Ron Artest to Play in Finland?

Metta World Peace, the Artist Formerly Known As Ron Artest, has plans to ball in Finland (despite an NBA contract that forbids him from doing so.) BallinEurope (via the Ilta-Sanomat newspaper) has the details: “Finland’s top league Korisliiga will witness some serious NBA talent in September 2011, when Los Angeles Lakers forward/multipersonality Ron Artest will join league newcomer LoKoKo Loimaa. The 31-year old Artest has three years left in his Lakers contract, but that doesn’t seem to bother LoKoKo sports director Aleksi Valavuori, who backs up the rumor in Tuesday’s Ilta-Sanomat newspaper. ;We have sorted things out and I can happily confirm that Artest will arrive in Finland,’ Valavuori states in the Ilta-Sanomat interview. Valavuori has been making noise with his antics in Finland earlier, too. In November 2005, 7,420 spectators witnessed Dennis Rodman’s 17-point, 6-rebound performance in Helsinki, and in November 2008, Scottie Pippen played for ToPo in two Korisliiga games. Artest is supposed to play ‘a few games’ with LoKoKo.”

WELCOME TO FINLAND Metta World Peace!

  • dirty frank Posted: Jun.28 at 10:32 am
    Metta World Peace IS LoKo

  • 1982 Posted: Jun.28 at 11:02 am
So how does that work? Does he get fined or something if there’s a season? I wonder how much they’re paying for World Peace.

  • Yesse Posted: Jun.28 at 11:08 am
Well, Rodman did it, Pippen did it, hey we even tried to get MJ here. I loved to see Pippen play. However i think Ron/Metta is just looking more strange everyday. I would love to see World Peace play in finland, though.

  • angus Posted: Jun.28 at 11:20 am
do we have to call him that?

  • EJ Posted: Jun.28 at 11:34 am

  • AMax Posted: Jun.28 at 11:46 am
so this is no relation to 4 loko?

  • robb Posted: Jun.28 at 12:33 pm
LoKoKo definitely sounds like a team Artest would play for. LoKoKo, loco and cuckoo sound Artestish.

  • Enigmatic Posted: Jun.28 at 1:24 pm
    WHOA.
    Dennis Rodman scored 17 points???

  • LakeShow Posted: Jun.28 at 1:37 pm
I now own a vintage final year Ron Artest Lakers jersey. I dunno if i’m gunna cop a new World Peace one or not… Who am I kidding i’ve got to.

  • celts4ever Posted: Jun.28 at 1:55 pm
    tervetuloaa suomeen ronron.

  • Tae Posted: Jun.28 at 2:12 pm
Lmao @ Enigmatic. That does sound crazy! I didnt know Dennis could score more than 6. Lol but 17 rebounds sounds about right, points?..ehhh

  • 1982 Posted: Jun.28 at 2:36 pm
He averaged 15-16 ppg when he first came to the league. He wasn’t a threat, nor was he ever beyond 4-5th option. But he wasn’t as big of a bum as most thought he was.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.28 at 2:41 pm
The Lakers: “Well… why don’t we just let him do it. If he gets injured, we’ll can him and get a guy who can hit an open shot, right?”

  • Enigmatic Posted: Jun.28 at 2:44 pm
@1982 – Rodman’s career high in scoring was 11 points per game in his second season.
Now, dude averaged over 25 points a game in college, so yeah he could score (sorta) but dude was 44 years old back in 2005, so I was mostly surprised that an old, beat up Rodman scored 17 points.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.28 at 2:45 pm
Also, Rodman’s apex was 11ppg, and he only got THAT far once. He was a big bum on offense. But he scored off missed shots and easy dunks because he could jump so freaking high and had a great feel for where everyone was on the floor (not to mention never played any help defense). You don’t think he can’t just box out all the misses in Finland and dunk on some dudes half his height?

  • Enigmatic Posted: Jun.28 at 3:15 pm
I’m saying, I don’t think he could dunk, period, at 44 years old.

  • nbk Posted: Jun.28 at 3:22 pm
Rodman could still dunk quite easily at 44. Jumping consecutively is the issue i’d bet. Doesn’t matter anyway, layups are easier, not like its that hard to do a layup on a nonathletic European bigman.

  • EJ Posted: Jun.28 at 3:41 pm
Of course Rodman could score 17 points easy in Finland. It’s not like basketball is big here, hockey is our thing. Click my name.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.28 at 3:42 pm
Ron Ron is gonna drop 75 points on these kids!

  • 1982 Posted: Jun.28 at 4:22 pm
My bad, I was looking at something that apparently ranked his points per 36 minutes instead of per game, whatever that means.

