Glen Davis Happy He’s No Longer Kevin Garnett’s Backup

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

KG and Big Baby had a fascinating, at times contentious relationship during their time together in Boston. And as far as Glen Davis is concerned, he’s happy that he no longer has to deal with being Kevin Garnett’s backup.

With the trade to the Orlando Magic, Davis finally got his wish to become a starter on an NBA team, and promises to showcase talents that he felt were stifled by the Celtics.

Fox Sports reports:

It often works the other way around. When a player joins the tradition-laden Boston Celtics, it elicits giddiness. But not for Glen Davis. He was happy to be leaving the Celtics. “I was really excited,” Davis said of hearing the news earlier this month that a sign-and-trade had been worked out for him to head to Orlando. “It’s a great opportunity.”

“Big Baby” played four seasons with Boston, winning a championship and almost getting a second one before the Celtics faltered in a Game 7 loss to the Lakers in the 2010 NBA Finals. But Davis was tired of being a reserve at power forward behind eventual Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, and sought to move on when he became a free agent. “My whole career, I was playing behind KG, and I don’t think people really were able to see what I can do,” Davis said. “The times that I didn’t have to play behind KG, I did a great job. Now, I’m (with the Magic), and I have an opportunity to be a starter, and I’m just embracing the moment.”

As happy as Davis may be about his new arrangement, it will be interesting to see how he fits in Stan Van Gundy’s system, and how he adjusts to a potentially even bigger role should Dwight Howard get traded this season.

I can’t wait until the first regular season game between Boston and Orlando, when Davis and Garnett will hopefully guard one another.

Ryan Anderson is better with Dwight.

  • lights out

Slam, you are awesome at twisting players’ words to get grabbing headlines.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com m cho

Misleading article — I mean, all he’s saying is that he’s happy he’s a starter instead of a scrub. Can’t hate on him for that.

  • Cole World, Make Way For The Chosen 1

didn’t he push the kid in Orlando when he hit that game winner?

  • http://www.gil1906.com Pve_2

Yeah, pretty misconstrued, but get those hits.

  • smoove

@NBK.. ryan anderson ..thats laughable…magic need a *power* forward…anderson is a point forward that lives on the perimiter just like softserve rashard lewis..baby actually bolsters there defense with his big body, he might not be that athletic but he was top 3 in the league in charges taken last season.. ……….ryan anderson …..

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you notice how they made the finals with Rashard Lewis as their PF? Yeah, Ryan Anderson is better next to Dwight Howard. I would prove it too you, but I assume, from that comment, what I show you will be to complex to actually make a difference in your opinion. You just rely on Glenn Davis taking charges to make the Magic better, that’ll help.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

And their defense is not what they need “bolstered” – especially if it means Glenn Davis is going to take space around the hoop away from the best rim defender in the league. It’s their offense where they struggle. (3rd in Defensive rating, 14th in Offense)

If I was afraid of getting punched in the troat after ever bad play that I made I’d be happy to leave too…

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    1) Cosign nbk’s first comment.
    2) Ryan Anderson can stroke the 3 but he is still a better rebounder than Glen Davis. Ryan’s total rebounds per 36 minutes, total rebound percentages, and blocks are far better than Glen Davis. Do you homework.

I expected to read this and hear Big Baby trash KG as a fake-tough guy or something. Thanks for the disappointment Slam.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

your* throat*, is as far as those dumb comments should go.

^ that was too anyone who has said something stupid. Including myself.

^I’m assuming you meant Ryan Anderson is better than Big Baby… cuz you said Dwight.

  • Heals

If doesn’t start hitting that 10-15 footer again he won’t be anybody”s back-up. Good riddance, he always talks about what he can or will do, but when the shht hits the fan he folds more often than not. To make matters worse he wallows in his own short comings instead of getting getting over it and moving on to the next play. To the C’s mentality it was an incredibly selfish and tiresome routine…

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

Baby says we weren’t able to see what he can do. In Boston, we saw plenty of it, and we don’t want to see any more. Selfish, immature, see ya!

