Derrick Rose Blames Himself for Bulls’ Loss to Heat

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

The truth of the matter is that were it not for Derrick Rose’s acrobatic heroics in the fourth quarter, the Chicago Bulls wouldn’t have even been in position to steal a win from the Miami Heat yesterday afternoon.

Unfortunately for Rose and the Bulls, all anyone will remember (including Derrick himself) are the two missed free throws late in the contest which would have given Chicago the lead with 22 seconds to go, and the resulting defeat that seemed to momentarily crush Rose’s spirit. He beat himself up following the loss.

From the Chicago Tribune:

He looked downward glumly. He swore. He referenced a higher power. Rose didn’t cry, although his voice caught during one answer, he stopped to compose himself during another and who knows what happened before reporters were allowed in the locker room.

“It’s definitely tough,” Rose said. “All I can say is, I guess God does everything for a reason. To miss both and let my team down, the only thing I can do is learn from it. This is so unreal. I had a chance to change the game. This time, it didn’t work out. I know my will to win is still very high. I guarantee you next time those shots are going down.”

This is familiar territory for Derrick Rose. He blamed himself last year when LeBron James and the Miami Heat ousted the Bulls from the Playoffs, and went into a long emotional funk before vowing to return stronger than ever before.

Until the Bulls figure out a way to come up with real answers for Miami, especially come Playoff time, the pain will not subside.

Still love him. Trade Carlos LOOZER

  • AD

drose is still learning how to be a point guard…. He’ll get there because he is too talented and such a hard worker….. There were certain fastbreaks where the bulls didn’t capitalize on which hurted them and rip was wide open in the corner on the last play but hopefully they should come together…. I notice tho when LBJ guards rose, he tends to be passive .. Is that choking on Lebrons part??

  • dsleepy

still can’t be mad at the kid. he wants to win so bad you can almost see it oozing through the tv screen when he does interviews. hope he uses the losses as fuel to motivate him higher, a la mj. go bulls.

  • 2307

at the end of the day without rose the bulls would be a first round team at best, but this is what a good leader does, takes responsability and doesnt except losing or make excuses! bulls still are not ready to beat the heat in he play offs though

  • clutch

This is the 4th game that he’s missed clutch freethrows smh. He’s done it against kansas in college, the clippers last season, miami in game 5 last season, and now. The guy isn’t clutch simple as that. Talented player and probably the best point guard right now, but if the game is close and the opposing team has to foul, I’d rather give the ball to noah.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Its disappointing. I don’t know what you want me to do. Do you want me to cry? I don’t know what you want me to do. How disappointing? Very disappointing, is that ok? Its disappointing.

    I love pop

  • http://slamonline.com Jones

Dont forget against the Celtics during 2009 during that epic playoff series.

  • The doon

“God does everything for a reason[...]” wtf you missed two freethrows, nobody cares. It aint like somebodys gonna die because of that, cmon man. You think god give a s#!t about freethrows? Still top 3PG in the League right now

  • AD

is it me or the prase “not clutch” is overated…. Kobe aint clutch either… He just takes all the shots and has supreme confidence

  • MLK4Life

I know I didn’t see someone here say that Noah should have the ball on the free throw line instead of Rose. How idiotic can a person be? Rose will learn. He’s 23. Still very young. With Deng and CJ Watson, its clear to see that the Bulls would have won. And when fully healthy, they are more than capable of beating Miami in the ECF. It will be a battle.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

“With Dend and CJ Watson, its clear to see that the Bulls would have won”. That comment is almost as bad as the Noah one. If those two play, its a completely different game. If Wade shoots better than 35% next game (when he is usually a high 40′s fg shooter) then it might be a blow out. See how that works?

  • bull22

really respect derrick rose and glad he got recognized by a sports analyst as the most accountable player in the nba. carlos boozer and yoakim noah, amongst other bulls missed alot of easy layups and open looks and yet derrick rose refuses
to blame his teammates publicly… simply put bulls need to make those easy baskets against heat in playoffs and they should be fine.

  • Bt

Score first, shot dominant point guards who are the primary scorer on their team don’t win championships. It’s never happened (isiah was pass first). Rose took way too many shots last night and didn’t get his teammates involved

  • MLK4Life

@AllBall. Yes, you’re right. It would’ve been a different game. Deng would have guarded LeBron and CJ would have been able to give Rose a little rest. John Lucas wouldn’t have had to play. Common sense should tell you that the Bulls would’ve been better with Deng and Watson. The Heat were fully healthy. The Bulls weren’t and they still were in position to win. You can’t realistically compare an off night from Wade to the Bulls not having their star small forward and backup PG.

