Report: Josh Smith Not Opposed to Trade from Atlanta Hawks

According to Yahoo! Sports, J-Smoove wouldn’t mind playing in a number of NBA cities other than Atlanta starting next season: “[Josh] Smith hasn’t requested a trade, but has privately told league friends that the Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic are his preferred destinations should the Hawks decide to move him. ‘The relationship has run its course,’ said a league source with knowledge of the dynamic. There’s been growing acrimony between Smith and the organization, sources said, largely because of the feeling that Smith has been too convenient of a scapegoat. Smith had one of his most complete seasons for the Hawks, averaging 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Payroll is an issue for the Hawks, too, and Smith’s contract – which has two years and $25.6 million remaining – is an attractive target for management to unload, if, for no other reason, than the five years, $110 million left on Joe Johnson’s(notes) deal is far more difficult to move. The Hawks have looked to identify veteran players near the end of their contracts, sources said, but have had no serious discussions on trading Smith. ‘They’re looking for a change,’ one Eastern Conference executive said. ‘They would die to be rid of Joe Johnson’s contract or move Smith, but they won’t give [Smith] away. They want something in return.’”

    Smoove for Bargniani.

Acquiring Josh Smith would do wonders for Nets, but I think that Hawks would want Lopez in return. Maybe Nets have to give away some more draft picks.

  • Riggs

him to the nets wouldnt be a bad thing.

  • EtheKnickFan

^ that aint a bad idea at all.

  • Sean Bankston

Hawks are pathetic, they just gave Joe Johnson all that money last season and now they are “dying” to rid themselves of the burden. Here’s an idea, don’t sign a non-max player to the largest deal possible when it clearly is a cap killer. With Joe Johnson locked in like that, the Hawks are at best a 2nd round team in the playoffs for the forseeable future.

The question is who didn’t see this coming? Josh is a very talented kid and I believe he will flourish in another program. Good for you J-Smoove!

  • Rainman

u guys are retarded for signing joe that contract. freaking idiots…

  • MLK4Life

The Joe Johnson deal was worse than the Josh Smith deal. They got themselves in this mess. Josh could be a nice piece with Deron Williams in New Jersey.

I wish the Lakers would trade Bynum for him.

  • giogolo

nobody forced them to give that contract (Joe) anyway. Now they’re scrambling..dumb as f*ck. I really wonder what’s in the minds of these Gm and owner in atlanta . Do they still keep their job? Annd uve got guys like pritchard and cho fired. smh.

  • robb

Bynum for Josh Smith??? Man you’re nuts, Josh is good but c’mon.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Bynum played great last year but I don’t trust those knees.

  • ripslam

    To the Celtics! Please!

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Jameer, Bass, and a 1st rounder from 2013?

  • Anthony

if the nets were goin to trade brook for josh smith… they must know that they are getting dwight.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Boozer for Smith!
    I know, not happening..

  • Josh

Celtics could take him. Atlanta is dying to get some salary relief, and with Ray Allen’s 10mil coming off the books after next season that could be helpful. KG too I think.
Plus Atlanta could actually use those guys. Looks like they will lose Crawford, but a starting lineup of Teague, Allen, Johnson, Garnett and Horford isn’t bad.

  • fizzbucket

IMO the Celtics shouldn’t mess around with their roster, at least the Big Four, until after next season. 2011-12 is really their final chance to score another championship. Blowing up the team mid-season like Ainge did this year isn’t going to help anyone.

I actually agree with the fact that Josh gets way too much flack. Sure, he has yet to live up to his potential, but even if he did, the team wouldn’t get much farther and there are TONS of teams who are DYING to get Josh Smith and put him in a lesser role where he would thrive.
Dude would kill with any decent point guard.

Jukai, PG? Sure you had some coffee yet?

  • mugiwara

    bass and nelson, book it.

  • -Mas-

Josh Smith to Nets! Make happen Don….oh wait. Anyways. If Brook’s got to go then bye-bye. Smith rebounds and blocks more anyways. Plus we need someone to play with D-Will and Lopez is not that.

Funny how it took them a year to realise what everyone on the street knew; Johnson is not worth that contract.

  • kev

way overpaid for the most overrated player in the league Joe Johnson. It’s time for the hawks to go another direction. This team has reached it’s peak and just isn’t good enough to contend for a title.

  • Bart

get your face out of Bynums a$$ Bynum or Josh would be a steal for the Lakers, ooo la la he’s 7 ft tall… he still only gets 9 boards and like 10 points biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig deeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaall

  • MikeC.

Josh Smith is no Glen Davis.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

I’m sure Joe Johnson wakes up in fear every morning that he didn’t actually score the richest contract from the Free Agent Class of 2010

  • http://twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

Smith on the Rockets would be fun indeed.
    Lowry/Martin/Smith/Scola/Hill(Yao, MIller)

  • tuutu

he should go to nets then deron has somebody to pass and get more assists :)

  • Micah Fredrick

The Hawks should’ve traded Bibby and our 1st round pick for a Center like Mcgee from Washington, or no Deal. Without a center, without Jordan or Jamal Crawford and without a 1st round pick this year. The Hawks should trade Joe Johnson or Kirk Hinrich for a center a true 7 footer and a pick. The Hawks haven’t been devloping their point guards throughout the season, we never see our 1st round picks on the court if the pick was on a Guard. It made no sense to trade for Hinrich. Now the Hawks have to remembder that Josh Smith game improves every year and he hasn’t reached his ceiling. If Joe or Josh had to go thee Hawks would be better to let Joe go. Let Joe go because you can get more in Return and less money, more flexibilty. Josh showed in the playoffs that he can step is game up a few notches just like Jeff Teauge did. The Hawks need more flexabilty, Trade Joe and get something in return.

  • Sam J

Lopez for Smoove. Sign Dwight next offseason. Make it happen, Prokhorov!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca niQ

Make a move Raptors!!! Throw Bargnani at them!

  • Nick Werner

J-Smoove to the Nets baby! Get rid of humphries and a few draft picks(even though i wont be able to see Kardashian at games) and have a great starting five in D-will, morrow, kirilenko, smith, and lopez

  • ATLfan

Michael Beasley and Jonny Flynn for Josh Smith.
Since Minnesota wants to get rid of Flynn because of Ricky Rubio
and since they are Drafting Derrick Williams.

Trade works for both teams, Wolves get a defensive player in Josh Smith and they also get rid of Flynn.
and the Hawks get younger and add a great player in Michael Beasley who can give you about 15-20 points per game.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Word is that a Smoove for Nelson/Orton/Anderson deal is in the works…

  • BadBadLeroyBrown

How about Smoove for Rudy Gay?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

If the Hawks trade Josh for that scrub Bargnani I will never set foot in Philips Arena again.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

Co-sign Jukai’s 2:58 post. Of course there is the little problem of the Hawks having drafted a very capable young point guard in 2009 and refusing to play him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

to the Magic to the Magic!
    Glen Davis

  • xavier

Ill give up Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams for Monte Ellis
