Dirk Nowitzki: ‘I Haven’t Seen One Team in the West That I’m Scared of’

In addition to shooting down claims that he was out of shape to start the year, Dirk Nowitzki tells the media that the defending champion Dallas Mavericks have nothing to fear in their conference. From ESPN: “I haven’t seen one team in the West that I’m scared of,’ Nowitzki said. ‘I really haven’t. I think we can compete with all of them. Oklahoma City has probably the best record, but I think we’ve played them well every time we’ve seen them and everybody else has been up and down.’ […] Dallas is 11-8 and tied with the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers for sixth in the West despite Nowitzki’s early-season woes. After struggling, by his standards, for 16 games, Nowitzki will sit out his fourth consecutive game Friday night against the Utah Jazz, taking a week to go through a personal training camp and strengthen his sore right knee. The Mavs are the league’s oldest team and anticipate ebbs and flows to a lockout-shortened, 66-game regular season. They aren’t concerned about playoff seeding as long as they qualify. Their priority is to be as rested, fresh and ready to peak once the postseason begins. ‘All we have to do is keep working and hopefully keep everyone healthy and be there when it counts and in the playoffs,’ said Nowitzki, who hopes to return Sunday against the rival San Antonio Spurs. ‘But I’m not scared of seeing anyone I’ve seen.’”

    golden state warriors……….

  • 24

    seriously?^

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

well yeah, I can’t think of someone in the west at his position that can guard him one-on-one.

  • 24

No, i mean golden state being a team Dirk would be scared of. Golden State is a team on the rise, but they still have a ways to go

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

why would you ever get scared of anyone?

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

i was thinking about this in regards to the clippers. when ppl say the clippers cant go far, i say well, who in the west can overwhelm them?? its no team in the west that u should feel u dont have a chance to win when u step on the court against them. sam goes for ANY west conf team. who in the west do u really feel has such a great edge over u?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

It is going to be a huge disappointment if OKC fails to come out of the West.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Exactly nbk. Also, no one is afraid of the Mavs either Dirrrddkk.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    Cosign nbk and Lakeshow
Why would you be afraid of another team? They play the same game so last I checked anyone can be beaten. Also word to JTaylor if the Thunder don’t win the West I’ll be very surprised.

  • Riggs

    word to lakeshow

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

I’ve seen teams better than Dallas, but definitely not a team to be afraid of. Dirk is right

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

If you’re scared of anything you’re never going to succeed. I have never been “afraid” of someone or some team on a basketball court in my life. I have known I’m not better, but scared? of what, are you going to die if you lose?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

HA! All jokes aside there a places around the world where players have been killed after losses to rival teams *true story*

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

Well if that were the situation, I would understand the fear. Although, I’ve never heard of that happening because of a basketball game. I ahve however heard horror stories about Soccer players in other countries.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

cmon yall stay in contect of what the man is saying. he doesnt mean fear is IN FRIGHTENED RUNNING SCARED. he means fear as in I DONT SEE ANY TEAM OUT THERE THAT IS BETTER THAN US OR THAT HAS SIGNIFICANTLY SURPASSED US IN THE WEST. point blank simple. quit being smart dumb

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

recognizing someone is better then you is not being scared. Quit trying to over think what he is saying.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com K.Holiday

I’ve seen a team they should be afraid of; Dallas! Y’all not looking too good out there Dirk! I know it’s early but just saying!

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

I don’t see why the spurs can’t win it all this season.

  • shawnkemp4prez

I understand people doubting the Celtics’ championship chase, but the Mavs? They are easily one of the premier teams in the west, despite their record right now. As soon as they gel, they will be tough to deal with, even for OKC.

  • biggieman

OKC, LAC, LAL all would thrash Dallas in a seven game series! They replaced their two most important role players from last season (Chandler+Barea), with a washed up VC and herpe face Delonte, pathetic… I would be surprised if they even make it out of the first round

  • robb

The Mavericks were a one hit wonder.

  • moveifuwanna

    Nuggets?

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

Some of you people aren’t watching enough NBA games lol. The Spurs or the Mavs in the Finals this year?! GTFOH.

  • Mariano

@Holy Baller: Maybe you aren’t watching enough NBA games. With Manu and TJ the Spurs are a really good team, all they need right now is an average big man and they’re set. IMO if it wasn’t for injuries the Spurs would be tied for 1st record

  • burnt_chicken

That’s some straight up pre-post-iron curtain, East German, steel-fisted manliness right there. “I don’t fear the West. I will destroy them with my long range bombs.”

  • BuzzerBeater

As we all know records don’t matter in a shortened season, don’t be shocked if your favorites lose in the first round to veteran teams that change gear once the real season starts.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

You don’t have to be scared dirk, but if you don’t respect your opponent you will suffer defeat.

  • fruizm

Clippers, Blazers, Nuggets, Lakers…they can and WILL beat Dallas.

  • shutup

Ive been scared of someone on the basketball court, there was this dude call upstate that used to come to the park, lets just say he wasnt from Buffalo. He couldnt play for sh!t but somehow he ended up on Nike 1 one summer. I seen him fight over a bottle of water, that wasnt his. Other than that I guess Ive just played in some bad neighborhoods in my life, never feared getting beat, actually I always seeked out the competition. And if you havent been scared while playing at some point in your life your lying to yourself, or you’ve never really tested yourself outside of your comfort zone. Maybe you should take your non-scared @$$ take the A train to B-way East NewYork and play a pickup game on the first basketball court you see.

