want to be fully prepared where it’s a clear consensus whatever team picks me.’”

He should have stayed with Duke and at least played a full season, get his stock up and erase any questions about his health. I hope it works out for the young buck, considering there might not even be a season next year.

Is “I’m not going to work out with anyone else” not a red flag to GMs to indicate that this kid isn’t going to have a healthy career in the NBA? Greg Oden’s name springs to mind…mind you it isn’t Portland he’s going to..

  • Riggs

you know its a weak draft when cleveland is a sought after destination.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

smartly played Mr. Irving you don’t have to workout for any other team…@papabear I believe thats the entire rationale of exiting early at this point. Firstly, both him and Selby had no intentions of staying at school more than a year upon committing, but in Kyrie’s case you simply don’t want to risk another injury to hurt your draft stock. In a weak draft where you’re going #1 in all likeliness, its hard to really argue he should’ve stay at Duke……Selby on the other hand…

How can he raise his stock is he’s lickely to go NO1?

  • Migs

@papabear – his stock is already at the highest it’s going to get… no point going back when you’re pretty much locked at 1 (or 2 at worst)… He can do more harm to his career by going back to school, potentially hurting himself or playing poorly, and seeing his stock plummet.

  • rich

hes refused a lot of things this year and its because he is 1. not in good shape physically right now 2. he is not as athletic as people want to belive
i am hoping he has a desire and work ethic to be a star though because derrick williams seems motivated to be one.

  • http://www.nba.com K Dub

I agree with rich ^ He is not 100% healthy and he is not athletic at all compared to the rest of the top pg’s in the league rondo, rose, westbrook, CP3, D Will, will D-Stroy him even Tyreke and Mr. Wall will make him look silly Idk about him i hope he does have a very very strong work ethic cuz he is gonna need it badly and yes derrick williams looks very hungry and motivated once he improves his jumper he will be a force in the league

  • irondan21

@Papabear, if his stock goes any higher people are going to start calling him the next Jordan.

I’m just not sold on this kid. I don’t see what it is about Irving that would make you take him over Williams.

  • RunNGun

Not sold on Irving at all due to his refusal to work out at all. I like Kanter #1 overall; I guess that goes to show how weak this draft class really is…

  • toinefan88

@papabear, his stock is not very high with me either. I would rather have Kemba Walker.

  • madterps

Dude only played like 11 games and couldn’t put Doo-doo back even into Elite Eight or Final Four. I’d say dude is soft just like other Duke product before him, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, etc. Cavs being the losing Cavs will draft him cause he is going to lead him to an NBA title before LeBronze get his.

cosign all previous comments directed at Papabear. Also: if you get drafted, you will get paid when you play. There may be a lockout but it’s not like the NBA is going away forever-ever. You just gotta wait a little while, but you will eventually/inevitably be stackin’ the paper.

Y’all are underrating Irving. He’s the best prospect in this draft.
That being said, this draft sucks and I don’t expect Irving to be any better than a second-tier PG in the L, maybe notch or two below Rose, Wall, Paul, Westbrook and Williams.
But he is worthy of the number 1 pick.

I agree with rigo…also k-dub you act like joh wall and tyreke Evans are bad…give them some time lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I would go everywhere but Cleveland.

  • andrew

so he’s not obsessed with no.1 but only workout for cleveland? how does that work again?

  • http://slamonline.com Tracy

co-sign nbk to the fullest. That’s all that needs to be said.

i don’t know if you guys fully realized that this is a 19 year old kid….First of all, Cleveland is a great city, second of all he’s going to be seeing MILLIONS of dollars.

3rd of all , Cleaveland has the worst team & fans in the league. 4th he still going to see millions wherever else he goes. Don’t go to Cleveland kid they a bunch of salty SEEDS with no future.

@AQWORD…dog I’m 19, I’d play for the Washington Generals for the types of papes dude bout to see
