Kobe Bryant: Kwame Brown Was Afraid of Getting the Ball

Fairly or unfairly, people have always accused Kobe Bryant of not passing the ball to his teammates. But, really, after reading this Kwame “Hands of Stone” Brown story, can you blame the guy for occasionally hogging the rock? From the WaPo (and YouTube): “I got to say, it was tough doing it that year (2008). I was playing with guys, God bless them — God bless them — but Kwame Brown. Smush Parker. We had one game right before…by the way, what I say here, I say directly to them, see what I’m saying, I don’t talk behind people’s back. Things that I say to you, I’m comfortable saying this to them and I’ve said this to them…But like, the game before we traded for Pau, were playing Detroit and I had like 40 points towards the end of the game. This is back when Detroit had Rasheed [Wallace], Chauncey [Billups] and those guys, so we had no business being in the game. So down the stretch of the game, they put in a box and one. So I’m surrounded by these players, Detroit players, and Kwame is under the basket, all by himself. Literally, like all by himself. So I pass him the ball, he bobbled it and it goes out of bounds. So we go back to the timeout and I’m [upset], right? He goes, ‘I was wide open.’ ‘Yeah, I know.’ This is how I’m talking to him, like, during the game. I said, ‘You’re going to be open again, Kwame, because Rasheed is just totally ignoring you.’ He said, ‘Well, if I’m open don’t throw it to me.’ I was like, ‘Huh?’ He said, ‘Don’t throw it to me.’ I said, ‘Why not?’ He said, well, ‘I’m nervous. If I catch it and they foul me, I won’t make the free throws.’ I said, ‘Hell no!’ I go to Phil [Jackson], I say, ‘Hey Phil, take him out of the game.’ He’s like, ‘Nah, let him figure it out.’ So, we lose the game, I go the locker room, I’m steaming. Steaming. I’m furious. Then, finally I get a call, they said, ‘You know what, we got something that’s happening with Pau.’ I was like, ‘Alright. Cool.’…That’s what I had to deal with the whole year.’”

hahaha. Wow, did I love this. You know that this is exactly what went down. This team was way worse then any team MJ had in his prime or LBJ for that matter. Poor Kobe having to deal with those scrubs.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Word? So is that the same reason why you hated passing the ball to Shaq?

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    you nervous? damn

  • Red Star

    Man, Kobe is the best!!!

Kwame Brown just won’t go anyway. Haunts us Wiz fans for life

  • http://slamonline.com/ Abe Schwadron

*away. Just the thought of Kwame makes me dumber.

I feel bad for Kwame. I mean sure the guy has been a dissapointing player but I do think MJ broke him early and often. As much as I have always hated the Lakers I did enjoy watching them that year because they lost a lot and Smush Parker, while not really a dependable PG, could be pretty fun to watch. Given his size, athleticism, and flashy style I’m surprised some desperate squad never picked him back up. But this story just really makes me feel bad. I absolutely believe that Kobe would say this to Kwame’s face but it doesn’t make him any less of an egotard for saying it. Remember that old Sprite commercial where Kobe was playing 1-on-1 with an 8-year-old and going all out? This kind of feels like that.

  • RaZkOL

I’m trying to figure out why Kwame still has a job? There’s gotta be better players around. Can we bring back Vitaly Potapenko? Eric Montross? Todd McCollough?…..LoL……

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

No, it’s the same reason Lebron froze in the finals. Just evening things out JTaylor.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

I’m the biggest Kobe hater in the world and even I thought this was hilarious. Kwame…smh LOL

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Kwame Brown takes the most heat cause he was the number one pick, but overall that 2001 draft class had TONS of busts.

  • T-Money

lol that’s a funny story but also sort of a cop-out. kobe ain’t passing the ball to no one. pau, l.o. and drew have some of the best hands in the league and they’re not seeing the rock either.

  • Brahsef

LOL. That’s just how I imagined Kobe bein with that squad. That team was terrible. James had bad teams in Cleveland but nothing that bad. It was great to see Kobe just literally have to go off every night though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    ^ pretty much.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    that was about T-Money

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

T-Money what are you talking about? Kobe is one of the better passing shooting guards in the League. Can you enlighten us on how he achieves assits with out having an ability to pass the ball? Thank you.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

“Hey top 10 All timer give the rock to LO every play down!” yup you guys would make great coaches.. “Quick get the hands out of the best player on the planet. He might win another game or something.

  • Jeff

    Kwame “Dinosaur Hands” Brown

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kobe is not one of the better passing shooting guards in the league. He has the ball more then most players in the league. And the Triangle also helps. He is prolly the smartest player in the league, which helps too. But his passing ability is nothing more then average.

