Redemption for Vince Carter?

by Sam Riches / @sam_riches

The myriad of nicknames Vince Carter has been labeled over his 12-year career produce a winding narrative.  When he burst onto the scene during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 NBA season, he was known as “Vinsanity,” an ode to his gravity-defying and incomprehensible athleticism.

After his magnum opus performance in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest, Shaquille O’Neal crowned him “Half-Man, Half-Amazing.”

Four years later, as a dejected Carter fell from his Jordan-like status, hobbled by injuries and his own apathy, Toronto Raptors fans dubbed him, “Half-Man, Half-Season.”

Now in the closing moments of his career, Carter has a chance to finally silence the critics who have remained adamant and unwavering throughout his NBA tenure.

From NBA.com:

“The Suns have long been expected to buy out Vince Carter’s $18.3 million final season for $4 million. Which could give Carter the chance to answer the question of whether he ever really wanted to try to be a winner. Or just score points. The Bulls will be one of the teams likely interested in Carter if he is bought out — similarly with Richard Hamilton, who is less likely to be bought out because he has two years left on his contract. The Bulls will be over the salary cap, so they cannot offer Carter more than a minimum deal. Currently, there is a mid level exception, which most don’t expect to survive the new collective bargaining agreement. So would Carter come to the Bulls for a minimum when he can make much more, though with a lesser team? The advantage the Bulls have is they can offer a starting job. Of course, Dallas likely could, as well, on a minimum deal. The Heat could not. Would Carter like to play in New York with Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire for the same minimum and probably start there as well? Or just collect as much money as he can and maybe go play somewhere like Denver or the Clippers?”

His best days are far behind him, but if his knees and attitude allow, Carter could still receive the one label he has yet to obtain: NBA champion.

    Sign with Toronto… LOL

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

well he would be an upgrade over Keith Bogans on offense…

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Hmmm…Carter on the Bulls sounds intriguing. He’d score in double figures. Our defense would suffer a little bit, but the main thing is it’s definitely not a long-term solution.

  • EtheKnickFan

Shouldnt he be an assistant coach by now?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I think he should go to either Chicago or New York

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    I’m thinking Chicago…

  • Ron

I think okc would be a great fit

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Chicago would be perfect for him, but I think the Bulls would strike gold if they got Rich Hamilton. Hamilton basically chose the money over playing, though, otherwise they’d have dealt him sooner (can’t blame him for that, though, especially with the impending potential lockout).
Carter would be a good fit in New York too. Let’s see where he ends up.

  • penny

He’s possibly the most dis-interested talent in the league. If I were Chicago I’d try & get Hamilton or Jamal Crawford. More $ but better results.

  • http://bt.davka.info/ SparkyJ23

I think Wince Carter was my fav nick

  • cramzy

Only in sports do we advise somebody to give up 14 million dollars for redemption and winning and yadda yadda yadda. I for one would love to see Vince get it together to help a contender but realistically…he’d be a fool to take 4 million when they owe him 18. In the grand scheme of things, is it worth it? Is the adulation of sports fans and historians really worth it?

  • HAMMER

Interesting. Not only the opportunity 2 go to Chicago, but also 2 redeem himself n sum way. Carters O would b an upgrade. I would much rather c Rip tho n a Bulls uni. But like Teddy said, w/the possibility of a lockout, I don’t c it happenin.

  • vbosky

its actually the 98-99 lockout shortened season

  • balher

I will admit as Raptors fan and I loved VC til he left, but I still want him to win one because he’s one of the few guys that left an impact on the raptors organization more so than bosh.So let’s not even put bosh in the same sentence as VC when you talk about TO’s best ever franchise player.
……but there still that tiny part of me that wants him to lose……

  • http://bulls.com airs

    i….. like it!
    why not? ha

  • jumpman

    He should go to Chicago.

  • http://slamonline.com coldasice

    do not go to ny

  • jsmooth

Not to be a grammar guru but it’s “Myriad nicknames” not “Myriad of Niknames.” #justsayin.

  • tom

I don´t see Dallas risking their chemistry + Butler returning. I think we´ll see him in NY. in Chicago he would have to play D for which he won´t work – for a minimum deal :)

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com karma

I made the mistake of thinking Carter would have redemption on the Magic. He did not. If you see Carter play nowadays, he is a lazy defender, and does not play smart basketball most of the time. There is no passion left in his game and the Bulls won’t be able to fix that.

I analyzed his lack of passion on the article I will link to below just last week, and as one of the biggest fans, its sad to see how a passive work ethic makes the second coming of Jordan into a guy that gets bought out though he can still score 20 a game.

