Kobe Bryant on Lamar Odom Trade: ‘I Don’t Like it’

When the Los Angeles Lakers traded Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks late last night, in what was essentially a salary-clearing move, everyone was stunned. Including Kobe Bryant, who told reporters at Media Day today that he’s no fan of the move. Per the LA Times: “I don’t like it,’ Bryant said Sunday. ‘I’ve known Lamar for a long time, and for the team itself, he’s meant a lot in terms of his versatility, his personality. He’s a big presence for us in the locker room, just from a team chemistry standpoint. He’s great at bringing guys together and things of that nature. I trust management knows what they’re doing. I let them do their jobs, I never get in the way but it’s tough. You’re talking about sixth man of the year last year. He played lights out.’ Odom, 32, averaged 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds last season. Bryant wasn’t buying into speculation that Odom’s off-the-court activities were distractions, including a burgeoning reality-TV career with wife Khloe Kardashian. ‘I don’t understand the criticism of [the] reality shows. I don’t get it. He had his best season last year. It clearly wasn’t a distraction. He played his ass off. I don’t get where that comes from.’ Bryant also didn’t like that Odom was sent to the Mavericks, who eliminated the Lakers in last season’s playoffs with a sweep in the Western Conference semifinals. ‘Especially to them,’ Bryant said. ‘We were supposed to come back and get them back, know what I mean?’ … The Lakers could try to package the traded-player exception to get a better player than Odom, but Bryant isn’t counting on that. ‘I’m not thinking that at all,’ he said. Bryant had one last salvo, which he said with a smile. ‘I don’t think Mark Cuban’s protesting this trade,’ he said.”

I really don’t know what to think about the direction this team is going in especially after losing Shannon Brown and Odom for basically nothing.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Mitch better have a trick up his sleeve. Still can’t believe they gave him up to the team that just beat them in the playoffs.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Mitch has something in the works, he must do… why else would he trade him?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

co-sign OTB, something good must be up Mitch’s sleeve

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Bye bye to the laker’s bench.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

…I think this is all on Buss….he’s trying to completely overhaul this franchise….Right now I think he’s trying to run Kobe out of LA and bring in a young superstar. Look it its gon be some dog days in LA…Hoping Kobe can just rest up heal up and BUST TAIL this season and really force dudes hand

  • BAYLORBEARS2012

I think its quite obvious why odom left… I mean Lakers tried trading him away last minute and that really got to Odom. Clearly after showing up to practise 2 hours late on the first day was a sign he is not committed to playing on the Lakers. This is completely David Sterns/the Lakers organizations fault. Team chemistry down in LA is completely messed.

  • Heals

Sherlock, even Watson knows letshannondunk.com isn’t worth losing sleep over. He’s one of those guys that thrives with low expectations, but underperforms once those expectations are raised (ala Big Baby). Instead be happy about Kapono (think about all the open 3′s Metta missed last year and put Jason there instead, of course Metta did hit em’ in Gm7 though, uggghhhh)…

  • CARTEL

Like Kobe said, Mark Cuban probably didn’t protest that deal at all…He probably laughed at the Lakers for being dumb enough to give up Odom…He fits right in and is pretty much ammo for Dallas…I thought Dallas lost edge by losing Tyson and Caron, but getting Lamar and I believe Vince, kinda puts them back in the mix…

  • kobesBESTfriend

im sure Kobe liked Lamar letting Peja scortch him when we got swept by Dallas…obvious his best days are behind him…im glad 2 see him go…overrated and overpaid…now he’s Rick’s headache…good riddance!!!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@CARTEL…mix of what?? LO ain’t keepin no bigs out the paint…..Dirk the best player in the game, but we all know he ain’t doin it either (unless he’s got duty on last years Pau Gasol). And at this point, if he’s not on a team that will specifically run some designs to get him cutting to the basket, VC is just a brickmason…Mavs tried to recoup as much as they could from Tyson bouncing, still a big time parting shot to their chances at even the 2nd round in my opinion…(I will never underestimate Dirk Nowitzki again however…I promised myself that after last year)….the Lakers on the other hand of this just basically just threw away a Championship piece for nothing…draft considerations…like what does that even mean?? anyways this is all Buss’s doing, infamous gambler…he’s shooting the dice with this entire franchise..

So these are the big moves?? Laker Nation..if d12 doesn’t come in to fold. This season will rapidly become a #epic fail

  • RussJones

Because he’s obviously an idiot. Who does that? If I was Kobe I would stand up and force management to bring in Dwight and Paul now.

  • sunshine

why would they give away lamar odom to dallas of all teams, yikes

  • T-Money

one thing is clear: kobe has no say at all about front office moves now. they’re basically keeping him in the dark on everything and phasing out his influence.

  • EtheKnickFan

Mitch musta found some 8 foot phenom while on vacation in some rain forest expedition.

  • ripslam

So they ended up not getting Chris Paul, and losing Odom and Shannon Brown for peanuts. If Dwight heads to NJ, some heads are gonna roll in Tinseltown.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Im gonna miss Odom but at least we still have Gasol and Bynum. Y not Barnes or Artest to Dallas? Damn

  • T-Money

right now the team is: fish kobe mwp gasol bynum / barnes blake kapono carracter… there’s just no way LA is not dealing still

  • vctmac

kobe shudnt of said tht cause he dnt mean it. he was hoping howard and CP3 wud join him. and since none of tht happened; hes beginning to say this stuff.
lets say howard and cp3 did join him; there wud of been no regrets of losing odom. tht being said odom gna make a difference wherever he goes. i hope odom decides to head to boston or chicago; and pursue another championship.

