Clippers Claim Chauncey Billups Off Waivers

After failing to complete a deal for Chris Paul, the Los Angeles Clippers have claimed Chauncey Billups off amnesty waiversYahoo! has the details: “Billups, 35, gives the young Clippers another veteran leader. The team also signed forward Caron Butler to a three-year, $24 million contract in free agency. The New York Knicks had used their amnesty clause on Billups to clear salary-cap room to acquire Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler. Under terms of the league’s amnesty police, any team under the salary cap can put bid on Billups. The bid will offset part of the $14.2 million the Knicks owe Billups in the final year of his contract. The Clippers can’t trade Billups this season. ‘After a while, you just kind of get taken advantage of in these situations,’ Billups said on Saturday. ‘I’ve been known as a leader – and I am a leader – but a leader can be as disruptive as he can be productive, especially when you carry a strong voice and people rally around you. This is about me now. This is about me, and teams should know that right now.’”

Wow, looks like the CP3 thing is off for real.

  • citisin

Looks like theyre getting a decent new starter so they can deal Baron David and Kaman in a deal for D12 maybe? If Sterling gets his thumb out of his a$$.

  • citisin

    Davis*

The Clippers can still trade Billups to the Hornets. Not saying they will, but they can. (Also, they among a host of rumors supposedly wouldn’t include Both Eric’s in the trade with NOH (Gordon Bledsoe))

  • Allenp

The story says he can’t be traded this season.
    Stern got his wish.

  • BlackStar

Go ahead Chauncey … Make it happen playa!

  • shutup

billups cant be traded this season, paul can still be traded elsewhere

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Now that they have billups, they probably should make that trade and put billups at the 2-guard position.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jacob J

I think this is a decent pickup by the Clippers, but I thought it would’ve been better if the Lakers would’ve snatched up Chauncey since they neeed a new one for Mike Browns system

  • Waggle

@citisin, baron was traded to cleveland last year… He will be amnestied. Not involved in a move for D12.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

citisin, do you actually still think baron davis is on the clippers?

  • jmoney

Chauncey Billups, Eric Gordon, Caron Butler, Blake Griffin and Chris Kamen.
with depth coming off the bench the Clippers look like they are making a move toward the top

    GO CLIPS!!!!!!!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Good move by the Clips. I still would have liked to see Billups in a Heat uniform, though. That would have been dangerous.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

I really need to stop saying things seconds after other people say it..

  • O

Just glad he ain’t going to Miami and making them stronger. Clippers should have a decent squad this year. Glad Billups is in a good situation…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

GREAT MOVE BY THE CLIPS! Looks like Heat fans can stop pinning for Billups now. Hah! EVERYBODY SAY GO NEW YORK GO NEW YORK GO! ALL MY PEOPLE SAY GO NEW YORK GO NEW YORK GO!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    *pining

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    Good pickup for them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

    Bummer…

  • http://thegoodpoint.com Sam Joynt

I thought this was just a bid. Can other teams not outbid them still?

  • Ldub20

@IAMORANGE4EVER…Billups wont even fit properly with the clips. Miami would have been a much better fit because they actually “needed” a point guard. Clippers have 2-3 guards already. Only reason this pick up makes sense is to use him in a trade. Bet money Billups will retire. He already stated he has been saving his money, and not to pick him up.

He can’t be traded to the Hornets – the deal is pretty much dead. Under new rules, he can’t be traded until he hits free agency on July 1, which means that the only way to get rid of him would be to place him on waivers, which I doubt they would do if they just took the trouble of picking him up off of it. They’re also matching DeAndre’s offer, which means they’re pretty set. Billups is going to be a good influence for Gordon/Bledsoe, etc. The Clippers have a pretty good team.

  • Trout

Will Chauncey really want to for there I thought he anted a contender? No disrespect to the clippers but they don’t got now but do have next if they keep the young core together. I may be jumping the gun a bit but this is not the move if I were Chauncey just find a spot like maybe I dunno the Spurs or even the Thunder (who are marginally along the road to contending) just saying….

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

NBA has warned him about not showing up for camp, etc. If he protests, they contest that it’ll be a breach of contract.

