Report: Nets to Offer Brook Lopez, Draft Picks for Dwight Howard

New Jersey will reportedly put together a monster offer for Dwight Howard before he becomes a free agent next summer. ESPN has the latest rumor: “The New Jersey Nets are prepared to offer a trade package featuring Brook Lopez and two future first-round picks to acquire Dwight Howard before the Orlando Magic center becomes a free agent in July 2012, according to sources close to the situation. Sources told ESPN.com this week that, to sweeten the proposal, New Jersey would likewise offer to take back the contract of Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu, who has three seasons left on his contract worth just under $35 million. Absorbing Turkoglu’s remaining salary would become financially feasible for the Nets after the expected release of swingman Travis Outlaw through the amnesty clause that will be included in the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement and by including another smaller contract or two in the deal. Although teams won’t be cleared to start making official roster moves until Dec. 9 at the earliest following the 149-day lockout, sources say team executives have been discussing potential trades for some time in anticipation of a condensed and hurried free agency period before the season’s scheduled Dec. 25 start. No trade deadline for the 2011-12 season has been set in stone yet by the league office, but many team executives believe it will fall in March.”

The Magic should take it. If they don’t, and wait ’till next summer, they will get nothing for Dwight, as he will be a Free Agent, and he won’t be going back to Orlando at all!

This would be huge for NJ. The new arena is for 2012/2013, right? Just in time to fill the seats.

  • AD

aww man ive been waiting for the nets to return to the days when they had jkidd, kittles, kmart, etc… If this happens…….. the nets are righ up there with the best in the east…. But we have to see

  • BlackStar

This would be heaven on earth if the Nets can have Williams AND Howard. The big Russian wasn’t lying when he said the Nets would win a ring within 5 years of him purchasing the team. Goes to show you what a focused person can accomplish …. Too bad more owners don’t make moves like Mikhail Prokhorov.

  • LA Huey

Pretty good offer. And if CP3 makes it to NYC, the balance of power is definitely in the East and it’d set for amazing series starting in the 2nd round for years to come MIA, CHI, NYK, BRK.

  • Jono

Look like war in the East, also looks like KD will have a pretty easy walk down the West once Kobe is done.

  • AD

@blackstar chill its proposed.. nothing happened yet!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Clippers offer is better. – Kaman, EGordon, Aminu (Or Jordan, Bledsoe, Gomes), + (Minnesota’s?) 1st Round Pick. Plus they will supposedly add in everyone short of Blake Griffin to get Dwight. That’s according to Chris Broussard.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Oh and the Magic would be taking back 2 to 3 potential All-Stars from the Clippers (Gordon, Jordan/Kaman, Bledsoe) and only (1) from New Jersey (Brook Lopez) and he doesn’t rebound for his position. Does it sound smart to go from a 13RPG Center to a 6RPG Center and what won’t be a lottery pick because the team your trading too is going to make the playoffs with Dwight? Or to go after a former All Star, 20PPG 24 Year Old SG, 2 Prospects and a guaranteed Lottery Pick.

  • JEr dawg

Headline Brook Lopez for Dwight Howard is as one sided of a headline as Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol. Lmao.
Clipper deal is good, but Lakers got the highly overrated Andrew Bynum, but more productive than Lopez, to trade for. Dwight is a fool if his agent doesn’t push for Lakers. But if Clippers can get Howard….watch your ass NBA frontline. Blake and Dwight will outmuscle and clean the glass unlike anything anyone has ever seen. Lots of posters. Feelings really going to be hurt.

  • AD

@nbk do you think the clippers need dwight tho?……….. gordon and blake are deadly…. they should go after a point guard….. plus blake and dwight are like the same player

  • http://averysmith.org Avery Smith

BKN making a splash. Hello Brooklyn, we always taking it!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

They aren’t like the same player, at all. Blake Griffin is an offensive player, he can score from anywhere inside the 3pt line. Has a turn-a-round jumper, basically all the offensive tools. Dwight is the exact opposite. And a Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard front Court? That’s terrifying, for the next decade. If they keep Bledsoe from the trade, than they have a PG of the future, and Mo Williams for the present. Either way though, they are in Los Angeles, and will have a mid-level exception after this season (and Mo Williams) to sign a decent PG. Basically if you can get Dwight, you get Dwight.

  • D12FSU

As a magic fan, I prefer the offer from the clippers. The only good thing about that nets offer is that they’d be taking back Hedo (those first round picks are worthless if they’re in the mid 20s). Then we’d amnesty Gilbert and Orlando would be wayyyy under the cap for 2012. But the deal I want to see get done of Dwight is going to leave..I want to see Orlando try to get Russell Westbrook from OKC. There’s a potential franchise player right there. Eric Gordon is good, but I don’t think he’s a franchise guy.

  • robb

    not gonna happen

  • BlackStar

@ AD – True … It’s proposed, but at least the Nets management is doing something to bring a title to NJ/BRK. Look at what Cleveland did while Bron was there. They might not have had many great pieces to offer other teams, but they could have done something to bring better talent to help Bron get a chip while he was there. An old Shaq and Jamison doesn’t cut it.

