Chris Paul-to-Lakers Trade Hits Snag, Won’t Go Through

Earlier today, the Internet exploded when news broke that the Hornets were trading Chris Paul to the Lakers in a three-team trade that’d also move Lamar Odom, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola and Goran Dragic to New Orleans and Pau Gasol to Houston. Well, looks like the deal has hit a bit of a snag. Here’s Yahoo!‘s latest report: “NBA commissioner David Stern has killed the New Orleans Hornets’ trade of Chris Paul after several owners complained about the league-owned team dealing the All-Star point guard to the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Some owners pushed Stern to demand that trade be nullified, and the Hornets be made to keep Paul on the roster for the foreseeable future, sources said. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was one of the most vocal in a chorus of owners irate with the belief that the five-month lockout had happened largely to stop big-market teams from leveraging small-market teams for star players pending free agency. All the players involved in the trade have been told to report to their teams for the start of training camp on Friday. Before Stern intervened, the Lakers had reached an agreement to acquire Paul in a three-team trade that would have cost them Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Under terms of the deal, the Lakers would have sent Gasol to the Rockets. The Hornets would have received Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola, league sources said.”

    Amazing.
So all that nonsense and rhetoric during the lockout and this is the result?
Darth Stern pulling a palpatine and nixing a trade because a group of owners feel cheated?
This league has some serious problems.
Nevermind trading 2 of your 3 best frontcourt players away to get Paul. (Pau might have reverted to being soft last playoffs but LA can’t seriously think Bynum is the better player…)

  • OTB

“”In the end, David (Stern) didn’t like that the players were dictating where they wanted to go,” source says.”
Chris Paul is a free agent in 8 months. What. The. F@!k.

  • Mariano

Why didn’t they do this when the Pau trade happened?

  • OTB

I know I was all for the owners doing the lockout and vehemently was against the “plant worker” comments, but THIS is really not helping the NBA’s case.

  • LakersFan

NBA has some serious problems, WTF man, they already had a deal, lakers already sacrificed their dynamic duo inside. but NBA cancelled the DEAL?? are you serious bro????????

  • O

The NBA owns the Hornets, so ultimately, even if Paul lawyers up, can anything be done? It’s not like Stern stopped another owner from trading a player. He stopped a player on a team he basically owns from being traded.

  • Gee

The Lakers gave up way too much to NO and Houston. Yes, the NBA stopped the trade, but I think Lakers too had some regret.

  • robb

But I guess it’s GREAT for the league when a player like Tyson Chandler gets a 4 year and 60 mill deal right? I’m out. Gotta drink a bottle of NyQuil.

  • T-Money

O: this has nothing to do with the nba owning the team, technically, because stern can veto any trades he wants, at all times, for basketball reasons. but he doesn’t. ever. what was special about this one? why is worse than what utah got for deron? what memphis got for pau? if it is because stern didn’t want another superstar to go to a big market does that mean he vetoes a dwight trade to l.a.? remember that economic reasons are not mentioned by the nba – so what would be the difference? this smells really bad.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Is the CBA even legit and signed yet?
Bet CP3 wishes they hadn’t agreed to the tentative deal now…

  • T-Money

    RealLamarOdom LAMAR ODOM
When a team trades u and it doesn’t go down? Now what?

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    Damn.
Not too long ago, Jukai tried to make me look like an ass when I (YES I) was THE first to advocate Paul to the Lakers.
Well, I guess I was not the only one to think that that was a good idea.
    But anyways…

  • bnets

    good for stern, good move

  • JoeMaMa

This effectively means that Chris Paul cannot be traded. The Lakers could likely sue the league should that happen; I’m fairly certain that a good set of lawyers could make the NBA look like complete morons. This also brings to light the fact that the league owns a team, and is screwing them through poor management. This was a really good deal for the Hornets. But Dell Demps’ trades now must pass muster with….competing teams?

  • O

Word?! I didn’t know Stern could veto ANY trade cause like you said, T, he ain’t never done that. @ robb, Chandler going to the Knicks isn’t as huge as Paul going to the Lakers. Seriously. Lakers are losing two good players and another aiiight player (if that). That team would still be stacked at the end of the day. Knicks are getting a good (not great) Center and probably losing a good starting PG and reserve center in exchange. And our bench will still be suspect! But yeah, 60 mil for 4 years seems OD for an injury prone center. There goes any money we’ll have for next years free agency.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

@T-Money, u should tweet him the following:
‘You pick up the phone and tell your boss, Kris Kardashian/Jenner-whatsherface where to send tge camera crew.’

  • bnets

Players should not be allowed to dictate where they want to go, good job Stern

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Stern gives us blue balls. Again.

  • Blasphemy

@bnets – Excuse me, but why shouldn’t players not be allowed to to dictate where they want to play?

  • http://dskflf.com Jukai

Well Philo, obviously the owners agreed with me.

  • sean b

Why shouldn’t players dictate where they want to go? I can dictate where I work. The Hornets are going to lose him one way or another, they were better off getting going the nuggets way and getting assets than going the cavs way and getting screwed.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

    this is so unfair

  • DuckTape The Mob

@bnets They don’t own the NBA players so they can’t dictate them….You sounding like a real redneck B!tch right now

at the end of the day CP3 don’t wanna stay with the Hornets and at the end of the season He gone……….so then what will stern Do?

