Jason Kidd Wants to Be Deron Williams’ Backup

Deron Williams will be one of the most prized NBA free agents next summer, and Jason Kidd is already recruiting him to the Dallas Mavericks on the low through the media. Per ESPN: “Of course, there’s plenty of buzz swirling around a possible return home next summer for Williams to play for Mark Cuban’s club. Kidd wants to go two more years to play a 20th season at 40 years old. Kidd said he took some lumps playing golf with Williams over the summer, but the sting has eased, said Kidd, who would welcome Williams to Dallas — and hand him the baton that is Kidd’s starting job. ‘It would be great to back him up,’ Kidd said Monday night, ‘wherever he’s at.’ Kidd politely smiled as he answered a question about a possible return to the Nets through free agency to join Williams in Brooklyn, but that would certainly seem to be a long shot. (Now, if Jersey winds up making an increasingly doubtful-looking trade to acquire Dwight Howard, then we’ll revisit the subject. Of course, if the Nets believe they have no shot at Howard and believe Williams will walk, they could look to move him before the March trade deadline.) Kidd certainly knows what it’s like to feel blue in Jersey. Traded last season from Utah after Jerry Sloan abruptly retired, Williams is clearly have a tough time playing on Avery Johnson’s team that is 3-11 and offers little hope on the horizon … Kidd said he’s been thinking about Williams through this difficult opening stretch. ‘I was going to give him a call and just tell him to stay positive and keep teaching while you’re playing,’ Kidd said. ‘He’s got a young team. They’re going to make some adjustments, but they’re definitely looking towards the future in the sense of going into Brooklyn.’”

    Nice to know Kidd is realistic. His best shot at longevity is backing someone up. More vets would still be in the league if they could realize this (AI, etc.)

  • BlackStar

    @ Nella – Word up … I can’t believe that AI might not get a proper send off. He can be a knucklehead at times, but he’s done a lot for the league.

    Deron is going to brooklyn … and so is dwight……… Obviously dwill and dhoward want to play with eachother.. They been talking for years .. havn dinner and etc…….. NY is an bigger market and thats what howard wants…. You may say the nets don’t have the pieces now… But they will get them….. There is too much money and potential in that organization to remain a bad team

  • Riggs

    Net’s need a miracle to get both of them together and to actually have a winning team.

  • AD

    @riggs explain

  • Nehemiah01

    @blackstar What exactly has AI done for the league?

  • Brahsef

    @blackstar

    Every kid under 6 feet tall idolized AI man. Post MJ him and Kobe kept people watchin through some lean talented years

  • Brahsef

    I meant @Nehemiah my bad

  • Heals

    Love the mentality; what makes the team better, what keeps my career longer and how can I spread my knowledge…

  • AD

    @Nehemia where u born in like yesterday

  • o tay

    after this season he will want to be alot of teams backups

  • don the GSW fan

    Nehemia must be younger than 8 years old to say that sentence

    Kidd used to play good defense but he is old now. Deron on dallas would be nice

  • MookieBlaylock

    Shouldnt you be in class Nehemia? ugh…

  • b. angus

    yup, there’s a greater possibility of d-will n dwight playin’ for dallas then the 2 of ‘em playin’ for brooklyn…book it

    I’d just be happy to see Deron as a Maverick.

    Real basketball heads know how much he did for the league. Go look at youtube and type in crossover and see how many hits he has.He had every kid with handles in the gym trying to get his moves down.

    @ AD Dwill is not going to brooklyn. and neither is D12. Yes they want to play together, but if you think just them playing together makes them a contender youre wrong. Howard would be a definite upgrade from lopez, but what about the middle pieces from 2-4 and what about the bench? it takes an entire team to make it. Only thing that DH and Dwill would do is fill seats.

    i think dwill would strongly consider coming to dallas. he is a texas native right? and why would cuban give up so many pieces w/o a backup plan? dallas or la? its between those to teams. KOBE or DIRK? Id chose LA personally but hey, to each its own

    I think the word League is what’s causing the discrepancy, cause there’s no denying AI’s influence (positive, negative, whatever) on young kids/basketball players. Hell he even had TyLue rocking cornrows (uggghhhh with those fatties he had) like him trying to simulate AI in practice (yeah I’m talking about practice. If only that series had ended after gm1. Him stepping over Ty, right in front of the LAL bench is my favorite AI moment (even over MJ cross, a putback dunk v Tor)…

    AI will get his shot at redemption. Just be patient and the right situation shall show up! But as for his influence… Mannn , back in high school everyone , I mean EVERYONE who watched/played bball had an iverson jersey , even my ex – girl had one lol, and that Tmac jersey when he was in Orlando #Classic

  • anynomous

    @12ising I cosign that

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

    what he did in the league is undeniable….but he is done, get over it people

  • anynomous

    Only one person knows if Allen Iverson is done. That person is Allen Iverson and he says he`s not therefore he can still play. People can say whatever they want but HIS word is final and factual. It`s simply incomprehensible that players like kidd, fisher, etc who are virtually ineffective at both ends of the court are playing in the nba while Iverson is waiting for an opportunity. ridiculous.

  • Devonte

    Thats great because KIDD can`t play all those minutes no more. D.Williams & D.Howard should be in Dallas next season. Mark should sign JET,Delonte,Mahinmi, & Odom back to Dallas for 3 years because they can play on both ends of the floor.

  • anynomous

    It`s time for AI to return. He just needs to be in the right situation. The nba is PREDICTABLE and BORING. I want to be entertained and excited about the game again.

    DWill and Iverson would be a great backcourt duo. Their games complement each other to a T. I would love to see them in Orlando with Howard or Bynum if the lakers and orlando swap centers.

    I am a huge AI fan, he held down the league when Jordan left and before Kobe was the man. the thing that bothers me is the year he went to detroit everyone was saying he lost it because his numbers where down, but if you look at his FGA’s on the detriot season vs the previous year at Denver…he took half the amount so of course he is not gonna average as many points. He should have just kept his mouth shut in Memphis and took the starting job from Conley. i know he had a lot going on but shoot, Kobe playin his best ball with a bad wrist and a divorce. having said all this, i hate to say it but AI’s Nba career is over, i hope im wrong but i doubt it
