Blake Griffin: Clippers Aren’t a Joke Anymore

Blake Griffin may no longer be deliriuosly jumping around a parking lot at the thought of catching lobs from Chris Paul, but he’s still very excited about the Clippers’ newest point guard, who he feels brings the team instant credibility. From ESPN: “Blake Griffin would have you believe that all he did Wednesday night after learning the Los Angeles Clippers had acquired All-Star point guard Chris Paul was do laundry, have dinner with teammate DeAndre Jordan, and watch a couple college basketball games. That he slept soundly while basketball fans across the land dreamed of alley-oops from the masterful young point guard to the NBA’s reigning slam dunk champion. Far-fetched, sure. But Griffin wasn’t about to get too far ahead of himself. ‘I’m not going to sit here and promise that we’re going to win this amount of games or that we’re going to go this far in the playoffs,’ he said. ‘There’s going to be none of that. The only thing I’m going to promise is that you’re going to get our best every night and when you hear the Clippers, it’s not going to be a joke anymore. I can guarantee you that.’”

I’ve already seen “Lob City” shirts, things are gonna get really interesting in LA…

Can’t wait to see this squad. Despite having no depth their starters are solid and work together.

  • http://nba.com GP23

6th seed in the western playoffs, possibly 5th seed.

  • Ryan D.

Lob City chick Lob City chick…

    You tell ‘em, Blake!
No more of this “Paper Clipps” nonsense!

Ok, I may say it right now: the Clippers make have a better record than the Lakers next season.
You have a starting lineup of: Chris Paul, Mo Williams, Caron Butler, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. Chris Paul will work beautifully setting up Griffin (Paul + Griffin = the new Nash + Amare?) and Jordan while Butler will take pressure off Paul by getting his own shots. You also have a stalwart vet in Billups coming off the bench, limiting Paul’s minutes so that he is not injured (Paul plays 30-32 minutes, Billups plays 15-18 minutes) while never sacrificing ball movement. Wow. Jamario Moon and Trey Thompkins will fill up the limited bench time at the forward/center spots.
Now, the real power comes in trades. The Clippers have no one at SG, and while they can put a point guard lineup of Mo Williams and Randy Foye there, they probably require a little bit more firepower. You have a very tradable asset in Eric Bledsoe, and Williams/Foye can be used as bait as well. If you can get a solid shooting guard (and maybe an extra center, since Thompkins may not pan) I’d say they have a reasonable shot at being the best team in LA. If only they had grabbed Fernandez from Dallas for nothing when they had the chance, then it’d be a definite.

    LOB CITY >> SHOWTIME

  • vctmac

@Jukai – couldnt of said it any better.
the clippers have a small backcourt by length size wtv you wanan call it, tho, they have great shot blockers downlow. if i were the clippers, i would be patient and get in touch with Earl JR “Swish” Smith’s agent, Leon Rose and get a warm offer across. i would believe, JR would welcome the oppurtunity in hollywood ! LOL, thinking about tht roster is giving me goosebumps. No need to woory about JR’s presence in the locker room, as im sure Big Shot Billups will take care of this young gun. so for now, clear up some cap space and what not.

  • Ldub20

Clips should bring back Q and Dmiles. There you have your shooter and another SF behind CB. Everyone can catch lobs from CP besides Willams and Billups. Not a Clipper band wagoner but I do like the pieces they have. Is it possible to be a fan of half a teams squad and not actually the team?? Sheeiiitt I guess so

  • robb

They’ll always be a joke until the contrary is shown. They may be a fun joke now.

  • John Peck

trade for andrew gaze would sort out the SG problem for clippers

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Jukai, Chauncy is not going to only play back up point, He is going to play alot of SG. Probably even start there

  • DukeFromDeep

Clips better than the Lakers already!

I’m real happy for LA, real Clips fans and hoops heads in general, but slow your role newbies. Apparently none of you are acknowledging the elephant in the room; Donald Sterling. The next time he spends money to create a winner will be the first. Caron and DJ are steps in the right direction, but Sterling has an extensive history of doing just the opposite. Be cautiously optimistic Clips fans/Laker haters, cause there’s an important variable in this equation that can’t be accounted for…

Megatron: You actually may be right.

