Pau Gasol: Clippers Were ‘Flopping a Little Too Much’

For the second consecutive preseason game, the Clippers beat the Lakers, and continued to get under their skin. According to Pau Gasol, the Lakers were mostly upset that their Staples Center neighbors were getting away with flops (*cough* Blake Griffin *cough*). From ESPN: “It was just a preseason game, so the result of the Los Angeles Clippers’ 108-103 win on Wednesday hardly mattered. Yet the Staples Center co-tenants renewed their rivalry with all the contentiousness of a playoff game. Things got a little chippy like they almost always seem to do when these teams meet. The physical play boiled over when Matt Barnes was called for a flagrant 1 foul for pushing Blake Griffin to the floor with 6:48 remaining in the third quarter. ‘I thought we had some pretty good fouls. I don’t know about the [flagrant], I got to go back and watch the replay,’ said Lakers coach Mike Brown. ‘Hopefully we won’t get flagrant fouls. What that does is gives them free shots and the ball back, but I thought we had some good, solid, hard fouls which is what we should do because we’re deep. So, if a guy fouls out, we got another guy that can step in and play.’ Barnes left the locker room before speaking to the media and declined an interview request as he was walking out of the arena, but Lakers forward Pau Gasol offered an explanation for all the hard fouls. ‘I think we were upset that they were flopping a little too much,’ said Gasol. Griffin seemed to draw the ire of the most Lakers as he received hard contact from Barnes, Gasol and Josh McRoberts on different occasions.”

Someone should tell Mike Brown having a large amount of equally mediocre bench players isn’t the same thing as being deep.

If you need advice on just how much flopping you should do during a game, there’s nobody better than Pau.

  • baller23

Gasol flopp more then anybody in the nba. he need to shhh!

  • R.Bond

    @Omphalos My thoughts exactly!!! smh

  • http://hajrazigic@yahoo.com Weapon E

coming from the flop king…… this wont affect the clippers to much

  • ClydeSays

Barnes & Gasol? Come on. They’ve mastered the cheap foul…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

^ I thought that was supposed to be a Barnes and Noble joke at first….

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Griffin does flop too much. So does Pau. So does almost every big man.
You shouldn’t be pushed down so easily when you’re 6’10, 250 but whatever.
Anyways, Ralph Lawler was cracking me up last night.
“Foul on McRoberts…who I’m told does not like his nickname, ‘McBob’, which is almost irresistible. He likes ‘Mac’…so I’ll call him ‘McBob’ the rest of the season.”
“And Griffin looks at McRoberts and says ‘McByebye’.”
“And here’s Ron Artes…oh no no no, that’s Metta World Peace….my bad.”
“Foul’s gonna be called on McRoberts again. McRoberts angry about it…he’s McMad.”
And that was just on a couple of possessions in the first quarter I just caught on this Lakers/Clippers replay.
He’s gonna have a lot of fun this season callin Clippers games.
    Good for him.

  • Yesse

Yeah, keep on complaining. I am a Laker fan, but quite frankly Clippers are the better team in LA right now.

  • http://SLAMonline.com GotHandles?

coming form mr. flopper himself. taking after those euro soccer fools.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

haha yeah I laughed at that sequence aswell Enigmatic

  • MaxIsNative

    Ok, Pau.

  • shutup

I dont blame the lakers for being salty, they wanted chris paul and their lil bro ended up with the prom queen, Blake is gonna have to get used to the cheap fouls, grown men dont wanna be made to look stupid night in and night out, by seasons end hes gonna have to punch someone in their face just to send a message or hes gonna end up getting hurt. The league can not afford to have C-list players (lookin at you Barnes) taking out their big box office draws. Blake will be an allstar starter (fan votes) or the coaches will “vote” him in, but he is one of the most exciting players to watch in the league right now.

  • mgballer

what has the world come to? Pau Gasol is complaining about flopping. thats comical. maybe he should go finish his doctrate and save the world with metta world peace.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I agree with Pau, but Pau should never talk about flopping too much ever.

