John Wall Wants to Be the Best Point Guard Ever

John Wall has been spectacular in exhibition games this offseason, getting everyone excited about what the future holds for him once NBA business resumes. It turns out that Wall has very lofty goals for his career. Per the WaPo: “John Wall’s new shoe commercial for Reebok has already hit the Internet, but the accompanying video probably has the most compelling revelation. While explaining the design for his first signature shoe, Wall makes a very strong statement with relative nonchalance: ‘I just want to be the best point guard to ever play the game.’ At least he’s setting his sights high.”

Not really news considering I’m sure ANY NBA point would want to be the best point guard ever…

  • A.Morrison

    What NBA point guard doesn’t?

  • A.Morrison

Wow, you beat me by a minute. :(

  • http://www.twitter.com/BigFutureLG BigFuture

    Damn…that’s gonna be tough lol

  • trusoldier

you can’t be the best point guard when you cant shoot the ball. his jumper is way to spotty.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

    So do I.

  • KH10

Magic johnson might disagree with that.

  • http://www.kobebeefnba.com LDR4

He’s got the right first name but no matter how you rearrange Wall it will never spell Stockton. However, his dunk highlights from the exhibition games are good.

Not completely impossible, but very improbable.

  • derrick’s rise

    D-Rose:why can’t i be mvp? boom. mvp.
J-Wall:I want to be the best point guard that ever played.
    D-Rose:you mad?

i truly think john wall is gonna b way better than d-rose juss watch

Once upon a time in my basketball playing youth, I wanted to be the best point guard ever. Then one day, a wise old coach told me that I was too slow, didn’t have the handle, and I was white. I agreed with the white part, but it really pissed me off he didn’t think I had the skill set. So I quit. John, go for it and don’t let anyone tell you different.

  • MrSuper

^people had told the exact same things to Larry Bird, so he decided to quit as well… oh wait

  • BlackStar

Get to work young fella and see if you can make it happen.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Magic was an average shooter too, so…..there goes that notion that you have to be a great shooter to be the GPGOAT.

  • T-Money

john wall is an exceptional point guard. he avg 16 and 8 in his first year with a terrible, dysfunctional team and a bad wheel. he essentially played the year on one leg. his point guard skills are far more advanced than those of rose or westbrook when they joined the league.

  • MLK4Life

The desire to be the best is good for John. It will drive him. But Magic wears that crown and he will always wear it until another PG comes along and plays center in his rookie season leading his team to a championship. Magic is the GOAT when it comes to PGs.

  • tavoris

i don’t see any pg being able to stay in front of him anytime in the next twelve or 13 years. Dude is unselfish enough to average 8 assists with 0 finishers on his team. If he ever gets some players to pass to, he’ll lead the league in assists every season.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Playing center in the Finals has nothing to do with why Magic is considered the GPGOAT, it helps but it’s not the reason why he’s the Greatest PG. He’s considered the Greatest because of his uncanny ability to raise the level of his teammates play, his passing ability and being one of the greatest leaders in any sport. Now, if JWall is able to raise the Wizards from the depths of the EC and lead them to the playoffs and beyond year after year, he has a chance at being one of the greatest PG. Will he be greater than Magic? Who knows but he has all the skills, drive and work ethic needed.
Also, Magic wasn’t the one that led the lakers to a chip in ’80, it was KAJ that carried them through the first 5gms before sitting out Gm6 with a bum ankle.

  • MLK4Life

I don’t think John will be better than Derrick. I know people get caught up in the “traditional PG” garbage about a PG having to average so many assists and whatnot. But the number one statistic for a PG isn’t assists or FG percentage, it’s wins just like a quarterback. The biggest reason for the Bulls winning 62 games wasn’t their defensive mentality brought in by Coach Thibs, it was Derrick carrying them offensively all season. John will, in my opinion, be a better overall player than Westbrook though unless Russell learns how to operate at different speeds rather than just going full speed all the time. I’d also warn everyone against taking these summer league games seriously. You cannot judge these guys really until the NBA season begins and everyone is playing at a high level on both ends of the floor. The only thing we really know about John from this summer is he’s been in the weight room and he’s fully healthy. We’ll see if his game has improved when the season starts.

