Chauncey Billups: ‘I’m Tired of Being the Good Guy’

Chauncey Billups isn’t handling the fact that he was waived by the Knicks very well, and tells Yahoo! Sports that any (non-contending) team that dares to sign him will be in a world of trouble: “He wants the freedom of free agency to choose a contender, Billups says. As one of the game’s great leaders, and gentlemen, Billups warns that player will be a distant memory should a team claim him off the amnesty waiver wire. ‘I’ m tired of being the good guy,’ Billups said. ‘I’m tired of being viewed as the guy. After a while, you just kind of get taken advantage of in these situations. I’ve been known as a leader, and I am a leader, but a leader can be as disruptive as he can be productive, especially when you carry a strong voice and people rally around you. This is about me now. This is about me, and teams should know that right now.’ The Knicks picked up Billups’ $14.2 million option for the 2011-’12 season, but used the new amnesty provision on him so that they could sign free agent Tyson Chandler. Under the new rule, the team that offers to pay the highest portion of his contract can secure him in a blind bidding process. The Knicks will be left to pay for the remainder of the deal. If Billups goes unclaimed, he can sign as a free agent. The Miami Heat would be a strong possibility for him, among several contenders.”

Gotta feel for the guy, he’s been the victim of someone else’s playing desires twice in less than a year!

    welcome to south beach!

  • jb3

Dam shame how New York would s@#t on Chauncey like that but then again I’m not surprised. Just look how they treated Patrick Ewing smh

  • MikeC.

I view the Knicks as being classy and a-holish on this move. First they picked up his option for $14.2 mil when they could have just cut him loose at the end of last season. Classy. Then they amnestied him, leaving him open to get picked up by any scrub team. A-holish. Too bad they couldn’t have worked out a sign and trade to Dallas for Chandler or back home to Denver for Nene.

this is why so many players are choosing their own destiny. How can u be mad at them? u come into the league drafted by whoever picks you. after awhile you get TIRED of being cattle lol yanno? how can u commit to anything and play your hardest when its no commitment to u? just like a relationship. so its time for everyone to choose their own destiny. pursuit of happiness gaaht damnit

Did anyone catch the Xavier – Cincinatti game?
You could see the tension from halftime..

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I still think it was stupid for the Knicks to let this guy go…

  • T-Money

man, this could be such a big signing for miami. he could have a tremendous influence on the big 3 from a leadership perspective. and with battier and billups, miami would not be portrayed as villainsby media anymore – they LOVE these guys. billups, wade, james, bosh, anthony with haslem, battier, rio and curry off the bench. then you trade mike miller and joel anthony for a center before the deadline.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

lebrons my favorite player and chauncy is my second. I would be completely thrilled if he went to miami

Man, I swear everyone be hoppin’ on Miami’s d*ck ever since they created the Big 3. Even Boston didn’t see this level of D*ck riding when they assembled the first Big 3. SMH…

  • jamaal87

Lakers should just forget about Paul, keep their front court and instead sign Billups….if possible?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Does MIA have enough money to sign him? He has no choice but to go to the team with the most money even or he sits out the entire season and becomes a FA next year.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Who cares, Billups has been overrated since 2004. Three good seasons, doesn’t mean he is a leader. New York made a good move. I would rather have Douglas at the point. BOOK IT!!

  • T-Money

jtaylor: doesn’t exactly works that way. teams that are under the cap can place bids on him for 48 hours. there are 8 teams under the cap and none of them need him. after that, he becomes a free agent and can do whatever he wants. miami would only be able to offer him the vet min but that wouldn’t matter since NYK still has to give him 14 mil this year. all in all, there’s a very good chance he’ll be in miami monday.

  • Tyquan

Miami wouldn’t exactly be a bad fit for Chauncey Billups at this time or maybe he could go back to Boston if he wants to be a back up to Rajon Rondo but who knows cuz I always say that Chauncey has about 2 or 3 good years left. I ain’t trying to hear that he is too old I mean look at J Kidd, Steve Nash and Andre Miller or whomever I forgot to mention at this time but he should consider taking his talents to South Beach but please NO corny ass hour long special on ESPN nobody wants to go thru that again sorry Cleveland I’m just saying!

