Kobe Bryant: Kwame Brown Was Afraid of Getting the Ball

Fairly or unfairly, people have always accused Kobe Bryant of not passing the ball to his teammates. But, really, after reading this Kwame “Hands of Stone” Brown story, can you blame the guy for occasionally hogging the rock? From the WaPo (and YouTube): “I got to say, it was tough doing it that year (2008). I was playing with guys, God bless them — God bless them — but Kwame Brown. Smush Parker. We had one game right before…by the way, what I say here, I say directly to them, see what I’m saying, I don’t talk behind people’s back. Things that I say to you, I’m comfortable saying this to them and I’ve said this to them…But like, the game before we traded for Pau, were playing Detroit and I had like 40 points towards the end of the game. This is back when Detroit had Rasheed [Wallace], Chauncey [Billups] and those guys, so we had no business being in the game. So down the stretch of the game, they put in a box and one. So I’m surrounded by these players, Detroit players, and Kwame is under the basket, all by himself. Literally, like all by himself. So I pass him the ball, he bobbled it and it goes out of bounds. So we go back to the timeout and I’m [upset], right? He goes, ‘I was wide open.’ ‘Yeah, I know.’ This is how I’m talking to him, like, during the game. I said, ‘You’re going to be open again, Kwame, because Rasheed is just totally ignoring you.’ He said, ‘Well, if I’m open don’t throw it to me.’ I was like, ‘Huh?’ He said, ‘Don’t throw it to me.’ I said, ‘Why not?’ He said, well, ‘I’m nervous. If I catch it and they foul me, I won’t make the free throws.’ I said, ‘Hell no!’ I go to Phil [Jackson], I say, ‘Hey Phil, take him out of the game.’ He’s like, ‘Nah, let him figure it out.’ So, we lose the game, I go the locker room, I’m steaming. Steaming. I’m furious. Then, finally I get a call, they said, ‘You know what, we got something that’s happening with Pau.’ I was like, ‘Alright. Cool.’…That’s what I had to deal with the whole year.’”

Kwame Brown was good last season for the Bobcats. Kobe is a d***he. That is all.

  • Ali

Shi* from a fans point of view you can see how timid Kwame is on the court…Damn shame.

why does everyone knock kobe’s passing or lack of it?.. he’s a scorer.. that’s like criticizing shaq for using his power and size and develop a mid range jumper..

  • http://sajkflf.com Jukai

I think it’s a dbag thing for Kobe to tell this story, but f*ck am I happy he told it. Made me chuckle quite hard.
@Unrel: Shaq -IS- criticized for not developing a midrange jumper. Every other top-10 center other than Russell developed one. It’s the second biggest knock on Shaq, outside of his lack of wanting to stay in shape…

  • http://sajkflf.com Jukai

And I think TADone had the best nickname for Kwame, “Brick Hands Brown”

  • Justin

Jeremy, Kobe has also played in 60 more games than MJ. Kind of puts the assist totals in persepective doesn’t it?

  • Zabbah

Jukai, you’re forgettubg Shaq’s free throws.

Funny you should mention Eric Montross because I was thinking about him while I was reading this piece. Alot of people don’t know that lack of confidence was what stopped him from having a long career. They say that on a daily basis his performance at practice was twice the level then anything that he ever displayed during an NBA game. Once the lights went on, the nerves took over.
This leads to a discussion that I’ve had countless times. Is the “nerves thing” a personality trait that can never be completely overcome, or can it be addressed, just as a player can improve his jumper or ball-handling skills?

We as fans sometimes exaggerate. But after hearing that story from Kobe, playing with Kwame was every bit as bad as it looked. And it was MISERABLE watching that guy night in and night out. Couldn’t catch, couldn’t finsh, always looked scared.

And btw, Street Cred Police, this was not snitching. Off the court business = snitching. On the court during the game business = fair game.

  • BostonBaller

Has anyone ever heard of Bill Wennigton, Brad Sellers, Dave Corzine, Granville Waiters? Jordan has…lol

  • BuzzerBeater

@Chuckaz lol can add this to the list, very harsh vid on Kwame

The hatred towards Kobe on this board is sickening, seriously. What did he say that was so wrong? That Kwame doesn’t like the ball in his hands, that he drops it out of fear? We knew that already – its common knowledge to those that actually watched that terrible squad. I love how you say things like “snitch” etc. He’s a effing basketball player, not a criminal. Also, J-Tay, at the peak of the Lakers run, Kobe averaged prime Lebron like number in the playoffs at the age of 22. Check his game logs for the 2001 playoffs – 27, 7, 6 is nothing to sneeze at. Stop hating for once, damn.

The funny ish about these Kobe haters is that They think the BS they be typing on here gon stop Kobe from Being a HOF

  • Jeremy

JTAYOLR is a Kid nevermind him

  • Robb

cant even spell taylor right smh.

