Dwight Howard Not Interested in Chicago Bulls Due to Marketing Concerns?

Bulls GM John Paxson insinuates that Dwight Howard and his reps don’t want him in Chicago not for basketball reasons, but because the Bulls already employ one high-profile adidas endorser in Derrick Rose (among other marketing concerns.) From CSN Chicago (via ESPN Radio): “We don’t want to talk about other teams’ players but obviously there are situations out there that you know that you have to look at,’ VP of Basketball Operations John Paxson said on Wednesday. ‘The other part of it is you hope those types of players want to come here. Sometimes, at least what you hear from agents, it doesn’t have anything to do with basketball. It has more to do with marketing and whatnot. Those are the things you don’t have under control when an agent gets involved and doesn’t even want to talk to you. All you do is keep trying, and we certainly will.’”

It’s because Howards Adidas contract is almost up. If he would extend with them soon then Chicago would jump right near the top of his wishlist

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

This whole thing is worse than Melo. Just trade him already, he doesn’t care about Orlando anymore (and y’all know I’m a Magic fan).

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If Caboose is giving up on Howard then he should be traded. There isn’t a much more optimistic Orlando fan around.

I think if howard and rose teamed up in chicago, it would lead to a big jump in howards sales. Marketing would go from howard and rose alone to both of them in ads together. their faces alone would be on every adidas poster. Commercials together. Plus come on, the clear cut best center in the nba teamed up with arguably the best point guard.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Chicago is Rose’s city. It’s never going to be his and someone else’s as long as he wears a Bulls jersey.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

If I’m the Bulls, giving up Boozer plus Noah is acceptable
    Including Deng is not?

    Do Bulls fans agree? Enigmatic?

  • Sean B

This is why I don’t like Dwight Howard. Is he really concerned with being one of the most dominant forces to ever play the game? Or is he more interested in being a mainstream crossover celebrity?

  • T-Money

nbk: meh. say dwight goes to chicago, kills it and wins finals mvp. who would still care that d-rose is from the chi?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Well, I mean, among Chicagoans yeah, Chicago will always be Rose’s city but nationally people don’t really care who’s from where so I could see them sharing the spotlight and getting equal love endorsements-wise on the national love.
Now let me say this, if this is true and Dwight Howard is letting his freakin’ shoe company dictate where he can and can’t go then that is just downright pathetic and in my opinion this would be just as bad if not worse than the whole “Decision” fiasco.
I mean, the way Bron went about announcing who he was going with was horrible, but at least his decision to team up with Wade and Bosh was more than anything else for Basketball Reasons ™ and not because an endorser preferred him to go there, because we all know Nike and company would have preferred he went to New York or Chicago.
I understand adidas basically has just Rose, Howard and Josh Smith left as marquee endorses but Howard needs to let that be adidas’ problems and not his. He needs to worry about getting with a team that  could compete for a championship, not what some German shoe company thinks he should do.
I swear, if he chooses to let adidas dictate where he goes, that’s just pathetic and we’ll all know Howard is more about money than winning.
I can just imagine him going to New Jersey and them never winning a chip, and then a 36-year old Howard on an interview saying “I wanted to go to Dallas or Chicago but adidas said no”
F*ck outta here with that sh*t.
@Overtime – I can only speak for myself, not all Bulls fans, but I think in a trade for Howard, trading Noah is a must because it wouldn’t make sense to have a backup center that’s making some $11 million a year.
Beyond that, preferably you want to keep Deng and trade away Boozer but if they ask for Noah and Deng you have to agree, cause like T-Mac said, “It’s f*ckin’ Dwight Howard.”
I think Noah, Deng, Taj, Asik, picks and whatever else it takes for make it work for Howard and Turk would be a great deal for the Magic and would hurt the Bulls in the short run but I would absolutely do it because Howard just turned 26 and Rose just turned 23 so you’d have plenty of time to build your roster back up with quality role players and depth.

  • T-Money

overtime: any package that doesn’t include rose is good even if you give up deng, booz and noah. rose-rip-brewer-gibson-dwight > rose-rip-deng-boozer-noah. and that’s the most extreme trade scenario.

