Report: Clippers Close to Acquiring Chris Paul

According to the LA Times, Chris Paul may end up in Hollywood after all, but not with the town’s most glamorous team: “The Clippers and the New Orleans Hornets were working vigorously Sunday night to consummate a blockbuster deal that would send All-Star point guard Chris Paul to Los Angeles to play for the Lakers’ cross-town rivals, said two people with knowledge of the situation who were not authorized to speak on the matter. The deal hasn’t been completed, but both sides were in the closing stages of the negotiations. The Clippers would send the Hornets center Chris Kaman, backup second-year guard Eric Bledsoe, second-year forward Al-Farouq Aminu and the No. 1 draft pick they got from the Minnesota Timberwolves that is unprotected in the 2012 draft, considered to be one of the best in recent years. Clippers owner Donald Sterling and the NBA have to sign off on the deal. A package from the Lakers for Paul was turned down by the league. The NBA will probably review the Clippers deal Monday.”

The Clippers aren’t any closer to a chamiponship with CP3 on board. There’s no way the get past the Thunder.

  • Riggs

clippers better get okafor back because they have no centers if they do that right?

  • mytiman

What’s surprising about this one is that the Clippers traded both Eric Gordon and Minnesota’s pick, which is #1 in the 2012 Draft that is full of talent.

  • Randy Brown

There’s two versions of this trade doing the rounds, one with Eric Gordon and one without

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Riggs, I believe they are matching DeAndre Jordans offer sheet. Not 100% sure though

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

I’m not big on LA but I’m fine with this. For Paul, he has Holywood, Blake, and Eric. Sounds good. He would sign there in the future I think. With CP3 they could turn instantly to a middle-of-the-pack playoff team, barring injuries.. and a legit contender in the near future provided Sterling doesn’t screw up and Vinny isn’t the coach.

  • YoLu

    @mytiman
Bledsoe not Gordon. And the T-Wolves still have to earn that pick with some awful basketball and luck. There are definitely a few other teams that will give Minny a run for their money.

  • AD

with eric gordon…. their one of the top teams in the west if they can stay healthy without gordon…..

  • Derek

Didn’t Bledsoe just get hurt.they said he tore something and is going to be out for 6-8 weeks.(I Think)

  • tavoris

Paul, Gordon, Butler, Griffin, and Jordan = most athletic/skilled/talented team in the west.

  • http://www.kittywildeonline.com RunNGun

Chris Paul and the BLAKE SHOW… ah, make it happen, Sterling!

  • Bt

Id rather martin, scola, odom and dragic. This is a terrible trade for new Orleans for all reasons, especially basketball reasons

  • YoLu

The NO roster with this trade is worse right now than the LAL trade, but the LAC trade has more potential and is probably more enticing to a green owner. Aminu can be a solid starter for years and Bledsoe has shown promise. Kaman has the expiring contract and the Wolves pick should equal a future star. It all makes for a blank canvas with lots of paint that the league hopes will attract some buyers.

  • robb

Bt is right. Stern f*cked them good. @tavoris Jordan just signed with Golden State.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

Can someone explain how the hell this they can justify Stern not VETOing this but VETOing the other deal? Beyond stupid

  • Lew alcindor

@robb: jordans offer can be matched.

  • jake

Greaaaaaaaaat… Just the way i like to start my mondays. Wtf is happening!!! My lakers get no one, still lose two important contributers and their building sharing, step brother neighbors snatch a hof point guard. Im calling in sick to pout all day. This is bogus, I hate you David Stern.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Overtime, because stern wanted young players and picks, and in the Lakers deal they were offering old players with big salaries and worse picks

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

he still never should have veto’d the first one. It was stupid. But that why I don’t think he will veto this one.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

Cmon now, Stern blocked that trade because of the Owners whining. The deal that the Hornets would have gotten was more than good. The owners complained because they thought the Lakers were going to be building a super team.
So how can any All-Star ever getting traded to another team with an All-Star ever be allowed again? This is what annoys me so much about the Stern block

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

lol im not justifying it at all.. I was in shock when it happened. Im just going by what stern said/is going to say.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

lol im not justifying it at all.. I was in shock when it happened. Im just going by what stern said/is going to say.

  • robb

@Lew alcindor true but if the Clippers sign Paul can they still match GS’s offer?

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

    @robb, yes

  • robb

    f*ck!

  • vctmac

cp3 might go to clippers, and lakers will make a run after him with some cash considerations as CP3 wont change things overnight.
as for the clippers, cash considerations, draft picks and other pieces are acceptable as they need to rebuild… they not in any place to contend anything but last place lol.

