Shaquille O’Neal Threatened to Punch Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis in the Face

Another day, another hilarious excerpt from Shaq’s new book. I expect this to continue until the tome comes out, and quite possibly even after that. Which is fine by me. The Boston Globe has the parts about O’Neal’s adventures as a Celtic: “On the West Coast swing in January, Shaq wanted to get off against the Lakers, but he said even though he was getting good position under the basket, Glen Davis wouldn’t pass him the ball. ‘Big Baby’ Davis kept looking me off and taking it himself. Doc is shouting at him to go inside, but he won’t. So Doc calls timeout and draws up a play for me. I go out there, and I back Andrew Bynum way under the rim. I’m loose, I’m ready. I’ve got Bynum under the basket and again, Baby won’t give me the ball. So I go up to him and say, ‘If you ever miss me again I’m going to punch you in the face.’ I was hot. Two nights later we’re playing in Sacramento and here we go again. I take three shots the entire game and again I’ve got my man isolated underneath the basket, and Baby ignores me and takes a jump shot. So the next time we’re in the huddle I let Baby have it. I tell him, ‘Pass the [expletive] ball inside.’ He [comes] back at me a little bit and now I’m really heated. All hell is breaking loose. We’re going back and forth. Doc is standing there and he’s not saying a word. The message is pretty clear: work this out yourselves. I tell Baby, ‘You’re a selfish player. Everyone on this team knows it.’ Hey, all the fans knew it. He takes shots when he shouldn’t’”

i hate cry baby davis,…he shouldn’t be in the nba in the first place. i hope he quits tomorrow!

  • KBJ

he does take some stupid shots sometime, but he is a beast when he gets serious.

  • DieselMechanic

I love Doc. He was thinking Ooh I hope I see a heavyweight fight tonight.

  • T-Money

man… shaq is starting to look bad. the thing is, he never acknowledges when he messes up so that takes credibility away from his complaints.

  • Mburb321

Shaq is a lazy ass loafer, I wouldn’t pass him the ball either. His only job was to defend the paint and slow down dwight in case they met in the playoffs, not to “go off”.

Looking forward to reading the Big Diesel’s book.

  • tomtom

It’s ok we will get to read big baby’s version when he brings out his tell-all book. Which i imagine will be written in crayon.

  • kobesBESTfriend

i bet he loved all the passes he got in cleveland too…i dont think mike brown ran 1 play 4 him…just goes 2 show u that he shoulda stayed in LA with Kobe…sure mamba doesnt pass much but if shaq had position he always fed him…a lackluster end 2 what could of been a dominant career!!!

  • EtheKnickFan

So now we know what KG said to Big Baby that made him cry….KG -”Say somethin’ else n ima get Shaq on that ass” BB – “ohh laaaaaawwd! wahhhh”

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Big Baby?
    Really Shaq?
Wow. That’s low for Shaq, just like it was low for Kobe.
Lebron, Kobe and Mike Brown are fair game, but takings shots at role players is shady. But, Shaq has been shady for while.

  • MikeC.

    Glen Davis.

  • DieselMechanic

    lol @ tomtom

  • Siraj

Shaq has issue with anyone who gets more attention than him. I don’t see why the beef with Dwight Howard? He forgot to mention D. Howard is only 6’9 and plays like a 7’2 center. If Shaq would have just kept up in shape, he had a real chance to win 8 or 9 rings in LA or Miami. He needs to look in the mirror. You hear about players need people telling them how great they are, i think Shaq is a perfect example. This guy is low and seeks attention, everywhere he has gone he has had problems with team mates(Penny Hardaway, Kobe, Lebron, Big Baby, etc), he also has problems with retired players like Kareem,Bill Russell, etc… He also has problem with every coach he plays with.

So far, nothing of any substance out of Shaq’s book. Like, a skirmish between teammates is news to anyone. Why anyone would buy his book is beyond me.

  • cbanta

Absolutely love how much s**t Shaq is giving out in his book. Kobe deserved it and Big Baby did to. Show some elders and veterans some needed respect.

  • Yesse

I know the feeling myself when i’m in a game and i know i can take my guy down low, but they wont pass it.

  • LA Huey

I can’t wait to see the next excerpt which is sure to come from the Phoenix papers. I’m sure he’ll go after some ball boy or trainer on the medical staff.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Baby takes way more jumpers than he should. More people need to get on him about that.