  • http://kb24.com jbn74sb

Believe it or not, Kwame was actually pretty effective defensively and on the glass. But yeah, Kobe never should have passed to anyone on that team. And unfortunately, I think I remember this game and even the play that he’s talking about.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I see Kobe is back to snitching.
I wonder if he said that thing about Shaq’s women to Shaq’s face too?
    Fake b*tch.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And yeah, that was me. Blasting your teammates like that is wack. Figures from Kobe though.
And Kobe lost against the Suns because he refused to let Lamar Odom carry them to victory. Lamar was totally beasting Marion and every other Suns big that series, but Kobe had to be KOBE and prove he could carry this squad. Then, he quits in the second half of the decisive game.
Before Lebron started disappearing in games, Kobe was the MASTER at it. The difference was that nobody thought Kobe was scared, they just thought he was a petulant a-hole.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I was thinking the same thing about Kobe and Shaq.

  • Jeremy

    Didn’t shaq snitch On Wade?

  • Jeremy

Funny How Ya’ll Say Kobe don’t Pass When He Got 5,154 assists MJ Had 5,633 assists Kobe Passes Enough But I forgot whenever it’s a Kobe thread you see the same people That Hate him so much yet they still watch him and click on his name Like that punk ass JTAYLOR21

  • Conor O.

    Allenp… No.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    E-thugging at its finest.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Exactly. Dude has been like that though, but it’s still shady. Why does he have to reveal this anecdote about Kwame? What purpose does it serve except to make Kobe look better?
Which of course is Kobe’s mission in life.

  • http://dimemag.com Royal

I’m a big Laker fan, but I don’t understand why Kobe would air out one of his old teammates like this…..I mean if Lebron criticized Antawn Jamison for getting beasted by K.G in the playoffs a couple years back then Lebron would be getting crucified by the media and fans. Food for thought.

  • bike

Kobe may be a bit out of line here but honestly, how many times have we seen the ball go right through Kwame’s hands? I’ve seen games where it was like he handled the ball as if it were covered in pig grease. And that is surely something he could have worked on big time in the offseason. Kwame is just a complete bust and his attitude was just as bad as his hands. Kobe’s not saying anything new here.

  • http://cnbc.com New_Guy

@royal people hate Lebron and Jamison is love by fans around the league because he is the opposite of Lebron. That’s why LBJ would be crucified. Nobody cares about Odom lol

  • http://kb24.com jbn74sb

Oh, Allen. Don’t let your hate blind you. First, Kobe lost against the Suns because Smush Parker didn’t box out (aka stand in front of) Time Thomas at the top of the key in the previous game. In Game 7, he had 23 points on 8-15 shooting (something like that, going from memory here) in the 1st half, and they were still down because the rest of the team was so bad. In the second half, the got pummeled early, and yeah, Kobe quit. But the series was already over…

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

“It’s that ether, that s**t that make your soul burn slow”

  • bashmo

@Royal the reason Lebron would get roasted for a couple of reasons is because number 1 he didnt play as well as he normally does that series. That was the series where he allegedly “quit” on the cavs. Number 2 he has not won a championship yet. So its not like switching teams has given him the results he has wanted..yet. although i agree that antwan jamison got wrecked by KG that semifinals

  • David Moore

Wow this post is some realness. That’s why I love Kobe.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

  • kobesBESTfriend

i played against kwame and his brother back in the day in ga…he wasnt that bad…the problem is he played more like a small forward than a center but because he was tall the league made him play in the middle

  • T-Money

LakeShow: Miss me with assits numbers. Marbury avg 8 assists a game. Dumping the ball in the post and cutting doesn’t give you an assist. Passing out of a double team doesn’t necessarily give you an assist. I know what I see.

  • T-Money

And yes, talking about something that happened 2 ‘chips ago about someone that has never talked bad abiut you is dirty pool. If it was Smush, I’d get it.

  • kobesBESTfriend

kobe still is right though…that team was all scrubs…they made diaw and barbosa look like all stars…and i blame kwame 4 not rebounding on the last play or fouling tim thomas 2 prevent the 3-point shot in game 6 in 2006…we woulda beat the heat that year in the finals if we got passed phoenix

  • Chukaz

Its not like Kobe’s going off on Kwame. All he said was that Kwame was afraid to catch the ball. If you want to see someone go off necessarily on Kwame watch this:

  • http://www.slamonline.com McGruff

YAWN. As a life long Bulls fan, this is the same ish Money did his entire career (Kwame included). I have to be frank, AllenP is the guy that sounds the most like a b*tch on this thread, not 24. Cause that 4:42 PM post was a lesson in revisionist history. Aren’t you and T-money the same cats that have consistantly blamed and thrown every teamate and coach LeBron ever had under the bus? Word? Yeah i see you son. Old talking outta both sides a’your neck a$$ cats. Last time i checked Kobe has earned the clout he has in this leauge to make his thoughts known weather you like it or not. Just like Money did. But LeBron, despite a superteam has not. So why you tryin soo hard to convince us they are the same? Ps. Aren’t you the same cat that was speaking on how hard you was as a football player and how you was always gettin’ in dudes faces, & talkin’ all that BS? But now your that cat getting all hot n’ bothered over what another man said about a couple of scrubs….yeah, you sound real tough homie.