  • #6marjons

even if this is true i still think lebron travelled

  • Leo

It is so funny how much people hate on Kobe. And all this does is increase his jersey sales! Kwame Brown is a good guy, but he stole millions. But he was a good defensive player for LA. Offensively, he played for the other team. And Actually he played very well for the Bobcats last year for the guy that drafted him initially. Unfortunately, college would have done him a great service. But anyway, KOBE still loves you!!

  • robb

I’m glad Kobe’s telling these stories so people know. Sure, he forces many shots, but you can’t blame him because sometimes players just didn’t want to score, someone had to do it. There are many things we don’t get to know, only those people who are actually on the floor during a game know this kind of things.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

If it’s basketball-related and he’d say it to a guy’s face, then I don’t see a problem with it. It’s not like he was calling him a “b*7ch” or a “p*55y” (but Phil did, haha).
Besides, he’s not saying anything we don’t know. It’s hard enough playing with a guy who has problems finishing easy buckets. When the guy’s too scared to try, that’s beyond frustrating.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

kobe didn’t have to tell this story….like this is stuff you don’t do to your teammates.. smh

  • duhwinning

was was smushs name in this article? he was a solid point guard and did what phil asked him to- give kobe the ball. And the reason for the kobe hate; is hes a polarizing figure either hate him or love him. I respect his game but I strongly dislike him. More of a fan of post play so I took sides with shaq in that whole deal and I think the way the lakers got pau was some shady ish. Hope Jerry West got a ring for that bulls@hit. Kwame is a bust but why air out old news. Please please stop comparing Kobe to MJ different eras different times, different game. Go buy a pair of Jordan X’s and read the bottom of them, Kobe hasnt done half that.

  • Rainman

its Funny, this team before they got Pau, was still good, they were 10 + games above .500 in 08, despite the scrubs.

years b4 they were horrible, that year? not really THAT bad, i was surprised at their record the whoel year to that point

  • Jeremy

If you really Watched The Games You Could See How Timid Kwame Is
all you got to do just look up stone hands kwame brown on youtube

  • golakeshow

Kwame brown should get a set of balls. What an asshole. F you kwame brown,go do it with shaq you bit@h

  • Kadavour

Dude relayed an anecdote about ON-COURT happenings. Where else could you get the insight that Kwame was nervous about catching the ball because he was afraid to go to the foul line? This IS NOT snitching. Smush, Kobe, Devean George, Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown. outside of Odom, which of these players could start on ANY squad from 2004 to today? Bench was Jumaine Jones, Chris Mihm (Mihm was nice, career cut short by injury), Luke Walton, and I can’t remember the rest. I can’t hate on this man even if i wanted to…Same goes for CLE LBJ, can’t hate on him. MIA LBJ i have some issues with though.

  • el_larsen

PFFFFFFFF this is not something to put on air .keep your mouth shut .kobe is a dickhead

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I never said Kwame was good. Dude was scared, and he was bad on offense. This was obvious to everybody that watched the game. His confidence has been shot for years on offense.
But, I firmly believe you don’t go around bad mouthing people like this. I think it’s lame, and it’s wack.
Kobe was easily the best player on that team and he had a wack team. I’ve extolled the virtues of what he did with that team many times. But, he still quit, and he still didn’t need to make these comments.
Just because something is true, doesn’t mean it needs to be said. It’s amazing to me how many people think that being honest is somehow protection against the rules of decency. It’s not.
Kobe took a shot a dude so far beneath him it just feels petty. Just like when Jordan does the same thing. You don’t have to take shots at bums, you’re a Hall of Famer. You just say “Things were tough, we needed more talent”, and then you move on.
    This was petty.

  • Marcel

Kwame brown was decent with the bobcats he’s gonna finally shine this year mark my words

  • Kevin Jackson

Listen up people some of you think what Kobe did was quote beneath him? Your kidding right?? Kobe is tame as a kitten compared to what MJ use to say to his teammates back during the run of the Bulls ala,Luc Longley,Stacey King,Bill Wennington, and Bill Cartwright? Jordan was ruthless and talk about Kobe being a Ball Hog? Some of you need to go back and watch some of the old Jordan days with the Bulls!!! MJ wouldn’t pass the rock to save his life why?? Because he didn’t trust his teammates! And when Kobe doesn’t see his teammates stepping up tell me why should he pass the rock? Kobe doesn’t trust his teammates at times and I don’t blame him and he shouldn’t trust them until they start delivering…..That’s what MJ did then once the rest of the Bulls started doing what they were supposed to do, Jordan passed the rock!!
Kwame was weak player and Kobe did exactly what he should have did once Kwame said he was afraid to get the ball!!1

  • Kevin Jackson

Remember when Jordan punched Steve Kerr in the face during a Bulls practice session? Stacey King and Bill Cartwright were Jordan’s whipping post back in the Bulls days thought yall’ knew!!!!