I live in Maryland so I watch a ton of Wizards games and I think Wall has a long way to go in the maturity department before he can be an elite PG.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I think he’s already the best all-time. just wait and see. Magic, Stockton, Zeke etc. could never do what Wall can.

  • http://slamonline slams chuck barkley

No doubt wall will be a good pg but gpgoat is prolly not reachable for him..rose is better then him to me n has a betta chance to be in the gpgoat title then wall tho rose prolly won’t reach dat status eitheR

  • greg

rose aint perfect yet either and wall will probably catch up some. i dont think either is a very creative passer, but it shouldnt matter much. they will both continue to have high turnovers though. wall prolly will never have rose’s ablility to finish in traffic, but rose doesnt have wall’s insticts of defense yet. wall will be more like a taller less smart rondo, and rose is just another animal in himself. dont think either will be better than the prime of d- will or cp3 tho. that year chris had when kobe won mvp was better than anything either of those guys will do

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Slam fix your system.

  • MLK4Life

If Rose would have had another weapon around him, like a capable two guard, he could have averaged 25 and 10 easily…and they would have gotten by Miami. They are another offensive weapon away from Rose having that stat line. A few seasons of 25 and 10 would be right up there with Chris and D-Will’s best seasons.

  • http://sajkflf.com Jukai

Magic had a great midrange jumper, c’mon now. He just never could shoot threes.
But yeah, I mean, everyone wants to be the best. At least I’d hope. Not news.

  • http://slamonline slams chuck barkley

@jukai magic had a ok mid range jumper most his points came. From gettin in the lane against smaller pgs..

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The last PG to avg. 25+ppg/10+apg was Tiny Archibald in ’72. So if Magic, Zeke, Stockon, CP and DWill never had a 25/10 season, what makes you think Rose can?

  • bull22

again all talk and all about nothing. number 1-try getting the wizards into playoffs 2-make it on an allstar team 3-stay healthy 4- better your teammates
    5-win mvp 6 lead a team to 60 wins, etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc….. but guess
what wall-butt kissers??? he has achieved none of the above! hahahahahahahhahahahahaha

  • Jeremy

bull22 must be white becaus he say some the most corniest ish I have ever seen

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    that was racist.

  • http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/wizards/a-quick-guide-to-the-issues-of-the-nba-lockout/2011/10/11/gIQAon1ZbL_story.html unf*ckwitable

Most of the great players set high goals. Its the competitve edge thats sets the truly great players apart imo.

  • Post scoring

Magic Johnson was 6’8 and you had to double him. How does Wall help his teammates?

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

all wall needs to do is get a little stronger… he can be better than derrick rose and I think he can develop just as much finishing ability as him.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

honestly john wall has HOF potential… ya’ll know this

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

I believe in him. But he has a lot of catching up to do.

  • @Deknowz

D-Rose vs J-Wall Eastern conference finals?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

I agree, people make way too big of a deal about the pure pg bs. Lot of people are bringing up john stockton but if you ask me gary payton was a much better player than him and he was more of a scoring pg.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Its funny to see people twist their arguments for certain players. For john wall its, oh, he had no one to pass to and he had to play on this dysfunctional team so him getting the amount of points and assist he got was phenomenal even though he played for a good coach. For kevin love its, oh, his teams sucks and his numbers are deflated, if he so good why didnt his team win more even though he plays for a horribly inexperienced coach. Dont know what team these dudes watching but rashard is one of the best stretch 4′s in the game, nick and blatche are two of the best young scorers at their position. You can just lob the ball to the sky and javele can get it, so all this he had no one to pass to is a big lie. the team may of been dysfunctional but blake plays for the clippers, it gets no more dysfunctional than that and look what he did.

