Dwane Casey Placed a 1,300-Pound Rock in the Raptors’ Locker Room

Taking the “Pound the Rock” mantra to the nth degree, new Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey had a massive boulder placed inside his team’s locker room, in the hopes of inspiring the players with the visual. From the AP: A 1,300-pound boulder sits just inside the front door to the Toronto Raptors’ dressing room, a reminder of the mentality the new coach Dwane Casey is trying to instill in his team. Heading into what Casey is calling a ‘building’ season, Casey has introduced a new motto: Pound the Rock. ‘I knew we were going to be a work in progress,’ Casey said of a team that went 22-60 last season and finished last in the Atlantic Division. ‘Every time we walked on the floor we were going to have to have something to get us to think about — how we have to get better, we’ve got to work to get better. It’s from a story about a stonecutter. Every time a stonecutter hits a rock, it may not break. You may have to hit it 100 times, but on that 101st time you hit it, now you crack the rock.’ The motto is written on the walls of the team’s practice gym and in the locker room. The boulder, purchased at a quarry in Thornhill, Ontario, just north of Toronto, is there to remind the players every time they walk on the court. They are supposed to touch it as they pass by and will leave every huddle with a call to ‘Pound the Rock!’ The meaning of the phrase goes back to Jacob Riis, a social reformer who wrote about the plight of the poor in New York in the late 1800s and early 1900s.”

The Raptors season opener was the most exciting thing I have seen from this team in several years. They might just have direction! And A LOT of size. I like Casey–and love that his team really seems to be buying in.

Not sure if Eddy Curry is the BEST guy to have in the locker room talking in these young Raptors ear.. Plus, how did he get out of his Miami contract?

I thought it was a symbol for Calderon’s contract.

  • Yann Blavec

Phil Jackson put Native American totems ( a wooden arrow and a bear claw necklace. ) in the Bulls’ locker room. It worked for the Bulls.

this is spurs stuff haha popovich got that translated for each and every one of his players and he preaches it every year. Isn’t the epsn something with a rock for the spurs? Get your own stuff you Guy.

I figured the rock symbolized Bargnani’s cap-crippling contract. I’m sure the bean counters at MLSE feel like there’s a 1300 lb rock on their necks when they want to bid on FAs.

  • Waskito

I think they need bigger rock

    Lmao ^ screw you

This guy’s in trouble. Look, the symbolism is pretty cool and all but it doesn’t win games. Phil didn’t win cuz of sh*t he put on the locker room, he did it cuz he had great players. The Celtics had there lil phrase but they won cuz they had 3 future hall of famers not because of their phrase.

  • Ryan

Yes I remember reading a story about the motto being up on walls in San Antonio which makes this pretty pathetic. Seriously get your own damn motto.

  • dannyb

They should start the rock at center. Couldn’t hurt.

  • Ohio Jones

Pound the Rock? Somewhere Dwayne Johnson is shaking in his boots. Better get that male hurdle out.

  • tomtom