  • Randy Brown

Didn’t Rose hit something like 29 straight fourth quarter free throws before this? They couldn’t all have been in blowouts. They’re free throws, he’s bound to miss some.

  • Deerose

There’s alot of idiotic comments ALWAYS about DROse taking too many shots. Tell me WHO else on that team besides Deng is capable night in and night out of easing that load off of Rose? If you say LOozer or NOah, you need your eyes checked. Rip is over the hill. Some of you act like Rose is a ball hog. Yet lemme see him take 15 or fewer shots and Loozer play like he does, and without DEng and tell me if the Bulls win. SMDH

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Deng and Watson played in the play-offs last year, yet the Bulls lost. Like we both agree it would have been a completely different game if they played, doesn’t mean it would definitely be a different out come.

  • Deerose

Last I checked, being nervous or anxious can cause a 23 year old AND even the most seasoned vet to miss free throws and make mistakes. Some of you have never played ball competitively by your comments.

  • Deerose

  • bashmo

Word the man is human. It IS possible to miss you know…

  • ctk

    He needs help PERIOD

  • Animalxxx13

Rose is so overrated that desagana diop would have hit at least one

  • quest

i still think he shoots too much unnecessarily, there are many times where i think he could have hit the roll guy on screens and where he misses open guys for layups to take contested shots that really drop his fg%. i think when he sees the floor better he will have a fg% like lbj

  • MLK4Life

Rip wasn’t there last season. With a fully healthy roster, its a toss up between these two teams. Let us also remember that LeBron missed two free throws at the end himself and had they lost, there would be no story about Rose and it would all be about LeBron and his lack of a “clutch gene”. And yes, Rose was 29 for 29 from the line in 4th quarters until yesterday. I still believe the Bulls should have gone after Jamal Crawford harder. Rip fits and will help, but a guy who can handle the ball like a PG and create would have helped Rose more. But as presently constructed, they have enough to get past Miami and I think Miami knows it.

  • http://slamonline.com. datkid

I doubt rip makes that much of a difference MLK4Life. but yeah i agree a guy who could handle like a pg would have been ideal for them.

  • BallisLove

    All the haters…

  • clutch

Lol of course rose is a better free throw shooter than noah I said that because this is NOT the first time he’s missed clutch freethrows. How the hell does age effect the easiest shot in the game? Lol stop defending him he’s done that crap before. And luol deng played in the playoffs last year and they still got owned in only 5 games and lebron has been matched up against him in the regular season and playoffs since he was in Cleveland. Luol and rip are not the answer.

  • clutch

Oh yea and detroit pistons all day lol

  • ThaWindy

A huge part of the game is staying mentally ready and alert.
After he missed those two ft Rose threw his mouth piece across the flr like the game was over. Someone( a vet) shld have yelled at him to stay in the game. Still had chance to win.
I know its hard, but wait till its over to fall apart.

  • Riggs

RIP played horrible. But what really cost the game was that dumb*ss jumpball call when it was clearly seen that wade was out of bounds.

  • MLK4Life

Ah. That explains it. I wouldn’t expect much out of a Detroit Pistons fan. Much less one who publicly shares it when that team is so horrible.

  • clutch

MLK4Life aw shut up there in a rebuilding stage no big deal. They do suck but who cares! Derrick rose missed the free throws!!! Detroit sports all day!!!

  • http://jdilla jdilla

    Great game!The Heat r n trouble n they know it…lmao

  • Animalxxx13

Still waiting for Ben Gordon to be an all star though

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

    last night’s game meant nothing.

  • MLK4Life

    @clutch No, they just suck.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    Rose will be aight.
I’m more concerned with Boozer one again proving his b*tcha**-ness against the Heat.
It’s like dude fears the elite teams. I really hope they trade or amnesty him.
At this point I wouldn’t care if they traded him for any expiring contract.

  • http://www.coachesclipboard.net/FlexOffense.html nbk

They should try and trade Boozer for Kaman and play Noah at the 4

  • MLK4Life

@Enigmatic I’m with you. He hasn’t lived up to his contract at all. When they need him the most, he doesn’t show up. He was supposed to be the low post scorer that they needed.

  • Kas

Blaming God isn’t blaming yourself. Unless, of course, you’re God. So Rose thinks of himslef as God after one MVP-award, 0 championships.

  • el_larsen

don t blame god you missed them .then bron missed.then chalmers made 1 on 2.only bosh made two!

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Anyone else kinda dislike how athletes often look to God and claim his hand had divine intervention in a game? Sorry guys but if there is a God, he’s got more important things to do than monitor the parabolic arch of a ball of leather.