  • Stroshow

You can’t call the Lakers and the Clippers “cross-town rivals”. They play in the same building.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

@Megatron, Im not calling you wrong, I’m saying what he says is complete rubbish. And he shot himself in the foot with it

  • neaorin

If this trade goes down it will make a lot more sense for the Hornets than the Lakers one. That unprotected Minny pick alone is better for them than those old overpaid guys. The Hornets would have a worse team for this season at least, but that only means their own pick in the most loaded draft in a decade is gonna be higher as well.

  • neaorin

And with CP3, Griffin, Gordon, DeAndre Jordan, the Clippers will actually be scary… but since they’re the Clippers, you kinda expect for something bad to happen.

  • LA Huey

I thought Chris wanted to win.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

….Chris Paul has to be sooooooooo heated right now…smh. The Clips were a respectable option, lotta talent but he’s still now in a position where he has to lift a squad on his back…not to mention a squad with a terrible coach…smh, no better off than he was in New Orleans as far as competing for rings goes….I feel for him man, must be too heated at Stern….smh

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@LA Huey…he did, Stern didn’t want him to though

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

If this trade goes down, it’s much better for the Hornets than what was offered by the Lakers/Rockets. As a rebuilding team you crave a young potential superstar like Gordon, and a top pick in the deep upcoming draft is amazing. This could get the Hornets back on their feet by next year. As for the Clippers: it’s a risky move, even with Paul picking up the option on his contract, but you gotta go for a superstar of Paul’s calibre when he’s offered. Seeing Paul work with Griffin will be awesome. Those two guys can headline a championship team in a couple years, and what more can you ask for than that?

  • RunNGun

I’m down for this trade… especially that unprotected MINNY pick. Harrison Barnes or Perry Jones next to the BLAKE SHOW and CP3? Wow…

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

we can go up and down the Clips roster and projected starting 5 and talk about how young, and athletic, and scary the ‘can’ be out West…this is paper, too many atimes we as basketball fans get too caught up in whats on paper (and I’m not frontin like I don’t do it myself)…championships aren’t won on paper, games aren’t won on paper. Coaching, defense, heart, chemistry, a group of guys with experience and competency to play GOOD team basketball for 48 minutes….thats what does it. Its going to be a building process this year…bottom-feeder to champion simply isn’t possible in one year. I’d count it a great accomplishment if this squad even makes the playoffs this year let alone advance. Either ways wishing CP3 nothing but the best

  • BhCommander

I’m saying it because it must be said: Stern is an awesome GM. Yes, he’s a douche-bag, but show some love to the man’s managerial skills. This trade is so much better than the Lakers deal — lots of youth, lots of talent, 3 potential all-stars (Kaman, Gordon, Minny #1 pick). He actually got nearly equal value for a superstar.

  • neaorin

Um, the Lakers have a new coach, with a new system, and they would’ve changed half their roster if they were to get Chris Paul, and possibly Dwight. Not exactly championship ingredients there either. At least for this season. If the three amigos down in Florida couldn’t do it, then we know it’s pretty darn hard.

  • https://plus.google.com/photos/106403650426394352312/albums/posts davidR

neaorin, are the blazers more cursed than the clippers?

  • jsmallz

This is not bad. Course they arent gonna win a championship this year or ther next or maybe not even the one after that. But with this you got blake with paul. So to speak when you try to get other players its a prospect. Its not the lakers but hey this makes the team strong. Dont verget they have tons of cap space even with chris paul. This is a good move

  • Chris C

I wouldn’t trade all those players an that pick for Paul. He is a great player but is injury prone and has no cartilage in one knee already. Maybe its because im a blazer fan but no cartilage in knees really scares me lol.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@neaorin firstly Mike Brown ain’t running nothing, and he never has. This is Kobe’s team unless orders from the top *looking at you Jerry* say otherwise. Now the 3 amigos and Spoelstra combined on their best day don’t have the basketball IQ of CP3 and Kobe…oooh it hurts, well its just facts. Heat lost cause they simply don’t know how to play good team basketball, PERIOD. And if Rondo never got injured they woulda lost earlier. Thats coming from a dude who roots for them guys….now you take Kobe and CP3, two of the fiercest and most astute competitors in the history of the league, and throw in Dwight and you’ve got yourself enough to beat absolutely anyone…Beijing all over again.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Clippers about to become the HOT ticket at the Staples Center.