  • Kadavour

if you assess skill sets, the Wall vs Rose comparisons are better defined.
    handle: Wall
    vision: Wall
    Passing ability: Wall
    Attack the Basket: Rose*
    Shooting: Rose
    Finish in Traffic: Rose*
    Defensive Awareness: Wall
    Basketball IQ: Wall
    * – Wall wasn’t fully healthy, but i won’t judge him in these categories vs Rose until I see him against NBA defenses, so Rose gets the nod.

As far as production goes, last year Derrick Rose was a better player. When it comes to talent and potential, i’m betting long on John Wall. This kid personifies the future of the point guard position in the league.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The greatest PG of all time isn’t even in the NBA….
    Sergei Bazarevich

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Handle:Rose(john wall committed more turnovers last season than Derrick ever has and Derrick has shown he has a better crossover)
ATB: Rose(even if he was healthy, dont matter)
    FIT: Rose
Defense:Rose( wall was horrible on defense last year, but he gets steals though)
B-Ball IQ: Becoming a two time all-star,Roy,Mvp,all-nba team, all-nba rookie, all-nba defensive team, gold medal winner and playoff participant each year in just three seasons accounts for nothing.smh

  • MLK4Life

D-Rose’s handles are only behind CP3 and D-Will. No way in the world John has better handles than him. Don’t know how anyone can come up with that. It seems like people are still not believing in Rose after this past season. Ridiculous. I guess some people just don’t have the ability to be objective and actually watch him play.

  • zach

MLK: Stop it. The point of the whole thread is Wall’s potential. Compare Rose now all you want to the guy that just finished his ROOKIE year, but bball heads know who the best long term bet is at the position. Wall just has much more potential that Rose. Plus, you talk about how the idea of a pure point guard is overrated, but CP3 and DWill are better pgs than Rose. Wall’s game is much closer to those two than Rose’s game is, and Wall is bigger than Rose with better defensive instincts.@ Slick Ric: Comparing a guy who had 3 seasons to get stronger to an injured rookie’s ability to attack the basket is a reeeeeaally legit argument. Good job, you really convinced us on that point. Turnovers compared to a rookie? Yup, Rose has the edge there too. Using your logic, let’s just start using the accomplishments of all NBA vets when debating the POTENTIAL of first year guys. That makes sense…NOT! You two need to stop slurping Rose for a second, and realize what we’re talking about.

  • canon

Wall will be a PG version of D-wade. They both have a smooth style of play.

  • seriousblack

Rose bandwagoners always get their panties in a bunch on Wall threads. Even Enigmatic recognizes Wall’s potential>Rose’s potential. Easiest way to spot a Wall hater? When they start listing Rose’s accomplishments to date against the injured rook smh.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

easiest way to spot a b*tch is when he is trying to replying to someone who wasnt talking to him. Im just simply stating my opinion b*tch. He can assess their skill-sets but I cant. stfu lame, I dont give a f*ck about what enig recognizes, he’s no professional scout.

  • MLK4Life

Who are these bball heads you speak of? You? lol. These are all opinions. My opinion is that John Wall has a ways to go and I see people getting excited about summer league games. Stop it. Derrick Rose is an MVP. Led his team to 62 wins. People bring up Rose because if John wants to be the best of all time, he has to at least be better than Chris, Deron and Derrick. These three guys aren’t going to just stop playing. So stop the nonsense. Rose had a better overall rookie year in my opinion. Watch Derrick in his first playoff game playing like he was a veteran. Could John have matched Rondo and taken the Celtics to 7 games in the first round like Derrick did? Go into Boston in Game 1 and get a win with 36 points? I’ll wait for the answer.

  • http://aol QGallday

this young brother has all the tools necessary to make that happen

  • Patrick

Jose Calderon, Steve Blake, Derek Fisher..they don’t wanna be the best…
