Lakers Get Chris Paul, Give Up Gasol, Odom in Trade

Rumors have been floating around all day about the Hornets having a deal with the Lakers for Chris Paul. According to Yahoo!, the rumors are now very close to becoming real: “The Los Angeles Lakers are nearing an agreement to acquire All-Star point guard Chris Paul in a three-team trade that will cost them Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Lakers are finalizing the trade with the New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets. Under the terms of the deal, the Lakers would send Gasol to the Rockets. The Hornets would receive Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola, league sources said. ‘It’s not finalized, but we’re close,’ one front-office official involved in the negotiations said.”

UPDATE: The deal is off.

Gave up too much. Hope we can some how snag Howard now. The Lakers are gonna nedd him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Dont know how I feel about this yet. probably would of been better off waiting for Dwight.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Who the f#ck is gonna play the four?

  • Dr. DL

Ok so now I hate Chris Paul. Better him than Dwight I guess.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Hmmm. Didn’t want to see both go, but interesting for sure. Lets see if it goes through. Would be interesting to go from the worse starting PG in the L to the best….. HMMMMMMM

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I thought it was Gasol to HOU, CP to LA and Scola/KMart to NO?
If the lakers and the Hornets sign off on this deal, there’s no way LA can get DHow this season.

  • nbaNw8

    UH OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • LAKERS

know it seems like they are giving up a lot but when you consider paul is 5 years younger than pau and 6 younger than odom they just gave themselves a new face of the franchise for years to come. Hopefully they can still get howard just to complete the roster.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Are the Lakers going to sign David West as a FA? The four spot just got crowded in Nawlins.

  • DuckTape The Mob

@JTalylor21 Don’t worry about that just worry about Eddy Curry and the Heat

Fisher Time to sit yo ass down on the bench

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

They better throw their hat in the ring on Nene too. If they were going to do this I can’t believe they didn’t go harder after Caron Butler. I have a feeling Buss Jr. is about to destroy my favorite franchise. I also have a feeling that the report on this deal is a little premature. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.

  • LA Huey

Wow, they’d go from the best big man rotation in the league to one that doesn’t exist.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

worry about PF later. Chris Paul <3

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

I’m not sure if this makes the Lakers better or not. If they get D12 then I like their ‘big 3′, however, Bynum is almost certainly going to get injured at some point in time during the season and likely during the playoffs. That would leave them with virtually no interior players.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I dunno Huey, Bynum is still the 2nd or 3rd best Center in the League. I hate to see Odom go though. I wish they would do Metta and Pau and Blake or something…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Lakers are making a HUGE mistake trading Gasol…

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

PLEASE drop Artest, sign West. And PLEASE bring in Billups to back up Paul!!!!
Ebanks and Character can start getting some play. Drop Walton.

  • cheesewiz

Getting Chris Paul isn’t so bad, but trading away the guy (Gasol) that got in you in the finals multiple times probably isn’t the brightest idea

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

The Lakers will become a destination now with Kobe and Paul there.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I don’t think so Teddy. Depending on who they can grab anyway. I don’t know where the numbers are at for the Lakes now, but If we can grab a decent PF then we’re good to go. Hell, it’s time for World Peace to bang in the post. Metta congrats on the new PF assignment.

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

The Lakers must be really confident that they can get a big man, either Howard or someone else, if they pull this thing off. But it doesnt make since, Chris Brussard said the Hornets want youth + draft picks + a veteran. This is a bad deal for both parties actually.

  • O

Annnnnnd Khloe Kardashian is preparing the divorce papers…

  • cheesewiz

Bynum is neither the 2nd, nor the 3rd best Center in the league tho,to basically everyone thats not a Laker fan, thats the thing.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Lake, he’s talking about the advantage they had over every team with 3 highly-skilled 7footers is gone. Also, don’t act like Bynum is the most durable cat out there, he’s most certainly going to miss some time during this season (he also has to miss the first 5gms due to a suspension).

  • robb

Wow Gasol and Odom? I’m happy but I wasn’t expecting that. Brad Long said it best “Who the f#ck is gonna play the four?” Maybe David West is included?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

cheesewiz I would never take anything you think seriously after you said the Gasol got them to the Finals multiple times. Kobe didn’t even get them to the Finals multiple times. It’s called a TEAM. Tell me who is the 2nd and 3rd best center in the L? Bogut is the only person i’ll accept as a legitimate 2nd best center in the L.