  • Mburb321

Shaq acting like a lil b*tch. We took your side and hated on kobe for breaking man code but then you had to go and air out Dwade and his relations and now you cant keep other players name out your mouth just shaddup and let it go………

  • anthony y

Don’t tell big baby anything..just trade his ass! I always said we shouldn’t have drafted his fat ass! He’s overweight, slow, has good hands, but can’t shoot, ok rebounder at best. Sign Jeff green and get whatever we can for baby.. shaq is an example of a player whos ego kept him around to long. He was so hell-bent on getting more rings than kobe he stayed a few years longer than Ur should have.. anyone remember pat ewing in Seattle?

  • Robb

wow i didnt know most of you read the book already…oh youre basing a 500+ page book on a few excerpts? how incredibly intelligent you are.

  • Mp7three

Of course Shaq is leaving out that when he was with the Celtics that he was done and had no lift at all. So getting the ball down low meant he could only throw up some ugly semi-hook/layup and NOT be the old Shaq and power dunk over anyone. So Im guessing its gonna be a book full of fingerpointing and Shaq not acknowledging his faults at all.

  • Hambone

I hate people that say “I’m going to punch you” just effing punch him or say nothing

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Robb, you REALLY expect the rest of the book to be much different from the excerpts?
    C’mon now.
Shaq has “written” books before. It’s always the same sh*t – “I’m the greatest player ever, and this guy sucks and that guy sucks and that guy sucks and I’ma tell you why”….

  • phil-ingthewindycity2012

@siraq dwight is 6 11′. and well, what do you expect from a “tell all book”. nobody is going to buy a book about how much he loves his team mates. these excepts about his beef have 100% sold me on the book. im buying it for sure. hate it or love it, the world loves beef (not saying thats a good thing). which is why in news coverage on something say, war vs humanitarian efforts, war will get the coverage 99 times out of 100.

oh and, somebody get d.rose a shooting guard that can make his own damn shot

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Baby really does do some stupid things on the court.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Shaq is staying relevant. This is three days in a row a lot of the country will be talking about Shaq and his book. — And the sad thing is, these excerpts are just confirming things that we already know. About shaq as well as all the people he included in his book. And Shaq (although he doesn’t care) is going to look the worst after it’s all said and done.

  • MikeC.

I’m buying this book. I enjoy unintentional comedy.

  • Heals

If only Diesel, if only. I bet he’s not only one. C’mon Big Man save some juicy tidbits for those of us who plan to read it. Please don’t pick apart the book because of what it’s not; we all know what to expect. There won’t be anything groundbreaking, but it will give that “fly-on-the-wall” feeling that many fans have always wanted to have (albeit a fly with Shaq tinted shades, but still). Siraq, it’s all about Dwight swiping the “Superman” label. Shaq’s view is it’s my nickname, I’ve done more, I’ve won more, I was bigger off the court, so who are you? I did everything you’re trying to do before you plus some so how can you be Superman…

  • robb

Shaq should have punched him several times. I hate Davis with a passion.

Let him went and get some more cash, hes . I will buy the book fosho.

  • O

Shaq stay threatening nuccas. Quit ya yappin and get the slappin’.

  • Mburb321

@Heals Shaq has had about 50 nick names over his career, if dwight wants to use superman he still has 49 others to fall back on. Its sad to see a top 10 player whose accomplished so much act so petty.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Shaq do sound like a bitter old man when it comes to the Dwight thing, though.
Honestly, to my knowledge, Dwight’s never said or done anything to really deserve Shaq sh*tting on him the way he does.
    Over a “superman” nickname?
Like he invented it? He better get in line behind the thousands and thousands of people throughout history who have been nicknamed superman for one reason or another too, lol

  • MLK4Life

Shaq is turning out to be more arrogant and selfish than Kobe. Kobe never came close to being thrown out of practice or challenged a coach like Pat Riley. Honestly, who did Shaq think he was to tell Pat Riley that he couldn’t throw a player out of practice? I hope these stories keep coming out because Kobe is looking more and more like the good guy between these two regardless of how playful Shaq is. We’re seeing what Shaq is going to be like now that he won’t be in the league.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Shaq is trippin on some old Brett Favre stuff right now though….

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I wonder who decides on which excerpts to come out. Clearly comments about Kobe or LeBron make sense to help promote/sell his book, but who really cares about Big Baby? If this is a tell all book I wonder if he’ll say anything about his family issues, cheating and/or eating and his weight problems. I actually like to get insight from a players perspective about how teammates get along (or not), so I’ll read this book. I also look forward to seeing if any players ‘strike back’ at him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max
  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Before coming to MIA, Shaq won 3 straight Final MVPs so I think he has every right to challenge Pat. Also, DHow has basically copied Shaq’s persona right down to the tee and at times fails to give Shaq his just due, so I can see why Shaq threw a couple jabs at him in the book.

