Polladaday: Shaq vs Wilt?

In our new SLAM Presents NBA BATTLES issue, we put these two up against each other in their respective primes. Who do you think should win?

Each in his prime, who would win a battle between Shaquille O'Neal and Wilt Chamberlain?

I don’t really think this is fair because i never actually seen wilt play. Just seen his numbers. And numbers can sometime lie. I voted shaq though purely because he was a beast.

  • pacman

Shaq, ryhmes ontop of rhymes bro! Lmao

  • Hector PR

Shaq over Will but no one over Hakeem

  • Bayxel Saez

Shaq by far because when he played theres no 3 second rule Shaq has 300pts in a game..

  • Bayxel Saez

Shaq by far because when he played theres no 3 second rule Shaq has 300pts in a game..

  • robb

@Hector PR agreed. Hakeem the best ever.

  • Jono

@Bayxel Agreed! Also think Shaq would destroy Bill Russell in his prime.

  • Morgan

@Bayxel – I dont think Shaq was ever fit enough to attempt 150 Field Goals but your right, noone could move him out of the lane if he didnt have to get out.

Respect your histoy, guys. Yeah, stats can lie but for Wilt, one season he averaged 50/26. Think those numbers are too skewed? At age 31 (when the league had started to catch up a bit), he put up 24/24/9. 9 assists from a dominant big guy. Yeah, I’ll take Wilt.

This is an OD question… I won’t even attempt to choose

  • Double J

I’m loving what Bayxel said… no 3 second rule… Shaq.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

OK, listen up. The 3-second rule was introduced to basketball in 1936 to prevent Leroy Edwards from dominating the NCAA game. Source: Wikipedia->Three Second Rule.

  • Timshel

Assuming contact is allowed like it is today, I think Shaq would win. Wilt was good in his time, but he wouldn’t have the strength or the weight to go up against Shaq in points or rebounds…. in my opinion.

Some of you need to get history lesson on Wilt, He was shaq before shaq …Standing at 7’1 320, he was no small order, plus he was the only center to lead the league in assist. the only 1 to do that while average 50. Learnt that by 2k12 by the way lol..

  • JD

oh my god guys have you had a look at wilts numbers? Averaged over 50 a season, scored 100 in a game, put up the most rebounds in one game in history, and as showtime says the only center to lead the league in assists

  • Jay

2 rings. Wilt couldn’t win in wilt’s time that much. Shaq played against Ewing,, Robinson, Hakeem etc.

  • LA Huey

Wilt played in a time when the game was played at a much faster place and inflated everyone’s numbers. Shaq may have played in the era of centers but didn’t win any chips until he was among the last of a dying breed. Very few of us has seen Wilt’s play in anything beyond highlights. This debate can really only be based on numbers. Without seeing actual game film, how can we know what weaknesses Shaq would exploit or what Wilt could do to Shaq?

  • http://Slamonline.coM nbk

Wilt was a 7’1 LeBron as an athlete. Is this really a question? Shaq would win a fight. Wilt was easily the better athlete/basketball player. So if you mean battle as in fight then Shaq, but as in basketball it’s Wilt. Google Wilt Chamberlain stories if you don’t know about him.

  • Conor O.

Do some of you not realize that Chamberlain was actually larger than O’Neal, just as strong, and much more athletic? Either could play in the other’s era and would dominate. Let’s put it this way: Chamberlain is Shaq’s individual potential realized while O’Neal is the ghost of what Wilt could have been, accolade-wise, had he bought into a less selfish playing style. Wilt for sure, one-on-one.

Word nbk. Some cats here think they know history. It’s sad, really.

  • http://Slamonline.coM nbk

Pretty sad really. Wilt jumped 6’6″ in the high jump. Shaq dunk a giant donut in 6’6″ of milk. Kazaam

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Hahaha comment of the week nbk. Let’s not take away from Shaq though, he was awesome in his prime. But 24/24/9 is amazing. 50/26 while playing 48.5 minutes a game is inhuman.

  • http://Slamonline.coM nbk

Wilt is top 5 all-time, Shaq is top 10. Jordan – Russel – KAJ – Wilt – Magic. And then Bird, Oscar, Shaq, Hakeem, Duncan, Moses, Bryant, West in close to that order off the top of my head. To me the difference between Shaq and Wilt is pretty clear.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Wilt wins by a comfortable margin. next.

  • theedit

Shaq by a mile. It’s not even close.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Cosign both nbk and JTaylor. theedit: You sir, also probably believe Kobe is better than Jordan.

  • Niyagirlfresh

Wilt, easy can’t believe he’s losin in the polls.

  • JD

wilt had to go up against Bill Russell, the greatest defensive player in history, as as bob petit(i think) Walt Bellamy, Nate Thurmond,Willis Reed, there probably more i cant think of off the top of my head

  • Yesse

No disrespect to Wilt being one of the greatest all time. I’m going with Shaq. I personally think, that if Shaq would have played back when Wilt played he would have done better than him. Only huge contest i remember Wilt going against was Bill Russell.

  • add

only reason shaq is winnin is people from this generation never got to see him play

  • joe

kids is voting for this bull crap ,only people that should vote here are the ones that saw both wilt wins hands down

  • nido
