Jeff Green Out for Season With Heart Problem

by Ryne Nelson / slaman10

The rumors of Jeff Green having a heart condition were confirmed today, as CSNNE.com reports that the Celtics forward will miss the entire ’11-12 season.

Green’s aortic aneurysm will require surgery, but doctors say he should be at full health for next season.

Celtics forward Jeff Green will undergo cardiac surgery on Jan. 9 which will sideline him for the entire 2011-2012 season.

[...]

Green’s heart issues first came to light during a routine team physical on Dec. 9. At that time, an aortic aneurysm was detected.

Upon those findings, several follow-up tests were performed. And on Friday, a team of cardiac specialists were consulted.

From there, surgery was recommended which, according to team officials, should “completely repair” Green’s condition which would allow him to, “resume his NBA career next season.”

Good news is that the condition was detected before it turned into something tragic, and isn’t considered career-ending.

Boston will void Green’s one-year, $9 million contract, but the Celtics are still without cap room and very thin at backup SF/PF. The Cs will likely target a free agent—possibly James Posey or Travis Outlaw—in the near future.

    Really sad.

  • Ward6

Well, that’s your Perkins-n-Nate-to-OKC-deal Celtics, good job.

  • KevinWarren

Good luck Jeff. You are a class act. I’ll be praying for you during the surgery and look forward to your return to the hardwood. Take care of yourself, keep your chin up. Thunder Up!

i feel so bad for him.. he promised the city of Boston that he will produce but now… best of luck to you JG

  • Chris6

Better this than have another tragedy.celtics have already two in their resume (bias & Lewis), don’t need a third strike.green’s health is above the Game.sign Posey and dedicate the ‘chip to Green!!!!

I wish Jeff Green the best for a full recovery. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if OKC knew about this before they traded him. After all they got a really cautious medical staff there – they vetoed the Chandler a while back for medical reasons that eluded other teams.

Very sad, but Jeff is lucky that they found this before something tragic happened. Best of luck in his recovery.

hm. you wonder if this would’ve still been detected had the season started on time, since the physical would’ve been conducted months earlier. glad that this was caught, though. prayers with him.

good luck Jeff Green. get well man.

  • shutup

Hate to hear stories like this reminds me of Conrad McRae a young guy poised to do big things in basketball (i see you Brooklyn). At least the found it before anything tragic happened.

Besides the sad news, I would be excited to see James Posey back in action for the Celtics… Hard hitter right there.

celtics should rebuild everything breaking down for them the roster aint looking good, would not be surprised to see a first round exit, im not believing this year, should get a few first round picks for next year. i hope rondo stays or it would be another 10 year or so before we get back to title contenders

  • robb

Best of luck to Jeff I hope everything turns out ok for him.

  • ARL30

The Eastern Conference is just too competitive this year. There’s just no way the Celtics can beat Miami, Chicago or the Knicks in a series anymore.

  • Heals

On top of it all even though the C’s only had an outside chance at best of making a legit run, this season was going to tell alot about Jeff as player. He was going to be heavily relied upon this year and I was interested to see what he was going to make of it…

not good at all when it come to matters of the heart…get well soon kid.

  • Just Sayin

was really hoping to see him do work this season, anyways I hope he makes a full recovery from this

  • ryan

    all the best for him

  • Patrick

Does he really need to be out for the whole season? Seems really excessive to me!

  • Jose

The article Photo fits the situation. . of all things, an aortic aneuysm s DEFINITELY not something i expected. . .may he get better

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

The Celtics should bring James Poesy back.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    Damn.

  • Ooga

How come Vince Carter didn’t need the same procedure?

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    That’s bad..

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    Good point by lights out.
They voided his contract though, seems kinda harsh. Portland modified Oden’s contract after his injury but Green gets nothing?
These Nba contracts must have some interesting small print.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I think this is fair enough. Oden isn’t out for the season necessarily, Green definitely is. I wouldn’t mind the Celtics using their newfound cap space to sign Nick Young. He could be a great long-term addition and if they got a hold of Green a year on then Rondo, Young and Green could form an enticing group of players for Dwight to possibly join up with. Just spitballing here, but this could be a blessing in disguise for the Cs.

  • Heals

Naw omph, the only reason they could offer Jeff 9mil is cause he was the roster last year. They are too far over the cap to give anybody anything other than the vet’s minimum. So you’re right they do get 9mil off the cap, but unfortunately they really can’t do anything with it…

  • ripslam

Basically every one of their bench guys from last season (Big Baby, Delonte, JG) is now gone. Ainge is gonna have to pull some magical ish for this to work out. Add that to the fact that there’s one center on the roster who’s as fragile as they come, and it’s pretty harrowing to be a Celts fan right now.

  • Heals

I know Saber, but it’s just how the contracts work (he’s lucky he’s not an NFL player). Since he is unable to play it’s voided, but the C’s are pretty stand-up with players that show love back. They brought back Quis this year (I think people forget it wasn’t certain he’d play again either) and they hope do the same with JG next year…

  • Heals

Naw we aight rip, still got 1 during the new3 era and we don’t MJ making personnel decisions. Redz (love his game anyway) was hurt all year, Big Baby was just that, Quis went down, Luke and Erden only looked good because they played garbage time, no legit back-up point, JO and Perk injuries forcing bench players to start, etc. I totally agree their bench is paper thin this year, but last year was probably worse. Although that 7 games in 9 days stretch wasn’t on the schedule last year either, so the sad thing is they may need it even more this year…

  • hambone

must be something in that Bean-town water.heart conditions seem to plague that team

  • PAul

they need to rebuild they look old. Dont like it at all, they should trade for first round picks