  • Sean B

Someone really take my Sean B name? hopefully the lakers can swoop in before someone talks sense into Dwight

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

Dwight is making it hard for me to say he’s my favourite player…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

It’s not as much that Derrick Rose is from Chicago as he won the MVP, got Chicago back into contention, and he’s from Chicago.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Tarzan Cooper

I want dwight and deron on the same team. Plus quality role players.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    anyone but rose OR deng.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

    oh dwight….. smh

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Rose, Rip, Turkoglu, Boozer, Howard. I would trade away Deng, Noah, Gibson, Asik if it got me Howard. I would throw in any other player on the roster so long as I kept 1 of my shooters (Rip, Korver), 1 of my Power Forwards (Gibson, Boozer) and 1 of my defenders (Deng, Brewer). Other than that you can have whoever you want.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

overtime and airs done lost they damn mind. now we forgetting who dwight is? the magic could have anybody except Rose.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    i like that idea, nbk.
and i think they’d have to keep rip, gibson, and deng.
    thats GOT to be enough.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The thing is, Orlando won’t be trying to give up Turkoglu and take back Boozer. THat would be counter productive. So i would bet they demand Gibson. And in order to make that work and give up Turkoglu they would probably need to include CJ Watson or Kyle Korver (or both) to make the salaries work. Chicago would likely take back some combination of Howard, & Turkoglu, or Howard, Turkoglu, and (Duhon or Reddick)

  • http://bulls.com airs

    that almost decimates the team.
i’d be okay with giving up any of those mentioned, but to have taj, noah and boozer gone seems like too much.
@slick ric-im steadfast that deng needs to stay.
magic can’t get whoever they want, this bulls team is still a solid team that got to the ECF.
if the price is TOO high, why risk it and end up a midlevel team with a couple superstars *coughknickscough*

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

They would keep one of either Boozer or Gibson is what I’m saying. more than likely Gibson, because Boozer’s contract is just like Turkoglu’s, Orlando doesn’t want that.

  • Sean B

What the hell? I’m the real Sean B who the hell is this imposter?

From now I’ll be known as SB since we have some imposter around these parts.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

I could care less about keeping Rip.
And even though Deng has proven to be the heart and soul of the team, this is the same guy most of us Bulls fans were begging management to trade just 2 years ago.
I’m not gonna sit here and say Deng could be replaced, cause he can’t, but I wouldn’t let having to part with Deng stop me from getting Dwight Howard.
Also, Gibson might demand more money than the Bulls could offer him when his rookie contract’s up so they might lose him anyways. Same with Asik.
I like nbk’s trade, if only because the Magic would definitely listen if they were offered Noah, Deng, Gibson and Asik.
Play with a lineup of Rose, Rip, Hedo, Boozer and Howard and after the season, amnesty either Turk or Boozer, whichever one doesn’t fit as well in Thibs’ system.
Then look to get Nikola Mirotic from Europe if at all possible and he could either become the new starting 4 or come off the bench, depending on whether Boozer is amnestied or not.
From there, it’s just a matter of getting some good pieces around Rose and Howard again. Mirotic would be one, for sure.
After ’12-’13 $18 million will come of the Bulls’ book in the form of Korver’s, Brewer’s, Watson’s and if they don’t pick up his team option, Hamilton’s contracts expiring.
The Bulls could get some quality role players with that money, plus whatever the Bulls save from amnestying Boozer or Turk.

  • http://bulls.com airs

so youre saying we’re stuck with boozer?
way to ruin my day, nbk.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Someone prolly accidently posted as you. Don’t trip, the naming system is messed up here. Or it’s someone who isn’t a “regular” and has never seen you post. Which hasn’t been that much anyway

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

What I really wanna say is, The Bulls aren’t getting Howard.

  • http://bulls.com airs

couldn’t care less* matic. sorry, pet peeve.
i know, im not saying we need to keep the guy either.
but given the choice of rip or korver, i take rip.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Well, I mean, I really could care less.
I could say “F*ck Rip, that little Earthworm Jim looking motherf*cker”
That would be caring less, right? Lol

  • http://bulls.com airs

hahah! well i suppose you’re right.

