Jordan Crawford: ‘I Can Be Better Than Michael Jordan’


Up until now, Jordan Crawford’s biggest accomplishment had been dunking on LeBron James during an offseason run (the infamous dunk footage that Nike tried to confiscate in 2009.) He’s now talking about one day being better at basketball than Michael Jordan. The Wizards may not be a very good team right now, but they do set some awfully big goals for themselves. Per the WaPo: “On the bio section of his Twitter account, @jcraw55, Jordan Crawford mentions a very audacious ambition: ‘On A Mission to become the GREATEST!!!!!! WHY NOT?’ Get out of the way, Dwyane. I want to be the best. (Nick Wass – AP) Seems like an decent motivational tool. Dream big, achieve big. When asked to elaborate on that statement last month at the Impact Basketball Competitive Training Series in Las Vegas, Crawford explained how he believes Jordan will go down as the greatest to play the game — just not the Jordan you would expect. ‘I don’t tell nobody, but I feel like I can be better than Michael Jordan,’ Crawford said, without the slightest hint of sarcasm. ‘When I’m done playing, I don’t want people to say, Michael Jordan is the best player. I want that to be me. That’s how I am. That’s how I was built.’ Um, what? You realize people will look at you sideways and think you’re crazy for saying that, right? ‘Yeah, I know that, I definitely know that. But I’m not settling for anything less,’ Crawford said. ‘I feel like I’m better than him, anyway. My mom is going to say I’m better than him.’”

    Most people defending him are defending his ambition, the fact that he “wants” to be better than MJ. Ambition is great, everyone should work toward being the best at what they do. I think the issue is that he goes on to say that he feels he “is” better than MJ, “is” implying “already”. There is a difference between desire and delusion.

    Striving to be better and motivating yourself is one thing..but if you say “I feel like I’m better than him, anyway”, it kind of negates all of the motivation talk, especially if he thinks he is already “better”.

    Don’t really wanna comment on Crawford’s statements. That’s just stupid!
    But @EtheKnickfan: I’m totally with Sean B’s comment. That’s just a horrible comparison. Logo ain’t even in consideration if you’re talking who could be G.O.A.T.! I mean he was nice and all but if you’re looking for the G.O.A.T. you’re talking Mike (and he really is), Magic, Bird, Big O, Russell, Chamberlain, Kareem…those guys. And believe me, Mike will always be relevant, when it comes to Basketball, not only because of Jordan Brand, but because first and foremost of his game and accomplishments, but also because he has become a cultural icon! Muhammad Ali will always be relevant, Pelé will always be relevant, BIG and Pac will always be relevant! Of course there will always be discussions and different opinions, but if you are one of the all time greats (no matter what you), you won’t be forgotten.

    At what? Try taking baby steps before climbing Mt. Everest young gun. For those irked by heads with negative remarks, get a grip. No one is questioning his ambition, but rather his inability to keep things in perspective. Is he the best of his draft class? The best at his position? The best at any particular skill? Instead of talking about being better than Jordan, Mike just focus on being the best Jordan, Crawford and the rest will follow…

    I like Jordan Crawford as a player a lot. But I don’t know about that. But if he puts his mind to it then Who Knows. I would love a player on my team to have that kind of ambition. But if Eric Gordon said something like this than it would probably be more realistic/believable than Jordan Crawford saying it. Crawford is a good player and a great scorer. I watched him at Indiana and Xavier University.

    Great attitude unrealistic but hell its about time someone aspired to be the greatest. I love his honesty I’m sick of all this fakery by Kobe and other great players everyone knows they want be better than Jordan. He will be a great player (aint buying the Jordan thing though).