  • MLK4Life

Pat Riley is a coach, Shaq was a player. Pat was winning championships before Shaq even got into the league. No player should tell a coach to make him leave practice or try to usurp his authority by telling him he can’t dismiss another player from practice. Period. I don’t care how many Finals MVPs you have. Shaq’s ego is huge, we’re seeing that clearly now.

  • MLK4Life

Shaq is looking like a bigger baby than Glen Davis has since KG made him cry in the huddle years ago. He should do his job on TNT and be quiet otherwise.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

When it’s all said and done, Shaq and Pat won a ring together. That’s all that matters.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Shaq was -6 years old when Pat Riley was getting his “on the losing end of the game that became the movie Glory Road” on.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

So Shaq should keep his mouth shut and not criticize former teammates but when Kobe criticizes former teammates, his fanboys defend him to the death.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Just because Riley has been around basketball since the 60s, Shaq should bow down to his every whim? Everyone knows that Riley is one of the most demanding and difficult coach to play for and that Shaq’s one of the most laid-back and easy-going superstars of all-time, so of course there’s going to be some friction between both guys. Every great player had issues with his coaches at one time or another in his career, so let’s not act like Shaq’s the first cat to challenge his coach.

  • MLK4Life

No, Shaq should respect the authority of his coach. It’s simple.

  • MLK4Life

If Kobe was the one telling his coach to make him leave practice if he wants him gone and telling players who didn’t give him the ball that he was going to inflict bodily harm on him, he’d be criticized to no end.

  • LA Huey

I don’t see it as wrong for Shaq to have told Riley they shouldn’t kick a player out of practice. Riley should’ve just been like, “OK. So we’re a team and accountable for each other? That’s fine. As a team, y’all can run an extra half hour of suicides at the end of practice.”

  • Mburb321

Bottom line is he seems to try to bully people into getting what he wants. People should listen to him out of respect, not because hes 7’0 320 pounds. Thats why him and Pat and Kobe feud because yeah they’ll get their ass beat but theyre not intimidated by him.

  • Name

Shaq has always thrown his teammates under the bus. This is nothing new.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@JTaylor – nah, I was just piggybacking off what MLK4Life said.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Everyone does. MJ did it, Kobe did it, Bird did it, and now it’s Shaq’s turn to talk bad about former teammates. He’s trying to sell a freaking book not write a love letter.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Has anyone read any of Charles Barkley’s or Shaq’s books. While both of them are great in conversation, they write horrible books. I feel for the editor who has to clean it up and make it halfway decent.

  • Mburb321

Shaq didnt write a damn thing. Jackie Macmullan probably sat down with Shaq for like a week recording all his ego boosting stories and then wrote the book.

@Jay Taylor why exactly is he even putting out a book? He clearly doesnt need the money. We already knew most of this stuff anyway and hes only making himself look bad, so whats the point? I mean is he really that starved for attention…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The nerve of this guy. How dare Shaq write a book talking about wanting to kill Kobe after he talked ish about him to the media? How dare Shaq write a book talking about how he wanted to punch Glen Davis in the face after he refused to pass him the ball? How dare Shaq write a book talking about how him and PRiley almost went to blows after threatening to kick him out of practice? Who does this Shaq fella think he is? A first-ballot Hall of Famer?

Shaq is trying to stay relevant. Thats it folks and TNT helped him. BOOK IT!!

  • yes.we.did.

Glen Davis needs to learn him some respect. I know Shaq can be…difficult to have around, but you don’t work your way up to #6 on the NBA’s all time scoring list by Tweeting. Point being, if one of the most dominant players in NBA history is in good scoring position, you get him the ball. especially if you’re some gimmick a$$ power forward who made himself KG’s yes man just to stay on the team.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Shaq probably thinks he will have a statue outside of Staples Center.
Shaq probably thinks he will get his jersey retired in Orlando.
Shaq probably thinks he is a top 5 center. Hakeem,Bill,Jabber,Chamberlin,Duncan
Shaq probably thinks he is Kobe, Wade and Lebron friends.
Shaq probably thinks this book will help his broadcasting career.
Shaq probably thinks he knows basketball better than Cwebb.
Shaq probably thinks he will appear on basketball wives.
Shaq probably thinks he is very very funny.
Shaq probably thinks he will be a sheriff with real cases one day.
Shaq probably thinks he is relevant with NBA players.
Shaq probably thinks the new Miami Heat needed him.
Shaq probably thinks Kobe owes his career to him.
Shaq probably thinks he can own a team or be a Head Coach.
Shaq probably thinks he didn’t overachieve in his career. One MVP, 3 rings and 1 dallas gave to him.
Shaq probably thinks he played basketball with fundamentals.