  • Hybris

vctmac, what are you talking about? Odom can’t decide to go anywhere, he’s stuck in Dallas for now unless they trade him. And Boston or Chicago to pursue another championship? Uhhh, what about his current team? I’m pretty sure he feels good about a title shot, since he just joined the current champs and all.

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

ha. t-money: it took me a minute or two to figure out 1. who mwp is, and 2. why you didn’t list ron artest.

  • Mburb321

Kevin Ding’s source says no way does Mitch trade Bynum and Gasol for Dwight, so that at least lets me know they are not going to gut the whole team to get him. Mitch def has a plan, he doesnt make stupid moves. Plus as much as i love Lamar we all know how sensitive he is, cant have anyone moping around this season.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Also, its not Kupchak who is doing this, its Jim Buss. He wants to cut all influences from the “previous” set of Laker teams and start anew and establish his own legacy essentially. It is why Kobe wasn’t briefed on the Mike Brown signing, why Brian Shaw wasn’t hired despite being recommended by all the players, and why Assistant GM Ronnie Lester, and a bunch of other scouts and basketball assistants were fired. They even fired long time employees for pretty much no reason. If Kobe did not have a “no trade” clause on his contract, I’m pretty sure he would have been on the trading block already.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

I’m just wondering if Jim Buss would be willing to part ways with Bynum. That man holds on to Bynum for dear life from what I’ve heard (mostly because it was his choice to draft him).

  • RunNGun

Odom out. Gasol is next. Then, Kobe to the Knicks…

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

Good for Odom he’s in a great situation now. Does he still come off the bench or does he start in place of Marion?
    pg Jason Kidd
    sg DeShawn Stevenson
    sf Odom or Marion?
    pf Dirk Nowitzki
    c Brendan Haywood

  • Drunyce

IDC how LAs front office may try to play it down. You don’t throw a bone to a rival team that ended you 3 peat bid to go on & win a world championship.

  • monkeyball

Dallas is in trouble after losing Chandler. Odom can’t start in place of Marion, because he’s not nearly as active defensively. The Lakers will be weaker than last year. Dallas will be weaker, so will SA. Meanwhile, the Heat and Knicks are loading up and boast two of the best front courts since the 80′s. Preparing myself for a few years of total Eastern domination.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Can you imagine if Jim Buss eventually used the Lakers amnesty provision on Kobe Bryant?

  • BBaller

Dallas maintain their 21 feet front court, Lakers must be getting Howard or Kobe will force a trade.

  • Ali

In Mitch we trust. lets hope dallas ends up with the first overall pick next year

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

Odom has already peaked. The Lakers know this.
    So does everyone else.
His desire has always been questioned.
He’s on the wrong side of 30.
    He makes too much money.
Dallas has a guy (Kidd) who may get another good year out of Odom.

  • BBaller

Why didn’t the Spurs stick their noses in? Odom would of been great for them.Mcdyess is retiring and the lack of quality bigs is rare.C’mon Spurs 12 days till Xmas( i mean opening day)we need upgrading!!!

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    Alright.
Kobe Bryant again proves that he is a fraud.
He says he never gets involved in front office antics. NOW he doesn’t…
He let’s guys do their jobs. NOW he does. Throwing Bynum under the bus.
He never really “got it”, in certain respects, you know?
    In my opinion.
I mean, What difference does it make, Kobe?
The bosses are going tod DO their jobs, regardless. Especially the Lakers. THEY blessed you with THE most dominant center of all time.
The rings. You’re lucky Jeffrey didn’t have him.
THE BOSSES blessed tou with Pau.
YOU were quitting in the Playoffs against Phoenix before Pau. Pouting, and what not.
Whatever. I love you, Kobe. Before The King, you were the one.
    But…

And so the 500+ thread begins with Philos shots…

  • Kent

Lakers will never be champions again because they are trading their great players

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

It’s all part of the plan……..

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

ESPN said Odom ask for a trade after the almost trade

  • Drig

Philo, Kobe has said that he would never get in the management’s way AFTER that video ( Just before or after they got Pau, dunno ) and has maintained that stance since then. This I’m certain of. And yeah, Jordan wasn’t blessed with Pippen or Rodman right?? Magic wasn’t blessed with Kareem or Worthy right? Shaq wasn’t blessed with Kobe and Wade right? LBJ wasn’t blessed with Wade or Bosh right?!?! Seriously, what kind of argument is that?! We lament that CP3 has no help and once he gets another superstar and wins 2 rings with him, we’d say he better be thankful for getting X or Y?!? Besides, this isn’t Jerry Buss OKing the trades right now. It’s Jimmy. Jerry kept Kobe in the loop while trading. Jimmy’s doing everything in his power to keep Kobe in the dark……

  • bull22

hilarious, buss so badly wants to separate himself from phil jackson that he is rebuilding this team into a basement dweller… hahahahahahahhahahahahahahhaha
