Kings Co-Owner on DeMarcus Cousins: ‘We’re Not Trading Him’

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

On New Year’s Eve, the Sacramento Kings lost handily to the New York Knicks at home (their third straight defeat), and after the game players openly blamed head coach Paul Westphal for the team’s ineptitude on the offensive end of the floor.

Things then blew up completely when Westphal suspended second-year forward DeMarcus Cousins, while taking the highly unusual (and bizarre) step of publicly announcing that Cousins had demanded a trade.

According to Kings co-owner Joe Maloof and GM Geoff Petrie, the team has no actual intention to trade the wildly talented (and troubled) 21-year old forward.

Per the Sac Bee:

Many of his complaints after Saturday’s loss were right on point. Notwithstanding Sunday’s win over the rebuilding Hornets, the Kings effort had been lacking, the ball and body movement nonexistent, and a sense of cohesiveness nowhere to be found. For most of these opening days, the Kings have been solo artists, dribbling their way to three painful losses.

Seriously? Cousins wants to be traded? The Kings would be nuts to entertain a single phone call, which apparently are not. “We leave that stuff (the benching) to the basketball people,” Kings co-owner Joe Maloof said before tipoff, “but we’re not trading him.” They might have considered picking up the phone, though, and placing a pre-emptive courtesy call to Cousins’ agent, John Greig. That would have been prudent and mature and pre-emptive, and a clear indication that, amid the stormy season’s start, cooler heads indeed will prevail.

DeMarcus Cousins and his agent both alluded to the fact that no real trade demand has been made despite Paul Westphal’s claims.

Were I a betting man, I’d wager that when the dust eventually settles, Cousins will outlast his coach in Sacramento.

Mutoni is right, Cuz will prob outlast Westphal in SacTown and it wud b dumb 2 trade him

The Kings should use “foot in mouth syndrome” as the reason for Demarcus Cousins missing the Hornets game. He’s going to feel like an idiot for a few months, especially when he’s sitting all alone on the airplanes, in the team bus, in the locker room, at team dinners and team events. Enjoy being an outcast you overhyped, overweight, entitled little twit.

PW is on the hotseat anyway. The Maloofs are too broke to pay 2 coaches so they won’t fire him and wait out till the offseason instead. I like Jeff Van Gundy as the next Kings coach. Considering they’ll likely have another lottery pick, they should have enough talent to get a good coach.

  • ripslam

Seems like every single person in the Kings organization has a different plan for Cousins, lol.

  • Bx Baller

He is not a franchise/max talent guy anyway, trade him now and get another pick and some solid assets to possibly leverage into multiple first round picks in this upcoming talent heavy draft. Thompson is solid, Hayes is solid, let Whiteside play

  • skurkie

I thought I red something earlier: DeMarcus Cousins looking to play ‘Smarter’ this season

  • http://nba.com/bulls The Babe

@Jake: Woah you clearly haven’t seen him if you’re saying he’s overweight, a bit unfit at the moment but not overweight.
@BxBaller: What 2nd year player that isn’t named Blake Griffin would warrant a max contract anyway(if not ever)?

  • Shecky Shabazz

I remember during the 2010 Draft I said to a friend that my hometown team, the Sixers should take Evan Turner, but this guy might make them regret it. I’m glad the Sixers didn’t grab him with the number 2 pick. With that said, Speights and a 2nd round pick for Cousins.

  • Isaac

Cousins is the most talented player on that Kings team by far.. And after all his work in the paint he watches Marcus Thornton and Evans dribble the air out of the ball before jacking up a shot. They should trade him, because their guards are making him useless.

  • ripslam

@The Babe: John Wall. Probably not right now, but later.

As long as this dude stays away from my Celtics, I’m good.

  • gakbrenti

when the player has no longer have heart to play!

  • Bx Baller

@ the babe, 2010 the worst draft of the last 10 years by far. That usually leads to guys getting overpaid

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

All Westphal had to say yesterday was “No comment.” Seriously a lot of NBA coaches and GMs can learn a lot from the Patriots Bill Belichick camp….

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

@Bx Baller – Word? 2010 worst draft of the last 10 years?
First of all, we just had a MUCH worse draft in 2011.
Secondly, go back and look at the 2002 and 2006 drafts, which were worse as well.
And while not in last 10 years anymore, the 2000 and 2001 drafts were pretty bad too.
The 2010 draft is not the weakest of the last ten years, trust.
John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins are already pretty good and Derrick Favors, Al Farouq Aminu and others will get there.

  • http://www.adultism.com justlenny

    @jake – my thoughts exactly

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Trade him to Houston!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Yeah 2010 was actually a solid draft. Definitely not the worse of the last ten years, lol. Since ’08, people have tended to underrate each consecutive draft more and more–I’m not sure why that is… But ’08 was the exception, not the rule. We had a great draft in ’09, and 2011 will prove a lot of doubters wrong.

Players are just getting more and more spoiled.. If I were a young, talented NBA player, I would be excited to play with Tyreke on this young team..

  • http://www.twitter.com/mavus15 Mavus15

How about this: Play inside-out rather than coming down shooting jump shot after jump shot.. Any of you would be pissed if you know you can help your team on offense but yet they only want you to get rebounds and solid D.. you can get a bunch of big men to do that.. but it’s hard to get a scorer down low in these league but you have to go to him..

  • RunNGun

The Kings should hire Kurt Rambis. LOL

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Cousins is a talented player no doubt, but he has this sense of entitlement thing about him that’s gonna hurt his career if he doesn’t get it together.

  • matt

I heard NJN is interested in him. Maybe Humphries for Garcia and Cousins, SAK saves $, get rid of a headcase, get a decent player in Humphries. NJN gets a tremendous talent. OR Lopez for Cousins straight up. 2 pretty young bigs with potential get swapped.

  • http://www.thesmashbrothas.com zen garden

id trade him dude always got a sour ass look on his face even when he isnt in the game

  • dma

This Sacramento team would have been fun to have a camera crew follow around – Cousins, Evans, Thorton, and Jimmer would have made some great TV.

  • http://dsjfklfl.com Jukai

    Honestly, I’d say trade him.

  • ClydeSays

If the Kings are smart, they feature Demarcus over the next month or so, wait until the trade deadline & get value for him. No need to panic trade right now. It’s not like the Kings are going to hurt their non-playoff season…

  • http://Halftimeonline.NET jbutters

I need this guy back on the court ASAP getting double doubles for my fantasy squad. Whata a lil trade demand when you’re losing. Let’s go cousins! Just up that FG%

  • Allenp

Cousins will blow up on his next team. Westphal is a weak coach.

  • http://dsjfklfl.com Jukai

Allen: He may very well blow up. But he wont do it on the Kings. There isn’t a strong coach who isn’t already coaching a team who can keep Cousins in his place… and the Kings are just struggling too much for Cousins to ever be fully happy.
Trade him and get some value out of him. He isn’t the future of this franchise.

  • Bx Baller

@enigmatic – don’t care how young Favors is, he just isn’t a beast. Amino will be decent at best. That draft was trash, one all-star – Wall

  • Hanson

Whats up with the illuminati pic?

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Cousins said he didn’t ask to be traded, Maloofs say they aren’t trading him – the weak link here is Westphal, who has failed so often I don’t even know how he has a job. Bet he’s out before next season starts.

  • Dingo Rob

Cosign de France, I love the NBA but guys like this really turn me off and is embarrassing as a fan of the sport. Anyhow I’m not expecting much except underachievement from this guy wherever he plays so I shouldn’t be too concerned.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

He won’t produce if he’s so unhappy. Trade him and get some value for him, cut your losses.
