Dwight Howard Would Listen to Offers from the Boston Celtics

The traveling Dwight Howard circus made its latest pit stop in Boston, with Howard telling the media that should the Celtics contact him this summer (assuming he hasn’t been dealt away by then), he’d be all ears. From the Boston Herald: “And even though we don’t believe this is a team of his dreams, we do know that the Celts will have a great deal of money to throw at a free agent or two in the next offseason. And if Howard is still available — if the Magic don’t blink and move him before the March deadline — C’s president Danny Ainge will undoubtedly put in a call to Team Dwight. The question is whether he’ll answer. ‘Always. Always,’ Howard said. ‘I’d always listen to a team like that. My thing is I want to win. It’s not something like I’m doing this for money. I win. I want to do it my way.’ There may be two problems for the Celtics in that last paragraph. Howard may question whether the club can win with him, Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, a collection of minimum salary veterans and a few children. And his ‘way’ likely means a bigger stage. On the subject of what he’s looking for, Howard hit on some reasonable themes while seemingly throwing a chill at the Magic by comparison. ‘The first thing is basketball,’ he said. ‘I want to win a championship, and it takes a certain type of team to win a championship. You know, there’s a lot of teams who are great during the regular season. They play well, but it’s different once you play in those playoffs, you know? It’s gut-check time. Like I told the Magic, I just want to win. I don’t want a team that doesn’t know how you have to win in the playoffs. I want a team that’s going to go out every night and forget about stats, forget about who scores the most points or who is the fan favorite. Just go out and play, play for each other and play to win. That’s the only thing … ‘You know,’ said Howard, ‘you look at a team like Boston and look at a team like LA who’s won . . . especially Boston. Man, those guys came together and they didn’t care who scored all the points. They had done all the individual stuff. You know, for me, I’ve done a lot of things individually, but I want a championship. All those accolades that I’ve got over the years, they mean a lot, but it’s just different watching teams hold up that trophy and knowing how hard you have to work to get it … They have the championship mentality,’ he said of the Celts. ‘It means a lot. Like I said, I like the team. They play hard and they go after it, and that’s what I like.’”

Just trade the guy he is acting like a indecisive little girl!

  • http://www.coachesclipboard.net/FlexOffense.html nbk

    Then go to Chicago Dwight.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Dwight is that girl in class who teased every boy until they all hated her skanky a$$.

  • Jeremy

This guy is such a bish. Shutup and play dude, the team you have is pretty damn good. It’s not like Orlando hasn’t tried. For the record, imo this guy doesn’t mind a paycut as long as he is in a city with a lot of endorsement opportunities. That’s probably me playing mr obvious though.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Word to M Cho and we all seen that b*tch he just happens to be the biggest one.

  • JML-G

    Howard-Bass(?)-Pierce-Allen(or Eric Gordon)-Rondo

    sounds nice

  • MLK4Life

    Gallons of haterade here

  • Heals

But M in this case as soon as she finally decided on you everyboy in class would be jealous and second guessing why they didn’t seal the deal. Don’t hold your breathe C’s fans, but if D12 hits the FA market Beantown’s chances skyrocket. They’d still be 3rd best on his list, but be able to have RR, PP34, Doc, Pietrus, Bass, plus money and couple mid-first round picks going forward is a pretty damn good group to team with D12 when compared to NJ and Orl rosters without him…

  • Treshiq

    He’s going to L.A.

  • tomtom

So sick of this ‘wishlist’ crap. Kobe is the Only player in the league with a no trade clause is his contract, so Dwight shouldn’t really be telling us what he would like, because frankly it doesn’t matter!

  • Matthew Richardson

D-Rose and D-12 would be like Stock and Malone, Come to the Windy City Dwight!

  • Drunyce

I concur MLK. I never understood why people get so upset with athletes decisions. Whatever he decides to do will NOT affect your life. He can do whatever the F he wants to. It’s not like he’s posting his thoughts on twitter. The only reason we’re hearing about this is the media.

