Kevin Love Signs 4-Year, $62 Million Extension With Timberwolves

Kevin Love confirmed last night’s report from the Pioneer Press that he’ll be in Minnesota for four more years. The only caveat is that, according to multiple reports, he can can opt out after three years to become a free agent. (Oh, and Kevin’s mad at the front-office for not giving him that 5th year on his new deal.) From Love’s Twitter page: “To [Timberwolves] fans: I’ll be in Minnesota for 4 more years! Excited to see you when I get back to Minneapolis.”

Good deal, does anyone know how long Rubio is signed?

2 year rookie deal with team option.

Minnesota set themselves up to lose Love in 3 years. Shoulda given him the max

Couldn’t have said it better, nbk.

For the management standpoint, it’s hard to give players Max contracts right now because it becomes a thread in the NBA that after getting max contracts, the player basically gets injured or plays like sheyt.

for the record, this is the Max he can earn in a 4 year deal. But this isn’t a max deal because he could have received an additional year.

Seems like he should have got the max. He’s the best player to come to Minn. since Garnett and to get someone that good who likes playing in that team/city/market is pretty rare.

Bike, yup. Don’t know what Minny was thinking on this.

Well guys is anyone really worth $62 million, is Chubby Fielder worth $200 million for the Tigers??

It’s always tough to dispute contracts, being just a fan. However, you have to realize that without K-Love, Minny would essentially be the Toronto Raptors, which is a star-less team that deserves no air time. Love is not the best PF in the league (sorry fans), but he does have a unique style that seems to connect with fans, earning his franchise far more money than if he weren’t there. Plus, it probably doesn’t hurt that he’s white, and America is foaming at the mouth for a legit white superstar. Make your money Kevin, I’m not mad at ya.

I think Kevin is doing that deal because of two points:
    - not many teams could give and would give him max deal when he would be free agent
    - I think he likes Ricky Rubio and sees a future coming

I am a Kevin Love fan and since Rubio and Derrik Williams is with Minnesota, I watch each game of the Wolves. If you ask me… I think these 3 have the right chemistry and they all have a very good work ethic.

BIG things are coming for the Wolves… Let Williams find his way and let all Timberwolves adjust to Rickys game then everything is set up:)

3 years and Kobe will probably be wrapping up his Lakers career…K-Love signs with them to fill the void…just sayin it’s possible.

^Really? You think Kobe is retiring in 3 years? He’s going for 20 years in the L. Unless his hands and legs fall off…. So ya, maybe 3 years..

They’re probably saving that “designated player” tag for Ricky Rubio. They really need to add a shooting guard like Ellis, Martin, or Iguodala to go with Rubio and Love.

I don’t know about setting themselves up to lose him in 3 years. If the team is doing well by then, why would he leave? If he was that mad he could have just not signed. He was going to get paid by somebody either way. Plus, when this contract is up he’s only going to be 27 years old. He’ll just be entering his prime and assuming he’s playing at the same level or better he’ll get a raise then too. $15.5M is nothing to scoff at and by taking a bit of a cut by not insisting on the max he allows the Wolves’ front office to have some money to add some pieces.

    WHY

finally some contracts making sense. At least the 2008 draftees are not getting max like Gay and Iguodala which lock up other players. Good move by both Wolves and Love and I wish them a champ. Sign a Centre, get a pure shooting guard that can defend.

ESPN is hating this deal but I like it. With ESPN, you can’t win. If Love got the max, ESPN’s angle would be that Minny’s front office overpaid for a second tier guy. Go figure. I like this contract because Love can opt out if the Pups keep going downhill. At the same time, it provide flexibility but puts the pressure on Minny’s front office to surround Love and Rubio with right pieces. Lots of centers will be available in the upcoming free agent class.

ESPN thinks its a bad deal for Minnesota. Because of the exact reason you like the contract. — And you can’t honestly think that Minnesota is a free-agent destination. No good player is signing there.

The point of the lockout was supposed to be to allow small market teams to lock up their best players for long periods for money that no one else could offer.
If that doesn’t happen, we don’t need a lockout. This wasn’t a role player, this was a budding superstar.

They must really love Ricky Rubio to spare the 5 years when the time to sign KL came…or perhaps they are waiting for another star, a bigger star(??)
