Kendrick Perkins on Blake Griffin Poster Dunk: ‘It Happens’

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

From now until the day he retires, and quite possibly well beyond that, Kendrick Perkins will be known as the guy that Blake Griffin annihilated with a monster dunk.

It doesn’t matter what else he does with the rest of his career, the mark Griffin put on him last night is irremovable.

The Dwyane Wade posterization, the infamous scowl, his Boston Celtics days … all of it sort of fades into the background for now. Kendrick Perkins is the guy that got got by Blake Griffin.

To his credit, the OKC Thunder center said that last night’s monster dunk is just one of those things that happen from time to time, and accepted that shot-blockers must learn to live with these occasional humiliations.

From Hoopsworld:

“Well, it happens,” said Perkins. “At the end of the day if you’re a shot blocker, you’re going to get dunked on. It was a great play that he made. Obviously I wish I wasn’t in it, but it was a great play that he made. Definitely.”

There was some debate among journalists while waiting for the Thunder locker room to open. Did Griffin initiate contact with his off hand? Should it have been an offensive foul? “It was a clean dunk,” said Perkins. Kendrick didn’t get a great look at the play as it unfolded. “I didn’t know what happened,” said Perkins. “I just knew I was trying to get to the rotation. Our defensive coverage had broke down and that’s what it was.”

Poor guy.

Oh, by the way, the Los Angeles Clippers beat the OKC Thunder last night.

The version with D’angelo’s “How does it feel” as the soundtrack is the funniest thing on earth to me right now.

  • POW Posted: Jan.31 at 9:22 am
The Thunder are protesting the game under article 45875547 of the Geneva Convention for torture and human right violations.

  • spit hot fiyah Posted: Jan.31 at 9:38 am
perk took it like a champ though, no complaining about an offensive foul

  • GP23 Posted: Jan.31 at 9:39 am
Unfortunately, Perkins will now always be remembered for being posterized by Blake for eternity. Unlucky my man…

  • rlz Posted: Jan.31 at 9:45 am
He’s right, though… just ask Dikembe.

  • Justin G. Posted: Jan.31 at 9:49 am
I’m not sure why people think this is an offensive foul. Perk is inside the circle and he’s moving into Blake at the same time. Even if he were outside the circle his feet aren’t set and he’s leaning over. It’s a foul no matter what way you look at it

  • LakerNation Posted: Jan.31 at 10:03 am
Kendrick Perkins should be proud he just made NBA history books, or at least made it to the museum as the guy on the picture that got dunked on by BLAKEG

  • illogicaljedi Posted: Jan.31 at 10:26 am
Perk & Mozgoff should seek counseling from the Weiss institute of humilitation.

  • bike Posted: Jan.31 at 10:28 am
Perkins will have plenty of company when it’s all said and done. Lots of guys are gonna get slammed on by Blake–not much anyone can do outside of tackling the guy midair.

  • Hursty Posted: Jan.31 at 10:39 am
People talking about how it wasn’t a dunk.. come on. Replays clearly show at least 3 of his fingers hooking around the rim. A dunk doesn’t have to shake the backboard or make that ‘snap’ sound when you pull down on the ring.
    It’s a dunk.
Dwight Howard’s Superman attempt – not a dunk. The Mozgov thing.. well.. I don’t think he dunked that either.

  • Fat Lever Posted: Jan.31 at 10:39 am
Unless I missed something, Perk is already in the history books as an NBA champion. Nice dunk and Perk is cool enough to give Blake his props.

  • TC Posted: Jan.31 at 10:45 am
That’s the only way to take it. You gotta be like Pedro and say “sometimes you gotta call a guy Daddy.” He’ll be fine.

  • RobbieJay Posted: Jan.31 at 10:46 am
well at least perk has a ring

  • DFrance21 Posted: Jan.31 at 10:57 am
Nice AD, I forgot all about that Wade dunk. Still think Blakes tops it tho.