  • rashado

i hope and pray that bulls sign crawford, or even hamilton before they consider carter. bulls have a legitimate shot at the title, and signing this dude would be a step backwards in my humble opinion.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

half man , half season. lol

  • HAMMER

@ karma. Thanx 4 that article. I agree 110% w/everything written. There was a time where I firmly believed that Carter was better than Kobe. Even tho during that time my hatred 4 Kobe was @ an all-time high (I don’t hate Kobe anymore), looking back now, I still believe Carter was better during that era and could have been better. Had he just put forth the effort, who knows how gr8 he could have been.

  • LA Huey

Every player and fan of Eastern Conference rivals are hoping Chi’s GM loses his mind and signs VC. Vince will make a perfect tag-team with Boozer.

  • http://slam brad byrd

We need him in chicago. Boozer plays like a girl

  • http://slamonline.com coldasice

@hammer Carter better than Kobe??? r u serious???? C’mon Son!!! i hated kobe too back in the day and i grew to respect the man’s love 4 the game. but carter was never and i mean neeevvvverrrr on kobe’s level. tmac is better than vince on a bad back and bad knee. iverson is wayyyyy better then carter and that was proven in 2001. dont get me wrong. carter is a gd player. but he never shown that leadership to want to lead a team. and he was given chances. toronto, nets, secondary role on magics. no results. he was a human highlight reel. but his desire to win never really materailized. i like carter but if u come to ny partner …u better be comin with that desire to win if not go to sactown or even golden state. we tryna win over here player. either get wit the program. or on 2 the next 1!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com coldasice

and why isnt the suns buyin out nash. he put in his time. let nash go. FREE NASH!! FREE NASH!!! FREE NASH!!!!

  • http://wwww.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

who was vinces best coach? he never played on a really talented team until orlando. he played very well in nj, but that team was never more than mediocre.

  • T-Money

he would fit much better with the culture in NY. And I don’t know if Chicago can keep being a dominant defensive team if they start D-Rose, Vince and Booz. If I’m the Bulls, I try everything to snatch Afflalo from Denver. Underrated offensive player and he goes hard at all times.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com karma

Vince’s best coach was actually Butch Carter and (in a sense) Charles Oakley (who was a leader on the Raptors). Both of those guys would actually challenge Carter, ridicule him, etc, to get his fire going. Lenny Wilkins did not do that and it showed over the years. Carter had the physical tools to sincerely be the BEST player of his generation. Think about it – with a lack of passion, he is still a 20 ppg scorer for his career…imagine if he had actually pushed himself to the limit every season? He’d be in the HOF.

  • HAMMER

Actually Carters best coach was the gr8 Dean Smith

  • http://slamonline.com coldasice

@tarzan scott mitchell i think somethin mitchell and somebody b4 him jersey was his best team. u had kidd,rj,krystic, and a few other cats. they was ballin with lawrence frank as coach. he wasnt no bryon scott but he did alight. he had a decent team. and went as far as the 2nd rnd. matter of fact thats the farthest vince has been!!! vince never wanted to be the man. he shyed away from that spotlight. even in orlando it didnt really work. if him an mac stayed 2gether they woulda been a problem. but no bueno!!!

  • robb

    half man-half choker

  • Addam

He should be playing in China.

  • staywhack38

Why the phuk would the NUGGETS want carter? Hahaha hope he goes to the cavs haha Allen Iverson to the heat!

  • deadbored

MAAAAAANNNNNNN! Dont hate on VC! its typical of the too much talent not enough coaching that happens to the best of them. His cuz is in the same boat, they both could have been mvp’s! T-mac, VC and kobe are pretty much the same player, except kobe got Phil Jackson and Shaq.

  • staywhack38

Why the phuk would the BULLS OR KNICKS want carter HAHAHA I hope he goes to the nets hahaha I hate deron Williams too he sucks straight up

  • deadbored

^^^Yeah Deron Williams sucks!! Can you believe this ^^guy?

  • staywhack38

He’s on the garbage nets for a reason DROSE. RONDO .CHRIS PAUL ARE ALL BETTER BALLERS THAN THE DIRT KID SCRUB DERRON WILLIAMS. Russell westbrook will be better too eventually

  • staywhack38

Rondo already has a ring. Drose gonna get ring! Chris Paul gonna get a ring with melo and stat! And even westbrook and Durant gunna get rings! DERRON williams ain’t gonna wish ISH he sucks he’s on the garbage nets and will never get a ring. HAHAHA

  • alphabetaherculis

Laziness must run in the family, because Carter and McGrady both had a chance to be great. They just never maintained their bodies and trained hard. Just like JVG said McGrady had a chance to be or surpass Kobe at his prime, but was too lazy. Oh well, on to the next one.

