LeBron James on Shooting Threes: ‘I’ve Cut Back a Lot’

Through three games so far this season, during which LeBron James has averaged 32.7 points per night, the Miami Heat superstar forward has yet to attempt a single three-point shot. He says that it’s no longer his thing to consistently bomb away from beyond the arc. Reports the Sun Sentinel: “Through three games, and a very conscious effort, he has yet to attempt a single 3-pointer. Last season, by contrast, he attempted 279, an average of 3 1/2 per game. This season, James said he’s not even practicing them on a regular basis. ‘I’ve cut back a lot,’ he said. ‘I still work on it and still shoot it. It’s not part of my everyday workout, though.’ That doesn’t mean the weapon has been removed from his arsenal. ‘I don’t know if I’ll be able to go a whole season without shooting a 3,’ he said with a smile, as the Heat prepared for Friday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. ‘It’ll be those games where you feel real good and you’re shooting the ball extremely well, and that’s when you may go back to the 3-point line.’”

    Why is this news?

  • T-Money

why wouldn’t it be? the best player in the nba is altering a significant part of his offensive game. that’s basketball news to me.

He swapped them for backing cats down to put up the AQWORD looking (but effective) lefty jump hook thing he does now. I prefer it , coz i feel he’l own it soon.

That’s encouraging. Makes it easier to buy in that he’s going to use that post-up game. He shot way too many threes considering how average he was on them and how proficient he was going to the rack.

Very true, T-Money. Its a big deal.

  • Bt

Why would he shoot threes. Not only is he a relatively poor 3 Point shooter, but he can score two’s and get to the line for three point plays far easier. Seems like he’s just doing the right thing and playing the percentages.

la huey: i don’t know if you’ve watched heat games so far but it’s a reality now – he goes to the block early and often. he was abusing maggette on the left block the other night.

T-Money, I’ve only been able to catch Clips-Dubs game on Xmas day and highlights so far this season. What I read on these boards is my only reliable assessment of what’s happening this season.

i thought magnate was strong, but all he could was foul lebron. At least quentin stepped up and did his share of defence.

    cosign T-Money
He seems to be going to the low block early and often which makes them a more dangerous team. Before he used to just stand out on the arc holding the ball clogging things up. But now that he is on the block it allows for him to draw a double team and hit the open man for three or a cutter.

LBJ is actually giving himself a better chance to increase his scoring average by taking less 3s. No need to settle for 3s when you have the body, talent and skill set of LBJ. I agree with “Bt”…its suited better to pay inside the 3 point arc. Let Miller, Jones, Cole, Chalmers and Battier get paid for shooting 3s!

  • stlheatmaniac

hes more effective inside the arc which will make defenses crowd the interior making it real easy for the sharp shooters to knock down those wide open 3s

That’s a hard thing to do. Shooting 3′s is fun. Good for him.

He gets 3s under the hoop now.

  • LA Huey

co-sign LakeShow, playing in the post is not fun. Kevin McHale would say something to the effect of playing in the post is having an elbow in your back and a knee up your rear.

Makes him a more effective player imo.

  • DJR

He’s setting himself up to become a 4. Once he loses some of his explosive abilities in 3-5yrs he’s gonna need a solid post game.

    DJR true dat

although i dont like lebron (but i have tons of respect for him) this is a good move, he can just get 3pts the old fashion way
