Mock: Klay Thompson, No. 20

Wolves pick up a steal.

by Kyle Stack / @KyleStack

The Timberwolves are set at forward with Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, Wesley Johnson and Derrick Williams. Center is a sore spot, but the ‘Wolves already are developing Darko Milicic, Nikola Pekovic and Anthony Randolph (who’s more likely to play forward). Ricky Rubio is aboard to (possibly) take care of their point guard spot. Shooting guard is a weak spot with Wayne Ellington unlikely to develop into anything more than a shooter off the bench.

Some mock drafts have the ‘Wolves selecting Lithuanian 7-footer Donatas Motiejunas. After all, Minnesota still needs more big men down low, especially those who can put the ball in the bucket. And Minnesota has made a notable investment in international scouting. Motiejunas makes sense. Yet something happened on this board that makes me think Minnesota should go in another direction if this draft board scenario plays out.

With the 20th pick of the 2011 SLAMonline Mock Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select…

Klay Thompson from Washington State

Here’s what we know about the Timberwolves: they need size and they need shooting. Love is arguably their best outside shooter. (It was technically Luke Ridnour who led the team in three-point percentage.) If the argument is size and shooting then Thompson, a 6-7 sweet-shooting guard, fits the bill. He can slide into the shooting guard spot and give the ‘Wolves a spot-up shooter for when Love or Beasley or Williams backs down in the post.

Thompson shot 39 percent from downtown during his three seasons in the Pac-10. He averaged 19.6 points during his sophomore season and 21.6 in his junior campaign. He was an 82.7 percent free throw shooter for his career.

As with Williams, the ‘Wolves other first-round selection from the Pac-10, Thompson has a good head on his shoulders. He can think the game while he’s playing it. Thompson showed his leadership qualities last season as he led the Cougars to a 22-13 record (they had gone 17-16 and 16-15 his first two seasons) and to the semifinals of the NIT. What Minnesota needs more of are guys with winning attitudes from big-time collegiate programs. They need winners. They have one in Love, they’re finding they have another in Beasley and they can pick up two more in this draft in Williams and Thompson.

Thompson makes too much sense given that he could easily go in the lottery. If he slides down this far, then it’s a no-brainer for the ‘Wolves. Thompson has size, intelligence, shooting touch, scoring ability and he fills an obvious hole on the team at shooting guard. With Williams and Thompson, the ‘Wolves could improve as much as any squad in this draft.

Most definitely a steal. Most see him around the 15-20 area to be drafted.

I’ve been hearing that the Warriors really like him and that they want to put him in the backcourt with Stephen Curry.

There is NOOOOOO way this guy’s gonna be available at 20. He’s going late in the lottery at worst. And what are you talking about having a good head on his shoulders? Isn’t this the guy that got busted for weed or something? Smoking weed doesn’t make you a bad person, it makes you a dumbass. Its like if you just turned 19 years old and you do a chick that’s a 5 days short of her 18th bday. Are you gonna have to register as an offender? Probably. Are you a bad person? No, but you do have bad judgement

I would like if the Wolves took Klay Thompson at #20, for all the reasons you said. I think you’re being a little unrealistic if you think they’ll keep Beasley, Johnson and Derrick Williams (if they draft him) though….no way that happens. One of those guys will be traded and by one of those guys I mean Michael Beasley. If the Wolves take D-Will, Supercool Beas should pack his bags

Klay Thompson might be my favourite player in this draft. Total steal at 20.

Not to take away from the article (good steal) but the more I look at it, the more insane Bismack Biyombo looks at number 5

And I guess now that Kanter is becoming more and more of a number 1 pick, him at four is weird as well

I’ve seen videos of this guy and he’s okay but either way this draft os kind of weak so he may be able to fill the position for the T’Wolves but he may not be good enough to help them on the defensive side. And the Wolves aren’t trading Michael Beasley. He’s got 3 years of experience in the NBA next to Derrick Williams who will be just a rookie. They’re trying to build around Kevin Love and Michael Beasley. So most likely Derrick Williams will come off the bench and Thompson will probably start seeing as though Johnny Flynn may be on the trading blocks and the Wolves are lacking in Guards. Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, and Anthony Randolph will probably have to shift between positions in order to give Derrick some experience on the starting line up to see if he really works while Thompson and Luke Ridnour’s positions will be sealed on the front line.

I just cringe at thought of building a team around Michael Beasley and Kevin Love. I know they’re both talented as hell but I don’t see them ever competing for anything that important. Although, imo the T-Wolves have the best sense of humor in the league. And I kinda hope they stay that way… Forever

I don’t see beasley getting traded. I think beasley is going to turn out as a solid pro for a contender

@Jukai. I feel the same about Biyombo. But either way, I feel the Raptors are likely to draft Kemba Walker or Kahwi Leonard (if Knight and Kanter are already gone).

developing Darko Milicic, Nikola Pekovic… lol
