Redemption for Vince Carter?

by Sam Riches / @sam_riches

The myriad of nicknames Vince Carter has been labeled over his 12-year career produce a winding narrative.  When he burst onto the scene during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 NBA season, he was known as “Vinsanity,” an ode to his gravity-defying and incomprehensible athleticism.

After his magnum opus performance in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest, Shaquille O’Neal crowned him “Half-Man, Half-Amazing.”

Four years later, as a dejected Carter fell from his Jordan-like status, hobbled by injuries and his own apathy, Toronto Raptors fans dubbed him, “Half-Man, Half-Season.”

Now in the closing moments of his career, Carter has a chance to finally silence the critics who have remained adamant and unwavering throughout his NBA tenure.

From NBA.com:

“The Suns have long been expected to buy out Vince Carter’s $18.3 million final season for $4 million. Which could give Carter the chance to answer the question of whether he ever really wanted to try to be a winner. Or just score points. The Bulls will be one of the teams likely interested in Carter if he is bought out — similarly with Richard Hamilton, who is less likely to be bought out because he has two years left on his contract. The Bulls will be over the salary cap, so they cannot offer Carter more than a minimum deal. Currently, there is a mid level exception, which most don’t expect to survive the new collective bargaining agreement. So would Carter come to the Bulls for a minimum when he can make much more, though with a lesser team? The advantage the Bulls have is they can offer a starting job. Of course, Dallas likely could, as well, on a minimum deal. The Heat could not. Would Carter like to play in New York with Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire for the same minimum and probably start there as well? Or just collect as much money as he can and maybe go play somewhere like Denver or the Clippers?”

His best days are far behind him, but if his knees and attitude allow, Carter could still receive the one label he has yet to obtain: NBA champion.

I think he might play passionately with the Bulls because that’d probably be his best chance of ever getting a ring.

Jeez, the best and the brightest from Slam all offered their “wisdom” on this topic…that said, I would love to see Vince actually show a winning attitude and sacrifice his money and stats to go play for a team like the Bulls. Or, he could be a great sixth man on the Spurs.

if anybody or anything can whip Vince into shape it’s the current culture of this Bulls franchise. It would be interesting, but I can see it going poorly for the Bulls if he doesn’t work out. If I were the Bulls I’d go for it, but try for Rip Hamilton first

co-sign people who say Jamal Crawford would be sick on bulls… he can be sixth man, maybe score 18-20 a game, close the fourth quarter with Rose… VC too… probably anybody could look sick playing next to Rose

@slic ric what am i talkin about. kobe wanted to be the man since he got in the league. he just had to wait his turn with the big fella there. kobe always had a killer instinct. carter never had that instinct. he’s a gd player just not a franchise player. look at the facts. there’s a reason kobe is regarded the best and vince is just a human highlight reel. he could of been kobe’s pippen if he went to be a role player. because he never wanted to be the MAN!!! jayz said it best( he’s alright, but he’s not real!!) good talent bad leader. will be remembered for hid dunks after that what else slic???????

CARTER GO BACK TO NEW JERSEY IM FROM CHICAGO AND THE BULLS NEED TO GET A YOUNGER SG THEY NEED JAMAL CRAWFORD NOT YOU

  • ClydeSays

He could be an effective bench scorer. But that would require a reset on his part. Who knows if he can even operate like that? He’d make sense on the Knicks or maybe Golden State.

Carter should thrive in D’Antoni’s 7-Seconds-or-Less offense.

Vince is a mere shell of his former shell of his former self. He has agreed to one day donating his calf muscles to science to study the relationship between fast-twitch muscle fibers and apathy.

@coldasice & karma, I understand but yall are talking from a perspective of now, while Im talking about the beginning of last decade. thats why I sayed maybe 01 but it definitely was a time where people would of definitely considered picking carter or iverson over kobe.

Just for arguments sake, take a look @ Carters body of work n 2000-2001 season. He carried, yes, carried the Raptors to that epic 7 game Eastern Conference series against the 6ers. He didn’t have a sidekick a la Pau Gasol or Lamar Odom, so it was all on him 2 produce. In contrast, Kobe couldn’t even get out of the 1st round on his own back in, I believe, 2006. Carter during that season had averages of 27 pts, 5.5 rebs, 4 dimes, 1 block and 1.5 steals. Very Kobe like #’s wouldn’t u say? So, if Vince wasn’t better than Kobe, which for bout 3 seasons I believe he was, then he was @ least on Kobe’s level. But that’s just my opinion.

ppl need to stop hatin on vince hes one of thebest players he not showling lack of anythings hes just aging like everyone does everyone wont play in there prim forever all vince needs is good players to play with to win a championship

Carter still gets foul mouthed even in 2011? This is ridiculous, the guy CARRIED THE Raptors as far as he could, and he took a beating when going into the lane. There’s a reason he became less aggressive, he just couldnt take the beating and fouls he was recieving, especially when you dont get these Lebron, Wade, and Kobe calls. You guys can youtube Carter, and see that his best games this season, is when he is controlling the ball a bit, and not letting Nash do everything. You can even check out his clutch shots on youtube, and tell em he hasnt been clutch in his career. You can google his clutch stats, and see how Kobe shooting 31% on clutch shots compare to Carter and the rest of the league. People need to give this guy a break, especially since he came into the league at 22 and NEVER pushed his way out of any of the bad, good, or great teams he has played for.

What i cant understand is how a fan such as you haters of vince can justify the comments of him being lazy and worhtless. Just because a player wants off a team or plays bad in the playoffs doesnt mean that hes a loser and if you do think that then you have to put every other super star that has played this game in the same boat with vince. Every player goes through this. You have to factor in teams rosters the type of play that they showed on the count such as being a passer, dunker, etc. Certain type of play takes its toll on a player faster than another type. Vince was a HIGH flyer and his body, especially his knees are shot. This will probably be the same case for blake, dwight, lebron anybody that can really get up there and dunk. So all you retards that think you understand the whole game of basketball, even though half of you are lucky to play at a moderate level, please go home find “basketball for dumbies” and read it five or six times then come back and make a educated comment.

  • Jer dawg

The Nike Shox robbed him. I hope Nike doesn’t try to revamp the Shox line by allowing Blake Griffin wear them. It hasn’t happened and hope it never does.

  • Tray

Carter on the Bulls at SG would make Derrick Rose that much more lethal.

Carter wouldn’t be expected to control the ball and the possession like he has most of his career, but the can still score, and there’s something about a Bulls uniform that I think would make opposing teams “worry” about him a little more, which could help open up more lanes for Rose.

    I’m intrigued by that possibility.

  • Dhillon

@matt Are you kidding me? You think Bosh did more for the raps? Vince is the reason why the raptors still exist, the only reason why the Raps still have a team and the Vancouver Grizzlies don’t is because of vince Carter.
