Lakers Get Chris Paul, Give Up Gasol, Odom in Trade

Rumors have been floating around all day about the Hornets having a deal with the Lakers for Chris Paul. According to Yahoo!, the rumors are now very close to becoming real: “The Los Angeles Lakers are nearing an agreement to acquire All-Star point guard Chris Paul in a three-team trade that will cost them Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Lakers are finalizing the trade with the New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets. Under the terms of the deal, the Lakers would send Gasol to the Rockets. The Hornets would receive Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola, league sources said. ‘It’s not finalized, but we’re close,’ one front-office official involved in the negotiations said.”

UPDATE: The deal is off.

i hope they can get a sign and trade with a major free agent to package with bynum for d12 now.

I doubt they have Artest starting at the 3 spot this year Taylor. I see a couple more changes happening so i’m going to stop arguing hypothetical’s until a few more things get accomplished. But yes I think the core of Paul, Bryant, and Bynum is better than Bryant, Pau, Bynum.

Yo, wheres Tarzan?? The Lockout is officially over!!!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Trade bait for who? I don’t see Orl agreeing to a simple Bynum for DHow swap, the better deal for them is with NJ (Lopez and 2 first-round picks).

Let me just say this. The Lakers wouldn’t have made this deal unless they knew that they will be getting Howard in the near future. That explains why they were adamant on not including Bynum in this deal!

Before everyone goes nuts on CP3, I just wanted to take the time to appreciate all that Gasol did for the Lakers. Seriously, that man was a God send for this team in 2008, and even more so in Game 7 of the 2010 Finals. His importance cannot be understated. I know he’s not known as the best PF, but he was an amazing team player, someone that Kobe said was his favourite player in the league. Our front line is much weaker now; the Lakers have basically gone away from what made them so deadly from 2008-2010.

I also would have thought that Scola would go to the Lakers as well. At least the Hornets got something tangible and also they will be in the running for Gilchrist, Sullinger, Lamb, Johnson. Teague.

umh..well La lost their advantage….D12 def not coming, gave up too much…but the perimenter did get hellah better , cant wait to see the opening day game…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheshire

And we still didn’t trade Steve Blake! I want Dwight more than CP tho…. Now we can call up Dwight and see how he’s doing

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

I like getting Paul, but giving up Gasol and Odom kinda saddens me as a Lakers fan. We’ll see how it bangs out

  • golakeshow

Suck it league. LA just got the best guard tandem in the NBA! Next stop Finals suckers.

  • DJ MBENGA

    They’ll regret trading Pau . . .

  • Ldub20

trade actually makes alot of sense. Rumor is that Bynum/Howard trade will be next. which means you now have the games best pg in Paul and the best C in Howard. 2 things that Miami heat NEEDED. Unless lebron plays the point. This move makes La’s Big 3 far more dangerous than Miami’s.

And with Chandler running to NY, and Barea out of Dallas as well. It kinda decreased the chances of Mavs to get back to the finals.

The reason the lakers won was because of their size and skill in the front court. Now they have two injury prone dudes to rely on heavily and kobe is what 34?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

lakers arent getting howard for bynum and artest, if they do, I will seriously stop watching basketball as much as I love, because something is seriously fishy with that.

This just made my day! Out with the old, in with the new. Lakers know you need to rebuild soon and let’s face it, gasol or Odom aren’t gettin any younger.
To everyone worried about an “inside presence”, I’m sure the Lakers thought it through b4 pushing the trigger. So look for L.A to make some more moves.
So far I’m too excited to see a rejuvenated Kobe play with a prime CP3!!

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

@SlickRic – A lot of it has to do with where the player wants to go as well. Teams are hesitant to offer packages to Orlando if Howard just plans to bolt after the season is done. LA is one of the few teams that can offer pieces and you know the star player being traded would be willing to stay long term. With that being said, New Orleans has a SOLID line up for next year.