  • shutup

    oh and I dont see NBK complaigning that the writer called the Spurs a rival of the mavericks lmao :}

  • http://www.coachesclipboard.net/FlexOffense.html nbk

What an idiot. Might wanna go back tithe conversation we had yesterday dumbass

Current NBA Rivalries? – Boston v Miami (more of a player rivalry though) – Boston v Chicago is a rivalry – Chicago v Miami is budding – Spurs v Mavericks are a rivalry. That’s about it currently imo. LA doesn’t really have a competitive “rival” at this point. They have only met Dallas in the playoffs (1) time in Kobe’s career, and didn’t win a single game, so I wouldn’t call that a rivalry. THe Lakers haven’t played the SPurs in the playoffs in almot a decade, so that isn’t a rivalry. The Celtics and Lakers are probably the closest thing the Lakers have to a rival, and that’s more a “only a rivalry if you don’t care at all about the players on the teams”

  • shutup

How is Spurs Mavs a rivalry? I dont see there being any bad blood between these two teams, both teams are filled with non-trash talking silently competitive squads, Dirk doesnt bash the spurs and none of the spurs “stars” are the trash talking type. The closest thing to a Spurs rival is Phoenix

  • http://www.coachesclipboard.net/FlexOffense.html nbk

I don’t care how you feel.

  • Mariano

@shutup: Every time the Spurs met the Mavs in the play-offs or in the regular season there was always tension. A lot of cheap shots and punches were thrown, like when Terry punched Finley, when Stackhouse choked Manu, when Najera almost killed Manu lol, and many more… Without even mentioning that every time they met in the post-season they’d always go to 6-7 games

  • Mackenzie

Be afraid of Durant, Dirk. Be very afraid.

  • golakeshow

Shut up dirk you fat loser. Kobe’s gonna have his way with you. Enjoy watching the playoffs on your couch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • shutup

@mariano all the players you mentioned sans Manu and terry dont play there anymore you cant honestly say that when these teams play you feel any added tension a rivalry would have, do you think either the spurs or spurs fans or the mavs and the mavs fans have this game circled on the schedule? Im not saying that these teams arent rivals per say but does it really matter in todays NBA? The spurs are often overlooked and besides the point the only reason I pointed it out is because i was taking a dig at NBK who insists that The clippers and Lakers dont have a rivalry, albeit a lopsided one in the past that has just become competitive, but a rivalry none the less

  • BigBlue

so sick of almost nobody ever mentioning the nuggets. i guess its because they have no contoversial/star players but if more people sat down and watched them play they would automatically realise why they have one of the best records in the L.

  • http://obsessioncollection.wordpress.com grgeblck

C’mon guys. Read between the lines. What Dirk is implying is, the East is a concern for him, not the West. lol.

  • Rap

Dirks right- the Mavs truly have no one to fear…but themselves. Only THEY can mess up a finals berth for themselves, because there’s no other team in the West that can come out on top in a 7 game series with them. Winning a chip, though? Thats another story.

  • Justin G.

Whole lot of overanalyzing going on here and simply over the word “fear”. BigBlue, nobody mentions the Nuggets because they are unproven and like you said, no star players. I think after the last Lakers vs. Clippers game and the games (including preseason) before that, you have to consider it a rivalry now. These are some of the most hotly contested games of the season right now and it’s only going to get worse every time they play. I hope the first thing Gasol does when they all meet at center for the opening tip is rub Paul’s head again. That will make for a great start to the game. lol

  • http://slamonline.com. datkid

the spurs vs mavs is a rivalry…. and dallas is looking VERY beatable lately…. I’m thinking they get a 2nd round exit.

  • Ldub

What attitude or approach should the Finals MVP have? I dont feel that Dirk or the Mavs “fear” or are “afraid” of any team. Do they know every team is gonna battle them every night? Sure they do because they are the champs. I do feel that there are teams that will give them better competition, but like NBK said…dude (nor the team) fears no one. There is nothing that he hasnt seen over the years. Wonder how many people would have commented if the title was “Dirk feels there is competition, but nothing Mavs cant handle”

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Spurs and mavs isn’t really a rivalry, mavs only won in 06. Same with spurs suns, suns only won once. I say the only rivalries are mavs-heat. 06 and 11 titles. Spurs-lakers for west over decade plus. And lakers celtics for a couple finals matchups. That’s it.

  • Mike from Spain

T-Wolves have won against the mavs twice this year…

  • http://www.coachesclipboard.net/FlexOffense.html nbk

And they have JJ Barea and Jason Terry made a mean face! – RIVALRY!!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Dirk gets lucky wins one title, with Jason Terry and JJ Barea and Tyson Chandler help, now he thinks he BIG TIME. I told everyone on this board he is a joke. Taking games off because he is out of shape, if this was any other black star, they would be crushed. The great white hope, gets a pass. BOOK IT!!!

  • SoCalHoopsFan

Problem is, most teams don’t fear them anymore, either…

  • jetstar7

Well, in the context of being intimidated by another team, I believe quite a few players lost sleep going up against the 95-96 Bulls (72-10) back in the day. Not that we really have an equivalent today, maybe Miami, but pressure can get to a player’s head some times. But of course, no one will publicly admit it. The Bad Boys Pistons come to mind too. Now that’s a nightmare.

  • shutup

AS for the Mavs Spurs rivalry, you do realize the Spurs starters didnt play in the fourth or overtime and Dallas just barely eeked out a win. If this is a rivalry I guess someone forgot to tell the Spurs.

  • dsleepy

The Seed: I don’t think anyone ever gets “lucky” to win a title.

  • startown

Wolves beat the Mavs by 10+ each time, and they are not as good as the Thunder
so it will not be a walk in the park for the Mavs this year.
