Walker, Fredette, Knight To Workout For Jazz

As the draft nears, NBA teams will pit the most intriguing prospects head-to-head in hopes of gaining more insight for when judgement day arrives. After canceling his Sacramento Kings workout vs. Jimmer Fredette, Kemba Walker has rescheduled, just this time for the Utah Jazz. The duo could also be joined by guard Brandon Knight. With two picks in the lottery, this workout will be pivotal for Utah’s front-office. From the Salt Lake Tribune: “Fredette and Walker were set to work out together Thursday for Sacramento. However, Walker pulled out of the session due to a scheduling conflict. The duo attempted to pair up for several workouts during the build up toward the June 23 NBA Draft, but their lone remaining matchup is with the Jazz. Fredette said last Friday that he expects to work out for the Kings, Phoenix and Utah by mid-June. Meanwhile, Walker will reportedly work out Tuesday for Toronto, Wednesday for Detroit and June 13 for Sacramento. Walker is projected as an early first-round pick, while Fredette is expected to be chosen during the middle to late first round. Fredette tested well during the recent draft combine, though, and was impressive during workouts last week with Indiana and New York. With just 16 days remaining before selection day, Fredette wants to prove that he can compete with highly touted guards such as Walker and Knight.”

If the Jazz select Fredette, it will be more for ticket sales than anything else.

Bet the Jazz take the white guy

  • mb

If the jazz take jimmer its because he’s the better player….and what does being white have to do with anything? The Mavs have Dirk Orlando has jj the Lakers have Walton the suns have Nash…I could keep going. So why do the jazz take the white Guy?

  • Thefreak

Jazz is in Utah, i.e. Mormon Country.

  • dma

    You for real?

  • scott

To say make it look like Utah and its Mormon population (which is about 40 percent) would not embrace a black player is rude. I grew up on the east coast and have lived in Utah for 7 years. This is a great place and NOT a racist state. I also take offense that you make it sound like Mormons are racist. As for basketball, Jimmer has been playing great starting at the combine and through his tryouts. The Jazz will choose the player who fits their needs, not because Jimmer is white and went to BYU. Pull your head out.

@mb – Except he’s not the better player.
    Better than Kemba and Knight?
    No.
    Nope.
    Nah, son.
    Never that.
@Scott – theoretically, that’s what they should do, is pick the better player. But with Deron Williams gone, Jerry Sloan gone, and the Jazz missing the playoffs, you really think they’re not at least thinking about drafting a guy who would all but guarantee their season ticket sales would go through the roof? Considering how much fans in Utah worship the kid?
Don’t get it twisted, to most NBA owners it’s still making money first, and then winning second.
As for the whole racial thing, I won’t speak on that since I didn’t bring that up.

I agree that no team would draft a player if they didn’t think he’d be good. That doesn’t mean that Utah won’t use Jimmer’s Mormon upbringing for economic/marketing purposes though should they decide to draft him. Remember, the Rockets scooped up the best player in the draft class (at the time) AND managed to break into a new market of about 1.3 billion people in China.

@Rigo – I can’t believe someone actually thinks that Kemba Walker and Brandon Knight are better than Jimmer Fredette!!! Ha, better at what? Stop. Just stop. Please, let that be your last post. Keep watching basketball, maybe one day you will start paying attention to the game.

  • thetruthshinesthrough

Jimmer has the most potential star power out of all those guys, try to argue that all you want. Add that to the fact he is a super clean cut player, will never be caught up in any bad controversies, and is bound to serve in which ever community he ends up in, oh yea, his girlfriend is still at byu… jazz brass should be drooling over him, one thing though, they should ask him honestly and truthfully if he wants to stay in utah or test the waters somewhere else.

Jimmer is good and having him go toe to toe with Kemba and Knight MAY prove to be good for all of them. Honestly, Jimmer’s stock value can move up by competing with them, while Kemba/Knight may be at risk of losing value. Teams/owners care about making money and winning. Part of doing that is making sure you have quality players that the fans can get behind and support. Jimmer meets both of these criteria – not saying that Kemba/Knight don’t. However, I would say that from the Jazz perspective, they may believe they have a better chance of resigning Jimmer after his rookie contract is over since he is from the area and may feel more content to stay with Utah as compared to Kemba who said that since he’s from NYC he’d like to play for the Knicks one day. Bottom line, Jimmer is a very good prospect, could help the Jazz ticket sales by his presence and likely to be happy there in a small market closer to home.

Nothing helps ticket sales more then winning. You pick the player that you believe has the best chance to help your team win. It’s that simple.

  • http://www.gofastweb.com john

This is funny. of course the jazz will take who is the best match for them. why would they not?

    Yep. It’s a business.

