Dwight Howard: ‘Huge Possibility’ He’ll Play in China

Dwight Howard continues to stress the possibility of him signing with a team in China (or another country) during the NBA lockout. The Orlando Magic center says the chances of him going are pretty large. From the Sentinel (via the AP): “I’m not at liberty to talk about it, but there’s a huge possibility about me going to China or me going overseas to play basketball,’ Howard told The Associated Press in an interview Sunday in Fairburn, Ga., where Howard was hosting a charity basketball game. During the interview, Howard stopped short of saying he was in contract talks with a foreign team. ‘The big thing for me is not giving too much information away, but at the same time I still need to let people know what’s going on with me,’ Howard said, according to The Associated Press. ‘I don’t want to just sit over here and forget about basketball and waste, you know, opportunities for me to get better.’ Howard also said: ‘If I decide to go overseas, the main thing is for me to continue to get better, not to do the things that I normally do, but do better at the things I’m not good at. So I can use that talent to go overseas, working on my skills and staying in great shape.’”

Every year this time I get stoked over the Christmas showdown, knowing full well that it is a meaningless game come June. This year is no exception.

Dwight playing for a Chinese team would have an average of 30 dunks, 30 rebounds and 10-20 blocks per game and 5/20 on the charity line!!!!

This didn’t occur to me until now, but the lockout could be really good for expanding or at the very least, maintaining the NBA’s worldwide fan base. With Yao’s retirement, there was a piece on espn.com discussing the possibility of a diminishing Chinese fanbase now that he’s no longer in the league. But if Dwight Howard and other stars go over there and dominate for a few months, it would be very likely that those players would acquire a following when they come back to the states.

Is he going to purposely handicap himself and score only on face-up jumpers, fadeaway Js, hooks, and other non-dunking post moves? Otherwise, not sure how he’s going to get better against such a huge gap in talent.

Yeah, this is not going to be a good move for his game. There’s only one league in the world where centres play like Dwight. I think he’s going to hate playing anywhere else.
