Report: Celtics Looking to Trade Rajon Rondo For Chris Paul

It’s trade rumor season, ladies and gentlemen. And according to Sports Illustrated, the Celtics are embracing the spirit wholeheartedly, reportedly looking to move their star point guard in a deal that’d net them a separate, equally (or even more) coveted star point guard: “According to numerous sources with knowledge of the situation, Boston general manager Danny Ainge is highly motivated to land an even better point guard than the one who led the Celtics to a championship in 2008 and an average of 58.5 wins in the last four seasons: New Orleans’ Chris Paul. Ainge, the sources say, has recently discussed trading Rondo in a deal that nets Paul, but the Hornets don’t appear interested in a two-team deal in which Rondo — who has four years worth approximately $46 million left on his contract — and Paul would switch places. So Ainge has been on the prowl for a third team that could provide the sort of young pieces Hornets general manager Dell Demps would covet as part of his possible rebuilding plan. The more pressing question, of course, is whether Paul, who can become a free agent after this season, would consider signing an extension with Boston. While ESPN reports that New York tops Paul’s wish list because of the chance to form a Big Three with Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, Paul would have a chance to take the Big Four — joining Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen — to a new level in Beantown. Without Paul agreeing to an extension, however, the sources say Ainge will not do the deal.”

This trade works for everyone except Chris Paul. It gets the Hornets an All-Star PG (with some offensive limitations) who is locked up long-term. It gets the Celtics an All-Star PG who may not be quite as good as Rondo on D or on the boards, but is light years ahead on offense. KG, Ray and PP will get the same easy looks that Rondo gets them, but Paul can finish in ways that Rondo can’t. The only downside is Paul looking at the C’s roster and thinking “1 season to get chemistry together then we can contend…oh wait….those guys are all old and I’m going to be on another stagnant and rebuilding team. I wonder what Amare and Melo are up to…”

Funny thing (obviously CP3 is a better player), but this trade isnt a horribly one-sided trade like the L.A rumoured ones. Even if the Celtics aquire Rajon, they still wont be champs (they will be contenders), but would most likely lose to the 3 musketqueers in the eastern conference semis. If L.A pulls off any trade and get CP3 or D12, ITS A RAP!!!!

Why would CP agree to a trade that places him with 3 aging vets on their last leg over playing with 2 in-their-prime players.

rumors are the new trend….. Next post ………. Knicks looking to trade for Dwight Howard

  • Justin

Rondo for Paul, then Rondo to LA looking for revenge!!

  • EtheKnickFan

Kevin Durant to LA for Fisher. Look at all these rumors……

  • OTB

@JT – I don’t think he has a choice, unless he has a no trade clause. Management knows he’s likely to leave, and they’re going to get a ton of offers from other teams, it’s better to cash it in then to end up in a Melo-like situation.

  • paul

    Paul isn’t better than Rondo.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Ainge can not pull the trigger until CP agrees to an extension because he will be a FA next season.

  • http://thetroyblog,com Teddy-the-Bear

As much as I’d like to see Paul in a Knick uniform, the Celtics with Chris Paul would be f*cking awesome.

  • http://thetroyblog,com Teddy-the-Bear

@ JTaylor: For an immediate ring.

  • robb

lol CP3 would never go there.

  • LDUB20

@paul-Paul isnt better than Rondo? What planet of BBAll have you been watching for the past few years? Yeah Rondo got the ring, but would he have it if he was on the Hornets w/ the big 3 behing him? I highly doubt it. Rondo is a defense set up artist. Without Ray Ray, Pierce or Garnett hitting shots..there would be no ring for Rondo in Beantown. What exactly makes Rondo better than Paul I would love to know. ZOGS had a good point by saying Rondo is a better rebounder (maybe bcuz Rondo gets alot of the chase down rebounds in the corner that allow him to push the break), and on ball defender (ill give him that one). Any other catergory goes to CP3. Rondo cant control a game like Paul & cant make a mid range jumper to save the planet from the 2nd coming. All in all its a bad trade for CP3

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

OTB, Jtaylor means for after this year. Boston wouldn’t do the deal unless chris paul signed an extension and there is really no reason for him to sign that extension.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

It’s really silly to put Rondo in CP3′s league by saying they’re equally coveted. (The “or even more” in brackets does little to mitigate the silliness)

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

that would be sick, Trader Danny would be just the guy to make this trade too

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

co-sign tealish. I questioned that sentence as I was reading aswell

  • dma

i think it’s safe to say every team in the league except chicago is interested in chris paul. good job SI. and Slam for even putting this up.

  • bt

@dma even chcicago would be stupid not to trade rose for cp3. A score first point guard who takes 30 shots a game ans always has to be the #1 scoring option(the type of point guard who has NEVER won a championship in the history of the NBA) or a point guard who is a more efficient scorer, makes his teammates much better, is a better defender and only takes over games scoring wise when needed, not for 4 quarters every game.

