Dwight Howard’s 39 Free Throws Broke Wilt Chamberlain’s Record

The Golden State Warriors’ Hack-a-Dwight resulted in Howard breaking a near 50-year old free throw shooting record last night. Per the Orlando Sentinel: “Dwight Howard has admired Wilt Chamberlain for years. The Orlando Magic superstar watches old film of Chamberlain’s game. Howard reads books about him. Howard even has spoken with some of Wilt the Stilt’s former teammates. On Thursday night, Howard outdid his idol by breaking a record that stood for almost half a century. Howard shattered Chamberlain’s mark for most free throws attempted in an NBA regular-season game. Howard made 21 of his 39 attempts and carried the Magic to a 117-109 win over the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena. ‘I just tried to be aggressive and get to the line,’ Howard said. ‘I didn’t care if I missed 30. I was still going to go up there and just shoot the next one with confidence.’ With the Warriors purposely hacking, clutching and tugging at him, Howard scored 45 points, tying a career high, and collected 23 rebounds.”

    So what was Wilts record?

  • bull22

if dwight actually cared about making free throws and made at least 75 percent of them, he would not be crying about leaving orlando. he should
have had at least 56 points last night, easy.

“I didn’t care if I missed 30″. Man does that say a lot about the man and how he approaches the game

Shaq has some points against Dwight last night on TNT, and was kind of downgrading D12 a litte bit. Saying Andrew Bynum is just as good, clowning Dwight on the whole Superman thing..ect. I remember saying, “That would be funny if Howard caught wind of Shaq’s comments and go off for 50 tonight.”

Justin; yeah….I mean it shows why he’s playing so poorly this year…oh wait, turns out you should STFU.

  • Justin G.

Chris Webber said the same thing about Howard and Bynum the other night against the Suns. While I didn’t hear what Shaq said I’m sure they both meant from an offensive standpoint. Defensively there’s no way

I’m glad that lame strategy didn’t work and the Warriors ended up losing the game.

Justin, you forgot to add this: “I was still going to go up there and just shoot the next one with confidence.” Are you one of the media guys now? Way to take the quote out of context.

    Wilt attempted 34.

Bynum is just as good, you get a few more points and give up 1-2 rebounds, the only difference is Howard stays healthy. and 21-39 is laughable, my quick math puts that about 55%

  • misso

D12 4 MVP!!! Bynum, stop it. He jus got his 1st 20-20 of his career this season & D12 jus got his 3rd last night just in this season not including all the other years

45 and 23 is a hell of a stat line, no-ones game is perfect. You think he isn’t trying daily to improve his FT%? You are a fool if you think otherwise.

Misso makes sense. I think a lot of ppl are taking dwight for granted. He’s very close behind bron for best player. Seriously.

Despite his obvious flaws, Dwight is amazing player. And Shaq is just a salty old man. Just rips on Dwight while ignoring his own, obvious flaws as a player and human being.

  • bike

No excuse for averaging less than 50 percent from FT line. Pathetic. Dwight is a big man, big man get fouled, big men need to be decent FT shooters.
This guy has been surrounded with world class coaches and trainers that could work with him on FT shooting…he simply must not care.
    Beyond pathetic.

  • ripslam

The “I don’t care if I miss 30″ line is a bit pathetic. Dude has few flaws in his game, one of them is free throw shooting. You’d think he’d be a little more motivated, but he’s always been about his “brand” more than basketball.

A few flaws? how about the complete lack of a post game? how about no jumphook? how about terrible footwork? he has too many flaws to every be considered the best in the game. Shaq has every right to criticize him, shaq is one of the best centers ever and Dwight should be doing so much more with his Size and athletic ability and lack of other quality bigs in the league.