  • http://counterkicks.com Quinned

holy crap they must really love bynum

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

$10 says now that Odom isnt in LA for the reality show he gets Kris Humphries’d

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

woah….gotta wait till things are finalized before I completely make my assessments…..two of the most intense competitors the game has ever seen on the same squad….insane

  • Galagu

    aww sh!t

  • http://nba.com GP23

    This aint gonna happen…

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

damn son. i dont know how to feel as a Lakers fan. Ecstatic to get Paul. But kind of sad to loose Odom. You win some you loose some. Hopefully Orlando likes World Peace.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    It just did.

  • ripslam

Not sure if the Lakers are any better after this…their bench takes a hit and they’re looking mighty thin down low. Obviously they held out Bynum to try and grab Dwight, I doubt that’ll happen though.

  • Ldub20

I like CP3 in LA. I dont like giving up both Odom and Gasol tho. Especially since the Lakers need that down low presence in order to compete in the west with the Mavs, Thunder, shoot even the Grizz and the old ass Spurs. Unless another big is somewhere close in the mix. This trade wouldnt make too much sense. Kobe is out in what 4-5 yrs? And CP3 would be in another NO position. Chandler going to NY (possbly for STAT…’which might actually might work coming to LA as the 4′). Alot of things to consider, but Bynum needs to be in the trade not both Odom and/or Gasol.

  • LA Huey

LakeShow, I agree that Bynum’s good but my comment was more (like JTaylor and others mentioned) about the rotation they had. They were able to start games with two skilled 7 footers and bring a starting quality PF off the bench. The fact that the only big they have left standing is injury prone, leaves the Lakers with arguably just as big a hole in the paint as they did with Fisher at PG.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Taylor. Then he should have said that. Don’t say Gasol got them to the Finals that’s BS. Artest, Odom, Kobe, Gasol, Fisher, Ariza, Bynum all had critical plays that they made that helped the Lakers get there different years. Sometimes Gasol sucked and we won. Sometimes he was the most important player. It’s just stupid Logic to say that Gasol is why they got to the Finals.

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

@GP23, SLAM changed the title to make it seem like its pretty much a done deal. By reading this article it just seems like they working out the small details and waiting until midnight to make it official.

  • robb

I understand Bynum and Odom for CP3 but Gasol? damn.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Yeah, but lets not act like Chris Paul is easier to guard than Gasol or Odom. Paul is one of the hardest covers in the L, and he shoots a FG% that is comparable to a PF/C. Best PG in the L plus the best(imo)SG in the L plus a top 3 center when healthy is a GREAT team. If you think they aren’t going to make another trade that gets them someone for the post then you are sadly mistaken. Yes, 3, 7 footers and Kobe is why they won before. Now it is going to be different. Much more balanced with a threat at every position instead of just 3. It is dependent on Bynum’s health though(which is freaking scary).

  • respect

lets gooo!!! christmas day chris paul vs d-rose will be a great way to start the season

  • retrobat

NO seems to be getting a pretty good deal out of all this. They get Kmart AND Scola. Not bad at all. I don’t see how this helps the Rockets, though. I think they are giving up too much.

  • Stevie Jenkins

The best backcourt in the world resides in LA.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Lake, explain to me how the lakers have a “threat” at every position? You do realize that LA just lost their star PF and that Ron Artest is still going to occupy that 3 spot, right?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Not making this Bynum, Odom, Blake for Paul, Okafor was a mistake. Bynum getting hurt is worst case scenario and probably also most likely scenario.

  • Ali

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DONT SELL ODOM AND PAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lakersince90

WOOOOOW! the first five games are going to be awful with bynum out. at least i got my two favorite players on the same squad. hell, they better get an inside prescence soon though. cause in reality even that wont be enough to satisfy me. im sorry for being spoiled with championships, ITS LAker THING.

  • LA Huey

    Bynum’s trade bait.

  • link981

I personally think the lakers gave up too much to acquire Chris Paul, the lost one great player, one versatile player for an All Star Player who regressed last year (he made up for it in the playoffs though). This deal will work out only is Dwight Howard signs with the Lakers, then it would be worth it.
