Mike D’Antoni: Knicks are Title Contenders, ‘Obviously’

Head coach believes that he now has a good enough roster in New York to seriously challenge for an NBA championship (d’uh!) ESPN reports: “New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni thinks his team can ‘obviously’ contend for an NBA title this season. D’Antoni believes that the front line of Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler turns the Knicks into a championship contender. ‘If you have a center from the defending champions on your team that’s 28 years old and is playing the best basketball he’s ever played and you’ve got two superstars in [Carmelo Anthony] and [Amare Stoudemire], obviously you’ve got to compete for a championship,’ the coach said. With Anthony and Stoudemire in tow, the Knicks made the playoffs for the first time in six seasons last year. They were swept by the Boston Celtics. The franchise has not won a playoff game since 2001, and they haven’t won an NBA title since 1973. D’Antoni stopped short of guaranteeing this year’s team will end the title drought. But the coach said he is confident that, with the addition of Chandler, the Knicks should at the very least be “one of the top teams in the league. I can’t sit here and say, ‘Oh, these guys are great’ and [then say] ‘No, we can’t compete,’ D’Antoni told Kay. ‘That’s not fair to anybody. I think our fans should expect us to compete. … It does take luck, it takes timing, it takes a lot of things. But there’s no reason why we’re not one of the top teams in the league.’”

with the addition of Chandler playing behind Stat it does add some presence in the paint. But the chemistry is the big key. They lose Billups (a great locker room guy) and neither Melo nor Stat play great defense. Offense wont be an issue. But can Douglas run the squad “all” year? And what about the bench? Gonna be a really exciting season…im stoked. WHERE IS “IAMORANGE4EVER”????

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Knicks should go after Andre Miller. Not sure what the contract situation would be like, but they should swing a trade. He’d be perfect.

  • http://Slamonline.Com nbk

No. Knicks will compete during the regular season, will win a lot of games, but will not make it out the east. Not with that roster.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    Shouldn’t have cut Billups.

  • http://skjflf.com Jukai

Ldub20: of COURSE Douglas can. D’Antoni turns all point guards into superstars. Look what he did to that scrub Nash!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

They’re one or two steps below Miami and Chicago. I think Boston is done now though.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

D’antoni is D’llusional. I want the Knicks to win it all as much as any fan, but we have to be realistic. No PG OR bench?! Douglas is my dude, but he isn’t a true point. Mo Evans just turned down the Knicks too. No one wants to play in NY for D’antoni for a mere 2.5 million. @ Teddy, Miller would be an upgrade, but after the Melo trade ain’t no way Denver is doing the Knicks ANY favors.

Backcourt and depth are my concerns with this team. Probably the best frontcourt in the L, but things are mighty thin beyond that.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I really don’t know if it was worth it to amnesty Billups. The Knicks could have gotten a cheaper defensive presence and kept a proven, playoff-tested point guard. Turiaf was not that bad. Chandler really does not do much for them offensively, especially without a freaking point guard to lob him the ball. The Knicks made a huge mistake blowing all their cap space on Tyson Chandler–and I like Chandler.

In a perfect world, we’d have Tyson AND Billups, but we could only have one or the other…We needed size more and Tyson is a perfect fit…Wish we coulda kept Chauncey though…That woulda TRULY made the Knicks chances at a ring a possibility THIS YEAR!!!

The Knicks X Factors are Shump and Douglas, and let me say this right now, I AM HIGH ON BOTH THESE GUARDS! Click my name if you don’t know about Iman Shumpert, who’s twtter handle is @I_Am_Iman. HEAR HIM ROAR MIC’D UP! lol

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Gasol/Bynum are still the best frontcourt in the L.

@JTaylor21, did you decide to smoke crack tonight? MELO-STAT-TYSON > Barnes-Gasoft-Bynumb

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Last time I checked you needed defense to contend for a title.

sounds like a man who is trying convince himself

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    I meant best C/PF combo.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    This guy is the worst.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

I’m PRAYING that the Knicks stay healthy and SIGN RAYMOND FELTON BACK next summer!!!!!! Then we’d be contenders… at least as close to contenders as possible…

  • EtheKnickFan

Never ever ever ever thought I’d miss Charle Ward this much.

  • RunNGun

The Knicks should trade for DeSagana Diop from the Bobcats and also for Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon from the Pistons.

  • robb

    Obviously you suck pringles man

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

RunNGun, who the HELL can we offer for all those players?!?!?!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Omar: I’m not sure if Felton will want to leave Portland. He’s got a starting gig now, and playing with Lamarcus Aldridge is just like playing with Amare–only they defend every now and thwn.

  • Jerome

    @Jukai: I hope you’re kidding.

Baron Davis cleared the amnesty waiver wire, so look for him to join the Knicks soon. Another player the Knicks will add, is Travis Outlaw if he too clears the amnesty waiver wire. I’m crossing my fingers Outlaw goes unclaimed. Outlaw can be an excellent energy guy off the bench, and he’s good in the 4th quarter during winning time. I think with the Knicks he gets his confidence back and shows the Outlaw we saw from 2007 through 2009…feeding off of the Knicks fans at the Garden, just like he fed off of Blazers fans at the Rose Garden.

D’Antoni is mostly the reason I hate the Knicks, Amare too but nearly as much.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

this team is uglier than i thought outside Melo/Amare(whom i still question as a duo offensively). I like Landry and I like Tyson on D, but everything else, yikes.

  • Justin G.