  • http://what? Gary

All you bandwagon Miami fans were Bull’s fans in the 90′s, Ultimate Warrior fans in wrestling, Patriot, NY Yankee/ (Pujols) Angel fans….You guyz disgust me…

  • http://fivemag.de Speedy

    @ the seed
Clearly you don’t understand basketball if you say that Chauncey isn’t a leader.
I mean he isn’t your most athletic player or your deadliest shooter but he makes good decisions. That is something Douglas has to show.
    Show some respect please.

  • RunNGun

I like Billups and dislike that he’s been tossed around. It sucks to be in his position but the NBA is a business after all. However, he doesn’t need to have that attitude; he’s getting paid 14.2 million dollars not to play in New York. I’ll take that any day of the week. Billups is too good to retire. If he’s headed to a contender and wants to start, Miami is the most logical choice, though I doubt he’d take the vet minimum. Cheer up Chauncey… at least you’re not in NOLA or ORLANDO.

  • http://fivemag.de Speedy

    I feel sorry for Chauncey.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

RunNGun, isn’t he getting that 14.2 million guarenteed this year anyway? so why would he not take the veterans minimum?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

I would LOVE to see Mr. Billups in a Heat uni!! Miller can still be waived to make room, although I’d feel bad for Mike. If Chauncey would take a one year minimum deal, I’m sure more money and years could be offered in 2012/2013. Man, fingers and toes are crossed!

  • charliewinning

It’s business. The Knicks needed a defensive minded center more than they needed an old, overpaid, shoot first pg. I like Chauncey the person, but Chauncey the player is almost done. Good move by the Knicks.

  • ish

wow he said he is not comin off the bench. where have i heard that before? lol but i bet he still will get a spot on somebody’s team

  • Heals

This is like something out of a comic book or movie, of course he is going to join the Heat. It sounds too good. As a rule he should, forget that the whole team should always wear their black jerseys and just run with the moniker. Also let’s do Mia v NY in the 2nd round to spice it up more…

  • ionmic

This is just posturing on billups part to make sure eh clears waivers i wouldnt be surprised if he resigned as a knick

  • LA Huey

@ionmic, if I’m not mistaken, “amnestied” players can’t resign with the team that cut them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

I don’t think he can sign with the knicks can he? that would be stupid.. then teams could just amnesty their highest paid player and resign him for the minumum so the player would still get paid but it wouldn’t count on the cap.. that would make no sense at all

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

wait I guess that couldn’t happen cause a team under the cap would just claim them, but still it wouldnt make sense

LMAO at Heat fans in this thread salivating for Smooth. He aint gonna join your team. Book it!

  • MikeC.

@IAMORANGE – If Billups is spiteful, he’ll sign with the Heat or the Celtics. My guess is he goes home to Denver, plays another 2-3 years, then moves into a coaching or front office position. He won’t sign with a scrub team for no reason, but his hometown team that promised him a role in the future is another story.

  • james

How many more NBA vets will go down to Miami to swing from LeBron and Wade’s testicles? They should learn something from Bibby, who is about 6 million lighter in the pocketbook for doing the same.

  • TiredOfTheSpooledBrats

Billups gets paid $14.2 million no matter where he plays… so you guys telling me, you would demand to play in Miami (or some other over the cap team) and get the $14.2 million or YOU would cause trouble? Can you say spoiled brat?

The NBA is not gonna be worth watching if there are only TWO good teams. Or how about this, we just have ONE good team. All the best players get to got there and the guys who couldn’t make the high school teams, play for the rest of the league…

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

This is basically Miami talk. If Billups were on the Heat and Miami actually embraced being the ‘bad guy’ team I would appreciate them.

  • http://Bulls.com HarryTwatter

LMAO @ THESE DUMB A$$ HEAT FANS!! What money does the organization have?? The only move their could make was Battier lmao!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

I don’t even think Billups is a good fit for Miami anyway. I agree will The Seed, Chauncey is a bit overrated. Ever since the Finals MVP I think he’s been trying to live up to the Mr. Big SHot nickname and he forces a lot of ill-advised shots that a veteran PG shouldn’t take.

  • Chauncey Billups

I’m going to Miami . End of story

  • Allenp

    To explain it
Billups will be paid his $14 million no matter what. He can’t sign with the Knicks. Any team with cap space bids on him and that off sets the Knicks costs.
If nobody bids he can sign where he likes. Even the Lakers if the chris Paul thing fails.
If the team is over the cap it can use one of those exceptions or the minimum.
Chauncey making this threat is wack though and I typically support players. He is getting paid big bucks. Part of the new CBS he agreed to allows this to happen. He needs to honor his commitment. This is not cool at all.

