Chauncey Billups: ‘I’m Tired of Being the Good Guy’

Chauncey Billups isn’t handling the fact that he was waived by the Knicks very well, and tells Yahoo! Sports that any (non-contending) team that dares to sign him will be in a world of trouble: “He wants the freedom of free agency to choose a contender, Billups says. As one of the game’s great leaders, and gentlemen, Billups warns that player will be a distant memory should a team claim him off the amnesty waiver wire. ‘I’ m tired of being the good guy,’ Billups said. ‘I’m tired of being viewed as the guy. After a while, you just kind of get taken advantage of in these situations. I’ve been known as a leader, and I am a leader, but a leader can be as disruptive as he can be productive, especially when you carry a strong voice and people rally around you. This is about me now. This is about me, and teams should know that right now.’ The Knicks picked up Billups’ $14.2 million option for the 2011-’12 season, but used the new amnesty provision on him so that they could sign free agent Tyson Chandler. Under the new rule, the team that offers to pay the highest portion of his contract can secure him in a blind bidding process. The Knicks will be left to pay for the remainder of the deal. If Billups goes unclaimed, he can sign as a free agent. The Miami Heat would be a strong possibility for him, among several contenders.”

Did everyone forget that this guy was a finals MVP? 6 consecutive apperances to a conference finals. Detroit Pistons were absolutely dismantled once this guy left. Mr. Billups is a ball player the guy knows how to win, for crying out loud his nick name is “Mr. Big Shot”. I hope you get on a good team and win another ring.

his statement doesnt bother me, i think hes been bounced around enough and what part of his contract says he has to be a good team player? or just suck it up? his contract isnt based on performance, like allenp said his 14mil is guaranteed, hes just warning non-contenders to stay away, he didnt complain when his hometown team traded him, he didnt complain when he was shafted by the pistons. he didnt say he wouldnt sign, he just stated he would use his influence to make others around him as unhappy as he would be in a non-contender situation

So within two days we have our first issue in the new CBA? Good to see the lockout wasn’t just a waste of time.

I like him in boston in a sam cassel like role in 08 especialy in this setting with so many games and so little rest. I think he’d be a great fit. Than David West and some other tough bigs like reggie evans and a guy who can block shots and boston is a lot of fun to watch and dangerous.

After reading what Billups said, I hope the Detroit Pistons claim him. Then he can retire where he won a chip. Bitter Billups should remember, he’s still getting paid 14.2 million dollars because the Knicks picked up the last year of his contract. If he should be mad at anyone, it should be the Denver Nuggets, his hometown team, who traded his arse not once, but twice. If he joins the Heat, I wish him nothing but ill will. Bottom line, shut your BIG mouth Billups.

if it were any other player, i’d bash them for saying this. However… chauncey is in a different situation. He was traded for iverson, traded bc melo wanted to ditch the nuggets AND was amnestied from the knicks bc chandler needed to be signed. Traded basically from some of his best friends in detroit, out of his hometown of denver and out of a great NY situation and may now be dwelling somewhere in charlotte. He’s just letting it known that he aint having it.

If a below cap team picks up chauncey just for the hell of it well… they better know they aint going to get a motivated guy. he will be a HINDERANCE all yr. let chauncey pick btw L.A. and miami. IMO his best destination would be MIA with all the free wide open 3pt looks he’d get. He doesn’t have to play all the game bc chalmers is a respectable backup. LA on the other hand has the fanfare & all of the glamour, 2 big men, maybe dwight and kobe. id pick miami. he’d serve a bigger purpose on the lakers though i mean fish’s days are over.

Chauncey gets his option picked up , likely the last big payday he’ll ever get and now he’s complaining about getting released. Seems kind of out of touch with reality…