    @LilKDub503 – Are you f*cking high????
What in the hell is Jimmer Fredette better at than Kemba Walker and Brandon Knight, besides shooting?
Can he run a team effectively?
    Can he defend?
Can he even play the point? Cause he damn sure won’t be able to play the 2. Opposing 6’8” SGs will absolutely suffocate the hell out of him.
And I’m not the only one who thinks they’re better than him. NBA GMs do too. Just watch the draft for proof.
And you must have me confused for someone else, cause I think I’ve proven on this site that my knowledge of the game is pretty good.
Sorry, that wasn’t my last post. This won’t be my last one either.
Y’all keep thinking Jimmer will be as successful at shooting 30-foot bombs in the NBA as he was at BYU.
Cause that worked so well for JJ Redick.
Wait, no it didn’t. Dude actually had to learn to defend and improve on other aspects of his game before he saw any significant court time.
But what the hell do I know, right?

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Jimmer a “star”?
    Wow.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Clicking on LilKDub503′s name takes you to the Arby’s website.
    It all makes sense now…
    Don’t quit your day job.

Jimmer is a good player, and the Jazz already have Devin Harris for explosive energy. Kemba would be a duplicate and the gap between Jimmer and Brandon Knight is very debatable.

  • http://Slamonline BossTerry

Hahaha @ Rigo @ 6:29… Thats some funny $hit.. I didn’t know clicking on names takes you to a site near and dear to them..

  • http://Slamonline BossTerry

I see you got the Bulls, how do you customize that?

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Above the comment box, where you fill your name out.
It’s got your name, then your email, and then the website, you can put whatever you want in the website column.
Your name then becomes a link to that website when clicked on it.

i’d say knight is better than both. i wouldn’t say that kemba or jimmer are better than each other, just different players, i’d like to take jimmer before kemba, but i’d take kembe because he has more of the dribble moves and better D

  • Dan

Knight is the most realistic prospect for Utah. If Jazz take Kanter or Vesely w/ the 3rd pick than they will probably shift focus to Jimmer at 12.

  • http://Slamonline BossTerry

Argue all you want who the best player available will be, but Clay is probably right.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

    Loool Jimmer better than Kemba?
    XD
Kemba’s a better passer, can run the team better, plays D, get W’s..

  • http://www.wowomg.com Max

oh and don’t click my name!

  • http://www.arbys.com LilKDub503

@Rigo – hahaha gotcha! Damn, if only real fishing was that easy. Hook, line, and sinker!

  • @Deknowz

LOL @ the Jazz for trying to convince people they’re not taking Ferdette. He has a parking spot, a locker and a seat on the team plane in Utah. C’mon son!

Looking forward to seeing what happens during draft and this next season. Once he is given a chance, the doubters will be silenced… Can he play against bigger guys?? Well, if you consider San Diego, Florida and Gonzaga biggers guys that have talent… Well then just watch the reel!

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Damnit.

  • http://Slamonline BossTerry

    Haha, Wow Max… Just WOW.

  • Seer

Jimmer will play very well in the NBA. A funny thing will happen over the next season. All the doubters of Jimmer will simply say…..MY BAD! They will finally view how good he is and simply take back all the crap they have said for over a year. No remorse…..just simply…..MY BAD!

  • http://www.buxmans.com BoydB

I would say that at this point in time, Jimmer is the best player of the three. That is why he was the consensus POY. Kemba is a close second and has a national title to his credit. But the draft is based more on perceived upside and a lot of GMs speculate Jimmer has already maximized his potential, but the other two, Knight in particular have the potential to get a lot better. That is not to say they are better players now. My biggest concern about Jimmer is small hands which may affect his ability to develop a better handle. But I think he is dispelling the notion that he lacks the lateral quickness and athleticism he needs to become an adequate defender. There is no Chris Paul, Deron Williams or Derrick Rose in this draft and I would be as willing to take a gamble on Jimmer as anyone else.

  • cds1

    1.Kemba doesn’t play defense
2.Nither does Jimmer but that was by order because he was the lone star
3.Jimmer led a team of less talented players than ANy other team to a top 10 ranking and the NCAA tourny
4.Jimmer is better than Kemba, in all stats.
5.Jimmer has gone from being projected in the mid 20′s to as high as #7 in the draft, he’s proven there is more than him than shooting.
6.Jimmer has the lowest chance of being corrupted by NBA crap and letting his ego take over and highest % of being loyal to the Jazz
7.He has said “I want to play for the Jazz” “I would love to play for the Jazz”
Jazz need to take Jimmer at #3. It has nothing to do with race, religion or any of that bullsh$t. They deserve a hometown hero that will give them loyalty and talent. They deserve it.

  • http://slamonline ordinarybrutha

Scott, there is not a state in the union that is not racist or is committed to eradicating racism. i don’t know what planet back east that you came from, but it sounds as if you need to pull your head out. One of the most segregated religious order is the mormon church. We have our work cut out for us when it comes to race relations in our country. The first step to this delemna is abolishing the denial state of existence. Jimmer would be the ideal pick for the Jazz for many reasons. You have to remember that the NBA is about appeasing corporate sponsors, so it really not just about basketball as it is creating the “right fit.”