  • Mburb321

Exactly JTaylor hes a first ballot hall of famer, so why does he need to write a book about how big baby didnt pass him the ball or how Dwight Howard used his nickname. These issues are so small and irrelevant that they don’t need to be discussed.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

  • Heals

Mburb, if those were the only 2 chapters then you got a point, but they aren’t so why act as if they are. (I’m not coming at you like it comes accross when reading) Have you read these passages within the complete context, do you know how the whole book is being laid out? This is ridiculous to nitpick aspects of book none of you have read in its entirety. This need to jump to conclusions (not you Mburb) is so unecessary; read the book when it comes out and decide then what you “feel” deserved discussion. I understand Shaq is polarizing, but how ya’ll can pass judgement on an entire book based off maybe 3% of it is misguided. And Seed, oh seed, time to switch to decaf man…

  • http://www.scribblesoffury.com Bainbridge Wright

There aren’t many shots to go around on that team. I don’t blame Big Baby for taking what he can get.

Good for Shaq. I don’t care if it was a role player or star player. If anyone has there man beat and doesn’t get that ball, don’t matter the sport, the player that didn’t deliver should get scolded.
In this instance, Shaq had a point. And Grande Bebe should have known better.
    Oh well…

  • Heals

nevermind Mburb, finally saw your other posts. You’re grabbing change off the backboard with your consclusions in this discussion. It’s not the swiping of the nickname, it’s the fact that Dwight has copied much of Shaq’s (no Shaq’s not the first to have this happen and won’t be last, but it’s true) persona in order to cash in and become a media darling. The Big Man resents that and rightfully so. It seems “petty” to you cause you don’t live in their world and are therefore an outsider. Is it nasty move by Dwight, of course not. I bet he doesn’t even fully realize the jist of Shaq’s feelings towards him (which probably enfuriates Diesel even more). Is Shaq 100% right in what he’s doing, obviously not, but your bias blinds us from taking your some of your points legitimately. You know you agree, you just hate Shaq too much to admit so…

  • Lan

Shaq seems like a very sore guy. I’ve done well in my life but I’m still sore. I’ll put out a book and make some cash too. Shaq Attaq!

  • Blinguo

When he finally does go and “Book(‘s) It,” it makes that other guy go insane and attempt to badly format his own list and tell Shaq to re-book that?! The booking business is serious. National Book Association. Kobe “Book” Bryan(i)t.

  • shutupallenp

Almost every article i read i see this guys comments and sometimes i think okay heres someone who sounds educated probably went to a good school, and sometimes posts the stupidest comments. The difference between kobe talking about Kwame and shaq talking about Glenn is because its in his book. Kobe just talks ish about people. Shaqs book is a tell all, and whats the definition of a role player? If Glenn would play his role he shoulda dumped it down like the coach drew it up. Kobe said Kwame didnt want the ball, big difference than some role player chuckin up some stupid shots. Oh and anyone that thinks Shaq is lazy, really hasnt watched him play. What other power bigman has had a career like Shaq? and please dont get me started on Dwight Howard…..he will be lucky to have half the career Shaq had

  • DukeFromDeep

With this bloody lockout the only thing we have is these Shaq ‘insights’ and I for one like it. Looking forward to the book…. I’m going to read it!

How did Dwight copy off of Shaq… He even said it himself, that a few of his teammates told him to wear the Halloween costume. It was for a DUNKING CONTEST!!! GET OVER IT SHAQ YOU’RE TOO FAT TO BE SUPERMAN ANYWAY! Everyone started calling Dwight Superman, he never said he was. In an interveiw he said the fans call him that so he went along with it. I have lost all respect for Shaq, how can you get on Kobe for breaking the “guycode” and you are doing it yourself. Quit being bitter because Kobe still won chips without you. Ofcourse it took a team but you and a lot of people are ignorant and think it was because of “A” certain player. It doesn’t matter how many MVP’S or Chips you won, or how many your coach has won. You are to always respect your coach. The sad thing is a lot of star players don’t. The players that we thought were “Good” guys aren’t so good and the “Bad” guys aren’t that bad.

