Ricky Rubio Admits He Needs to Get Stronger for the NBA

As he prepares to represent Spain at the EuroBasket tourney, Ricky Rubio knows that he must hit the weight room harder if he hopes to be succesful in the NBA. From the FIBA website: “A man who has already collected an Olympic silver medal, a European gold, ACB and Euroleague honours and played in a FIBA World Championship is not phased by much, and he is trying to bring his usual calm to this latest adventure. ‘I approach it with more hope than fear, and with great respect for things,’ [Rubio] said. ‘I have a huge desire to live this experience, both on the court and off it. I have never moved house before. I have never had that change. I want to have that change of culture, though I don’t want to lose the connection to family that I have.’ Rubio can expect the changes to be big, both on and off the court. ‘I think it will be physically harder than Europe – I will need to do more weights,’ he said of the NBA’s playing style. As for his living arrangements, he is having to consider things that were never a factor in Barcelona. ‘I need to find a house where I won’t get snowed in,’ he said. ‘My new colleagues have already told me where to look.’”

Maybe he’s like KD and can’t get more muscles?

  • http://slamonline.com SpaceJam

More muscles, and a new jumper other than that he’ll be fine

Maybe he’s like KD and doesn’t work hard in the weight room with a big diet?

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

    Ectomorphs of the world, unite!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ 1982

I’m glad he knows. Not like he’s had a few years to work on that or anything.

  • dahon

hire john stockton as personal coach

  • angus

take roids the league cant touch you right now

  • SikhWitIt

KD has a 7 foot + wingspan you numbskulls, he would have to be lifting almost as much as a body-builder to even start looking as thick as some of the other guys in the league.

  • rainman10

He has gotten bigger since being drafted in ’09, both height and weight. A lot of guys don’t start hitting weights hard until they are 25-26 years old. He is already ahead of the curve in many aspects.

  • http://slamonline.com Acclaimed

Haha no he wouldn’t SikWitit, numbskull.

  • RoG23

durant has a height and length advantage that allows him to be extremely effective without being super strong. his shooting touch is so nice and his height and wingspan make his shot almost impossible to block or affect.

  • RoG23

also remember there is something called genetics… some people naturally have bigger muscle fibers than others. and some have smaller. durant has led me to believe he is a hard worker on all aspects of his game. including conditioning and strength training. but some dudes just dont show as much results as others. look at jordan, he was skinny as hell but it was obvious he wasnt weak. tmac bulked up at a point in his career but even then he wasnt physically perfect. some dudes are just naturally skinny unless they take some sort of supplement to boost their mass.

    Rubio’s listed weight is 190.
    Same as Derrick Rose.
Not saying Rubio’s as strong as Rose, cause he’s sure as hell not, just saying he only needs to get stronger, not bigger.

  • robb

he looks like an overgrown hobbit

Durant is also still young, his body may not be fully developed yet. KG was a stick figure as well his first few years in the league, it wasn’t because he wasn’t working out, he was just still developing. You look at KG now and he’s still not a huge muscular guy, but he’s filled out like most men do as the get older.

Ricky should try the old time workout routine call the squats and milk program. The key to the regime is to drink two gallons of whole milk a day. Proponents of the program claim it will add 30 pounds of muscle in three months. That’s twice what the average NBA player says he puts on in the offseason.

  • hillbilly

@robb I’m not so much worried about the impending lockout as I am about whether or not Rubio & Fredette can get the ring back to Mt. Doom before sh!t gets real in Middle Earth. They have to outrun the Nazghul (owners), outwit Gollum (Rondo), sneak past the ever-watchful Eye of Stern and cast it into the herp-fueled flames of Gloria James’ hoo-nanny. (((SPOILER WARNING))): It’s hairy.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

K, Bike, I dunno man. 2 gallons of Whole Milk a day? I thought your body couldn’t process that much dairy in 24 hours, and your saying in 3 months you need to drink 180 gallons of Whole Milk. I hope your kidding. No one has ever done that, and it would be 20lbs of fat and 10lbs of muscle unless you worked out like a body builder.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Hillbilly…… that was pretty funny.

  • zach

    Hillbilly was freakin’ hilarious

  • bike

LakeShow. Not kidding. You do work out like a body builder but concentrate on squats. Not just any squats, breathing squats. Without going into detail, the program is unbelievably brutal. You are right about drinking that much milk but considering the calories a typical professional athlete burns, it can be done without ill effects. Probably would not want to go anywhere near the bathroom of someone trying it though.

lmao @ angus. I hope not..

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Aiiight Bike. I’m down to try it if you are? lol

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

That 2 gallons of milk diet sounds like a good way to piss off your digestive system.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

A study conducted in 2010 proved that Chocolate Milk does more for a recovering athlete (muscles generation, soreness, ect) then anything else. Water, Gatorade, Whole Milk, Muscle Milk, even Beer. Food for thought

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Gotta love that carb to protein ratio!

  • anen

Easy. Just take roids xD hahaha just kidding

  • JL

Shouldn’t he have thought of this when he was supposedly preparing himself for the NBA in the last two years? Not looking good for his work ethic and that he hasn’t improved over the last two years in Europe.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ nbk: Really? Why more than white milk? What’s the significance of the chocolate?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Somehow the sugar in milk is more easily stored and used by the human body then the sugars in sports drinks. Chocolate adds extra carbs to the milk, supposedly as Lakeshow said, producing the optimal ratio of carbs to protein

  • T-Money

forget pumping iron, learn to shoot first.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

NO GUYS, THE BEST WAY TO PREAPRE FOR A WORKOUT IT MILO AND NUTRI-GRAIN. IT HAS ALL THE VITAMINS, IRON AND NIACIN YOU NEED AND THE ENERGY TO START YOUR DAY.

That will be lost on non-Australians, I suspect. Actually, my entire point will probably be lost, but I amuse myself.

  • GoGoGomy

    @nbk and @Ugh
You guys don’t know anything about nutrition. Sugar and dairy are extremely bad for you especially for men. All you’ll do is put on fat or worse, hyperglycemic.

  • rob

    @Hillbilly lol awesome

  • EtheKnickFan

No cooty for 3 months you’ll be strong as an ox kid.

  • youngmuggsy

He’s a 6ft4 point guard, he’s got plenty of mass to compete in the NBA.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

LOL@GoGoGomy. Like I said, my point wil be lost but I amuse myself.
