Kobe Bryant Wishes Carmelo Anthony Was on His Team

Kobe Bryant recently opened up when talking to a UC Santa Barbara sports psychology class, dishing on the Kwame Brown disaster, living and playing in Michael Jordan’s shadow, and how much he’d enjoy playing alongside Carmelo Anthony. From Hoopsworld (via YouTube): “When asked if he wants to be remembered as the greatest player of all-time, Bryant said it’s impossible for a player to hold that title. ‘It’s not important to me,’ Bryant said. ‘It’s impossible. Even with [Michael] Jordan, some people say he’s not the best ever. Some say it’s Magic [Johnson] or Bill Russell. That’s not a goal worth shooting for. I just want to win as many as I can.’ As a follow up, he was asked specifically about surpassing Jordan’s achievements. Bryant said that he can’t compare to Jordan because of how much he’s learned from the legend over the years. ‘Of course, I want to win as many as I can so, by that alone, I’m chasing him,’ Bryant said. ‘As long as I’m playing, I want to continue to win more. But it’s never been a direct competition between him and me though because he’s helped me a lot. He hates when I say it, but I’ll say it anyway: I call him and he calls me right back every time. We talk about things, that’s the kind of relationship we have. I’ve learned so much from him so we can’t have a debate about who is better. You know what I mean? He’s directly influenced me.’ Another player that Jordan has directly influenced is Carmelo Anthony, who also came up during the question and answer session. Bryant said that the Lakers were never close to acquiring Anthony at last year’s trade deadline, but that he would have been thrilled with the move. In fact, Bryant was asked which current player he’d most like to team up with and he chose Anthony. ‘I would actually like to play with Melo,’ Bryant said. ‘Championships are won on the inside and I’m always thinking about winning the title. I would love to play with Melo because I would know that I have an inside presence. That’s really been the biggest strength with our Lakers team. We have a lot of guys who can play in the post, and that’s how you win championships. I can post, Lamar [Odom] can post, Ron [Artest] can post, Pau [Gasol] can post and Andrew [Bynum] can post. Teams are usually lucky if they have one guy that can control the block. But yeah, I would love to play with Melo.’”

I’ve thought for about the past 3 years that melo’s the best offensive threat in the league, just doesn’t always bring it 100%. He can score any way possible

  • JEr dawg

Real talk by Kobe. This link is going up for all the Kobe fans. My friends hate Melo but I always liked Melo. His ringing endorsement of Melo might sway their opinion.

Are we going to keep ignoring the fact that Melo has been past the first round just once in his career?

  • robb

Playing defense is one of the most important things for Kobe, he also loves to shoot the ball. In theory he would love to play with Melo, but if that became a reality, I’m pretty sure they’d have some trouble.

Wonder why he didn’t say lebron…lol

  • dan

@slams chuck barkley: coz bron got everything… except a post game or a 4th quarter lol

  • sophmore

@the truth/ more times than you right

  • Dru

“Are we going to keep ignoring the fact the” this is a TEAM sport? 1 player can’t win a chip by himself (ask LBJ). The best team Melo played on was in ’09 & they failed to help him get past LA. Kobe would not mention ‘Melo just for the hell of it. He knows how good that guy is.

  • Dru

    *fact that*

  • T-Money

    Kobe and Melo are boys.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Who said anything about winning chips? At least make it past the first round more than once in your 8yr career.

  • Chukaz

Kobe treat Melo like a lil bro so its normal he’d say that. He probably thinks the Lakers would’ve gotten him the way they got pau tho. Steve Blake and Theo Ratliff for Melo and Chancey…

  • RaZkOL

Defense is something Melo never learned. LaLa scores on Melo all the time! why would Kobe want that? doesn’t he already have a chucker in Artest?! Shannon Brown?!

  • RaZkOL

They at least can play SOME defense.

Jordan has always helped out Kobe. Even their first game together, Kobe was asking Jordan questions and Jordan was answering. Dunno if they got a buddy relationship or Jordan just likes giving advice like he’s a freaking guru.

  • stayweird38

Melooooooooo kobe should but re up with Phil Jackson in new York! Screw the lakers HAHAHA

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

lol Andrew Bynum has heard Kobe talk on a recorded cell phone, about how bad he sucks and now he has to hear about how excited Bryant would have been for Melo….meaning to get rid of Bynum….

  • http://slamonline.com wtf

lol kobe knows Melo is the truth. And Melo not getting out of the first round falls on his teamates as much as it does him. He always had the numbers, just didnt have the help. Not to mention the caliber of teams he faced in the west when the playoffs happened

  • Dru

^ Exactly… Also,’Melo not being able to play defense is a myth & anyone who watches basketball knows this. Consistent effort is his flaw (which needs to change). ‘Melo is arguably the best offensive & rebounding SF in the league.

Hope we can get rid of this silly soft cap so Kobe can come to NY and join Melo, Amar’e, CP3, and Phil Jackson. lol

Kobe n Mel wud make a great duo i must admit

  • Feez22

Melo is one of kobe’s best friends in the nba and on top of that was kobe’s best friend on team USA of course he would want to play with melo. It clearly wouldn’t work… kobe and melo are shotjackers. Kobe can’t play with another perimeter shot jacker as he couldn’t stand playing with an EFFICIENT low post scorer in shaq.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

i mean it’d be fun for ten minutes… but there’s no way it works unless they learn to pass to each other.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

and if kobe didn’t want to pass the ball to shaq… why in god’s name would he pass it to melo!?!? I mean this literally makes no sense.. if he thought it was bad when shaq came to training camp overweight… he’s gonna flip out on melo’s fat @ss

  • http://Slam.com Illwill

Since when is melo fat ? And how won’t that work this isnt rocket science folks it’s just ball kobe n melo could play on the same team and make it work, melo is the best offensive force in the NBA the. Then Come Kobe

Everything changes once you hit the court.
    Even friendships…

Kobe Bryant wishes Carmelo Anthony WERE on his team.

  • BostonBaller

Nice piece…..nice fireside chat and some info that some didn’t know. (The calls)

  • http://SlamOnline.com Mars

5 points for the low blow to LBJ from Kobe, like the subtle “post up” tag. PS…FOR ALL THOSE H8RS Kobe and Melo have great chemistry, remember TEAM USA…YEAH…THAT HAPPENED

  • indeedindeed

Feez22….its basketball. relax. it will make life easier for bryant with melo

Judging by his last failed play against the Bulls on opening nite , i’m not surprised.

  • jj122000

Kobe wants Melo because there’s no chance of getting him. Kobe only wants teammates that wont over shadow him. That’s why they got Gasol, Fisher, Artest & players that are still good defenders, rebounder’s, and are able to do the dirty work while kobe gets the praise. The players know they are past their prime but can still hit 3′s, and are still able to get kobe open shots and easy baskets so he gets points. The young rising star players wont be on kobes list for teammates, kobe wont share the lakers success ask shaq. The young star players have showed they wont be restrained to keep a lesser athlete in the spot light. They don’t want to carry kobe like Shaq, Gasol & others have.

“They don’t want to carry kobe like Shaq, Gasol & others have.” LOL!! That’s funny!!