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

They probably asking for Rose back, that might be why the deal hasn’t gotten done. Magic must be asking for a lot and I don’t blame them. Nothings getting done till closer to the trade deadline.

  • HOopER

and this is a perfect example of whats wrong with today’s athletes. More worried about money and image instead of winning

  • http://www.slamonline.com Tarzan Cooper

I’m still trying to fool myself into thinking dwight will sign with the spurs in the offseason, would be epic and bring many titles.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Tarzan, that would be kinda dope cause I would love to see Timmy end his career the way he started it, as part of a Twin Towers only this time he plays the old mentor role David Robinson had the first go round.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

what would make that really cool is how similar Howard is too a young David Robinson. Atleast athletically.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

@airs, you think the bulls would be mediocre with Rose, Howard and a bunch of average guys? I dont. Dwight is a dominant force on defense in every sense of the word(imagine him with Thibs) and we all know about Rose constant improvements, that would be a much better team than the knicks imo.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nimrod

    earthworm jim…
    that made my day
Have not heard that name since 1996…
anybody old enough to remember Shiny`s MVP?
    Oh that stupid pigs…

  • http://aol.com The Iron Lung

I was listening to the dan lebatard sho today and they were talking about this. Its about addidas. They only have two star athelets signed with them. And they are Rose and Howard. So they were sayig that Howard would be losing money from addidas becaause Rose is the main person n the company… I dont know about yall but i dont want that type of niqqa on my team

  • Sean B

Derrick Rose for Dwight Howard. Straight up.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

what is this sh*t coming too. I hope that isnt true.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

LOL so Adidas really does dictate where Dwight goes? He’s really spineless if that’s true. Sh!t, you don’t think other brands would be fiending to sign him anyway?

  • Ill Smith

Eff the Howard-Rose tandem, Howard-Thibs would be a sever problem for squads. But Im not sure cats understand the type of heist Brook…err, Jersey can pull off. The move from the bums in the swamps to the new team in the NYC bright lights is gonna draw the free agents & I think that’s what appeals to Howard. Sign Dwight, sign DWill, throw the midlevel at Ray Allen & everything else falls in place. Id take a Dwight-Lopez-Small Forward X-Jesus-DWill lineup over any team in the East except Miami…maybe. & you could still trade Lopez for some better parts.

  • Ballislove

DRose and Howard would make an awesome duo.

  • harlem_world

It seems highly unlikely it could ever happen, but give up whatever you need to except Rose and Deng. You have a line up of Rose, Deng and Howard – in Thibs system? That’s a beast of a defensive team. Fill in the gaps with a shooter and serviceable 4 and Bulls could go all the way.

  • Oh Nose

@Enig I love the idea of bringing Nikola Mirotic.

  • G Diesel

I think a Pau/McRoberts for Dwight trade is more than fair. Haha.

  • Darren

I think ppl missed the main point of this, with Paxson saying that he won’t talk about other team’s players and then doing exactly that.

Hey let’s remember, recruiting is not at all a bad thing, because it is a great great thing in this league if you’re the BULLS and only the BULLS, but recruiting has never at all won NBA titles, just ask the 2011 heat and the 2004 lakers.Building rosters through the draft, trades here and there through the draft or elsewhere, totally experienced veteran players and a little bit of cherry-picking from free-agency have always been things totally essential for winning NBA titles, just ask the 2011 MAVS and the 2004 PISTONS.GO BULLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gregory

Dwight is a clown he doesn’t want to win

  • Serigala

@enigmatic: I love that “Basketball Reasons ™ ” bit, you made my day, LOL.

  • Imstupid

Who wouldn’t love to see Dwight on their team. I’d love to see him come to chIcago and If we can get rid of boozed in the process it seems like a win win. But this is Chicago were talking about we don’t believe in spending money on good players only busts and old stars that use to be good (not just basketball). In all honesty the bulls don’t need him just like we don’t need Lebron or wade or bosh. Ross will have a ring before Lebron and Dwight
