Ron Artest Explains Name Change

For those of you wondering about the details of the “Ron Artest” to “Metta World Peace” switch, here you go. Via the L.A. Times: “Amid these increasingly difficult times of conflict and strife, I set out Friday night in search of world peace. On a stage at the Hollywood Improv, I found him. ‘I changed my name because I got tired of Ron Artest, he’s a [expletive],’ said Metta World Peace. ‘And when fans get mad at me, they can’t say, ‘I hate World Peace.” Wanting to give World Peace a chance, I met the Lakers forward in his first public appearance since he petitioned to legally change his name earlier this summer. We shook hands and I called him Ron. I didn’t use his new first name because, frankly, I had no idea which part was his first name. ’World Peace is going on the back of my jersey, so Metta is my first name,’ he said. ‘It’s Buddhist, but I’m Baptist.’ Metta is a state of loving-kindness, but the dude has yet to make it official with the state of California, so until his mid-August hearing, he’s still Ron Artest.”

LOL wouldn’t it be great if the 2k guys, during the lockout, make two characters, Ron Artest and Metta World Peace… the latter having a 50 inch vert and a 99 rating?

I hate Artest. He will always be Artest. Artest is infamous for the Pistons brawl, Artest is infamous for a drinking problem. World Peace doesn’t drink, and Peace doesn’t start brawls.

If there’s a lockout, can they make an NBA 2K game? The NBA isn’t allowed to profit on the likeness of any current players. Maybe they could do a game where it’s all teams and players from the 1980s. I think they could get away with that.

World B. Free already did this.
    Unoriginal times we live in.

  • Kadavour

shout out to World B Free

  • BostonBaller

Will he ever live down the brawl (which I did not approve of) but we tend to forget that it was a fan who initiated the entire thing with a classless & idiotic act. (I’m sure the fan never thought a player would come after him and that he could do what he wanted to do b/c he paid a little bit of money to get in) I’m cool with the name change if it happens, it’s better than changing it to the number on your jersey. lol

  • Logic in the chi

I love it fam! Logic in the chi metta world peace things we need to change so its possible for each

  • bike

Somewhere, Phil Jackson has an opinion about this. We can only hope he airs it very soon.

  • K- Fizzle

Metta world peace? How can he have that be his name when all he does on the court is everything but peace. He gets in the biggest fight out of anyone, and I doubt he will change

  • dsleepy

k-fizzle: he already has. i’m tired of the hate directed at this man for the palace brawl. yes, he made a stupid mistake, and a very big one at that. but an entire lifetime cannot – or should not – be wholly defined by just one moment, by one mistake. he has since made incredible efforts to become a better person by learning from the fallout of the brawl, and only a true hater would choose to not see that. if you want to keep denouncing an individual for one very large public mistake, never consenting that it’s possible for people to live, learn, and change for the better, then fine. go ahead. but for the rest of us mere mortals who do slip up from time to time, i cannot hate on a man who owns up to what he did and tries to change his ways to become a positive influence. i for one am proud of the progress metta has made. it reminds me that positive change absolutely IS possible, and if he can do it, then I can do it as well.