  • Ronald

Giving up 14 million dollars for “redemption” and “fan approval” seems to be fiscal suicide. And if VC does go to the Chi, would Chi have the worst backcourt in the East re: defense?

  • alphabetaherculis

Why is everyone saying “giving up $14 million”. Carter has no choice. It is a TEAM OPTION and they are giving the required $4 million to part with him. So he has no choice but to take the money and move on.

  • MikeC.

What blows me away about McGrady is that the first time he ever saw a chiropractor was about 3 years ago. The guy was suffering from crippling back spasms and nobody ever said “hey man, go see Dr. Gary. He’ll fix you up.”

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

@coldasice, what the hell are you talking about. everybody has short-term memories now, Not everybody, but majority of basketball fans would of picked vince and Iverson over kobe in like 1999 or 2000, maybe 01 as well.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com karma

“T-mac, VC and kobe are pretty much the same player, except kobe got Phil Jackson and Shaq.”

No they’re not. They’re similar scorers, and that’s it. Kobe hasn’t had Shaq in 7 years, and won 2 championships without him. Last I checked, coaches don’t put the ball in the bucket for you during games. To blame VC and Tmac’s lack of success on coaches is ridiculous – ask any knowledgeable NBA scribe or players willing to speak up, and they all place it on a lack of passion and a bad work ethic for both of these guys. They were not concerned about thier jobs and relied on talent to succeed. When your athleticism fades (like VC and T’s did), HARD WORK you put in extends your career (think Ray Allen, Kobe, KG) – talent does not.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com karma

“would of picked vince and Iverson over kobe in like 1999 or 2000, maybe 01 as well.”

Vince was ahead of Kobe only during the 99-00 season. 2001 Kobe (in the playoffs) averaged numbers that Lebron is averaging in his prime and Kobe was only 21 or 22. Check his ESPN Game log from 2001 playoffs: Kobe AVERAGED 29, 7, 6, with 2 spg. Carter would not perform that well under that type of pressure. The Lakers ran through the Kings and Duncan (close to) his prime that year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

everybody keep talking about rose defense, what did yo favorite point do to him last year? please, he definitely ain’t no lock-down defender but this liability like yall trying to make him out to be is no more.

  • robb

@deadbored that was the dumbest comment ever. Congrats.

  • Karley

Umm bulls. Duh.. But he won’t choose there cause it’s all about money for them,, stupid but true.
He could get a ring and stay outta the category of CB34

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I think he might play passionately with the Bulls because that’d probably be his best chance of ever getting a ring.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Jeez, the best and the brightest from Slam all offered their “wisdom” on this topic…that said, I would love to see Vince actually show a winning attitude and sacrifice his money and stats to go play for a team like the Bulls. Or, he could be a great sixth man on the Spurs.

  • http://360special.blogspot.com/ dev0

if anybody or anything can whip Vince into shape it’s the current culture of this Bulls franchise. It would be interesting, but I can see it going poorly for the Bulls if he doesn’t work out. If I were the Bulls I’d go for it, but try for Rip Hamilton first

  • mike

    come back to ORLANDO…

  • slamfan4life

    CHI!

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Mike, we don’t want him back….

  • BRAVO

vc should play for chi or heat

  • dannyb

Send him to Miami. Douchebags unite!

  • matt

VC may have taken the raps past 1 playoff round but CB4 got us a banner. We were atlantic division champs. With VC we were…

  • http://www.specialolympics.org/ Felix

co-sign people who say Jamal Crawford would be sick on bulls… he can be sixth man, maybe score 18-20 a game, close the fourth quarter with Rose… VC too… probably anybody could look sick playing next to Rose

  • http://slamonline.com coldasice

@slic ric what am i talkin about. kobe wanted to be the man since he got in the league. he just had to wait his turn with the big fella there. kobe always had a killer instinct. carter never had that instinct. he’s a gd player just not a franchise player. look at the facts. there’s a reason kobe is regarded the best and vince is just a human highlight reel. he could of been kobe’s pippen if he went to be a role player. because he never wanted to be the MAN!!! jayz said it best( he’s alright, but he’s not real!!) good talent bad leader. will be remembered for hid dunks after that what else slic???????

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

I think Tmac was better than Kobe back in the day..

  • jking6coop

CARTER GO BACK TO NEW JERSEY IM FROM CHICAGO AND THE BULLS NEED TO GET A YOUNGER SG THEY NEED JAMAL CRAWFORD NOT YOU

  • ClydeSays

He could be an effective bench scorer. But that would require a reset on his part. Who knows if he can even operate like that? He’d make sense on the Knicks or maybe Golden State.

