Current Knicks Fail to Impress Charles Oakley

Charles Oakley is always an entertaining interview subject, and when given the opportunity to opine on the latest incarnation of his old team, the Oak Man did not disappoint. From the NY Post: “Amar’e’s good, he’s good in his way,’ Oakley said [Saturday] at the launch of his clothing collection at K1X’s store in SoHo. ‘He’s a West Coast player trying to translate to the East Coast. And the longer he plays in the East, the more his body’s gonna get damaged, because he’s got to take a beating now.’ In a wide-ranging interview session, the always colorful Oakley, now an assistant coach with the Bobcats and still a fan favorite in New York for his hard-nosed game, made his feelings known about the Knicks. Not surprisingly, Oakley, who established his tough-guy reputation by playing defense and grabbing rebounds, is not a fan of Mike D’Antoni’s run-and-gun system. ‘I don’t think [it can be successful], but that’s his coaching style,’ Oakley said. ‘They knew when they signed him. … When you go buy a Bentley, you know it’s not a Volkswagen. When they signed him, they knew what they were getting. That conversation should be dead, because it’s a West Coast offense playing in a hard-nosed city. You always give somebody a chance to prove themselves. I mean, this is his fourth year. He’s had a lot of time. … I think it’s just more half-court offense, and they need the big, tough guy. He don’t want to play that way, but finesse, it’s not gonna work.’ Although the signing of Stoudemire before last season was the first step in what Knicks fans hoped was the team’s return to the league’s elite, those hopes were pushed to new heights when the franchise acquired Carmelo Anthony at the trade deadline. But Oakley remains unconvinced the Knicks have what it takes to become an elite team. ‘I mean, they’ve got hype,’ he said. ‘But hype don’t win nothing.’ Oakley also didn’t mince his words about the organization in general. He has been at odds with the Knicks for some time, feeling he and close friend and former teammate Ewing have been disrespected.”

who cares what charles oakley thinks? just another example of a guy more famous for being “tough” than for achieving anything in the game.scrub.

  • T-Money

the problem with STAT at the 5 is that he can’t rebound. in phx hey days, it wasn’t that bad because Marion was grabbing 12 a game.

  • Detroit Dave

This will be D’Antoni’s last season.

  • B

These old guys need to shut their mouth… All they seem to do is hate on the current players… They ain’t play in an era with this much talent or athleticism… Oakley was a nobody that played a tough guy role… Those types come a dime a dozen now..

  • bull22

i second that charles. because he was on better teams then this outfit of clowns that like to talk too much about nothing…..

  • orlando woolridge

you can’t be serious, B. players like oak are a dime a dozen? like who? did you watch him play? I agree that its annoying that all of the players from the past seem to hate on the new generation, but they usually have a point.

  • Reality Check

    Tell ‘em, Oak.

  • the truth

    dumb azz comment b

  • SwissArmyKnife5

I say check Oak’s resume, dude did work he earned the right to talk. I’m a Knicks fan, and I agree with him 100%. Amare averaged 8rpg last year smh. Big man is the weakest position in the L right now. All Oak is saying is that the Knicks will be ok when they get some Knick type players (Ewing,Starks,Oak,Mase,)on the roster. Get rid of the Pringle’S Man, and bring in a real coach.

    Love the K1X/Oak stuff.

UM, AMARE IS GOING TO TAKE A BEATING IN THE EAST??? REALLY OAK? HE MUST NOT HAVE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION TO THE NBA IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. THE LEASTERN CONFERENCE LIVES.

  • MUBWAR

If it isn’t for Bird Magic or Julius, the rest of them including Jordan are a bunch of haters who don’t like the new school.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Caveman, he’s talking about defense. No one out west plays defense like CHI/BOS/MIA/MIL.

  • Rainman

the finesse woulda worked out in Phoenix numerous times had they certain guys not been injured one year, or suspended other years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

For the simpleton that posted above me, I’d be curious for you to name 1 guy in the league now, let alone a dozen guys, that are as “tough” as Oak was. Stupidity still reigns supreme.

