Dirk Nowitzki: Mavericks ‘Look Old and Slow and Out of Shape’

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

The defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks are 0-2 to start the season, losing in ugly fashion both nights (by a combined 33 points.) The defense and offense look out of sync, and it’s clear that the dramatically-altered Mavs roster has yet to build the necessary chemistry to ensure success.

Dirk Nowitzki didn’t mince words when talking about what his team looks like following last night’s loss to the Denver Nuggets, but he’s not ready to push the panic button just yet.

From the Dallas Morning News:

“We look old and slow and out of shape — a bad combination,” said Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 20 points and sat out the entire fourth quarter for a second straight game, yet another indication of how bad things are going. “I still think this team has a lot of potential. But we have to turn the corner.” The Mavs trailed by 33 in the third quarter, a day after being down by 35 in the third quarter against Miami. Counting a pair of preseason games against Oklahoma City, Dallas has been behind by at least 23 points in every game since being crowned champs. There are plenty of reasons to choose from: an overhaul of their rotation, the shortened training camp and other teams being motivated to take them down.

“We’re not comfortable with each other on both ends of the floor,” Shawn Marion said. “We’re trying to get acclimated and you can tell it’s not flowing the way it should be and there’s going to be some bumps.” The challenge for coach Rick Carlisle is finding the right combination of players. He’s trying to squeeze in Lamar Odom, Vince Carter and Delonte West to replace Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea and others, all with little practice time. Carlisle already has seen a lack of trust on defense, and that throws everything else out of whack. “We’re going to recharge tomorrow, have a hell of a practice on Wednesday and then we’ve got to go up to Oklahoma City and we’re going to have to play a lot better,” Carlisle said. “I’ve got a lot of work to do.”

In addition to players still learning head coach Rick Carlisle’s system, it doesn’t help matters that they have to figure it all out while playing a compressed schedule. Things could potentially remain ugly in Dallas for quite a bit of time.

And it doesn’t get any easier for the Mavs, as they travel to Oklahoma City for their next game on Thursday night, with the spectre of starting the season at 0-3 hanging over the team.

    Word, its pretty much true.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Well, yeah. Having 8 players 32 or older will make your team look old and slow.

  • boboho

im knicks fan.to be honest, chandler and barea were the big loss for mavs.look at their poor defense on last match against miami plus they still dont find the chemistry of team, odom vc and west are new guys so well,.hope they find the chemistry soon.dallas deserves to be better.it would be great to see my team against a team like dallas, lakers, spurs etc.

  • Yesse

Yeah, i haven’t really seen Vince or Odom get a good grip of the ball.

They have been pretty disappointing too far, but if they acknowledge the issue now, they can still fix it.

  • T-Ray

Am I the only one who feels that missing DeShawn was almost as important as losing Ty and JJ? That guy went off in game 6 of the finals from deep and he is a pretty good on ball defender.

  • Aizen

    Captain Obvious…

  • The Truther

mavs looks weak.. theyll make the playoffs but as a 6th or 7th seed. Dirk looks really skinny! all that german beer mustve dehydrated him. Also there is no chemistry on their team, no flow.

    That’s a good list @bull22…

Dallas is a team, if everything goes as planned, that is built for the playoffs. If that doesn’t work out, they still have Dirk and cap room/assets to go after Dwill and/or Dwight. You can never count Dallas out, in the playoffs, or in makin moves.

  • Jer Boi

I think the nuggets are gonna win their division. The team is soo deep.

  • James Aka…

Ayo, who slam harder, Coldplay or Vince Carter

  • AQWORD

    @JerBoi = he he Ball Deep ?

  • LA Huey

Mavs are a contender but no way they grab the top seed in the West considering all their roster turnover, the shortend training camp, and compressed schedule. They could finish as low as 6th in the West but that didn’t stop the ’95 Rockets from repeating.

they have no penetration on that team. no inside scoring

Someone needs to get Paul Pierce’s big ass a wheelchair.

