Lakers Send Lamar Odom to Dallas; Chris Paul Trade Dead

More craziness from the ongoing Chris Paul trade/no-trade fiasco, as it fell apart once again. So, the Lakers elected to send a frustrated Lamar Odom to their Western Conference rival Mavericks. Wait, what?! Yes. Obviously, this can’t be the last of their moves, right? Per the LA Times: “Two days after getting rebuffed by the NBA in an apparent deal for Paul, the Lakers sent forward Lamar Odom to Dallas for the Mavericks’ first-round pick in the 2012 amateur draft. ‘It’s a done deal,’ said a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly. The Mavericks might also send the Lakers another unspecified draft pick. It was not immediately clear if the move was a straight salary dump or a circuitous effort to try to get Howard down the road or, less likely, Paul. Next year’s draft is considered deep, but the Mavericks, the defending NBA champions, aren’t expected to have a high selection. The Lakers lost depth in the front court and a solid character in the locker room. Odom, 32, was the sixth man of the year last season after averaging 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds. He is owed $8.9 million this season and $8.2 million next season, of which only $2.5 million is guaranteed. The Lakers also received a traded-player exception worth Odom’s salary this season. Trade exceptions are difficult to explain, but the Lakers can obtain a player from another team by trading only a draft pick if the player makes less than $9 million. Teams have exactly one year to use a traded-player exception. Acquired by the Lakers in 2004 as part of the Shaquille O’Neal trade, Odom was disturbed to be part of the voided Paul trade and did not take part in practice the first two days of training camp. He showed up at the team’s training facility Saturday only so he could take a physical. A favorite of Lakers followers, Odom was not happy with ‘the way things had been going’ in recent days, according to a person close to Odom who was not authorized to speak publicly. Odom is, however, content to be going to Dallas, the person said, and received a welcoming phone call from Mavericks owner Mark Cuban late Saturday night.”

khloe and kourtney take Ft. worth/Dallas/Arlington just doesn’t sound right

  • underdog

Well, season starts great for the Lakers…

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

Now Lets get Howard and a serviceable foward

  • james

Cuban, Gilbert and the other small market owners decision to reject the Paul to LA trade results in Cuban’s team obtaining a key part of the Paul deal for almost nothing. Do you see a problem here? And imagine if LA fails to acquire Howard. . . .

Stern and stupid owners anger at the players is now affecting the integrity of the sport. In homage to Breaking Bad, if the owners can’t kill the season, they’ll make you wish they did.

Lakers have done this deal for a reason. I’m expecting them to get a big name in the next few days. Possibly Dwight Howard. Chris Paul will go to the Knicks next year (why you think NY only signed Bibby to 1 year?).

  • Ward6

send Gasol to the Hornets, Felton and Fields to the Lakers and Paul to the Knicks. LET’S GO KNICKS

  • underdog

@GP23 “why you think NY only signed Bibby to 1 year?” – because he’s old and he basically sucks?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The only way LA gets DHow is by trading both Bynum/Gasol along with some draft picks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@JTaylor well…yeah I think that’s probably what they plan on doing.

  • Yesse

JTaylor21, they just got a draft pick.

  • Stroshow

I think the Lakers try to keep Pau. A package of Bynum, the trade exception, some picks and Luke Walton’s expiring deal is probably still better than what New Jersey’s offering.

Dallas is building a veteran team that is able to compete again.
    I like it.

Wait gimme a sec to inhale enough….
    Nearly there……
    Any minute now…..
First Rudy Homesick, now this (albeit talented) Kardashian lapdog?
What the hell? Cuban and Nelson are gathering my least fav players in basketball on that team now?
Why not pick up Metta World Class Attention Ho while at it, guys?
(that’s the emotional reaction to this news)

  • http://nba.com GP23

The next few days will be very interesting.