  • Heals

    4 ucking times, what a rookie move…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign Megatron: Billups would work out better at the 2 than Mo Williams. Chauncey can probably guard most 2′s, and has played it in the past, especially for Team USA. I also don’t see the Clippers trading Bledsoe, and who better to mentor him than the best PG in the game?
If they start Chauncey Billups, Mo Williams would make a great sixth man–he’d be a definite Jason Terry-type SMOTY candidate–while Bledsoe spells Paul.
If one guy has to be traded it’s going to be Mo Williams or Chauncey Billups, imo (I would personally rather have Chauncey)–but keeping both might actually be the best scenario. They aren’t going to get a better player than Chauncey Billups to play shooting guard, and I doubt they’ll find a better sixth man than Mo Williams.
Clippers need some bench players for their front line, but other than that, they’re looking ridiculously good right now.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

And if you thought CP3 to Tyson Chandler was cool… The CP3-Griffin-connection is going to be a work of art.

  • http://averysmith.org Avery Smith

Yes it’s true that the Clippers don’t have a flagship shooting guard. You guys fail to realize though that they have TOUGH JUICE CARON BUTLER. He’s a beast at the role of SF and more than compensates for the Clips SG woes. Remember, the Mavs didn’t have a solid SG either. Stevenson? Terry? those guys are “knock down shot” SGs. Role players who were propped up by the scoring threat of Dirk/CARON TOUGH JUICE BUTLER, and at times Shawn Marion. So if you have a solid PG, SF, and PF, Mo Williams would be a perfect fit. I hope this is the year when we get to see an LA/LA Playoff Series.

  • http://skjflf.com Jukai

Teddy, hat drop to you. That scenario works better than mine. Chauncey actually works great at the two, he can knock down those open threes that Paul gets him with ease.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

yeah jukai. chauncey will start no doubt in my mind. Mo Will is going to be the new JET. I know he may not like being a bench player, but he’s going to love having the green light at all times as the main scorer for the bench squad

  • Justin G.

I thought once you were picked up after being amnestied you couldn’t be traded until July 1st anyway?

  • Yesse

Well, looking at the Clips now, they might be the better team in LA right now.

  • hushabomb

What the Clippers might do is play like the Detroit Bad Boys. Isiah is CP3. Chauncey is Dumars. MoWill is the microwave. It won’t matter who gets the ball, just get it and run.

And you will have a dynamic frontline of Butler, Griffin and Jordan. Better hope your bench holds up.

Hopefully the players can reign in their egos and play as a team cos for the most part they haven’t. All eyes are on you now.

  • French toast

They should trade Mo.Williams for OJ Mayo !

  • Sean

Two words to put all this Clippers talk into context – Vinny DelNegro

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    Paper Clips at Staples. Poetic.

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

Woooaaaah Blake, easy at taunting the Clipper Curse. Now you can just see him, Paul, DeAndre and Chauncey getting picked off ‘Final Destination’ style. Don’t tempt death Blake!
Chauncey might…might! start at two-guard for a bit, but look for them to get someone else in there. Mo will be traded for depth up front or for a two. Chauncey will mainly be utilized as third guard, but I’d expect him to play lots of crunch time minutes. Him and Paul orchestrating an offense down the stretch is like some 2-minute drill on steroids

  • http://slamonline.com BossTerry

^cosign that. Lets not get ahead of ourselves saying they will be better than the Lakers. One key injury, and they’re back to being the Clippers. I’m happy Clip fans have something to be excited about however, remember when they had Brand,Miles,Odom,QRich (one of Slam’s best covers IMO)? How did that turn out?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

The Clippers are still 14 million below the cap. And they have 4 PG’s that need and deserve minutes. I think it’s safe to assume we don’t know what the Clippers will look like in a few months. And they are also 1 injury from still being a joke anyway.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

This team still will suck, be a 6th to 8th seed, get put out in 1st round. Then Paul will be like I left New Orleans for this, my main sidekick has no post moves and can’t shoot, but can catch lobs, jump high and dunks over cars. Paul will regret this choice. Chris Paul needs to call this his Randy “Raiders Lost” Moss years. BOOK IT!!

lol @ the Andrew Gaze comment.
btw – that $14M under the cap still needs to go to Griffin because he’s still on his rookie contract.