  • ashley

So Kobe can’t tell a story about what happened to him when he was playing on the court? Anybody who watched those Laker games could tell Kwame was afraid of the ball.

Kwame is a professional basketball player that gets paid millions. I’m sorry but I don’t feel bad for the dude. I feel bad for myself watching those games and watching Kwame not give a full effort.

Hands of Stone! wow…what about hands of butter!!? If i owed a Hot Dog stand, i won’t hire kwame to run it, cause he will bring my business to the ground!! What Air Jordan sees in this garbage anyways to give him a shot in the bobcats…this dude needs like 15 years of NBDL, in order to get his game straight. I dont like kwame at all…makes me sick to know he was afraid…i bet you he wasn’t afraid in cashing that fat check he is getting.!! lame azz

  • Drig

I remember that game…..I was pretty angry with Odom for missing 2 shots straight in Q4 without Kobe even getting a whiff of it. The last one being a 3 I think. But what Kobe said was right………and come on, dude was asked about his journey through his MVP season. Slam didn’t post that part. It’s not like Kobe said, “Wait a sec. Stop everything. I’m gonna tell a Kwame story!”. He said it to sort of explain how much Pau influenced the game for him once he came to LA.

Should change that self-appointed nickname to ‘the rat’.

Kwame Brown was good last season for the Bobcats. Kobe is a d***he. That is all.

  • Ali

Shi* from a fans point of view you can see how timid Kwame is on the court…Damn shame.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    3:01 is not me…

  • unrel

why does everyone knock kobe’s passing or lack of it?.. he’s a scorer.. that’s like criticizing shaq for using his power and size and develop a mid range jumper..

  • http://sajkflf.com Jukai

I think it’s a dbag thing for Kobe to tell this story, but f*ck am I happy he told it. Made me chuckle quite hard.
@Unrel: Shaq -IS- criticized for not developing a midrange jumper. Every other top-10 center other than Russell developed one. It’s the second biggest knock on Shaq, outside of his lack of wanting to stay in shape…

  • http://sajkflf.com Jukai

And I think TADone had the best nickname for Kwame, “Brick Hands Brown”

  • Justin

Jeremy, Kobe has also played in 60 more games than MJ. Kind of puts the assist totals in persepective doesn’t it?

  • Zabbah

Jukai, you’re forgettubg Shaq’s free throws.

  • Russ M

Funny you should mention Eric Montross because I was thinking about him while I was reading this piece. Alot of people don’t know that lack of confidence was what stopped him from having a long career. They say that on a daily basis his performance at practice was twice the level then anything that he ever displayed during an NBA game. Once the lights went on, the nerves took over.
This leads to a discussion that I’ve had countless times. Is the “nerves thing” a personality trait that can never be completely overcome, or can it be addressed, just as a player can improve his jumper or ball-handling skills?

  • Angie

We as fans sometimes exaggerate. But after hearing that story from Kobe, playing with Kwame was every bit as bad as it looked. And it was MISERABLE watching that guy night in and night out. Couldn’t catch, couldn’t finsh, always looked scared.

And btw, Street Cred Police, this was not snitching. Off the court business = snitching. On the court during the game business = fair game.

  • BostonBaller

Has anyone ever heard of Bill Wennigton, Brad Sellers, Dave Corzine, Granville Waiters? Jordan has…lol

  • BuzzerBeater

@Chuckaz lol can add this to the list, very harsh vid on Kwame

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com Off The Backboard

The hatred towards Kobe on this board is sickening, seriously. What did he say that was so wrong? That Kwame doesn’t like the ball in his hands, that he drops it out of fear? We knew that already – its common knowledge to those that actually watched that terrible squad. I love how you say things like “snitch” etc. He’s a effing basketball player, not a criminal. Also, J-Tay, at the peak of the Lakers run, Kobe averaged prime Lebron like number in the playoffs at the age of 22. Check his game logs for the 2001 playoffs – 27, 7, 6 is nothing to sneeze at. Stop hating for once, damn.

  • Jeremy

The funny ish about these Kobe haters is that They think the BS they be typing on here gon stop Kobe from Being a HOF

  • Jeremy

JTAYOLR is a Kid nevermind him

  • Robb

cant even spell taylor right smh.