  • T-Ray Posted: Jan.31 at 11:16 am
This was sick! Still think DWades was better considering he did a sick spin move then rose up and yammed it.

  • fitzy Posted: Jan.31 at 11:18 am
whatever at least he made an attempt to challenge it, i’d rather have that then him not even rotate over like most players would do. Props to him for being a good sport about it too, besides its not like he’s the only guy that blake griffin’s clowned on

  • Gustaf Posted: Jan.31 at 11:18 am
“I’m not sure why people think this is an offensive foul. Perk is inside the circle and he’s moving into Blake at the same time. Even if he were outside the circle his feet aren’t set and he’s leaning over. It’s a foul no matter what way you look at it ” Restricted area applies to secondary defenders relative to the ball carrier and even if Perkins was a secondary defender, the rules state that the restricted area doesn’t apply if the ball carrier uses his arm to prevent a block shot which Griffin kind of does.

  • robb Posted: Jan.31 at 11:29 am
Blake is a real life Space Jam Alien Monster.

  • Ldub Posted: Jan.31 at 11:44 am
    filthy mcnasty!

  • Allenp Posted: Jan.31 at 11:44 am
It’s funny how none of his teammates wanted to meet Perkins’ eyes after the dunk.
Like he just told them he got fondled in the club as an adult.

  • Max Posted: Jan.31 at 11:47 am
Imagine Shawn Bradley playing against the Clippers!

  • Jose Posted: Jan.31 at 12:02 pm
Mozgov is the happiest man in the world right now. . .

  • The Philosopher Posted: Jan.31 at 12:05 pm
Not bad. Not bad at all.
Shout out to Perkins for being a man about it.

  • DFrance21 Posted: Jan.31 at 12:11 pm
Wait, did Perk just call himself a shot blocker? lol.

  • AQWORD Posted: Jan.31 at 12:12 pm
Perk is not a shot blocker, he does not go for blocks . He goes for hard fouls. THAT’S WHY HE DESERVED IT MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE. I liked Perkins but this season he hit some peeps 2 hard, so he has two rings , unfortunately the other one has loosened up badly after this encounter.

  • capostat Posted: Jan.31 at 12:46 pm
People forget that (unless someone else proves me wrong) it was Keon Clark that was the 1st to execute the dunk that looks like you’re whipping the ball in the basket. Dallas Mavs? Shawn Bradley? Raptor bench goes wild? I’ll always remember that one

  • Money$hot Posted: Jan.31 at 12:48 pm
^^^He only has one ring^^ Perkins defiantly is not a shot blocker, and I actually think when Wade got em in 2011 it was worse http://youtu.be/Dw6uuoa9tZM

  • Heals Posted: Jan.31 at 12:56 pm
At least your name is still a noun Perk, Mosgov is and forever will be a verb associated with BGriff throwdowns…

  • Anon Posted: Jan.31 at 1:07 pm
    @AQWORD Perk has one ring

  • vtrobot Posted: Jan.31 at 1:10 pm
Unreal display of power. DJ’s reaction shows how special that was. Glad that I stayed up late to watch it live. Props to Perk. We miss the hell out of you in Boston.

  • vtrobot Posted: Jan.31 at 1:11 pm
Can you imagine if they had called an offensive foul after that? Ha ha. Staples would have burned to the ground.

  • Chief Posted: Jan.31 at 1:20 pm
Insanity, but I like the fact wade finishes hard so there is no debate, however I still want the poster.

  • Red Posted: Jan.31 at 1:20 pm
That was vicious but after a while it won’t be viewed as that impressive cause he threw it in, if it was a dunk then I’d be amazed and in awe.

  • underdog Posted: Jan.31 at 1:28 pm
It was a great dunk, and maybe I’m just getting old and grumpy, but I still can’t find Griffin’s dunks on the level of young VC’s.