  • http://twitter.com/ArtemAltman Artem Altman

Carter should thrive in D’Antoni’s 7-Seconds-or-Less offense.

  • bike

Vince is a mere shell of his former shell of his former self. He has agreed to one day donating his calf muscles to science to study the relationship between fast-twitch muscle fibers and apathy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

@coldasice & karma, I understand but yall are talking from a perspective of now, while Im talking about the beginning of last decade. thats why I sayed maybe 01 but it definitely was a time where people would of definitely considered picking carter or iverson over kobe.

  • HAMMER

Just for arguments sake, take a look @ Carters body of work n 2000-2001 season. He carried, yes, carried the Raptors to that epic 7 game Eastern Conference series against the 6ers. He didn’t have a sidekick a la Pau Gasol or Lamar Odom, so it was all on him 2 produce. In contrast, Kobe couldn’t even get out of the 1st round on his own back in, I believe, 2006. Carter during that season had averages of 27 pts, 5.5 rebs, 4 dimes, 1 block and 1.5 steals. Very Kobe like #’s wouldn’t u say? So, if Vince wasn’t better than Kobe, which for bout 3 seasons I believe he was, then he was @ least on Kobe’s level. But that’s just my opinion.

  • http://www.yardbarker.com darkman x

ppl need to stop hatin on vince hes one of thebest players he not showling lack of anythings hes just aging like everyone does everyone wont play in there prim forever all vince needs is good players to play with to win a championship

  • Meer

Carter still gets foul mouthed even in 2011? This is ridiculous, the guy CARRIED THE Raptors as far as he could, and he took a beating when going into the lane. There’s a reason he became less aggressive, he just couldnt take the beating and fouls he was recieving, especially when you dont get these Lebron, Wade, and Kobe calls. You guys can youtube Carter, and see that his best games this season, is when he is controlling the ball a bit, and not letting Nash do everything. You can even check out his clutch shots on youtube, and tell em he hasnt been clutch in his career. You can google his clutch stats, and see how Kobe shooting 31% on clutch shots compare to Carter and the rest of the league. People need to give this guy a break, especially since he came into the league at 22 and NEVER pushed his way out of any of the bad, good, or great teams he has played for.

  • adam

What i cant understand is how a fan such as you haters of vince can justify the comments of him being lazy and worhtless. Just because a player wants off a team or plays bad in the playoffs doesnt mean that hes a loser and if you do think that then you have to put every other super star that has played this game in the same boat with vince. Every player goes through this. You have to factor in teams rosters the type of play that they showed on the count such as being a passer, dunker, etc. Certain type of play takes its toll on a player faster than another type. Vince was a HIGH flyer and his body, especially his knees are shot. This will probably be the same case for blake, dwight, lebron anybody that can really get up there and dunk. So all you retards that think you understand the whole game of basketball, even though half of you are lucky to play at a moderate level, please go home find “basketball for dumbies” and read it five or six times then come back and make a educated comment.

  • Jer dawg

The Nike Shox robbed him. I hope Nike doesn’t try to revamp the Shox line by allowing Blake Griffin wear them. It hasn’t happened and hope it never does.

  • Tray

Carter on the Bulls at SG would make Derrick Rose that much more lethal.

Carter wouldn’t be expected to control the ball and the possession like he has most of his career, but the can still score, and there’s something about a Bulls uniform that I think would make opposing teams “worry” about him a little more, which could help open up more lanes for Rose.

    I’m intrigued by that possibility.

  • Dhillon

@matt Are you kidding me? You think Bosh did more for the raps? Vince is the reason why the raptors still exist, the only reason why the Raps still have a team and the Vancouver Grizzlies don’t is because of vince Carter.

  • http://aol QGallday

DEFINITELY HE CAN ROCK WIT NEWYORK CUZ THEY GOTTA SINKHOLE THE SIZE OF TEXAS AT THE 2SPOT….THAT STARTING5 RITE THERE COULD END WITH AN ATLANTIC TITLE AND A EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS PREDICTION IN THE MIX WIT MIA.CHI.ORL.BOS….I CANT EVEN GET EXCITED…WE LOKKEDOUT…DANGIT!!!!

  • #6marjons

i hope to god chicago dont add him or rip for that reason i love vince but he’ll break up the cohesion that bulls have an with a more experienced rose they could go to the finals.
they do need another vet but a hard nosed kinda player instead of a flashy player. wheres bobby jackson at? can he play one and done season?