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

we’ll give you world peace for Barea and another draft pick

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Now for the bball one: he’s an excellent forward, lefty, jumper, handle, rebounding, help D, passing swag (at least on the court) and adequate D. Obviously he’ll make the Mavs bench that much better and Carlisle now has an even better smallball lineup in Kidd, JET/Roddy, Marion/Fernandez, Odom and Dirk. Verrry potent on offense.
He’s a great addition, always a borderline allstar and Dallas plays a bit more uptempo than LA, which suits his style. He’s great in transition.
But GAHH, Rudy (who i’ve met and utterly despise) and the E! Channel in Dallas??
    Frackity frack…

  • hobbes

It doesn’t make sense if LA trade both Drew-the best center in west(when not hurt) and Pau-the 2nd best PF in west(behind Dirk) for D12. Keep Pau and sign Baron Davis for pinuts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@hobbes, ewwww no that wouldn’t worl

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

  • http://fivemag.de Speedy

    Relax , Darksaber, relax.
I hope that the possibility to play for a championship and show the critics what you are capable of is enough motivation for Rudy, Vince and Lamar.
I hope the Kardashians stay in Hollywood.

    Lol @Darksaber.

  • https://plus.google.com/photos/106403650426394352312/albums/posts davidR

good lord, that mavs squad is even deeper

  • https://plus.google.com/photos/106403650426394352312/albums/posts davidR

dirksaber, even though the mavs lost chandler, i think they did a really good filling his absence with all their pickups.
so what was the point of the lockout again? wasn’t it supposed to be about parity, and giving small market teams a chance?
so why did the league block NO’s chance at competing, but let odom go to the defending champs for only a late round draft pick?

  • eZ

Apparently cuban really gets a kick out of collecting older over the hill ex (all) star players who have lost their way matrix, kidd, vince, The wizard players, now odom. Opportunistic he calls it, but its like he’s holding a beacon of light in the dark and all the old disgruntled ex starplayers who are stuck flock to it…lol

  • eZ

Btw new york really needs to pick up stevenson, it would make their starting five that much more balanced and deadly.
He has great d and can hit the 3ball, a great compliment. I wouldn’t bank on fields and the rookie to anchor the backcourt

  • eZ

Rip to the bulls, stevenson to the knicks, billups to the heat, ideally dwight, crawford and west to the nets, cp3 to the clips without them losing gordon and jordan….Santa?

  • ab40

so.. hedo en dwight for gasol and howard? the man who averages the 15 and 9 for his career. For another mvp candidate and a 7 footer with the mind of an 8 year old. I’d rather see Dwight in Jersey for the next 5 years with Deron WIlliams and 10 fillers of which 6 good role players and some young guys. The lakers deserve to go down in flames after this debacle. Gasol will be injured after one month of in season play. eZ new york has no vocal guys and no real leaders like Kidd Stevenson will go buckwild again in new york and the media isn’t good for a guy like that. If the Mavs get Dalembert they’ve got a very solid and deep team

  • meloman2.0

Jr smith to the Knicks… make it happen

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

was an opportunity for Lamar to man up and play some inspired ball for once in his career….just don’t got it in him, happy trails….this seasons looking ugly

  • charliewinning

The Lakers will (unfortunately) end up w/ Howard but who knows if he’ll sign long term. Kobe doesn’t have much longer, and the Lakers aren’t contenders w/o Kobe being elite. Pairing up with Blake is more attractive in the long run.

  • ripslam

Butler and Chandler > Carter and Odom

  • Posterboy

@ ^^^^that has never happened ever in life, lol

  • Marco

Thanks for all the great memories, LO.
Personally, my favourite highlights of him are his and-1 scoop layup against the magic in game 5 and the double-double in a quarter against cleveland

  • Brando

I wish they still had lamar. He is one of the most underrated players in the league

  • DuckTape The Mob

Mitch Must Know something we don’t about Howard

Lakers having a HELL of an off-season thus far.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Mitch better know what he’s doing

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Yikes. Trading Lamar to a rival? Though this deal was undoubtedly made to get a decent draft pick to use for either the Hornets or the Magic…pretty sure Kupchak made a deal with another team already (in regards to the draft pick), otherwise there is no way he just trades the sixth man of the year for no reason.