But on the real, how many other teams are trying to position themselves to really win it all in this league? Definitely less than half my good man …

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

This trade proposal would be trash if they weren’t also offering to take Hedo’s salary back, that might just do it.
If the Magic can amnesty Arenas’ contract AND shed Hedo’s contract, they’ll get a head start in rebuilding.
As for the Clippers, the scariest thing about a Howard/Griffin tandem would be who’s coaching them tho.

  • jarrett

DONT TAKE IT. Forcing Clippers to trade Gordon + Jordan + 2 First Rounders for Hedo and Dwight would be the best deal for Orlando and would work for everybody.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Co-sign Enigmatic. You can’t not have Vinny Del Negra coaching such a talented tandem. Also, as long as Donald KKK Sterlin is running things, potential FA might shun the clipps.

  • NJ4Life

Nets deal saves the Magic almost $70mil. Puts them $27mil under cap. Gives them a proven, young, durable 20ppg center, in addition to other young players and picks. But the decision must be made before the 9th, the Nets will spend on FAs to get Nene/Chandler, and won’t be able to absorb Hedo after that.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Nets are not getting Nene or Chandler. Plus it would be stupid for them to add either of those guys anyway, they will have either Lopez or Howard, under 25 year old centers, who don’t need anyone taking away their minutes.

  • All Day

The Nets won’t be getting D12 either. The Nets will want assurances that D12 will sign a contract extension with them, which is something D12 is not going to do.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Why wouldn’t he? If he’s there, with Deron Williams, there isn’t a much better start to a championship puzzle. And they will be in Brooklyn next year. I think if New Jersey found a way to add Howard, they will be able to get him to sign an extension. The problem is, there is another team in a big market, with just as much upside (probably more) who can offer more in a trade.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys6VpgI9BHA datkid

a howard griffen frontline would be amazing but I was really looking forward to blake and E.G. becoming the next great guard big man combo… like wade/bron westbrook/durant but still that sounds amazing tho.

  • shutupallenp

howard and blake would be sick, running baseline screens and the out of bounds plays would be so hard to manage, (think what dwight did on the spurs) but the need for a primary ballhandler would arise neither of these two have a serious threat of a post game, they Clippers would have to push the ball to use their athleticism, Dwight goin to The nets is a good look, deron could set him up , just like Kidd use to do with Martin.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

In his rookie year Brook Lopez was looking like the future-best center of the Eastern Conference. wtf was up with last season?

  • AD

@nbk mayb i dnt watch blake griffin enough but…. but with blake and howard on the same team… im running a zone all day and making mo williams, and rand foye, beat me…. @ shutupallen…… dwill and dwight could be a kidd to martin 2.0 potentially

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

No team would dare running a zone vs a BGriff/DHow lineup because they would get massacred on the boards.

  • Slalm

Who are the Nets (and their fans on this blog) kidding? I have a proposal. I wil trade two McRib sandwiches for Howard. Your move, Orlando.

  • sam

I think it would work out for both teams. Lopez isn’t that much younger than Howard, but he’s still younger. He goes out there and puts up numbers close to what Howard does, and that will be the best Orlando will get before 2012. New Jersey has a few other good players to build around besides Williams (Morrow, Outlaw, Wright) that could help them out. I think New Jersey needs to get another good player in the starting lineup, maybe Prince? He is a free agent and he could help the Nets a lot, that is if they get Howard.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

You can try an play a zone against those two. But taking a man off of each of The two highest jumping bigs in the league and guarding the rim is a quick way to get repeatedly dunked on. And zone’s, specifically the 2-3 and 3-2 are prone to giving up a ton of offensive rebounds to aggressive teams. And I’m assuming there won’t be a much more aggressive squad than them. The only way I see to repeatedly beat them is to pressure them into turnovers. And/Or to get their bigs in foul trouble.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Im offering the rest of Becks 22oz. and my boys purple button down for Dwight Howard to play on our Special Olympics team

  • bt

considering the lack of range on dwight and blake’s jumpshots, it would get very crowded around the basket for both of them

  • AD

@nbk right they would get lots of rebounds against most of the mediocore teams … but in the playoffs against teams who rebound and have good big men.. would they be able to do win a championship like that……. Lakers, thunder spurs grizz… all play good d and rebound….. i would think dwight wants to win a ring but i just think him and dwill can be a great tandum…… but hey im just a nets fan and dhoward likes the warm weather

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzpOkVb5KN8 nbk

The point I was making is that a zone defense isn’t the answer. I’m not saying the Clippers are going to win a title if it happens, at any point. I am saying that a team with DH and BG will be a very tough out in the playoffs, but not that they would win a title. At least not with who is on the Clippers now.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Damn, that’s a decent deal. I mean, they are still getting gouged, but at least they get to shed Hedo’s contract. If they amnesty Arenas, they would be out of salary cap purgatory.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The Clippers offer is good too. But, would they be able to shed a bad contract. That has to be a big consideration at this point.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If the Clippers include Mo Williams they can take back Hedo Turkoglu.
