Jerry Colangelo Wants to Know: Who’s in for the 2012 Olympics

Colangelo, USA Basketball’s chairman, wants commitments from NBA stars for the Olympics next summer as soon as possible. The AP reports: “With training camp less than a year away and no guarantee of games before then, Jerry Colangelo is ready to start finding out who wants to play on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. USA Basketball’s chairman said he plans to start contacting candidates ‘soon, within the next month’ to gauge their interest in going to London. ‘Just to make contact with all of the people on our list, give them a whole picture of what is coming,’ Colangelo told The Associated Press in a phone interview. ‘Basically to get a read from them as to what their interests and intentions are in advance.’ Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and the rest of the 2008 gold medalists all committed to returning to the program through 2012, but Colangelo realizes that ‘circumstances have changed for some of the players who were on the Olympic team.’”

I hope some of the players that chose to participate in the FIBA world championships get a fair chance of making the Olympic team

On behalf of the people of London, someone give Blake Griffin a call.

They are on the national team’s roster so they will have spots available to them. Don’t think that Durant won’t make it to London.

I’m excited to see this roster, considering Team USA has fielded two completely different teams for their past two big competitions.

I assume Team USA is a completely separate entity from the NBA, right? So theoretically, if this lockout continues, Team USA could get together asap and actually practice and prepare together for a full year? That’d be awesome.

    PG – Chris Paul
    SG – D Wade
    SF – Durant
    PF – LeBron
    C – Dwight

Derrick Rose, Russ Westbrook, Carmelo, Bosh, Amare, Blake Griffin, Kevin Love

need a shooter or two though….

    who am I missing here?

    ^ KOBE !!!!

Kobe Bryant was needed badly when other players were running from the ball a few years back. Remember Anyone. I would have Kobe to provide leadership and crunch time performance ability. My team is
PG- Deron Williams and Chris Paul
SG- Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade
SF- Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony
PF- Kevin Love and Lebron James
C- Dwight Howard and Chis Bosh
Next it should be Derrick Rose, Amare and Tyson Chandler and maybe Joe Johnson if have room.

  • Marco

@The Seed It’s a very good and realistic list, although I’m sure that Amare won’t be available and also would prefer Steph Curry over Joe Johnson

  • david

PG- Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, Deron Williams
SG- Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant, Tyreke Evans
    SF- Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony,
PF- Amare Stoudemire, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin
    C- Dwight Howard, Kevin Love

other players: Eric Gordon, DeAndre Jordan, Oj Mayo, Russel Westbrook, Steph Curry, Monta Ellis, Joe Johnson, Shane Battier, Lamar Odom, JJ Reddick,

Love all the thought people have behind their lists. All great combos. Why add anymore thought into it. But, I have opinion about Calangelo. He was an NBA lackey. He sounds extremely arrogant, almost demanding these players to commit or else. As if they dont have enough to do. If the lockout is the entire year then these all stars can consider it to boost their brand and it won’t wear them out as much if they underwent an entire NBA season. But he sounds like an asshole.

    I’m in coach.

  • kyle

wade said he wouldnt play so it should look like this, I think…

    pg Chris Paul/ d Williams/ rondo (or Westbrook/Rose)
    sg Kobe/tyreke evans
    sf lebron/carmelo
pf bosh/blake griffin or Kevin love
    c dwight/amare/Chandler

I think this team could be better than the redeem team because all their young players are getting into their primes.
    2012 USA gold…

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Im in…if Carlos Boozer can get a Gold medal in 2008 for not doing shit i’m sure I can too

  • T-Money

    1- CP3/Dwill/Rose
    2- Kobe/D-Wade/Eric Gordon
    3- Bron/KD
    4- Melo/Blake Griffin
    5- Dwight / Bosh

Melo will start at the 4 just like in Beijing. I hope you didn’t have Kevin Love has no role on this team, Dwight will take care of the glass and Coach K prefers mobile bigs that can run the floor or going small and playing the Brons, KDs, Melos at the 4. I can see Gordon being a 12th player.

  • LA Huey

I don’t think NYK would even let Amare play considering they couldn’t even get his contract insured. If there’s a 2012 Playoffs, I wouldn’t be too sure Kobe’s going to play.

  • JustinToole

Kobe needs to rest and get ready for a championship run…I think hes out.
Steph Curry is a must with his handle, passing, decision making, and most importantly shooting.
I like Tyson Chandler as back up behind Dwight. I wish We could have Ray Allen, Kobe, and Paul pierce. But they need to rest.

My vision of the 2012 team:

PGs: Derrick Rose (Starter if Chris isn’t back to normal, superior Chris), Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo (More competetive than rest of PGs available and too deserving to be left off this team).

SGs: Kobe Bryant(Starter, sorry Wade, wait till Kobe retires), Dwayne Wade, Stephen Curry(Automatic 3s, especially with the court spread, anyone better for this role?)

SFs: Kevin Durant (Starter, Too Great), Carmelo Anthony, Josh Smith(Very deserving and best option at SF with ability to guard numerous positions).

PFs: Lebron James(Starter, Of course), Blake Griffin (Instant Superstar, who on this list made the all star team as a rookie?) , Kevin Love (Better rebounder/player than Bosh or any PF for that matter!)

Cs: Dwight Howard (Starter, Duh), Amare Stoudamire (Interior Scorer, too strong and versatile for European bigs), Tyson Chandler(DEFENCE).

May not be the Dream Team, but sure looks better on paper! Any one disagrees?

im not sure if it would help or hinder lebrons image to play over here. i get the impression he isn’t very popular over here.