  • The Truther

It’s PRESEASON.. Chill Out People. If you saw the game like I did… the Clipps were floppin like Vlade Divac gone crazy. I agree.. Pau does flop too so he shouldnt be complaining but just yesterday the Clipps were flopping too much especially Blake Griffin. LAL were down 3 and couldve tied the game but then Griffin got that super weak charge call. O and Lakers NEED to get rid of Metta World Peace, D-Fish and Walton like ASAP!!! and wtf Troy Murphy! like seriously Mitch Kupchak! McRoberts is Aiite…. its gonna be an interesting season! Its gonna be AWESOME if they meet in the Playoffs!!

This is so comical it should be a skit.
Coming from the guy who screams “HEYYYYY!!!!” while driving and long before there’s contact, just to be sure the refs give him the call. Playing on the same team as Derek the Flopper and Kobe the complainer?

  • http://leipzig-eagles.de/ Speedy

Pau should know it’s all about the refs.
Their are guys that call this an offensive foul and others would hold their breath.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Yea Blake caught them with a few good ones, Pau early on and Matt Barnes later at the end… but that was just good defense. The Clippers bench actually owned the Lakers bench for those 2 games.

  • Heals

I thought it was more quick whistles than flopping and I guess Pau didn’t see LBJ jump and slide 20ft after Q gave him a a little elbow. C’mon now that’s weak especially from a guy insinuating he could play in the NFL. Anyway I thought the Clips were also doing it to irk LAL (i.e., Barnes, McRoberts and Pau) after they tried a couple “hard” fouls on the Clips…

  • mgballer

@truther what LA team did Vlade play for? lol the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I’m going to say something that will not be taken well and I will be viewed as a hater and a stupid Laker homer and all the good stuff… But is Blake kinda quickly turning into a douche? Now don’t get me wrong. When your Blake Griffin you should play with a chip on your shoulder and you should know you are a bad bad man, but he just kept on acting like he was “THE SH*T” last night. Now, he is the sh*t, but I just wish he would have kept that humble quality about him that he played with last year. Something about a guy that facializes that hell outta a dude and then just runs back to the other side of the court without talking, staring, laughing etc. I was diggin on the player and the dude last year. Now it’s just the player I admire. He’s already given refs and players more guff in the first few pre season games then he did all last year… It’s whatever though. Keep going HAM Blake.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Marcelus Wallace

He might lose his LA privelages if he keeps that weak D up.

  • Heals

Lake, I dunno I need to watch him more this year and see how he reacts with the team success, but there is definitely something there. Is it the LA v LA thing cause it’s happened between him and them last year (that’s what I think so far), is it the 110% (cliche, but true) all the time that he just gives naturally and all the time but could be interpreted as showing up, is it all the attention, is he just a a$$? I dunno…

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Right heals. I dunno. I definitely am down to give him the benefit of the doubt for now. It was just so noticeable because of his calm demeanor he had last year is now certainly gone. It remains to be seen if he turns into Kenyon Martin 5.0 or not. Hopefully he just keeps yamming on MoFo’s then getting back and realizing he needs to start playing D. Flopping only gets you so far… unless your Side Show Bob of the Cavs and you get a contract for it.

  • ChipS

The Mo Williams flop did it for me…. I’m not even a Laker fan. As exciting as the Clippers will be, they will be as equally annoying!

  • BBaller

Flopping should be met with a Technical. It is the biggest disease in the game right now. That’s why i don’t like Euro football anymore. Players falling down like they have been hit by a truck only to get up again in 10 seconds.C’mon players take a charge like a man, don’t use it to cheat the game.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

A team full of world class floppers like Gasol and Fisher are complaining about someone else flopping?

  • alekesam

Yeah, that Mo Williams flop was the second coming of Chris Bosh.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

When someone else masters the unstoppable move that you had all season you become irrelevant. I can see why they want to move him to the East (Gasol).

  • BBaller

As a Spurs fan i can’t argue this , Ginobili is one of the biggest floppers out there. I even scream when he does it, i just hate it. It did not exist in the 90s so why is is it so prevalent now. More Euros i think! Cheat at any cost.

  • capers8

I love that this is turning into a pretty serious rivalry. Linked this at my site http://www.thepowerwire.com