  • robb

Dwight is a good guy, he won’t make him cry… Unless he leaves

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Damn Mutoni, you stay reaching with those headlines.

  • LA Huey

Remember when Dwight TKO’d Big Baby with that elbow to his face in the 2010 ECF? Remember when Dwight broke his own teammate’s face (Courtney Lee) the year before that? I can’t wait to see what Dwight’s elbows do this season.

  • Jay

Baby’s game is exactly as his name implies. There was moments when he looked great and helped the team, but more often then not I hated seeing the ball in his hands. Not once did I use Baby for my Fantasy team, and I used Bass alot throughout last season. Bass is just a more grounded and solid player. I wish the best for Baby but in the end.. Thank you Magic!

  • ARL30

I’m just glad that Glen Davis will be in a situation where Glen Davis can just be Glen Davis.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Yes, but in order for Glen Davis to be Glen Davis, Glen Davis must first find Glen Davis.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

Wait, who is Glen Davis again?

  • BostonBaller

Davis was fun to watch and I wish him well .. except when they play us. Loads of energy but Bass seems to have more of an overall game at this point.

  • ryan

yeah coz dwight wont make him cry again and magic provide him a galon of milk

I don’t know BostonBaller…I can’t recall Brandon Bass stepping up like Big Baby and hitting critical shots in big games during winning time. Big Baby was a good fit in Boston. As a Knicks fan I’m happy Danny Ainge is ripping your team apart with questionable personnel decisions.

  • BBaller

He should be happy, he’ll be the starting Center by March!

  • BBaller

    Potatoes for Potatoes.

  • BBaller

BBD only hit shots because every defense was leaving him open, as a pro Baller he would be expected to hit those open 17 footers.

  • ogog

@nbk ryan anderson is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sh*t

  • eZ

Magic better franchise tag this guy!!! Not 1, not 2, not 3 …

  • @iiightMrJump

Born and raised in Boston.. I am happy for “Big Baby”, when he was here he help the C’s bring another banner.. I wish the bro all the best

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

Wasn’t big baby trash talking about Dwight last year how he hasn’t changed his game since highschool, that he only has 2 moves,…?

  • dsleepy

    man…no love for big baby?

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Wow, I was reading the news today and noticed death of Glen Davis. However, it was just another person with the same name. lol. Go search “Glen Davis death” on google, you’ll see what I mean.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ niQ – not only is he dead, he was murdered!

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Marcelus Wallace

Title should have read: ” Glen Davis Happy he’s No Longer a Celtic”

  • ryan

this van gundy looks like ron jeremy

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

ogog – Glenn Davis is sooooo sh*t(er) — The magic and celtics just traded power forwards that they didn’t want. lol, Glenn Davis is not anything special on the court. The Magic and Celtics know that. Someday normal people will realize that, too, maybe…

  • trusoldier

only thing he ever did in the league that was news and really isnt was ask people to stop calling him big baby

  • bigmike100

see what you can do? all big baby is and will b is a jumpshooter and dats it nothing really amazing bout dat bro

  • ADAM

You SLAM people need to learn about media ethics. You basically wrote a title that is SEO UBER FRIENDLY, and controversial
Getit right, or get the F out

  • Sven

Big Baby is especially happy ‘coz he’ll get paid and not on a 1-year contract

    ‘Potatoes for Potatoes.’

Now he’s backing up Anderson, from what the Box Scores suggest so far. FTR, I think Boston got the better player in Brandon Bass. Better rebounder and a better role player. Bib Baby would be happy to be on a crappy team, just so he could start. Might get his chance if that big trade with Dwight finally goes down.

  • UltimaCarta

I’d rather be backing up KG than Ryan Anderson.

    Poor guy.

  • ClydeSays

Bass looks like the better of the 2 right now. The both have a decent elbow jumper, but Bass fights for boards inside & defends consistently. Baby knows how to take charges, but checks out if he isn’t getting fed the ball every few possessions…

As happy as Davis may be about his new arrangement, it will be interesting to see how he fits in Stan Van Gundy