I want some of what Jukai is smoking

  • underdog

Cutting Billups was a bad idea. Chandler is overrated, without a decent PG he’s going to disappear on the offensive end.

@underdog No disrespect to Billups…I like him. I know what kind of leader Billups is on and off the court and I wish the Knicks could have kept him to be part of the ride to the championship in the Mecca, BUT it’s a hell of a lot easier to replace an aging poing guard of his caliber than it is to find a championship caliber center in his prime like Tyson Chandler. Both of those guys are leaders and great teammates too, so I’ll go with the 7 foot one center who played a pivotal role for the Mavs shedding their soft label in route to sweeping the defending champion Lakers, and winning a championship. People hating on the Knicks this off-season are jealous, but try to hide hit by sounding “objective.” LOL! Get this, I even read someone on SLAM say the Knicks should have gotten DeAndre Jordan…Really? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME…First off, Tyson is better. Second, HOW IN THE HELL DO THE KNICKS GET HIM? The Clippers would have matched him, and then the Knicks would be standing with nothing but ish in their hands and cap space. The main reason the Knicks even had an opportunity to land a frontcourt stud like Tyson, was because Marc Cuban has his sights set on creating cap space/wiggle room to land Deron or Dwight. THANK YOU SANTA CUBAN! GOOD LUCK WITH THAT DALLAS.

  • ab40

pure comedy he’s going to run chander and stoudamire into the ground. And now melo has lingering knee problems.

  • charliewinning

In the weak east it’s not that far-fetched. They’ve got some serious holes with that weak bench and no pg, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities for them to make the Finals. It’s popular for the know-it-alls here to hate on the Knicks but they play well against Chicago and Miami. The Bulls are very overrated to me. They beat the Knicks ONCE in the reg season, and despite their no. 1 seeding we all knew they weren’t making it out the east. NY gets hyped to play Miami and they can beat em if they play serious d.

  • LA Huey

Orange is right about Tyson over Billups. Tyson is a better player at his position than Billups and quality bigs are much harder to find than a quality PG. However, Rudy+ZBo+Marc > Melo+STAT+Tyson

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I think people are seriously overrating Tyson Chandler now. He had a great run in the playoffs, but he isn’t a Finals MVP like Billups. And as for their age difference, Tyson Chandler isn’t exactly a young man.
Finding a near-All-Star caliber point guard is much harder than finding a center like Tyson Chandler who rebounds, blocks shots, and sets screens with little-to-no offense.
Centers are hard to come by, but it’s the centers like Marc Gasol–the centers who can score AND defend, and actually post up–that are most rare. As much as I like him, Chandler isn’t a superstar or even an All-Star. People seem to be forgetting this. They threw superstar/All-Star money at him, which was pretty much the cap space they were saving for players like Chris Paul in the summer.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also Billups would have been cheaper in the long run, and the Knicks could have signed someone else.

  • ground jordan

As long as d’antoni is your coach, you’re not a contender for the chip.

  • short

Know-it-alls here to hate on the Knicks, but coming out of the East isn’t impossible. They played well against Miami and they’ll do better against them with Chandler. The Bulls are most likely permanent second fiddle in the East at best, and the Knicks almost swept them last season. Boston is done. It’s basically a 3-horse race in the East.

  • http://www.wfp.org/ Felix

From what I’ve seen, Iman Shumpert could be a star… Tyson Chandler provides alot of what they were missing… Don’t see why the Knicks wouldn’t contend… For what he’s not (supposedly not a pure point) Toney Douglas will get after people and compete… Douglas Shumpert Melo Stat Chandler could be a sick five

  • add

try gettin to the eastern conference finals first

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Shumphert was looking like a potential 6th man of the year in today’s preseason game and even a possible starter. But then again, so was Ronaldo Balkman, and you know that ain’t going to happen. Douglas looked a little iffy at PG. So signing Davis might not be a bad idea. Just pay for the liposuction and lets get it poppin’…

  • LeBryanNash

    Bulls suck.
    1. Heat
    2. Knicks
    3. Wizards
    4. Bucks
    5. Bulls
    6. Rest of East

  • idrees

they still only hav 10 players…

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

O, i know it’s preseason, but Shump is going to be a good NBA player. nice pick by the Knicks

  • T-Money

Yeh Shumpert showed me something. Then again, I was conviced Terrence Williams wiuld be an all-star cus he was ballin in summer league/pre season.

  • Allenp

Terrence Williams can hoop. He just lacks discipline.

  • http://www.ozhiphop.com/forum Daninobrown

Can you hook us up with whatever meds you’re on?

Wizards and Bucks as 3/4 in the East. Wow.

You can just tell Shump is going to be a stud for years to come. He’s smooth man. His personality reminds me of Billups. If it aint rough it aint right! lol

  • ClydeSays

They’ve got a shot, just like anybody right now. But who plays defense on that team? Chandler? Fields? Anyone else?

  • house

LeBryanNash: what you smoking dude?Bulls lower than Wizards and Bucks? lol…

  • whatevs

i reckon for the east top 8 will be like
    2.maybe knicks
    8.philly, bobcats or wizards

  • dan

the knicks wont be contenders as long as dantoni is the headcoach. defense wins championships, not run and gun basketball. especially not when you wear your best players down by not going deep into your bench during the regular season. i know he had to hire a defensive assistant but i have to see them playing real d first bevore i believe this

  • bull22

as much as i hate the knicks but this is the first time i agree with d’antoni
but it has to go beyond paper and show on the floor. my biggest question is
    can they play defense?????