  • Ivo.L

    Kevin Garnett

    but Oakley is right
Chicago, Miami and Boston are good defensive teams
Miami and Chicago have only one flaw at the 4 spot LOL… Boozer and Bosh xD

  • KBJ

prolly becuz they dont throw enough elbows and fight like he used to.

  • KBJ

i have to say he does kinda have a point, with the eastern beating , its a tuffer coast.

Oak speaks the truth thou..Knicks are just a bunch of hype, this is not hating just stating the obvious.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

kids got no respect for the past either (as shown by ignorant comments here), so you can’t blame the older guys for looking down on the new generation.
speaking of the knicks, i still can’t beat the 94 magic with the 94 knicks on nba 2k12 after multiple tries. you HAVE to play like the old grind-it-out knicks every single possession to even have a chance. like in real life, ewing can make 20 footers, but misses bunny layups all the time. immensely frustrating. and i wish i can see pat riley on the sideline instead of some random face. that woulda been a nice touch (i know i know. it’s more money for the licensing, but still).

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yeah, for a player type that’s a “dime a dozen” now I really can’t think of too many players that remind me of Oakley.
Ummm…Kurt Thomas…umm…Udonis Haslem…ummm..sh*t, that’s about it off the top of my head.
Also, all you youngins going on about these old school guys being haters need to understand this happens every generation.
Every generation thinks they have the best ballers and they always criticize the new guys.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yo, albie1kenobi, that was the one I really wanted to beat cause that Magic team is my favorite non-Chicago Bulls team of all time, but Shaq keeps whooping my a**.
Dude was a beast in ORL, I know he was even more dominant in LA, but I wish he had stayed in Orlando and stayed in shape, and that Penny had stayed healthy too.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Oak, tell em why you mad!!

  • Jono

The MAN is a total beast. 25lbs of steak won’t impress him.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

There are no guys like Oakley nowadays since nowadays you need to be able to catch a basketball from time to time. Worst hands pre-Kwame era. He was bad in Chicago and he was bad in NY. I don’t see why everybody is defending Oak. Then he went and messed up Vince’s mental when he was in his prime…thanks! Otis Thorpe was 10 times the forward Oakley was.

  • Darren

There’s no players like Oakley because the NBA has changed. It doesn’t matter if the Knicks are all finesse, no one’s gonna beat them up. The refs wont allow them to.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

@Enigmatic: same reason why I want to unlock Magic. I don’t have too much problem containing shaq. it’s the open looks that kills me. nick anderson and dennis scott are unstoppable. not to mention they capitalize every single mistake with fast break dunks because knicks are too freaking slow at every single position.
and of course ewing has to blow a layup in an OT so the knicks can lose by 1 freaking point.
i suppose the game does a great job at recreating the frustrations that all knicks fans feel. authentic as hell.

  • JP Newton

classic but I do feel that Reggie Evans is a poor mans Oakley now a days anyway

  • robb

This is not a surprise, the Knicks fail to impress even the most impressionable man in the world.

  • Shifty

Oak was a tough mofo, and was a good rebounding tough defensive gritty player, most of the first comments on this are obviously from ignorant dudes who don’t know much, Amare and Carmelo need to turn some of then offensive concentration into defensive concentration as they’ll never win a chip with what I wouldn’t even call a defense.

  • Justin

Of course the old school guys hate the way the players are nowadays. They’re all a bunch of premadonna wimps who cry when they get fouled. Half of these guys would break in half if they had to go up against the Knicks and Pistons of 15-20 years ago.

  • cab

While i like Kobe, he would of never gotten 81 pts in the Jordan era.. THe NBA changed the rules so teams can flourish with scoring. Even D’Antoni PHX team would of note scored like that against the Pistons, Knicks, Bulls of the early 90′s. So OAK is right. Defense wins championships and the Knicks dont play Dee. Check your history youngins… Been a fan since the 70′s and was going to games in MSG when Ewing got drafted. STAT and MELO is a great start. But we need muscle.. Period.