  • T-Ray

I’m sensing a double standard here because when LeBron missed freethrows a lot of people were hating…bottom line he missed them no excuses from him as expected he’ll be in the gym working. Those of you saying they would have one had Deng and CJ played maybe but they didn’t lost cause. Besides this game doesn’t mean sh*t anyway. Bulls won 3-0 last season and lost in 5 games so who cares.

  • T-Ray

    And cosign Caboose
Never understand why players bring God into sports. Not hating on them for doing it but do they do it cuz they think God wants them to win over another person?

  • LP

Rose does get passive when Lebron Guards him….he never “tries” him…he just kind of shies away… i want to see him go at him consistently, i want to see if Lebron really can stop him…

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

I highly dislike people bringing God into any situation where you beat another Human. (imo) it’s narcissistic to believe God is going to favor you over another person and help you win or better your situation while making some else’s worse. So typically I just try to ignore it.

  • shutup

Such a double standard; if the heat woulda lost after Lebron missed those free throws muthaf%$kkas woulda came out the wood work to sh!t on him. Wade saved the ball he was clearly inbounds when he jumped, and Rose traveled but they gave him that timeout anyway. All this talk if Deng and Jesus was healthy the Bulls woulda won, you play with the team available at the time, and even though some of the shots Rose took went in it doesnt make them good shots. I really liked Jeff VanGundy’s analysis of Rose’s over exaggerated head movement on minimal contact, compelling stuff right there.

  • boss

RELAX d rose is clutch he closed alot of games right now his big challenge is vs miami just like how jordan had the detroit pistons he has time hes young

  • bike

God had his money on LeBron yesterday. When you are an omnipotent being that knows in advance how everything will turn out, you can make a killing betting on basketball.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Carlos Booser = good against bad teams, bad against good teams.

  • robb

Rose can’t do everything by himself, specially when playing against teams like the Heat. He needs help ASAP.

  • the Don

    @bike rofl hahaha

  • http://bulls.com airs

As much as some ppl want to discount them (mutoni), the bulls aren’t too far away from beating this Heat team.
No deng, no watson, no boozer*, taj fresh off injury and rip with a strained groin and they still are 2 free throws away from winning. At miami.
The Bulls will be fine, especially if the heat don’t learn how to run some real plays down the stretch.

  • Brion

Cosign “shutup’s” comment about Van Gundy’s head whip opinion. I totally agreed and feel alot of players do that. Also, obviously Howard to Chicago would be game over, but if that happened who would go in the trade?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Rose has nothing to feel down about because without him CHI loses that game by double digits. All the blame should go to Carlos Boooooooooooooozer for getting emasculated by CB1 yet again on national tv.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Don’t know if it’s been said in prior comments but Rip was horrible offensively down the stretch. He did well defending Wade and even Bron on a few post ups but on the other end, he was terrible. More and more, it seems like Miami plays amazing for 36 minutes then give it all up by the 6 minute mark of the 4th and have to fight to finish the game. Still don’t get it. Their bench isn’t all that bad and either Bron or Wade is usually in there.

  • Ldub

Look at how much love D-Rose gets even after a loss. This guy is my 2nd fav player in the L. He doesnt whine, doesnt complain, doesnt run around saying he’d rather play for another team, or wanna have another “SUPERSTAR” come play. Dude has literally carried the Bulls on his back with basically no help at all. Boozer was suppoed to be the help, and definitely underachieved last season. And I dont see him doing much more this season either. Bottom line is DRose is what many NBA players should strive to be. Show up, do your job to the best of your abilities and let nature take its course.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

With a combined weight of 2,608 pounds, I highly doubt Rose has “literally” carried his teammates on his back.

  • http://www.slamonline.com house

I really feel that with Deng healthy the Bulls would have won this.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

honestly im more convinced than ever after yesterday, a healthy bulls are the best team

Rose is a good guy. It’s gonna be a sic battle when they collide in the Playoffs. Lookin forward to it & cosign the doon !

  • Mo

I like Derrick Rose. He seems like a cool and humble dude. But I wonder how long before the media stops giving him a pass for not closing out games against the Heat and stop accepting the “It’s all my fault” card he plays after every loss. Not hating on Rose but he’s gonna start catching heat (no pun intended) if this continues into the playoffs again this year.

  • http://fjskdlf.com Jukai

Enigmatic: you do that math in your head?

  • bull22

@ldub very good point, boozer and noah both need to quit talking about how they got rose’s back and they will go to war with him, and yet they dont bother to show up when it counts against the heat.

  • http://www.slamonline.com house

I really like Rose’s competitive spirit and his accountability. He took responsibility for the loss, (although I would ask where the hell was Boozer’s accountability) and despite people here ragging on him for his so-called repeated failures he is still going to try harder and harder to succeed. You look at any NBA star, past or present, who has supposedly ‘choked’ one or more times in their career. They always keep striving to improve and to succeed.
And to all the anti-Rose naysayers who are calling him out for ‘not being clutch’ in this game… you couldn’t do sh!t any better than he could, in fact you would damn sure do it worse. GG couch-critics.