  • ripslam

@tomtom: Dirk Nowitzki also has a no-trade clause.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

co-sign Drunyce, the media are the ones who are asking the repetitive questions and printing his responses . . . All D12 is really saying is that winning is more important than money. Different cities are asking the same questions, he’s responding with the same answers. It’s not like he’s adding teams to his list and shoving any updates down our throats.

i actually feel bad for both the media and their subjects. imagine you have thousands of people judging and criticizing your work EVERY SINGLE DAY, and even questioning you as a human being. that’s gotta be tough to swallow. media personnel don’t have it easy either because their ability to live and feed themselves completely depends on some other people saying something interesting.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

as for the quote itself, how much of it does he actually believe in? sounds like BS to me.

celtics fans… we got two first round draft picks this year in a star studded draft class both around the 12 – 23 area. we could use on an austin rivers and a prospect such as william buford from osu or fab melo from syracuse. then we got half our team coming off their contracts so we can throw money at the big man while still keeping rondo, pierce jeff green bradley and the two rookies. chances are bass will re-sign and if we can get howard, KG and Allen will sign for the vets minimum to win once more. If we miss out on howard, we got space to sign whatever big name come summer time. all we gotta do is play the waiting game…

  • ab40

KG and Ray for the MLE for three or two years however long they want to play Dwight Maxed out for 5 years. And well. I like Howard on the Celtics. He’ll probably still go to Jersey though if they keep Williams. @ Matthew Stockton and Malone didn’t win Jack how are you a chicago fan if you know these guys never won a chip. Vs the bulls for crying out loud.

its a shame that alot of this self-centered nba clown stars have caught lebronitis and are not willing to put in the hard work that michael jordan
had to do to get that monkey off his back with what was given to him..
dwight howard has become the biggest disappointment from a fan perspective
in not showing any respect to the city of orlando, his team and the coaches..
i give props to the rest of orlando players who are having to stomach this
7 foot dwight disease walking among them.

Translation: Listening to offers from anyone. Only hearing 2.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Come on, Orlando, take Stat and Chandler. I love Stat, but lately he seems like he isn’t even interested in taking charge of this team. He’s officially given the reigns to Melo and just wants to find his own squad. Give him Orlando, f*ck it.

  • anynomous

Orlando needs to go ahead and deal dwight and whoever/whatever else to LA for bynum & gasol(?) by the end of the month. Their first priority should be bynum but perhaps LA will throw in pau since he was almost traded to houston before the season began anyway. A straight up trade swapping gasol and dwight is not an equal return with respect to orlando, and bynum has had a history of knee problems his entire career so acquiring him alone is risky. But if orlando can manage to get both of them then this deal has to happen. Then NJ would be out of the running for getting howard and keeping dwill, so trade nelson and whoever/whatever else to get dwill and go on from there.

  • Jerome

@Matthew: D-12 can’t shoot jumpers and Rose can’t pass anywhere near Stockton and Malone calibre.

Dwight is more cancerous to the L than CharlieV.

this is my favourite article on SLAM since the lockout ended!

I’m tired of Howard by now.

As a Celtics fan, I’d be happy to see Dwight teamed up with Rondo, the only better big-little combo in terms of fit would be Dwight/CP3 in my opinion. If we can re-sign Green, use our two draft picks in the mid-first round well and pick up Dwight I think we could seriously challenge in the East and for the chip. I’d want them to take Barton with one of their picks and someone like Quincy Miller if he drops out of the lottery.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Double J

If dwight signs I can see KG re-upping for the minimum, dude just wants to win… I can also see him retiring in BeanTown.

  • Larry Johnson’s Gold Tooth

best news of the season so far…NOW all we need is for OTis to think he has hope this off season and not trade Dwight thinking he will sign him…..then sign KG and Ray to vet min or MLE’s keep Rondo , Bass, Pierce, sign Jeff Green for an MLE (on the cheap cos of his heart)….sign D12….and have room for another big name…..plus two mid level 1st round picks in a deep draft ..and BINGO …back in the hunt…

  • http://espn.com PapaDuck

Why doesn’t he want to go to the bulls. I would trade Noah and Boozer for him or Noah and Deng for him. Or trade all three for him and Anderson. That should be his number one choice since they have a defensive coach (he’s the defensive player of the year) and the bulls have the best point guard in the league and the MVP

  • Eric

Howard is soooo thirsty! This dude is trying his hardest to be the “center” of attention. His divadude act is tired.

  • Waggle

Cosign double J. I hope KG retires here.

  • Shifty

Yeah so hope kg retires a celtic

  • Justin G.

ab40…What does it matter that Stockton and Malone didn’t win a championship? Does that mean they were any less great or PF’s and PG’s shouldn’t try to play like them? It’s not their fault they played in the MJ era when nobody else won either

  • Jerome

All I have to say is … Bravo.

  • jon

hope we can sign kg and allen back next year for a veteran’s minimum and then sign dwight howard for a busload of cash and have 2 amazing talented rookies, as well as a good bench (this season’s bench will do just fine).