  • O

IAMORANGEFOREVER, how horrible was Swizz Beatz “Go New York” remix? Even Amare and Melo didn’t seem too enthusiastic in that joint. Horrible song. Let’s bring back the original joint from the 90′s…

  • robb

Sorry about that Orlando! Chauncey’s experience and leadership will be great for the young Clippers. They are doing all the right things, I’m impressed.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Sam, every team that wanted to bid had to place a sealed bid, out of the teams that bid, Clippers had the highest.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

OTB you are right my bad. The Clippers now have Mo Williams, Chauncey Billups, and Eric Bledsoe. I would think that by adding Billups for the season they intend to move someone, prolly Williams.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Ldub20 I’m just glad he aint going to Miami. Smooth would have been perfect for them. LOL. @O I agree, I like the 90′s ones better too, no offense to Swizz Beat though.

  • liljune

So obviously the Clippers thought Billups’ threat was a bluff or he was lying or he’s “crazy” to leave millions on the table. I blame Joe Dumars for this. Had he not traded Chauncey in the first place none of this mess would be happening. Way to go Joe D, you had one of the premier guards in the league. Now all you have is a wish and a dream that Stuckey (still waiting on him) and Brandon Knight will be half the leader that Chauncey is. Every core member of th ’04 championship has had a choice to to go where they wanted except Billups; and the Clippers knew this. Way to “Strew” him over Joe D and LA.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

so cp3 talks are apparently back on now.. chauncy will be even more upset if he has to play back up..

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Chris Paul to Clippers, tomorrow.

  • Ldub20

This nba nonsense is whack son! Damn clippers! Im gonna write an email to David Stern and see if he is willing to veto this signing to LA. Because in my mind, its bad for basketball! Billups to Miami petition has now officially started.

x ____Mark Cuban____ (1st to co-sign on some bs)

  • ThaKidNoah

Not liking this move one bit doesn’t really fit the clippers other than to provide leadership

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

  • http://slamonline.com JL

    how much is it for?

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

JL, if your asking how much they signed him for it was just over 2 million.

  • http://modularpeople.com Fut.

JUST MAKE CHRIS PAUL TO BLAKE GRIFFIN + DEANDRE HAPPEN ALREADY FFS

  • MikeC.

Clips have a solid team now. Nice move.

  • Heals

Didn’t see the Clips being the more active of the 2 LA teams. About time now…

  • Drig

Wait a sec…………doesn’t this allow the Clips to include Bledsoe in the deal for CP3 too?!?! ( Secretly hoping to see Blake and CP3 every week even if the Clips suck…..lol)

  • neaorin

they said the winning bid was just over two million, which makes sense. Gives them some additional flexibility with moves.

  • Yesse

I kinda wanted to see him in a Laker uniform. Anyways, he is coming to LA.

  • Mike From Spain

Eric Bledsoe could be a good fit for the Lakers, they need an athletic PG for defense. Right now they have Blake and Fish (duh). What do you think?

  • ab40

I think they should let all the trade rumors around cp3 and Dwight fall, New Orleans wants to big a package for Paul and there isn’t a package big enough for Dwight, the lakers will be depleted if they trade both gasol and bynum for him, plus they wanna see how bynum his knees hold up.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

If I were Chris, I’d say the hell with it, I’ll stay in NOLA for 66 games and then go wherever I want to go. The Mavs, among others, will have room. Make Stern look really stupid.

  • Uktom

This is a terrible aquisition for the clips, his attitude and arrogance will be a disruption in preseason and the locker room. They can’t move him on and it’s wasted space of they waive him, another terrible move by the clips front office. Need to replicate the OKC template if they want any success.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

If the Clippers can resign DeAndre Jordan they will have a better chance of winning the west than the Lakers will at this point. LOL

  • Justin

Once again another player trying to bully their way onto a contender. What a joke! I’m glad he ended up on the Clippers even though I like that team. They aren’t contending for the next few years though. And Cheryl, you wouldn’t say the hell with it and play it out if you remember that by doing so you lose $30M. You’d want to be traded pretty quickly

  • Justin

And btw, who says they are a leader but it’s all about me?