  • neaorin

Rick we all root for our teams but let’s stop with the nonsense for a second. As good as Kobe is, his job has never been to teach the triangle offense to any of his Lakers teammates over the years. Hell, Phil Jackson even had the inventor of the modern triangle along for most of the ride in Chicago and LA, he didn’t do it all by himself. Unless Phil schooled Mike Brown during the summer in his secret underground lair in Montana, the Lakers will be rolling out a new system. As for the Heat, they really only had half of a championship team last year.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Lakers went from getting Chris Paul in their arena in their jersey to giving away Lamar Odom for paint chips and getting Chris Paul in their arena in a different jersey….

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The Lakers are stupid for not waiting for the trade to be approved. Jim Buss basically went, “I’m tired of waiting… Let’s just give Lamar Odom to Dallas.”
    WTF?!

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

This is a good deal for both teams IF CP3 signs the extention AND his knee holds up. I know he finished last season strong, but that knee is really a long-term concern. Gordon, Kaman and a early first round 2012 pick, that’s something worth building around. A large part of me thinks the Clippers should not have done this deal and waited for next years draft (their own pick plus the Minny pick) would have been a lot of additional talent to add and build upon. I understand a talent likde CP3 doesn’t come around very often, but I’m not 100% this was a great deal either way. I guess that’s what makes it seem so ‘fair’ for both teams – the way Stern said he wanted it.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

balek will average 40 point just from CP3 ally-oop’s

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    BALEK…. I like that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Dont see them doing much besides making it to the playoffs this year, but after they fire vinny, the could be a legitimate championship contender. I say this skeptically though, because after all it is the clippers.

  • http://www.2ksports.com showtime

@ Run GUn NO the clippers are giving that pick along with gordon,Kaman, Al farouq ( who i think in time can become a beast). But i hearing SterN is greedy He wants Bledsoe in deal too. So that 5 player potential for 1.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

I don’t know if I agree with a couple of those statements kamla.. first paul def. doesn’t have to put the entire team on his back like he did with the hornets. blake, gordon and deandre will make sure of that, and while they’re not going to be a championship contender this year, I’m thinking they go at least the 2nd round. and 2nd, even if rondo hadn’t gotten injured there’s no way the celtics win that series. They were facing the 2 of the best penetrating athletic slashers in the game, with aging an aging perimeter and almost nothing protecting the basket. they were doomed.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I saw what Chris Paul did in New Orleans last year.
Put him on that Clippers team with the talent they have, and it’s over.
Caron, Chris Paul, Blake, Gordon and Jordan.
That starting five is as good as any in the West.
The Lakers, Spurs and Mavs better be ready because Memphis, OKC and the Clips are ready for their turn.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Wojnarowski just reported that the deal could be dying. Clippers are unwilling to accomadate the Hornets steep asking price.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Do y’all not realize that they have legit players at every position, and several good backups?
Caron Butler is a legit small forward.
Eric Gordon is a budding star.
    Blake is a star.
    Jordan is a legit center.
    Chris Paul is a superstar.
Mo Williams is a great back up.
Ryan Gomes is a very good role player.
The only problem is Del Negro. That’s it.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Wow, if they can get CP3 AND keep Eric Gordon then that is a team to watch out for.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The real problem for me is that while this deal is high on potential, it doesn’t address the issue at all of small market teams losing out to big market teams. The Clippers still play in L.A. and it’s still a big market.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

also i’d argue that the 3 amigos have plenty of basketball iq, they are both excellent passers… but that kobe and cp3 simply have better skills, and their games fit better together than wade and lebron (who are essentially the same player) I agree tho cp3,kobe, and dwight> bron, wade and cp3 but it wouldn’t be a cake walk by any means.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Brooklynzoo

Megatron, yeah just seen that too, New Orleans wants EG but they have no leverage so I think they will fold and lower the price

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

I just heard the deal might be dying tho allenp

  • angel of stern

lol datkid, i think everyone heard that considering it is posted about 5 comments above yours

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

oops.. lol didnt see that comment.

  • megatron

haha I don’t see how the hornets won’t fold though, apparently they want eric gordan too. They arent going to get a better deal then the one they have, if they are gonna be that demanding, cp3 is just gonna walk at the end of the season

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

I think the clippers have more leverage here

  • neaorin

Wow what in the world are the Hornets asking for then? I initially read it was Bledsoe, Aminu, Kaman and the 1st from Minny which makes a lot of sense for the Clips. Gordon instead of Bledsoe, I can see them backing out. Gordon AND Bledsoe, that’s just stupid.