  • #6marjons

even if this is true i still think lebron travelled

  • Leo

It is so funny how much people hate on Kobe. And all this does is increase his jersey sales! Kwame Brown is a good guy, but he stole millions. But he was a good defensive player for LA. Offensively, he played for the other team. And Actually he played very well for the Bobcats last year for the guy that drafted him initially. Unfortunately, college would have done him a great service. But anyway, KOBE still loves you!!

  • robb

I’m glad Kobe’s telling these stories so people know. Sure, he forces many shots, but you can’t blame him because sometimes players just didn’t want to score, someone had to do it. There are many things we don’t get to know, only those people who are actually on the floor during a game know this kind of things.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

If it’s basketball-related and he’d say it to a guy’s face, then I don’t see a problem with it. It’s not like he was calling him a “b*7ch” or a “p*55y” (but Phil did, haha).
Besides, he’s not saying anything we don’t know. It’s hard enough playing with a guy who has problems finishing easy buckets. When the guy’s too scared to try, that’s beyond frustrating.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

kobe didn’t have to tell this story….like this is stuff you don’t do to your teammates.. smh

  • duhwinning

was was smushs name in this article? he was a solid point guard and did what phil asked him to- give kobe the ball. And the reason for the kobe hate; is hes a polarizing figure either hate him or love him. I respect his game but I strongly dislike him. More of a fan of post play so I took sides with shaq in that whole deal and I think the way the lakers got pau was some shady ish. Hope Jerry West got a ring for that bulls@hit. Kwame is a bust but why air out old news. Please please stop comparing Kobe to MJ different eras different times, different game. Go buy a pair of Jordan X’s and read the bottom of them, Kobe hasnt done half that.

  • Rainman

its Funny, this team before they got Pau, was still good, they were 10 + games above .500 in 08, despite the scrubs.

years b4 they were horrible, that year? not really THAT bad, i was surprised at their record the whoel year to that point

  • Jeremy

If you really Watched The Games You Could See How Timid Kwame Is
all you got to do just look up stone hands kwame brown on youtube

  • golakeshow

Kwame brown should get a set of balls. What an asshole. F you kwame brown,go do it with shaq you bit@h

  • Kadavour

Dude relayed an anecdote about ON-COURT happenings. Where else could you get the insight that Kwame was nervous about catching the ball because he was afraid to go to the foul line? This IS NOT snitching. Smush, Kobe, Devean George, Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown. outside of Odom, which of these players could start on ANY squad from 2004 to today? Bench was Jumaine Jones, Chris Mihm (Mihm was nice, career cut short by injury), Luke Walton, and I can’t remember the rest. I can’t hate on this man even if i wanted to…Same goes for CLE LBJ, can’t hate on him. MIA LBJ i have some issues with though.

  • el_larsen

PFFFFFFFF this is not something to put on air .keep your mouth shut .kobe is a dickhead

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I never said Kwame was good. Dude was scared, and he was bad on offense. This was obvious to everybody that watched the game. His confidence has been shot for years on offense.
But, I firmly believe you don’t go around bad mouthing people like this. I think it’s lame, and it’s wack.
Kobe was easily the best player on that team and he had a wack team. I’ve extolled the virtues of what he did with that team many times. But, he still quit, and he still didn’t need to make these comments.
Just because something is true, doesn’t mean it needs to be said. It’s amazing to me how many people think that being honest is somehow protection against the rules of decency. It’s not.
Kobe took a shot a dude so far beneath him it just feels petty. Just like when Jordan does the same thing. You don’t have to take shots at bums, you’re a Hall of Famer. You just say “Things were tough, we needed more talent”, and then you move on.
    This was petty.

  • Marcel

Kwame brown was decent with the bobcats he’s gonna finally shine this year mark my words

  • Kevin Jackson

Listen up people some of you think what Kobe did was quote beneath him? Your kidding right?? Kobe is tame as a kitten compared to what MJ use to say to his teammates back during the run of the Bulls ala,Luc Longley,Stacey King,Bill Wennington, and Bill Cartwright? Jordan was ruthless and talk about Kobe being a Ball Hog? Some of you need to go back and watch some of the old Jordan days with the Bulls!!! MJ wouldn’t pass the rock to save his life why?? Because he didn’t trust his teammates! And when Kobe doesn’t see his teammates stepping up tell me why should he pass the rock? Kobe doesn’t trust his teammates at times and I don’t blame him and he shouldn’t trust them until they start delivering…..That’s what MJ did then once the rest of the Bulls started doing what they were supposed to do, Jordan passed the rock!!
Kwame was weak player and Kobe did exactly what he should have did once Kwame said he was afraid to get the ball!!1

  • Kevin Jackson

Remember when Jordan punched Steve Kerr in the face during a Bulls practice session? Stacey King and Bill Cartwright were Jordan’s whipping post back in the Bulls days thought yall’ knew!!!!