Lmao @ tomtom. crayons? that ish had me rolling.

  • OldSchoolBaller

I can’t believe that anyone says Shaq was an elite athlete. Being oversized, and physically gifted doesnt make you an elite athlete. There are natural athletes [Shaq] who would have done great at football too if he had the same body. He never worked at his game or trained or elevated his game,. He looked like more of a baller at LSU (original Shaq attack) and Orlando, than he ever did after. Once he realized that he was big enough to play in the league and could dominate by brute strength (Lakers) he never added to his game. Kobe knew Shaq was lazy and hated to practice. He has no jump shot, or free throw, or anything reliable besides a dunk and a layup, never did. He is not a skilled player, just a big one. Can’t jump now, injury prone because he never took care of himself and has looked like a mediocre centre at best in the last 5 years probably longer. If Shaq can’t dunk… he is a slow moving tree that clogs up the paint. If Shaq can’t jump he is a foul prone, no jumping shot blocker…. and you know hom everybody wants one of those. With all that size he got used regularly by Hakeem, Robinson, and Duncan… Him in the NBA is like me playing on a nerf hoop. Doesn’t mean I’m great, just means I’m exploiting my size. Shaq has looked tired since he went to Miami and been fat just about as long. Best thing about him being out of the league is people can see him as the hater he has always been. Sore winner, loser, whatever. He goes after guys because he can. Never once looked in the mirror and said I should have been better, and every other top center has said as much. As far as I’m concerned Big Baby should have told him to shut his fat ass up. Glad his ass is retired…. he was making the Celtics look desperate. PS one good game a year means you suck…. Top 10 center? Yes but only if you count his years before Miami. Dwayne Wade carried him in Miami….

  • Hawkman

@ Siraj First D Howard is every bit of 6’11” if not taller so next time you want to run your mouth do some research first. 2nd wether Shaq was liked by teammates or not he is and will always be a legend in the NBA he is one of the best centers in the history of the NBA.. And for your commment about him and Queen James nobody gets along with him or his ego… He is an overrated ball hog choke artist… I am not saying that he cant play just that he isn’t as good as advertised… He isn’t reliable when his team needs him… When you are a true star/ go to guy in the NBA you need to be able to make the plays that need to be made to win the game something that Queen James has proved over and over he cannot do. If he does win a title it is going to be because of Wade, Bosh and the rest of the supporting cast in Miami not because of him.Lebron isn’t the best player in the nba he isn’t even the best player in Miami Wade is the true star of that team… I get tired of hearing people brag about Queen James dunking people like Rajon Rondo Are you serious Lebron is like 6’8” or 6’9” 280+ and brags when he dunks on a guy that is 6’0”- 6’1” 16o lbs soaking wet Are you serious that is like me dunking on my 4 year old son. No disrespect to Rondo I am a big fan of his it is just the size difference is ridiculous… I would expect someone that is that muuch bigger to dunk on the litte guy… It isn’t a big feat…. Come on Queen James no need to act tough!!! Or act like it was awsome cause it really wasn’t.. I know this post wasn’t about Lebron but that comment about getting along with Lebron really made me think about all the stuff I hate about him and I felt like putting it out there….

  • Joe Black

Kudos to Davis. He was smart enough not to pass to a fat, lazy, idiot crybaby. He backed that coward down and gave him his immature tantrum crap right back in his face. Notice that Shaq did not punch him, rather like a typical whining punk he just talks about it later when Davis isn’t standing right in front of him.

Shaq had only one good season his entire career. When Phil Jackson controlled his mind and got him in halfway decent shape, and made him do what he was told.

After the first title, he partied all summer and showed up fat and totally out of shape again, which is how he spent the rest of his career even after the Lakers booted is lazy locker room cancer ass.
He took the first half of that season off, claiming injury again. When he came back in January, Kobe was leading the league in scoring. Shaq selfishly refused to play defense unless he scored more points than Kobe. (dog won’t guard house)

Kobe got the team to back to the finals, where Shaq threw his fits and demanded the ball so he could steal the Finals MVP’s which he did not deserve. Till Ben Wallace and Elden Campbell punked him and the Lakers were fed up w/ his childish crap for good.

That is all history. I will give Shaq recent props in his analyst career for realizing and stating how much Kobe did for his career. Though I do expect him to lose emotional control as usual and blow it w/ another stupid statement.