  • http://www.slamonline.com house

On another note.. Would Kaman be a good fit in the Bulls?

  • Ldub

someone mentioned that Rose cant close games? Thats a joke. He brought the Bulls back basically by himself in the 4th. Floater after floater, Layups, getting the cup, etc. Lowkey was making me mad, but he is a great player. That is what is expected. Kobe does it, Wade did it, Bron has done it, Melo has done it…to be conceived as great, you have to perform greatly in situations like yesterdays game.
someone else said that he takes too many unnecessary shots. That too is also a JOKE. Rose is most definitely (this year) a pass first pg. He hasnt been as aggressive as he was last year, and because of that his hesitation has greated a dip in the fg%. If anything he has passed up open shots to get teammates involved, which gets the overall team in trouble because he becomes less of a weapon on the court (mainly when they arent hitting). But Rose’s fg% is definitely not down because of “too many shots”

  • Ldub

  • l2ising Phoenix

Missing clutch free throws is D roses worst nightmare. Go back to the title game between Memphis and Kansas, he had a chance to ice the game with a freethrow and he missed both I believe , than super Mario came down , hit a 3 and forced OT. With memphis eventually losing. I think it still hurts him when/if he misses crunch time free throws.

  • Jose

Respect to Rose. . . win or lose

  • bull22

bottom line is anyone who actually sees the bulls play and not read espn articles or just sees highlights to draw ridiculous assessment of rose knows that he draws the attention of the entire team on the defensive side… once everyone else starts doing their jobs and knocking down wide open shots and making easy layups then the bulls will be hard to defend..

  • bull22

hahahaha bring God into this…HE DIDNT MAKE YOU NOT PASS TO A WIDE OPEN RIP HAMILTON!!!
Quit crying, LeBron> Rose always – GO OSU COWBOYS!!

  • crabbie

rose and lebron are both chokers

  • Spades

Why does Derrick Rose get waivers for not sinking the game but LeBron never gets any slack? He missed two critical free throws and the game-winner in a game that might determine playoff seeding if their records are tied.

  • Anthony Jay

I bet that Dwight Howard trade is sounding really good right about now…

  • Ice

Why are so meany people hating D.Rose.Everyone misses free throws,Even your heroes. He played his heart during that game,If the rest of teammates were playing half has hard.Perhaps they would have won.Typical that haters are going to hate him for failing,They still bring up his time with Memphis.Rose Is clutch all day,Also James missed to.So don’t try to bash on Rose.Rose well be champion,The more haters hate the more It drives him.Much Respect to amazing player and a great person.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Jukai – that’s everyone’s listed weights added up minus Rose. used basketball-reference.

  • Dingo Rob

no need to bash yourself down, it’s not the playoffs – I love Rose he comes across genuine but this reaction seems a little over the top.

  • Cam

“Go back to the title game between Memphis and Kansas, he had a chance to ice the game with a freethrow and he missed both I believe”- l2ising Phoenix

Nope. He missed 1 FT late in that game. He also had a great 2nd half which put them in a position to win. Chris Douglas-Roberts was the guy who missed 3 late FT’s.

  • Cam

Yes, while being surrounded by 3 Heat players and with 5 seconds on the clock Rose should’ve miraculously gotten the ball to Hamilton in the corner, especially since Hamilton was 4-16 from the floor and playing with a bad groin. That’s a heck of an idea and quite realistic.

  • Yesse

I think he played well, but you can’t always win.

  • Justin G.

Wow, are we really going back to his college days to say Rose isn’t a clutch player? That’ sad. And the reason Lebron gets more flack about not performing in the 4th quarters or missing free throws is because it has happened to him a lot more. Granted, he’s been in the NBA a lot longer and has been in these situations a lot more but when you’re the self proclaimed “King”, touted as the next Jordan or at least the potential to unseat him as the GOAT, have ridiculous 1 hour specials and proclaim it’s possible to win 5, 6, 7 championships…then you’re going to get a lot more scrutinized and you’re going to look even worse when you don’t perform like how everyone thinks you should perform. To quote a common phrase from nbk and AllenP…”I just don’t understand how that’s not more obvious to people”

  • blake

derrick did miss the free throws but he maned up and said it was his fault most people wouldnt say that and he gurranted it wont happen again most people wouldnt say that

  • http://SLAM FLIGHT 9

Lebron always consistently miss tons of important free throws and never takes blame on himself!!! C’mon Derrick I know you gonna kill them next time..
