Blazers Intend to Keep Brandon Roy

The Blazers’ front-office tried to quell talk of possibly using the amnesty clause on Brandon Roy, insisting that he’s a part of the team going forward, and may even play a larger role going into the new season. From the Oregonian: “Our plan is for Brandon to be a part of this team going forward,’ team president Larry Miller said. ‘Hopefully he will show us what he can do.’ Miller, acting GM Chad Buchanan and coach Nate McMillan met with Roy, then talked about the upcoming season in an afternoon news conference at the Rose Garden. They revealed that Roy told them he feels better than he did at the start of last season, and at the moment it seems the team might not use the amnesty clause to waive Roy, as many figured it would. McMillan, in fact, went so far as to say he would consider starting Roy, a three-time All-Star who was limited to 47 games last season because of issues with his knees. ‘We have not seen him back in the starting lineup,’ McMillan said. ‘That’s something we’re going to take a look at.’ Team President Larry Miller and acting GM Chad Buchanan say there are no plans to use the amnesty clause on Brandon Roy, and coach Nate McMillan even mentions the possibility of Roy returning to the starting lineup. This despite the fact that the Blazers, and the NBA’s other teams, will play a compressed 66-game schedule that could put pressure on Roy’s health. McMillan said he has not been told that there would be any restrictions on playing Roy, although he acknowledged it was not known how the schedule would affect Roy.”

guess they’ll have to amend the new CBA to not refer to the amnesty rule as the ‘Brandon Roy’ rule

They should keep him. At least wait and see how his knees are doing, they can’t take the risk of paying him 15-20 million a season to play good minutes for another team.

i love that move. thats loyality. besides that i believe in roy. he is such a smart player and never had to rely on his athleticism. he will be very effective and better than last year. i also think the long break was really good for him.

All the blazers gain from amnestying him right now is a shot at any mid level exeption free agents. That’s pretty weak. At best a SHOT at Carl Landry. Might as well keep him around for a year and amnesty him next year since they can do that.

felix is right. Might as well give him a chance to show what he can still do. Portland’s not in the same position as Miami with Mike Miller.

If you don’t have salary cap concerns and you don’t have a FA out there that you are trying to clear space for, why would you amnesty a player? Specifically if that player can be of use to you – at least in the shor term. Similar situation in Cleveland with Baron Davis, a lot of people thought they would amnesty him, but as of yet the Cavs have said they don’t intend too – as there is no benefit in doing so (no salary cap concerns for the year and no FA they are trying to make space for). Besides that, IF this year does prove that Roy’s knees just can’t take it, they can amnesty him prior to next season. Overall, smart move by the Blazers.

I think they’re just being cautious, not overly loyal. They don’t want to waive him and watch him turn into the second coming of Grant Hill (Phoenix version, not Orlando). If he breaks down and can’t handle it, they can waive him later. There’s really no pressure on the Blazers to amnesty Roy right away. They have to pay him anyway, so they might as well see what he has left before making any decisions.
