Jalen Rose to Serve 20 Days in Jail for Drunk Driving

by Sam Riches/ @sam_riches

Former NBA player Jalen Rose has had a rough couple of months. First, there was the controversy over his comments about Grant Hill and Duke University in ESPN‘s Fab Five documentary. Then in March news broke that he had been arrested for drinking and driving and when he didn’t come clean to ESPN about the incident, they suspended him. And now, he’s getting 20 days in the big house.

Via My FOX Detroit:

“Former Michigan star and NBA player Jalen Rose was sentenced to 20 days in jail on a drunken driving charge after crashing his sport utility vehicle on a snowy suburban Detroit road earlier this year. FOX 2′s Al Allen reports Rose will begin serving his sentence on Tuesday. Rose was arrested March 11. He told a judge in May that he had six martinis the night he veered off the West Bloomfield Township road. Authorities said Rose had a 0.088 percent blood-alcohol level, above Michigan’s legal driving limit of 0.08 percent. A later hospital test showed his blood-alcohol content as 0.12 percent. Rose is a professional basketball analyst for cable sports giant ESPN.”

The sentence was handed down by Judge Kimberly Small, who has a reputation of being tough on first-time drunken drivers. Rose’s defense team is considering appealing the decision. Small reportedly received several letters from community leaders, including Detroit Mayor David Bing, urging her to consider Rose’s community efforts. If an appeal is not made, Rose will be joining 1,200 other inmates at the Oakland County Jail on Tuesday.

    Nothing against Jalen Rose, but cosign Enigmatic, I don’t condone drunken driving, that ish kills.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Wow, seems a little harsh.. Here in my state 1st offenders get 24 hours in jail, and lose license for 3 months…

    Co-sign Enigmatic!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Seems harsh Boss? Drunk driving kills. I dunno if he was “drunk”, but our country isn’t harsh enough on drunk driver imo. One time should be a harsh slap(maybe 2-6 months) but if you commit an offense a second time, it should be minimum of 5 years.

  • kbj

    He better watch out for Nasty Nate in there

  • Brahsef

    20 days in jail is absolutely ridiculous for driving .08. I live in Michigan, and I recently got a DUI and blew a .16

    I didn’t even get probation, paid my fine and I’m good to go. Expensive ass fine, but nothing more than that. I even got the charge downgraded to the lowest form of dui possible (4 points on my license) and didn’t even use a lawyer.

    And, I will never drink n drive anymore. It completely changed the way I approach my life. And Lakeshow, our jails are already filled to the brim and most everyone who drinks semi-regularly has drank and drove in their life. When our country gets reliable public transportation (Michigan has none) we can afford to change our punishment of DUIs to more strict laws like Europe has.

  • logues

    night night, keep your butthole tight

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Enigmatic
    If the comments were about the issue of drunk driving I wouldn’t have said anything. But they were mostly about some other stuff. Weird.

  • LP

    6 drinks, i woulda been good to go…he musta had double shots in em…he should be able to tolerate 6 drinks…

  • bike

    For those of you that think the penality was too stiff, remember he crashed his car. Could have killed someone.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

    @Brahsef, you’re going to blame a lack of public transportation? Call a cab or make sure you and your friends designate a driver before you go out. I like Jalen and all but these light sentences for DUIs in this country are a shame.

  • Brahsef

    @LA Huey

    I’m not talking about drunk driving on an individual scale but on a more massive society scale. Quality public transportation cuts down on drunk driving immensely. Much more so than increasing the punishment. Trust me, Drunk driving penalties are usually pretty damn heavy, especially if you’re in a low income bracket.

    @Bike
    Somehow missed that he crashed his car. That does change things

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Allen, I feel you.
    My comment was directed more towards Iron Lung’s “I’m riding with you” comment.
    I’ve lost my cousin, I’ve lost my best friend, I’ve lost a childhood friend, I’ve lost too many damn people in my life because either they were being stupid and drove drunk or someone else was.
    Just last weekend a four year old boy and a 6-month old baby lost their lives over that BS round my way, and it happens every day.
    So the idea that just because the offender is someone I may look up to that I should “ride with them” is completely lost on me.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Drunk driving penalties are harsher on poor people? hmmm. Brahsef I think you are not seeing the problem here. Drinking impairs driving judgment. It’s fact. Public transportation isn’t the answer. We don’t want a bunch of drunks on our bus system. Call a friend, have a DD. Don’t drink. Just do what you gotta do to stay off the road if your drinking at all. Not saying I haven’t done it. But i’m not saying i’m not stupid either. You shouldn’t be able to just pay a fine and be back on the road. That’s BS.

  • Brahsef

    @Lakeshow

    “We don’t want a bunch of drunks on our bus system.” I’d rather have them on a goddamn bus than drivin their whip around town! It’s a cheap and easy way for people to avoid drinking and driving (Not to mention better for the environment). Calling a friend and having a DD are other great options too. The more options available to avoid drinking and driving will limit the occurrences.

    Giving jail time to every drunk driving case is unrealistic cause our prison system can’t come close to handling that load.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

    @Brahsef, I kinda get what you’re saying from a societal standpoint but the stigma of drunk driving is negative enough. To me, driving drunk is about the same as walking around drunk with a loaded firearm in hand. It’s just something that people should find completely unacceptable.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    I wish everyone arrested of DUI would get locked up for a while on their second offense.
    First offense, OK long as you didn’t hurt or kill anyone, we all make mistakes.
    But do it again and your a** is in jail.
    Unfortunately, Brashef is right about the lack of space in our prisons.

  • Brahsef

    @Enigmatic

    Cosign completely…2nd dui should be instant jail.

  • Brahsef

    @Enigmatic

    Co-sign completely

  • Seven Duece

    I hope every one of you righteous indignation guys never drank and drove… that being said, Lindsey Lohan did the same thing, got house arrest, violated that and then got probation for that. The skin I’m in, indeed.

  • RoG23

    Drinking and driving is stupid.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lights out

    can’t believe i’m cosigning someone named LakeShow but… cosign LakeShow.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Jail effing sucks.. I had to do 4 days once, and by day 3 I was sick because I refused to eat their slop they feed the inmates.. Even breakfast is a stale muffin, small box of cereal, and carton of 2% milk (warm).. And the smell, Oh God the smell..

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

    Donte Stallworth did 28 days in jail after drunk driving and KILLING SOMEONE. Just saying.

  • Red Star

    What else has Jalen done to deserve this? Seems a little excessive.

  • Eddie1

    @Red Star he predicted the Heat would win

  • THE IRON LUNG

    @Enigmatic. obviously you dont know what i”m riding with you” means. It means do your time, fu@k all you haters. Learn from this mistake , dont do it again. and i will still be fan. Did i once say drinking and driving was cool? You blowhard. and just like @brahsef said above”most everyone who drinks semi-regularly has drank and drove in their life.” so people get off your high horse. Yall fu@k up sometimes too.