  • shawnkemp4prez

CP3 didn’t do a wedding toast proclaiming his desire to play with the ghosts of Ray, Paul and KG. He has every intention of going to NY, and they will find a way to make it happen. Creep on someone else, Danny Ainge

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Or the Clippers….if they dont get Dwight. Either way them getting one of them is looking more and more likely by the day. Eat your heart out Laker fans.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

team facilities are being opened to players tomorrow. Coaches/Gm’s are also allowed to start talking to agents/publically discuss potential free agent signings. get ready for a whirlwind of rumors..

  • roy

@bt you must be smoking if you think anyone would trade Rose for Cp3 at this present time. He’s younger than Cp3, healthier and is coming off an MVP season. I like Paul but lets not act like he has a greater chance at winning a title than Rose

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

also there are apparently 5 games on christmas now, I hope they don’t change the games they already have though. Im really looking forward to dallas/miami.

  • mgballer

theyd get Dwight with only pierce and hopefully CP under contract in 2012 with plenty of cap room

so good to be hearing trade rumours again.

  • BBaller

Love the rumors… This one is plausible but i think the Celtics may opt to stick with their core for one last season and seriously consider signing AI to make the jump shot that Rondo so desperately lacks. Rondo knows the system and being a shortened season i don’t think the ageing vets would want to gamble on any rebuilding phase, even though CP3 would pick it up quickly.Out of interest when will the new trade deadline be set?

  • Kadavour

    @bt: see Thomas, Isaiah

  • BBaller

What big Man are my Spurs going to sign to help Duncan this season? Splitter was really disappointing and McDyess as far as i know has retired. Blair is okay, but Memphis ripped us apart with Zach and Gasol.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I’d really rather they take a run at Dwight than Paul. Rondo is my favourite player and the Celtics are my team, would be tough to see them compete against each other.

  • Vince

Well there is news that they offered Green and Rondo to OKC for Westbrook and Perkins, Ainge really needs to know what he wants to do, imo Paul won’t go to Boston, its either New York or LA.

  • NJ4Life

Nets getting ready to make huge offer for Dwight. ESPN has more.

  • laker4life

is that title right?? LMAO…..chris paul owns rajon rondo in everything…lol…chris paul…goes to olympic team..and everything..rondo gets pulled out from 2010 fiba bball. Plus i wanna see what rondo would do without the big 3. LOL..what is the celtics thinking..lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

@BBaller, I read from espn.com that trade deadline wasn’t set in stone but was expected to be sometime in march.
@NJ4Life Just checked it out, Lopez + 2 future first rounders + taking hedo’s contract, and the nets would throw in a couple smaller scale players. I actually like that deal, I think its good for both teams

  • Lan

Don’t go green CP! starters are aging. better prospects with the Knicks!

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys6VpgI9BHA datkid

man knicks… celtics… how’s my boy cp3 gonna win a ring if he ends up w/ these guys? lol

  • breezy

Everybody always judges pg’s on stats and not their situation. I mean Cmon Paul has had to be the primary weapon with the decent talent around him….. Rondo would easily be a 18 and 10 to go along with 6 boards and 2 steals if he was the number one focus. Rondo has never needed to be that guy for long of a period. All people do is doubt the Rondo show. Remember when people said he wouldn’t be able to lead the celts to chip….he did, and if your questioning is production value……..look at the bulls- celtics series when kg was hurt…….nuff said

  • AMPduppp

I like this trade for one reason and one reason only. Rondo’s main role on the Celts these past few years has been to manage the Big Three and evenly distribute the ball to make sure Garnett, Allen, and Pierce get equal scoring opportunities. Both Garnett and Allen are starting to wind down in their careers, leaving most of the scoring to Pierce. The C’s would def benefit from having another scorer on their squad, especially one that can distribute just as good, if not better, than Rondo

  • Bt

@kadavour – isiah only dominated the scoring when needed, unlike rose he looked to set up his teamates first. I’d put serious money on rose not win a championship in his prime

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

I read a rumor that the Cs are trying to get Tyson Chandler (Chris Paul’s buddy) so Paul will stay and sign an extension with Boston.

  • BlackStar

@ Bt – Whoa brethren … I wouldn’t go that far and doubt Rose to that degree. That young man believes in working hard and last year proved it. They’re just missing a decent shooting guard. Once they get that, and provided Rose stays humble, focused and continues to improve, they will get a chip. I see them winning it all within 3 years.

  • KBJ

ill keep rondo anyday, they just need to find a center, rondo defends one on one tuffer the paul, hes more athletic, longer reach bigger hands, and better vision the passing is a wash.

  • KoBynum716

Rondo is one of the most overrated players EVER to play in the NBA, so to get Paul would be a big upgrade. That said, Paul’s not stupid, the big 3 in Boston has maybe 2 more years left before one of them retires or starts getting hampered by injuries (KG got a head start, so who knows). He won’t sign an extension with that washed up team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chubachuchi

If this does happen (which I’m sure it won’t) I wonder how Rondo will perform without a strong cast.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Why would the Hornets trade Paul for Rondo straight up? That’s the type of deal that only works on 2K12

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Saying that Paul had decent talent is ludicrous. And if you believe that the Big Three are preventing Rondo from averaging 18 and 10, then you haven’t been watching him play.
His inability to shoot consistently, or hit free throws is why he averages the stats he averages.
