Spike Lee: Knicks to Win NBA Championship ‘Very Soon’

Film maker Spike Lee is often referred to as the New York Knicks’ biggest fan — he certainly spends enough money on the team to warrant the designation — and he’s of the belief that the squad is close to ending its 38-year championship drought. From the NY Post: “Lee has hopes that [a labor agreement] can be reached soon and talked about how the lockout is not just having a negative effect on the basketball world, but it is also hurting the businesses that surround Madison Square Garden. ‘It comes down to money. There’s got to be a middle ground somewhere. It’s affecting people, a lot of people. I bet Footaction doesn’t make as much money because before the game people come in here before the game. This whole area thrives on it, when you have 20,000 people in the Garden everyone makes money here,’ Lee said. When and if basketball does return to the Garden this year, Lee has high expectations for the Knicks, and he believes that they will be a contender for the NBA title sooner rather than later. ‘We have a great team and I keep telling my son Jackson that one day, very soon, the Knicks will have an NBA championship. People might think I’ve been smoking something but we’re going to have a championship,’ Lee said.”

I want them to win one, but shut the hell up spike.

  • Yesse

They aren’t gonna win anything, because they are not able to play now or who knows for how long.

  • MUBWAR

hahahahahahaha…oh spike. the knicks aren’t contenders. More like a second round ECF team than a champion. it takes D to brings in rings.

  • ab40

first round sweap again next year. Players don’t understand D

  • http://nba.com GP23

Make a few trades here and there.. and the Knicks have a solid chance.

  • Waggle

I could see hell freezing over first, before a Knicks title.

  • http://www.slamonline.com rich

cleveland will get one before the knicks loll

  • http://slamonline.com biged

@GP23, that goes for every single team in the NBA. A couple of trades here and there and everyone has a solid chance. It takes a good front office to make those trades, something the Knicks don’t seem to have

  • http://nba.com GP23

Knicks could trade Billups and Turiaf for Chris Paul. Then they could trade Balkman, Jeffries, Douglas and Fields for Dwight Howard. It’s highly unlikely those trades would happen, but the deal is there.
    PG- Paul
    SG- Shumpert
    SF- Melo
    PF- Amare
    C- Dwight
    ^could win a championship.

  • Red

You’re an idiot Dwight & Chris? You wouldn’t even get Chris in the new MBA lmao. Knicks suck

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

First off, no you can’t trade Balkman Jeffries Douglas and Fields for Dwight, even under the current system. Their all those salaries are not enough to match up with Dwight’s contract (not to mention those guys f*cking suck and would never be enough for a Dwight Howard trade). Secondly, the Knicks are spending way way too much money on Melo & Stoudemire to assume building a championship level team is even possible. Let alone likely. Can they get another max player? yes. Will they be able to have any other players on the whole roster who makes more then $5M a year, even if the salary cap stays the same? No. — Now answer this question, how many teams in history have won a title with 2 “star” players who don’t play defense, and a supporting cast similar to that of the Miami Heat? (hint, it’s more then negative 1, but less then positive 1). Can the Knicks become a playoff fixture? yes, they probably already are. Can they Knicks win a title anytime soon? Not unless something drastic happens.

  • Youngindy21

Yeah, I doubt the Knicks win a title soon. They play NO defense and they don’t have a ton of depth on their bench. Unless they make a few key trades I just don’t see it. To me the Knicks are Overrated anyway.

  • http://www.slamonline.com house

For a person who says he is the Knicks biggest fan should realise that in order to win a championship a team has to play coherent defence. Wake up and get a f**king clue Spike, oh and your shoes suck too.

  • EtheKnickFan

I been a knick fan as long if not longer than spike. We knick fans boast mightily, chest to chest. But….we are 3 players away. 2 we wont be able to afford the other would have to be some type of “who knew?” surprise. Strong defensive C- Dwight? Cmon fellas. Agressive team leading PG- CP3? ehhhhh mayb Darth Stern allows it. And that surprise player as a 6th man. Thats right not a starter a 6. So there u go. We need C, PG, and all-around 6 man. Spike, I dont see it. I love these guys but that deal doesnt fall into our laps.

  • LA Huey

Until they D up, they’re just a warm-up for the Heat and Bulls for the next several years.

  • John Starks

    Lmao GP23s trade scenario

    GP pass the blunt.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Well, spike must be delirous from this long lock-out. I understand Spike, we all miss the NBA.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

All the Knicks have to do is trade their entire roster for the Bulls’ entire roster and then do some trades to get Dwight Howard and they’re a LOCK!

  • http://www.slamonline.com biged

even getting a another star wont guarantee anything. Teams win championships, not supers stars (ask Lebron). They need to build a defensive minded team that plays hard. Should of never gotten Melo or Billups and kept their old exciting roster Then go all out in trying to get both CP3 and Howard. that would’ve been a better roster:
Chris Paul, Amare, Howard and everybody else they had at the start of last season, minus one or two guys. Tell Garnario dude to play defense or trade his ass for someone how will.

  • O

GP23, your trade scenario… why? Now why did you say it, but why would that even be in your head? We’d have to trade all those Knicks for CP3 ALONE if anything. And that’s a HUGE IF! We can’t get Dwight for all those players AND every draft pick for the next 10 years. Look, all Knicks need to do is sign CP3 and try to gas a center like DeAndre Jordan or Samuel Dalembert to sign for a little less than they’d get on the market. OR we can do the unthinkable – and probably improbable – and trade Billups, Fields AND Stat to Orlando for Dwight. Then gas CP3 or D-Will to sign and form the most elite guard, forward, center trio in the league.

The Knicks are better than most ppl think right NOW!!! Not just with cp3 and howard and whoever else you think they’ll sign. It’s just like the Giants baby…. keep sleeping and we’ll see you when you’re looking at us with homecourt advantage in the playoffs!! whenever that is :(

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Hell yea! DeAndre Jordan in orange and blue yea i can see that tho…

  • http://aol.com danny cohn

With the right free agent pick ups and the team staying together and staying healthy and working hard to become a better defensive team the knicks may have a chance to win a title. But one factor will stop them unless they change it dantoni must be fired the knicks will never win a title with his coaching philosophy. He just doesnt have what it takes mentally as a coach to lead our knicks to the promise land so hey dolan make a good descision for once and fire your bum of a coach.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

D’Antoni can go, after he signed Duhon (who was the worst starting point guard in the league) I knew he wasn’t going to be a good fit.

  • BoWeezy24

They Should Pick Up Steve Nash…

  • Knicks

    #LINSANITY.