    Hi Vince.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Looks to me like Lamar really doesn’t want to be there. Of course he wishes he was still in LA, but he pushed for the trade he should still act like he cares. The first two games he really has just been going through the motions. Hopefully he’ll snap out of it. Sad to say but Vince has looked like trash. I’m getting old because all of my favorite ballers are falling off.

Like I told everyone over the summer. Dallas was a fluke and JJ Barea and Tyson Chandler and JET had more impact on the games that Dirk to secure their 1st ring ever. Dirk will choke this year and go back to his old form. All yall dummies thinking Dirk had changed or was a top player in the NBA from his earlier years of choking every playoffs. LOL, Its funny people was putting Dirk up with Larry Bird, how dumb was those ESPN anaylst. We need players to do things more than once to show greatness., Heck the Detroit Pistons won a ring and overrated Billups got a Finals MVP vs slow Derek Fisher. Billups the chucker and Dirk the choker, belong in the same sentence. Dirk were you doing all the shooting drills, ESPN ran over and over to show how good you are, trying to convince America, you are not a fluke. Dirk is!! BOOK IT!!

  • dannyb

Losing Chandler was tough but I don’t blame Cuban. Dallas was stuck for years over-paying for a center (Dampier) and it’s not a coincidence that they finally won once they got rid of that bum. Of course Chandler is way better than Dampier but he wanted to get overpaid and he is injury prone. Of all the guys they lost I’m actually most upset about Corey Brewer. He brought a lot of youth and energy and could have replaced the perimeter defense that they lost with DeShawn. They’re going to regret giving him away.

    ^^^^Corey Brewer, LOL

O.O ignore this guy above my post.

that’s my post, somehow his username was and email address was in the saved, “Name(required) Mail(will not be published)(required)” instead of my usual “Orange” i have no clue how this happened.

  • Dyce

The Seed, look at Dirks playoff stats except for that Golden State series he’s never choked in the playoffs. He’s always performed even if they lost. Even with Golden State it wasn’t that he choked offensively he just couldn’t pass out of double teams effectively. He’s done well in the playoffs way more than he has choked. You can’t even be serious.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

^^^^Check his record in the playoffs and how many first round exits he has had and great teams he has lost with. Stop trying to be funny. LOL

@Bull22 the bucks are in the west buddy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Seed – you are seriously underestimating Dirk Nowitzki, just because the Mavericks are 0-2 so far does NOT mean JJ Barea was more impact in the Finals last year. I’m with you on the Bird comparisons, but to say Nowitki didn’t deserve MVP is a strectch. Nice little rant though…

  • Cameron

Well they stuck with Jkidd….enough said

Somebody forgot that Chauncey got his Finals MVP by roasting Gary Payton (Fisher came off the bench). He forgot that…AGAIN. lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Seed proving his brain doesnt retain information. Good Work.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

^^^^Gary Payton, didn’t count that year LA Huey. Thanks nbk.

  • AQWORD

He knows how to motivate his teammates.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Man speakin of that, we woulda won that series with a healthy Payton and Malone. Kobe, Payton, Mailman, n Shaq is just too much for any D

  • SoCalHoopsFan

People writing them off not because they’re 0-2 but because of the guys they lost. Mavs aren’t the same team now that won the title, they’re worse. But if Lakers didn’t disintegrate, OKC shrink and LeBron actually played 4th quarters no way they win last year.

  • Gametimeweezy

Of course they are, if the Mavs were 2-0 nobody would complain that they lost their center and starting 2-guard. Obviously they are a different team but please don’t take away what they accomplished with ‘ifs’ and what could have been. Even though I partially agree… not sure why I’m defending Dirk I hate the Mavs lol

  • Gametimeweezy

All I’m saying is if you base everything off of the first two games of the season the Heat may very well go undefeated in this shortened season… hmmm

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

One thing you have to admire about the Seed… He never responds angrily to other commenters. His hatred is reserved only for the players.