  • LilKDub503 Posted: Jun.28 at 5:18 pm
I remember when Ron Artest said he could average 35 points a game if he wanted to. Lol. I wonder how this works out for his contract in all. World Peace is not going to exist in LA, perhaps?

  • TheBigL Posted: Jun.28 at 5:21 pm
Magic, at around 75 years of age, weighing in at approx 300 lbs played 5 games in Sweden. Averaged a triple double. Now I’m not gonna get into debating which of the the countries have the best league in order to figure out who’s performance was the best. I mean, they (the leagues) both suck. No dis, just real. We ARE talking about NBA players.
Still, neither of these guys play for stats at the age of 40+. I’m passed 30 and I’m all about fundamentals myself. Maybe that’s just me, but I think debating over stats is the wrong angle to take.
If Metta crosses the Finnish border, it’s gonna boost the game in Finland. He’s far from prime, but he IS a solid NBA player. That’s a first for Scandinavian basketball. His impact in-game should be huge. If it happens. (Oh, and Ron Ron is gonna freeze his ass off. A Cali-to-Helsinki transfer ain’t no joke)

  • Norway Posted: Jun.28 at 6:01 pm
^^Finland is not in scandinavia. Stupid American… Pleace learn something about the world you live in.

  • baykusreyiz Posted: Jun.28 at 6:29 pm
i bet he doesnt know where finland is

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.28 at 6:54 pm
LOL while I’m all for bashing on the average American’s shockingly low IQ, why the hell should an American care about educating himself on the great wonders of Finland? That’s totally a worthless venture.

  • MikeC. Posted: Jun.28 at 7:23 pm
@TheBigL – I’m beyond playing for the sake of fundamentals. I’m 32 and play a weekly pickup game with guys ranging from early 30′s to late 40′s. If we can play for 2 hours and nobody gets hurt or suffers from chest pains, it’s considered a triumph. It’s a massive victory on the same scale as winning an NBA championship when we can all go out for wings and beers after and nobody’s wife calls to ask where they are.
@Norway – Don’t go all ballistic on the stupid Americans. I thought Finland was Scandinavian too. Save some room on your ishlist for stupid Canadians. However, in my defense, I thought Finland was Scandinavian because I used to go to a breakfast restaurant called The Scandinavian and it was owned by a Finnish family.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.28 at 7:35 pm
Actually, there’s a massive debate on whether Finland is considered to be part of Scandinavia and it’s really quite fascinating, focusing on the fact that Finland’s cultural identity is both Sweedish but also Russian.
So I feel bad for saying that learning about Finland is worthless. I should have said “interesting, but worthless.”

  • EJ Posted: Jun.28 at 7:41 pm
What countries are Scandinavian is pretty irrelevant. Swedes, Danes and Norwegians are just mad cause Finland slauhtered them all in hockey. 15-3 overall against them.

  • Joseph V Posted: Jun.28 at 8:29 pm
Wow, this is stupid. This guy is Chad Ochocinco part II. Both started with the name change, and the stunts just get worse and worse until no one respects them.

  • Dacre Posted: Jun.28 at 11:07 pm
I wonder if they are going to bring in a court-side sauna for him…?

  • Ugh Posted: Jun.29 at 2:16 am
You kids behave or I bring out the Wilt gag again. I don’t want to have to do that.

  • Doctor Posted: Jun.29 at 7:42 am
“Swedes, Danes and Norwegians are just mad cause Finland slauhtered them all in hockey. 15-3 overall against them.” Not exactly true. It’s football (soccer) that counts in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Only in Sweden they play hockey bud soccer is a lot of bigger sport.

  • Tuomas Posted: Jun.29 at 7:48 am
@Enigmatic: Rodman didn’t really go for boards in that game. He also had 5 threes. Thoroughly absurd to watch it live. The level of competition here is ok I guess – although I must say that if a lazy, binge-drinking, unathletic mf such as myself could make a squad… it’s not exactly a great league :) @Jukai: Mostly correct on all counts. And I’ve lived in Finland all my life. About the debate you mentioned: I’m laughing my a$$ off at the people who claim one or the other. Why in the name of Jack Haley does the world have to be so black & white?

  • Mike From Spain Posted: Jun.29 at 8:17 am
@Tuomas: I guess that everyone in Finland is adept to binge-drinking, so your binge-drinking does not qualify as a disadvantage. Now, to play on a level field, they should invite Ron Ron to a training camp consisting in the ingestion of large quantities of vodka…

  • Tuomas Posted: Jun.29 at 8:27 am
Yeah, lots of team sauna nights with Koskenkorva (in all its variations) as a special guest.