  • rand33p

best pg in the L and best 2 gaurd in the L makes for the best back court in a longggg time… NOW the question is what the lakers do to fill out the roster/trades/signings … should be interesting but with that Back court and no moves they’re still contenders and ur silly if u think otherwise

  • nicholas

whos going to play pf for the lake show?

  • Ldub20

@SlickRic…google it bro. It would make sense for the Lakers to make the trade as well as the Magic to make the trade. Howard wont sign a contract ext in Orl…so they would be best fit in getting someone who has a contract already.
Howard would be more prone to signing w/ LA with Kobe and Paul there. Same with Paul signing (even though his agent claims he wants to go to NY). But since they are signing Chandler…that may not happen anymore. Even with the amnesty perhaps used on Billups.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

They still have the MLE don’t they? I’m sure they can pick up a decent PF off waivers or free agency.

  • Ldub20

David West would be a good pickup. Solid in the post, good rebounder, can hit the midrange jumper. That by far would be the craziest lineup assembled. Damn Avengers.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Unless a team is willing to give up some valuable assets for either Arenas or Turkoglu in a 3 team trade there is noway the Lakers get Howard. And those assets would have to be superior to whatever New Jersey, & Houston work up by the deadline.

  • Ldub20

David West would be a good pick up no? Decent defender (especially with DH behind him)…solid mid range jumper, and he played with CP3 for numerous seasons so that chemistry is already there. Paul-Bryant-????-West-Howard. You could even stick Matt Barnes at the 3 (and hope that he can play defense like he did when the Magic played “against” the Lakers, and its still a mad crazy lineup!

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Pretty sure World Peace is still playing the 3. I doubt West would sign for just the MLE.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Someone just called David West a “good rebounder”

  • Ldub20

Houston just lost out on pieces to Orlando by send Martin, Dragic and Scola to NO in the trade with the Lakers. and as far as Jersey is concerned…they would be stupid to give up Lopez for ONE season of DH and Dwill…especially with all the activity in the east already.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Out of all the crazy ish that has went down today, someone as in the Knicks, agreeing to pay Tyson Chandler 60mill for 5yrs takes the cake.

  • rich

wow that is gonna be some defense on the perimiter chris is the type of guy who will tell kobe to get his old ass off the court if he isnt giving 100 percent on D and with artest i dont know how the other team is going to breathe on the perimiter

  • jake

Ugh…..not sure about this one. Odom is th eemotional leader…

  • YaBoy

NEW UPDATE: OKAFOR ADDED TO THE DEAL

  • Ed

Are the Lakers also getting Okafor?

  • robb

Tyson Chandler 60 millions for 5 years??? It seems they didn’t learn sh*t from the whole lockout situation

  • robb

    *million

  • Maniac

@Jake do you watch basketball? Wtf.

  • Maniac

And I’m gonna keep my mouth shut about free agency until it is over. Just know it has only begun….

  • http://djkflflc.om Jukai

Oh man, the choices for Dwight Howard is living the Big Apple city life in New York getting easy lob passes by Deron Williams… or living the Hollywood beach life in LA getting easy lob passes by Chris Paul.
This trade stuff must be killing Dwight.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I may be mistaken but I’m pretty sure the Lakers will get the full MLE because they are already over the cap. They may end up getting like Kris Humphries (no joke intended)

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Maniac…Right. Geez I have been dealing with these morons all day.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Buss loves him some Bynum. He better be right about him.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Will not* get the full MLE

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Actually it was 60mill for 4yrs. So yes, a guy that didn’t even avg. double-double last season is going to be making superstar money. WTF!

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

It’s gonna pretty funny if Houston uses what it gets in this deal to acquire Dwight.

  • Jpt

Bynum and Blake since were loaded at the point for Howard and Brandon Bass??? And that would solve our 4 spot

  • dma

    RIGGED RIGGED RIGGED

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Did someone just call Lamar Odom the emotional leader of the Lakers? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA.

  • Maniac

Yo lakeshow I understand man… believe me I understand lol

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The Hornets may have improved overall. Legit two, legit four, legit three and they still have jarrett jack and okafor. They will fight for the eight seed.