  • A2011

Not a smart move. What if, Chris Paul leaves next year?? Who is going to want to buy New Orleans, now or never? The reason the deal was stop because Chris Paul is going to a big market team.

  • bnets

Chris Paul now crying like a little baby “waaa waaaa waaa Im not going to training camp”

  • Everynowhere

the lakers would have been worse off if this trade went through. if getting dwight howard isn’t a SURE THING, then the cp3 trade is dumb.

  • MikeC.

    Oh snap!

  • Cool Dude

What you guys arent seeing is that if this trade went through, the lakers would have gone 10m under the cap, letting them trade bynum away for cap relief and role players, which means they would have enough cap space to sign D12 in the summer even if the magic trade him to somewhere else.

  • MikeC.

@DuckTape – since the team owners and players voted collectively to a set of governing rules, one of which stipulates that players are contracted to deliver services to franchises in exchange for salaries, the league can kinda dictate where the players play. Unless those players decide to take large pay cuts in order to sign contracts to play where they desire. Part of the agreement is that players can choose to play wherever they want as free agents, however they must also accept large pay cuts. So at the end of the season, if “he gone”, then “he gone”.

  • bnets

We had a lock out for a reason, is good to see it come to fruition to not have players have much control this time around

  • andy

As a Lakers Fan im happy this didnt go through.
Id much prefer moving Odom and Howard to get Dwight Hizzy!

  • Heals

This was the widely overlooked variable in this trade equation. I understand their gripe, but it’s short sighted. This is a pretty good deal for NO, I mean they get 3 starters for a team that needs depth desperately. They have the potential for a Nuggets type run (the whole is better than the individual parts) with the shortened season. It doesn’t matter that the trade helps LAL, other owners need to offer better deals plain and simple (if he won’t resign too bad). As for LAL though this may be a blessing in disguise cause their real prize is D12. CP3 makes them better but not scary. D12 gives them (minus Odom and Bynum) a very complimentary front court duo with a lethal scorer at the guard position…

  • golakeshow

What the hell is this bullcrap. Stern is a loser who smokes weed. That is the only reason I can think of.This is the stupidest thing ever. You can’t block a trade for no good reason you fu#khead. Worst commisioner in sports history. FU#K THE SMALL MARKET TEAMS AND DAVID STERN!

  • Chuck-Dub

No worries, Laker fans. CP3 CANNOT be traded to ANYONE this season based on this development or the NBA opens up a huge can of worms. Dwight Howard to LA by Christmas, and we get Paul (who CLEARLY wants to don the purple and gold)NEXT season without giving up ANYTHING! It’s good to be a Laker fan – always. Why? Because it’s championships or bust and Dr. Jerry Buss is the best owner in all of pro sports. And, oh yeah . . . by the way . . . Jerry’s gonna’ take this blatant attack on his franchise VERY personally. That’s bad news for everyone else.

  • bnets

So your saying get rid of all the small market teams and just have like 4 or maybe 5 teams play in the NBA, kinda sucks for the rest of the other fans who support and pay 1000s a year to watch NBA games in small market teams suck as Utah, Sacramento, GState and Oklahoma City

  • bnets

    *such as

  • golakeshow

    Stern is doing billy hunter

  • ThaKidNoah

In other news Lakers and Hornets training camps start tmrw expect a lot of awkwardness

  • golakeshow

This is a bush league. Stern is a horrible person and commisioner. If I was in a room with david stern, Osama bin laden, and hitler with a gun with two bullets I would shoot stern twice. What a fu#ktard.

  • z man

Regardless of your feelings about the trade, this is B.S., the NBA promised autonomy when they took over the Hornets. This is a conflict of interest. They should keep their hands and big mouths (a certain Dallas owner) out of the business of others. Paul should lawyer up and sue the hell out of the NBA.

  • O

I know Laker fans are TIIIIIIGHT, but come on, man. The Lakers are the team that have come off HOW many times in trades? Y’all used to trading cassette players for MP3 players and no one stoppin’ y’all. Seriously, Y’all won how many championships in the last decade? Laker fans are worst than Yankee fans (i’m a Yankee fan btw). Even without Paul y’all still got a SQUAD! Y’all just need a younger PG.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The worst part about it is, the Hornets get a GOOD deal here. F*ck Mark Cuban for being a punk too.

  • O

Now Laker fans know how Sacramento fans felt in the 2002 playoffs. LMFAO!!!! Nah, Laker fans won’t ever know that feeling…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Regardless of how everyone feels about the NBA butting in, we have to remember one thing; the NBA currently owns the Hornets. So if a deal involving the Hornets happens right now, apparently it can be vetoed. Adjust your lives accordingly.

  • shutup

I always said i thought that Gasol deal should have been investigated, Jerry West is a shifty mofo, everyone knows he still has ties to the Lakers, probably got a hefty sum, under the table

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Im glad it wont happen, giving up Gasol and Odom would’ve been a big mistake