  • ryan

hes turning heel like wwe wrestler…LMFAO……damn what a move by knicks!!shame…

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Ballzy move by the Knicks don’t worry Billups it’s not ur fault!

  • http://google J-Ro

just a thought, would New York still be able to sign him?? i dont know all the details about how the amnesty works…

  • Kilo

    Say Hello: The Billups Remix

  • Jesus The Notorious

    Good for you, Chauncy.
Altho, personally, I feel its just a little bit too late.
You’re 34 yrs old. Past your prime. Its a roll of the dice on your part to all of a sudden challenge your inner Scarface and be “the bad guy”.
But who knows? It may work out in your favor. Here’s hoping it does.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I wholeheartedly disagree with AllenP on this one. The man has every right to say” no, I don’t want to sign with this team or that team”. I think he has been in the L long enough to be able to make a decision on what is to be his final run in the NBA. What if the wolves or cavs have enough money to pick him up? So you’re saying that he should be stuck on a lottery team for the final years of his career instead of on a contender with chance at going out on a winning note? Come on man!

  • jdn41

Did everyone forget that this guy was a finals MVP? 6 consecutive apperances to a conference finals. Detroit Pistons were absolutely dismantled once this guy left. Mr. Billups is a ball player the guy knows how to win, for crying out loud his nick name is “Mr. Big Shot”. I hope you get on a good team and win another ring.

lol @ gary with the ultimate warrior comment

  • shutup

his statement doesnt bother me, i think hes been bounced around enough and what part of his contract says he has to be a good team player? or just suck it up? his contract isnt based on performance, like allenp said his 14mil is guaranteed, hes just warning non-contenders to stay away, he didnt complain when his hometown team traded him, he didnt complain when he was shafted by the pistons. he didnt say he wouldnt sign, he just stated he would use his influence to make others around him as unhappy as he would be in a non-contender situation

  • Stroshow

So within two days we have our first issue in the new CBA? Good to see the lockout wasn’t just a waste of time.

  • TMos

    Go to LAL!!!!!

  • ab40

I like him in boston in a sam cassel like role in 08 especialy in this setting with so many games and so little rest. I think he’d be a great fit. Than David West and some other tough bigs like reggie evans and a guy who can block shots and boston is a lot of fun to watch and dangerous.

  • dan

oh no… after the ewing curse hit us, we just f*cked up the next 10 years by bringing the billups curse upon us. watch nowitzki and dallas: loyality pays off

After reading what Billups said, I hope the Detroit Pistons claim him. Then he can retire where he won a chip. Bitter Billups should remember, he’s still getting paid 14.2 million dollars because the Knicks picked up the last year of his contract. If he should be mad at anyone, it should be the Denver Nuggets, his hometown team, who traded his arse not once, but twice. If he joins the Heat, I wish him nothing but ill will. Bottom line, shut your BIG mouth Billups.

  • feez_22

if it were any other player, i’d bash them for saying this. However… chauncey is in a different situation. He was traded for iverson, traded bc melo wanted to ditch the nuggets AND was amnestied from the knicks bc chandler needed to be signed. Traded basically from some of his best friends in detroit, out of his hometown of denver and out of a great NY situation and may now be dwelling somewhere in charlotte. He’s just letting it known that he aint having it.

  • feez_22

If a below cap team picks up chauncey just for the hell of it well… they better know they aint going to get a motivated guy. he will be a HINDERANCE all yr. let chauncey pick btw L.A. and miami. IMO his best destination would be MIA with all the free wide open 3pt looks he’d get. He doesn’t have to play all the game bc chalmers is a respectable backup. LA on the other hand has the fanfare & all of the glamour, 2 big men, maybe dwight and kobe. id pick miami. he’d serve a bigger purpose on the lakers though i mean fish’s days are over.

  • clydesays

Chauncey gets his option picked up , likely the last big payday he’ll ever get and now he’s complaining about getting released. Seems kind of out of touch with reality…

  • sam

@THESEED I guess you didnt see MR.BIG SHOT shoot over wade to take the lead andddddd get a steal off bosh in like few mins OVERRATED my A** must be a laker fan to say that since he destroyed them wit Detroit BOOOK THATTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