  • way up north

@James from up top… completely agree, it looks bad. They should have made the argument that the paul trade doesnt make sense financially and not make it all about equal return or competitive balance or w/e cause the hornets are gonna lose him for nothing if stern has his way…
and a breaking bad reference to boot, nice work

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

I’ll miss Lamar’s patent dribble-the-ball-past-half-court-and-then-drive-hard-to-the-basket-for-a-lefty-layup move. He is going to come back STRONG with the Mavs though. That team is starting to get pretty deep.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Kobe’s apparent reaction to this was: “I bet Cuban doesn’t protest this trade”

  • Heals

Hey LAL fans Bynum and picks won’t be good enough to get D12. NJ’s offering Lopez and better picks. Question, who would ya’ll take in a series now given the roster changes? I’m probably crazy but if I had to bet I’d go with LA over Dal…

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Why would LAL beat them? Given the CURRENT roster, Dallas has arguably gotten better (minus the loss of Chandler – Barea’s loss is negated by the pick up of Odom/Carter/Rudy and Beubois), while the Lakers have only gotten worse with the loss of Odom.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

I also liked that Deron Williams called Stern a bully publicly.

Mavs are going to get Dwight Howard. BOOK IT!

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Man I’m serious, Mitch better make a really good trade happen to make up for this.

  • Heals

Oohhh forgot about Rudy, hmmmm, that’s 7 games easy…

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I think LA will probably give up more than Only Bynum and draft picks, they’ll give up Gasol too.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Hah, I liked Kobe’s comments about the deal: “I bet Cuban doesn’t complain about this one”

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

More Kobe: “I’ve known Lamar for a long time. He’s a big presence for us in the locker room, just from a team chemistry standpoint.”

  • #6marjons

for a draft pick? when did odoms value drop so much?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

What do laker fans do if Mitch Kupchak fails to get DHow? It seems like y’all hopes on this season depends on Howard donning a laker jersey.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@JTaylor I haven’t the slightest idea. Maybe we actually sign a decent PG r something. I really don’t know.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Ohhhhh man, the NBA sucks major sh!t for this. F*ckkkk

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

  • Heals

OTB – I thought LA underperformed greatly and Dal played their best (and continued to do so). Weren’t the first 2 games incredibly close, so I dunno, I believe the loss of Tyson severely impacts the front-court match-ups and Dal ability to rebound, stop LA at the rim…

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

salary dump? really lakers? how terrible. look, odom was a big part of the team. now they literally have no backup PF. good job mitch

Relax Laker fans, you still have Luke Walton.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I said this beefore, I’ll say it again, Mitch better have something good up his sleeve

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca niQ

Whaat?! Really? Odom for a Draft pick!? Were the Lakers really that adamant of getting rid of him?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Lakers fan to tha fullest, but stupid move

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Yeah it isn’t really a good move, and if we don’t get Dwight, it’ll be even worse

Dear Laker fans, GET READY! Sincerely, Shaq

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Wonder how much Khloe likes Dallas.

  • riggs

I hate the lakers, but theyre getting dwight. This move just smells of having ulterior motives…

  • LaKid

  • LeBryanNash

    LONG LIVE THE KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ riggs, I felt this was suspect too. That the Lakers GM had a deal worked out with Dwight already and that’s why he pulled the trigger, but I just read that Odom ASKED to be traded. They tried to talk him out of it and explained why they were going to trade him for Paul (like that needs an explanation), but he wasn’t trying to hear it. He wanted out. How incredible would it be if the Lakers ended up losing out on Paul AND Howard?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

From the jump this looks crazy stupid. Gonna hold out final judgement till the end. Let’s just remember, the last 2 times Jim Buss has been involved in personnel decisions he has hired Rudy Tomjanovich and Mike Brown. Both very questionable decisions, and polar Opposited of Phil Jackson. It’s hard to trust he knows what he’s doin

  • Jamaal87

Jim Buss is a known moron.

  • Riggs

@Omar: ya tu sabe I will be laughing!