  • AQWORD Posted: Jan.31 at 1:29 pm
Moneyshot & anon are too slow , like Kendrick then BAAAAM !!!! it’s ova :-)

  • spit hot fiyah Posted: Jan.31 at 1:52 pm
    ^lol

  • DFrance21 Posted: Jan.31 at 1:56 pm
So what constitues a dunk to yall? I call that a dunk. He got at least 2.5 fingers on the rim. Does he need all 4? Does the rim have to break away? Someone explain.

  • LakeShow Posted: Jan.31 at 2:01 pm
Honestly for me, a dunk is anytime you go up and throw the ball down into the rim. Hand doesn’t even need to touch rim as long as it’s above the rim. I consider Dwight’s superman dunk to be a dunk.

  • Red Posted: Jan.31 at 2:07 pm
Me personally, I don’t see it as a dunk more like throwing it into the cylinder.

  • DFrance21 Posted: Jan.31 at 2:31 pm
Lake I agree with you up until the Dwight part, to me he was parallel to the rim and kind threw the ball forward. His had wasn’t really close to touching it. I din’t see it as him soaring above the rim. But i’m splitting hairs, at the end of the day, I can’t do any of the stuff these guys do.

  • bike Posted: Jan.31 at 2:49 pm
Maybe it’s the beginning of something new–a throw down versus a dunk. A throw down is where the ball is literally thrown through the hoop with very little/none of the had coming into contact with the rim versus a dunk where the wrist or most of hand comes into contact. A throw down, in theory, has a higher degree of difficulty since a player’s hand with the ball has to be well above the rim.
Either way, it’s still two points at the end of the day.

  • DieselMechanic Posted: Jan.31 at 3:21 pm
What an idiotic thing to say that this nba champion will only be remembered for this one play. We all love dunk ons but gimme a break with that one.

  • Alf Posted: Jan.31 at 4:02 pm
I’d say this is further proof Blake is on parallel to being the next Shawn Kemp. Remember Alton Lister? (or whatever the exact name is).
That guy got GOT by Kemp and was forever known by then. Seems Kendrik is the Alton…

  • nbk Posted: Jan.31 at 4:36 pm
If this isn’t a dunk. Then it’s something better. If any of you can not dunk like this I ask you to please put it on youtube.

  • unf*ckwitable Posted: Jan.31 at 6:03 pm
like someone said after the mozgov dunk last year. Something like “you wish you could lay up like that”.

  • Andy Whitby Posted: Jan.31 at 6:24 pm
NBK comment ends this thread…it’s like…something better than a dunk haha

  • The Philosopher Posted: Jan.31 at 7:50 pm
Andy just ended the thread @6:24p.m…

  • house Posted: Jan.31 at 8:00 pm
And AQWORD’s sarcasm completely went over some people’s heads I see….This dunk kinda reminds me of the stuff some of those cats do in slamball or w/e it’s called.

  • kantankruz Posted: Jan.31 at 11:12 pm
    Perk also has a ring.

  • AQWORD Posted: Feb.1 at 2:53 am
^^ nope , he has 2 stupid ^^ look up . In fact dont look up just look down & walk away, like Big Perk.

  • Justin G. Posted: Feb.1 at 3:44 am
So what he has a ring has to be the dumbest response to getting dunked on like that

  • BBaller Posted: Feb.1 at 5:17 am
I know it doesn’t matter, but is BG half white and half black? Silly, dumbass, ignorant question by me but i’m curious. Is that why the KKK owner endorses him? Love BG if he was purple.

  • DFrance21 Posted: Feb.1 at 12:52 pm
@BBaller if you don’t make a big deal out of the question than neither will we(most of us anyway). But yeah, his pops is black and his moms is white. And I don’t even wanna know what this KKK stuff you referenced is all about.

  • BBaller Posted: Feb.2 at 5:46 am
The KKK reference is towards Sterling, owner of the Clippers. A horrible Human DFrance21
